~~We added English and Spanish subtitles in the closed captions for those who want to sing along.~~
We do not own anything related to J.R.R. Tolkien's, "The Hobbit" or Peter Jackson's films, apart from this particular arrangement and recording.
This is a cover of J.R.R. Tolkien's "Far Over the Misty Mountains Cold." Melody written by David Donaldson, David Long, Steve Roche and Janet Roddick found in Howard Shore's movie soundtrack.
We hope you really enjoy this. It took a while to edit. Just trying to make something entertaining.
My brother arranged this piece and we thought it would be neat to sing more of the verses of J.R.R. Tolkien's "Misty Mountains" poem than they did in the movie.
It is an amazing story!
Three of my brothers and my dad sang. I recorded and mixed it. There are a total of 10 singing tracks.

Lyrics:
Far over the misty mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away ere break of day
To seek the pale enchanted gold.
The dwarves of yore made mighty spells,
While hammers fell like ringing bells
In places deep, where dark things sleep,
In hollow halls beneath the fells.
For ancient king and elvish lord
There many a gleaming golden hoard
They shaped and wrought, and light they caught
To hide in gems on hilt of sword.
On silver necklaces they strung
The flowering stars, on crowns they hung
The dragon-fire, in twisted wire
They meshed the light of moon and sun.
Far over the misty mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away, ere break of day,
To claim our long-forgotten gold.
Goblets they carved there for themselves
And harps of gold; where no man delves
There lay they long, and many a song
Was sung unheard by men or elves.
The pines were roaring on the height,
The winds were moaning in the night.
The fire was red, it flaming spread;
The trees like torches blazed with light.
The bells were ringing in the dale
And men looked up with faces pale;
The dragon's ire more fierce than fire
Laid low their towers and houses frail.
The mountain smoked beneath the moon;
The dwarves they heard the tramp of doom.
They fled their hall to dying fall
Beneath his feet, beneath the moon.
Far over the misty mountains grim
To dungeons deep and caverns dim
We must away, ere break of day,
To win our harps and gold from him!
Far over the misty mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old...

I definitely searched for this lol I need it
Searched for silver. Found gold.
Farewell... master burglar. Go back to your books... and your armchair. Plant your trees, watch them grow. If more people... valued home... above gold... this world would be a merrier place.
That quote was so good. Because it really holds much truth. The world would be great, if the people would value simpler things over gold and riches. Greed is maybe the most destructive vice of all.

@Space Vatnik what’s wrong with you?
There's something mystifying about a group of man's humming, it goes deep, deeper then dungeons of mordor, it hits your heart.
Skyrim's main theme also used this. Always epic.
Rawhide is also similar to this
There's no humming in this though, which is sad.
Does it wake something inside you? Something Tookish? To go and see great mountains, and hear the pine-trees and the waterfalls, and explore the caves, and wear a sword instead of a walking-stick? Just once?

A message to the future generations. Don't let this song die.
Tolkien will never die...
Legends never die!!
84 years so far, and still going strong.
There are no future generations dude. We’re going extinct in a hundred years
We must keep the traditions alive... the world will suffer if we do not... every action has a reaction... I have confidence that the reaction to this will be positive
Why can't i stop listening to this, its so good...
This song is soooooo much better than the one that's in the movie!! In the movie we have a really epic song that make me feel so good every time I listen to it but it's sooo short! These are the real lyrics, and in 3 movies for one book they couldn't even fit the REAL lyrics?!? I'm so angry about this!
I'm in the same darn boat. I canNOT stop listening to this. Gotta be a spell or two or a thousand that keeps calling to my ears.
Tolkien was a creative genius the likes of which we have nothing to compare these days; that is what you are experiencing.
Heyman Whatisup Tolkien is by far the best author ever to have lived...

I feel sorry for the dwarves. They had a civilization without equal, easily rivaling if not dwarfing the elven kingdoms, and they lost so much of it, because of monsters they could not possibly know would come. Smaug, Balrog... poor guys...
Rather interesting. The Dwarves were rather like the Jews, seeking to return, in the case of the Dwarves to Erebor, in the case of Jews, to Jerusalem.
DonMeaker dont forget germany
Truth be told, Moria and Erebor (The Lonely Mountain) were held by only 1 group of Dwarves, known as The Longbeards or Durin's Folk (named so because of a series of kings they had). There are actually 6 more Dwarven clans spread throughout Middle Earth. Tolkien just never expanded on them for whatever reason.
bram koster Germany was represented by the Goblins in the Hobbit. Tolkien was very impressed by the German trenches that he and his men got to occupy, very roomy, dry and protective. Of course the firing ports pointed the wrong way.
DonMeaker
This would be based on the fallacy that the LotR is a reference to WWII, and the European conflict. While it is true that the book was written under the shadow of war, and that undoubtedly affected Tolkein's mood, I myself have held and read an official copy of LotR with a forward by the man himself saying that he was aware of this rumor, and DENYING IT. He said that the war had literally nothing to do with the story, that he had conceived the storyline prior to the war, and he refuted all suggestions that he was writing wartime propaganda. The goblins are NOT Germany, the Hobbits are NOT England, Sauron is NOT Hitler.
Its hard to believe that Tolkien originally wrote the Hobbit for his kids as a bed time story
ikr
I wonder what it feels for his kids when the story got adapted as a movie, it would be amazing

Baruk Khazad indeed, mellonamin. Baruk Khazad indeed.
what does that mean?
Something I've always found interesting about this song; it never directly speaks about Smaug. It skirts around him, talking about the effect he has on the world and the halls, but shies away from speaking his name or describing him. It's like the song itself is frightened of the dragon.
That's... an absolutely astounding interpretation. I love it!
Tolkien's subtleties were unmatched, and remain so to this day. Imagine that he wrote this book for his children.
Not surprising when that's a major spoiler at that point in the movie. But yeah I always loved that fact.
The "evil-doer" gets a rise out of hearing his name in the news. Its an additional motivation for his despicable acts. By refusing to credit him with the acts, we take away his recognition, thus minimizing his self worth.
The same thing is rightly done to mass shooters, murderers, terrorists in present day news

undertakernumberone1 and goblins!
well Tolkien replaced the word Goblin with Orcs in the LotR if my memories are correct... so both Orc and Goblin are more or less the same
undertakernumberone1 Not exactly. Goblins are from the orc-kind, but at the same time, goblins are small, a minor size than orcs. Biggest orcs were called that, orcs, also the most fierce orcs were called Uruks.
The Dwarfs, like the Elves, are fading from Middle Earth. An analogy of how mystisicm, frontiers and the "unknown" magical places are fading from the earth.
The Elves, take their fate with grace and choose to migrate to the old lands (where none other may go but gods and elves). That or die and fade in Middle Earth.
The Dwarfs, however, are a much prouder species. They take their fate in a much more melancholy but heroic way. They continue like old, they always seek to regain their lost glory and power, even if they know they never can. They always look for caverns old, lost gold and glory, lost homes and lost legacies.
The great tragedy here is that they know it's futile, but why do they do it? Easy. Why not? It's who they are, they are dwarfs. As they sing this old song in the movie, this is shown, because even though it reminds them of a lost capitol and a lost eon of dwarf supremacy: They all stand up. They're stout, but melancholy at the song. They all show their honour and pride of who they were, who they are. Dwarfs.
It's a weird thing really, their dungeons and caverns will in due time be their mausoleum as they fade. As the last dwarfs die out in their magnificent halls and prodigious caverns. They're in fact seeking back not to lost glory, but to rest, to be forgotten with their gold, to remember and be remembered for their glory days.
I guess that's just how badass dwarfs are. As long as the last one draws breath, there'll be a proud, stout, angry, alcoholic, pipe-smoking, goblin-slaughtering dwarf. Humming this song in memory of old, regretting nothing but still strangely sad and proud at his legacy left.
All things fade. Dwarfs just do it much better than any other ever could.
Great work on the song.

You are right Tolkien was a great guy and a great author one of the best that the world ever once knew
Carlos ZR Peter jackson is trying to get the rights to make the Silmarillion movie
Carlos ZR hes dead
Kingkalidire he didnt need them for LOTR because tolkien is dead, so unless hes come back to life, i dont know why theyd need them
JRR Tolkien was a genius author. Not only did he come up with the world of Middle-earth and its races, he came up with the languages that they spoke. Fully realized and written languages. Elfish, Dwarfish, Black Speech, Rohirric, and several others. That, and he came up with incredible lore for his world. Lord of the Rings is the gold standard of Fantasy genre books.
Yeah as a hobby writer working on a medieval fiction, his work is almost impossible to comprehend. Not the work itself, but how he did it, where he got the inspiration. He's the Mozart of literature, and that's perhaps downplaying him. Even crazier when you consider he felt he hadn't done 20% of what he wanted to do. He was of a mind to re-do everything he'd already done, and had at least two more stories in mind.
What an absolute legend!
Hi Just Me.
If I remember correctly J R R was an expert on the Anglo Saxon history and language. Apparently his inspiration for the Rohirrim was his sense of loss at the fall of the Anglo Saxons after Hastings. He always maintained that if the Anglo Saxons had embraced cavalry as the Celts had before them instead of being a purely infantry based society they would have beaten the Normans and their culture would have survived. The Rohirrim are the Anglo Saxons as J R R would have loved them to be.
@@plymouth5714 Epic, didn't know. Thanks for the info!
When you say elfish you mean sindarin and quenya
Actually, he developed the languages first, then created the world in which those languages would be spoken. The stories rose out of that.
I love how in the book they explain all their story in this amazing song and Bilbo is like "wait, what's the mission??" and Thorin is like: "Didn't you listen to our song? =T"
Does anyone else think this song makes a great lullaby? When I have kids, I'm DEFINITELY going to sing this to put them to sleep. Then, they'll dream of slaying dragons and reclaiming their mountain home!

after rings of power I think we collectively owe the hobbit an apology.
You are very right
Like the sequels of Star Wars made the prequels seem like masterpieces, rings of power has made the hobbit seem like return of the king
@@Rko11148 real
@@Rko11148 exactly like that.
This is beautiful. It's exactly like how Tolkien would have imagined it I think: Dwarves were not just the surly, grim race often portrayed in other works. They were also brave, proud, honorable and deeply loved beautiful things. Masterful craftsmen, masons and smiths, they could produce wondrous works of art from stone.
Although fearsome warriors, the Dwarves were also fast in friendship and love. This is exemplified by Gimli's friendship with Legolas. Though initially cold to each other, they grow to be the best of friends.
Furthermore, after the Battle of Helm's Deep, Gimli goes to great lengths to describe the beauty of the caves he beheld while in its depths, which deeply impresses the elf.
In the later workings, Tolkien writes that Gimli went with Legolas to the Undying Lands - the only Dwarf to do so.
DEFINETLY..Though I may have mixed feelings about the hoobit I loved the portrayal of Dwarves...
Thank you SO much for making this with more of Tolkien's verses. I hate it when critics complain about there being too many songs in LOTR and the Hobbit books...are they KIDDING? Those songs MAKE Middle-Earth! You should be on the Tolkien Ensemble...you and your kin; thank you.

I think with lotr it is more cuz it's big as in the story goes big there were characters everywhere and in the grand scheme of things it was about elves about humans about dwarfs about hobbits etc etc it was going everywhere but the hobbit is just a story of a dude going in an adventure and it follows the reason it started which is why it looks small compared to lotr
I think one issue people find is that the hobbit movies had the lotr feeling when it's meant to feel like a fantastical children's tale, not an epic fantasy adventure like lotr
Songs that tell fantasy stories always send shivers up my spine. This rendition runs circles around the song sung in the animated movie from the late ‘70s.
In some ways, fantasy stories often tell more universally relatable stories than even non-fiction. Sometimes, what is imagined feels more real.

Two new verses recently found scribbled on the back of a shopping list and used as a book mark in one of J.R.R.Tolkien's cook books;
Far beneath the lonely mountain steep
From jeweled throne to iron keep
Our Brothers sang as hammers rang
When will our people cease to weep
The dragon stirs in the gloom
He takes to wing to meet his doom
The bowman’s dart flies to its mark
The worm falls deep in waters dark

Well, who knows? Interestingly, "hammers rang" appears in a verse in The Hobbit, so he might have been playing with ideas which he rejected or forgot about. Apparently he often found inspiration over a few pints, but didn't always remember where he had written stuff down.

the genius of the mind of Tolkein is unparalleled. he spoke fluently 35 different languages and was a man of deep and abiding Faith. There will one day be more men like him but not until we have a great deal of sufffering.
I agree to an extent. I do think there are more like him now. They just haven't had the chance to show it yet.
Why should we suffer for great people to arise? Are we their inspiration? Or do great people exist regardless of our suffering status? A great mind do not need us. A great mind gifts us, and we absorb that gift, because it is a beautiful one, given freely to us for us.
@@someonesomewhere3055 Great minds are often forged in the toughest of times, unfortunately
Where in the world did you get 35 from? That's an insane statistic for anybody, even Tolkien. I looked up how many languages he could speak, and though I couldn't find any actual sources on the matter, the highest number I got back was 14. Even other unsourced claims are more believable.
Am reading the Trilogy for the fortieth time, and I've discovered something new. Did you know... When the hobbits meet in Crickhollow and Frodo agrees that the four of them will travel together, Merry and Pippin have prepared a song. It's sung to this same tune.
Farewell we call to hearth and hall
Though wind may blow and rain may fall...
This is from the LOTR: Fellowship book: It's sung the same way. Frodo comes up with the last line on the spot:
Farewell we call to hearth and hall!
Though wind may blow and rain may fall,
We must away ere break of day
Far over the wood and mountain tall.
To Rivendell, where Elves yet dwell
In glades beneath the misty fell,
Through moor and waste we ride in haste,
And whither then we cannot tell.
With foes ahead, behind us dread,
Beneath the sky shall be our bed,
Until at last our toil be passed,
Our journey done, our errand sped.
We must away! We must away!
We ride before the break of day!
Actually, Merry and Pippin had prepared the song for their departure from Bucklebury.
Fun fact: I am reading the book for the first time and just got to that part, immediately paused and went to relisten to this song, god it's so gorgeous
Isn't this song from the hobbit book?

I'm sorry to hear that :( Hopefully he's in a good place now.
It's nice to see that people still listen to this song.
the work is timeless, we can only hope that the timeless are not forgotten
E Rod It won't
This is what should be considered music!
The moment they sing this in the book up is my favourite part, you just feel their sorrow and pain. They did well with adapting to the big screen, but it could have been longer like here.
I just love the fact that people comes back to this masterpiece everyday
The soundtrack is easily the best thing to come out of the Hobbit films.
I got chills, nostalgia, sadness and heroism at the same time...
I have been reading aloud 2 pages a day of the Hobbit to my grandmother, translated in my grandmother's mother tongue. We just read this song today, and I'm going to show her this video now. Thank you so much!
Did you show it to her?
@@voldemort9214 yes ❤️ she loved the visuals so much and the music too. Then she read the English version of the song too, and it's been a great time reading this with her.
@@KaustubhVarshneyPnpl Awesome! Seems like you've an awesome gran, take care of her! 😊
This is one of my favorite songs of all time
I can see our grandchildren (if it comes to that) looking at this with equal awe!
Something like:
"Poppa, look at this soundtrack!"
"Ah, yes, my boy. I remember that one, it was a master piece of my youth!"
"What's it about?"
"Well, my boy, it begins, well, as you might expect. In a hole in the ground, there lived a Hobbit..."
"I wanna go there too!!!"
Jason Shea this was a hobbit hole
Good food and a warm hearth.
Back in my day we used to have only 2 genders! :P (Joking BTW don't take me seriously)
Ghady Khalil
Well, I got ya bro! I see what you mean ;)
MsJarcek did you just assume i only have 2 genders ? (That's why)
I memorized this poem long before it became a song. The first time and when I watched the Hobbit I fell instantly in love with this song. Thank you for all you do for creating these wonderful works of art. The Arkenstones of Song.
The greatest thing is listening to this song, holding the book in my hand, and being able to read the same lyrics straight out of the book. This makes me happy
That weird feeling when you realize this video is 9 years old
Ian McKellan has been old my entire life xD
I was just watching Rings of power and remembered this
@@Niraol Sorry you watched that drivel.
@@bigwinz yeah, but I really couldn't resist lol
I was so saddened when the movie version of the dwarve's song was reduced to a mere few verses. i wanted the full version to be produced. thank you for the beautiful complete version, J.R.R. Tolkien would be pleased.
Yes too short for such a beautiful poem. But the music is great.
This movies remind me of my father so much, he does not enjoys movies overall. However he sat and saw this movie with me when he overheard the dwarves singing this song. He then asked for the first time in my life to go to a cinema to see the third part of the Hobbit when it came out.
He heard the calling ... of this beautiful movie's. Your Father has good taste in choosing a good movie to watch. 😊👍
Wish my dad would've enjoyed these movies but I can't tear him away from John Wayne.
I wish I knew anyone around me who liked the movies
Sea where are you my friend?
1 minute of silence for the people who don’t know this song exists.
This whole series was an experience at the theatre. They don't make stuff near as good anymore.
I really adore the aesthetic of dwarves in fantasy. The vast underground cities, the huge statues, the mining, the digging; the intricate metalwork and gems; the heavy weapons and armour; the sombre thoughtfulness and unfathomable abyss of their world; the kingdoms of earth and fire... I hate it when they're shown as bumbling fat jolly drunkards in some universes (like in WoW).
And this song is practically *_oozing_* the dwarven aesthetics. So good.
I wonder if the music reflects a Welsh Bardic ode.
Could it be in another way?
3:19 is just the most beautiful thing.
You should really visit Ireland then.
Then i recommend going to new Zealand..
its all pretty much real locations in new zeland
NilZakaLinX most people would love to i know id love to ive seen pictures and it really looks wonderful and breath taking but who can afford that?
it gives you the chills
Who else grew up listening to this on loop before bed?
Anyone listening now? We shall all go on mighty quests one day, to restore faith in us all!
this song is a work of art from the universe of lord of the rings
I did it, but in my mind the first time i read the Hobbit in the 90's (i was there Gandalf, 3000 years i was there)
I always come back to this masterpiece and till this day the comments are fresh like from hours ago which truly makes me happy. Tbh I think they need to make a online lotr world where its like skyrim but online and you get to explore and do quests
Lord of The rings online is kind of old but its like WOW but in middle earth
I played this for my iguana...
Now he's a dragon.
Wow just execute it for the sake of everyone please do that for everyone in the world obviously.
TOSS IT INTO THE FIRE!!!
Oh for pity's sake!! Not all dragons are evil. Probably not even those of Middle Earth Third Age. Dwarves, Elves and Men weren't running around trying to kill them all. The Celts, Chinese and Japanese revere and respect them for their wisdom. Grow the heck up.
@@vixendoe2545 ye but I’m from the culture having them be destroyers of villages and cities
it makes me remember the first time I watched the hobbit nearly 10 years ago, man I love it
When I was a kid I went to my friend's house and he loved the hobbit movies so much that we watched the entire trilogy ever time I came over, and when I asked him about it he didn't remember. That really made me sad.
@@thebeezkneez7559 I did not expect that ending😂
UA-cam didn't recommend this Y'all search for this.
Nah, it actually did recommend this for me
You best believe it! the biggest injustice of the Hobbit movies is not putting the whole song in, so you best bet I'm looking for a full version XD.
Yes I did actually. I really felt the urge today to hear this song.
Music is a language that everyone could understand 😌
It's so nice to see the lotr community alive and thriving most movies would of died a month after release but not lotr or hobbit look at endgame no one is talking about it still but lotr I hear people hum the songs
I agree about what lotr and hobbit, but endgame is still very much alive lol. It is not even close to the truth to claim that is not still being discussed.
Just because you don't talk about Endgame doesn't mean nobody remembers it. If you watch any kind of video involving Endgame you can see that people are still commenting. Go and see 'Portals' by Alan Silvestri and you will see a lot of new comments and you'll see that it still gains views, like it has 30 mil views. If you go and watch any Endgame audience reaction video you'll see people are talking about how they remember watching this movie on opening night and how amazing it was. Tbh Hobbit and LotR are more dead than Endgame nowadays. I'm not saying that people have forgotten LotR (I'm pretty sure they forgot Hobbit lmao) but let's be honest, Endgame is more a live than LotR nowadays.
@@pawepetek7294 I was comparing between endgame and lotr I know endgame is alive but not as much as lotr. Lotr had more lore and a lot of people like to talk about it
@@kawaii_dragonadam3211
What are you talking about lmao LotR is not more alive than Endgame. LotR was popular when it released and now nobody talks about it. You're just delusional.
@@pawepetek7294 you really have no life if you read my last comment I explained my opinion so go bother someone else you prick
Glad to see that some of the comments were published just a few minutes ago while the video was published more than 6 years ago!

Crazy now many new comments are on this video after 9 years of being posted on UA-cam. Hello, new people. Welcome to this masterpiece
hi :)
there
Cause this is timeless
I was in Switzerland climbing a mountain in Crans-Montana on a tour, and I turned around after hiking with no water for about an hour on rough, steep terrain, feeling the cold, loneley whisper of the wind going alongside the mountain as I climbed to the summit, and as I got as far as I could time wise, I played this song on my phone and looked in awe at the beauty of the European Alps.
Reminds me of when I walked an hour through Boston in the middle of the night to see the USS Constitution. When I finally got there, I stood on a seawall in front of the ship and played "Don't forget your old shipmate" on my phone. And sang along. And then an MP showed up and kicked me out. It was worth it.
I live in Boston. HA! Is it that magical at night??
The dark filled the room
The fire died down
The shadows were lost....
And still they played on.
This is the song I use for my sons lullaby EVERY NIGHT. He loves it and so do I.
Me too ♡
He'll probably grow up to be a great DM :D
Hes gonna grow a BEARD betcha
Evija3000 his dad can grow a really full beard in a very short period of time haha!
Tolkien truelly was an exceptional man
He fought in WWI on the Frontline, seeing probably things just as terrifying as any of his creations in LoTr
its very sad that he didnt live to watch his work came out as movies and songs
@@pedromorgado5368 yeah, but Im glad he died in 1973..
Because there were:
3 Kings for the elven Kings
7 for the dwarven lords
9 for the mortal men
1 for the dark lord...
Even years and years after the movie was released, this song still gives me goosebumps... So much emotions, so much nostalgia ! What a masterpiece ! The voices, the music, the pictures, everything is just PERFECT ! I'll never get tired of listening to this ! :-)
FOSSE Valérie you are so right
Who's going on a youtube marathon hearing every version of this song???

The best stories, the best songs, the best memories
Wow!!! This really is an excellent piece of singing. I was convinced that it was actually part of the soundtrack for the film.
