    Great video Jeff! It’s crazy how much browse you can make in a year with hinge cutting trees! And taking some of the mature trees out and open that canopy! Even hinge cutting on your travel corridors from bedding to food plots...

    I use triple 10 and triple 19 a lot to put on the briars and honey suckle and the big white oaks there on my lease. For two years after I put it around the trees they’ll be full of acorns. I make sure it’s goin to rain a couple days after I put it on the trees and browse to melt it and soak it in. We’re expecting rain and storms comin here starting tomorrow through Sunday. After it dries enough I’m goin to put a couple plots in. Wish I’d had time to do it earlier since I’m limited out now on turkeys but been busy with honey do stuff. Be safe praying for you and your family brother GOD BLESS Amen.

    After cutting at my sister's I found the habitat get that much better - not because of hinge cuts - but because of golden rod and stump sprouting.

    Great Video! Browse is so key and often overlooked. I'm not sure if this falls under the browse umbrella but what are your thoughts on Multiflora Rose? When traveling around the country do you tend to see deer browsing on / bedding in it or do they typically avoid those areas? The stuff is nasty and from what I've read most landowners try to get rid of it, but a I've stumbled across a few forums where guys like it. I can't say that I've seen any of my SW MI deer browsing on it...But I guess just because I haven't seen them browsing on it, doesn't mean they aren't. So before made any drastic measures are taken I wanted to know your thoughts since I really value your opinion! If anyone else has Multiflora Rose on their property, feel free to let me know how your deer relate to it :)

    Great video Jeff. It was great meeting you in the airport the other day. We will start to put these philosophies to work this weekend, it will take a few years to change over our land but hopefully I'm telling all the great stories in the coming years. We are starting with Switchgrass and hinge cuts and working from there. Our woods is half old growth hardwoods, with old growth aspen, old maple and general zero browse. Curious what your thoughts are on when to re-cut aspen? We have stands 35 years old, and mature, and some 17 years old that is now old enough that it provides no browse. Thanks again for the information and I hope to meet again.

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  5 років тому

      Hi Todd...Great meeting you too, really appreciate you saying hello! The food thing about all of this is that it can change in just a quick couple of years. The #1 aspect is stand location and access...which boils down to how effectively that you hunt the land.
      Aspen needs to be completely cut so that the lateral root system can explode with growth. No hinge cutting needed. Make sure that all of your cuttings get full sunlight 🙂 have fun!

    Hey brother I’m running late on videos as usual. Had to do some maintenance on my old huntin truck this morn and had a honey do list today to. That’s one thang I can say there’s plenty of browse on my lease. Plenty of briars and honey suckle to.

    Great info! The food plot craze seems to have everyone overlooking browse. I think everyone should would just as hard “or harder” on their browse as part of their overall property plan. One thing I learned that you can establish the red osier dogwood but planting fresh cut stems about as thick as pencil right into the ground. Seems to good to be true but I’m going to try it! Have you heard of this? Great video as always! Thanks!

    • @kevindice1092
      @kevindice1092 5 років тому +1

      david kese sure can! I’ve started hundreds the last two winters by simply poking a hole in the soil with a rod, then pushing a dogwood cutting in as deeply as I can. If the soil is damp, my success rate is about 75%.

    Jeff, towards the end you spoke about aspen regeneration. On my parcel there are massive, mature aspen pockets that we are removing when we log. Will this still cause the root systems to regenerate and produce more? Great video and thanks!

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  5 років тому

      Matthew it sure will! Should be outstanding regeneration as long as it isn't much and they are crushing the lateral root system in the process...

    I’m looking into planting a bush food plot. Some yews which stay around all winter and American beauty berry. I was wondering why more people don’t do that considering bushes will last a long time if you let them get mature before the deer eat them down.

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  4 роки тому

      Hi Nate! The problem with any browse is that without a solid, high quality food source to go along with it, you can't build a herd around it. The same goes for acorns, chestnuts, soft mads and hardwood regen. It is a GREAT compliment to a quality food plot as daytime bedding cover and browse...but is definitely not a substitute for high quality, season long food.

    • @natee2169
      @natee2169 4 роки тому

      Whitetail Habitat Solutions Yeah I plan on making about a half acre food plot of rhye grass, clover and some winter stuff. The bushes would be in addition to that. I just always figured how they eat everyone’s bushes in residential areas they must really like them lol

    I have huge Red Osia Dogwood bushes in my browse plots that are eight foot tall, with bases over an inch. I tried cutting some down to a foot tall last winter and they turned brown and died. I'm going to try cutting some to within two or three feet and see what happens, but didn't expect they would be so sensitive.

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751

      Not really? But there is a great way to improve stands of oak, by focusing Maxim sunlight onto your greatest mast producing trees. Check out this article from the QDMA...

      We used a metal fence post that we welded foot pegs on it,then we made holes with it around the perimeter of the tree under the drip line of the canopy..filled these holes up w 13-13-13 or similar fertilizer, kick some dirt over it and go to neck tree..important to remove other species of trees that are severely crowding the oaks canopy..can use fertilizer spikes but more costly..might take a few years but you should notice a difference, and it can't hurt,something else to get yourself out in your woods..just stick w the oaks near or around your stand sites

    Now the trick of how to create the buck vacuum with having a good woody browse plot.
    4 year old 7 acre clear cut, no summer plots, 4 Kieffer pear trees, 2 red delicious and 2 granny smiths, and 4 chinese chestnuts, all 3 years old. Hoping to become the fall attraction in the area.

      It's a great time of year Yogi, which is a great thing. Time of recovery...deer are really beginning to spread out and you can tell does are navigating more towards Summer fawning grounds...bucks towards their Summer habitat areas. Had a pic of 5 bucks in a bachelor group just from a few days ago.
      If you do have many oaks...limiting oaks is a great way to increase Fall/Winter browse.

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  5 років тому +1

      No it is not...good question! I do not recommend hinging during leaf out, but waiting until the end of July will get you past any potential oak wilt worries and also August is a great time for trees entering Summer dormancy where a lot of a trees life is pulled back into the base and root system of the tree. Late July/August is a great time to cut and you will out side cover and structure on the ground that deer can relate to for cover in the Fall and Winterinter months. The regen will be ready to explode in the Spring of 2020...
