This song always makes me think of my granddad who is of the ripe old age of 96. He was a pilot in the Second World War flying in hurricanes, spitfires, Lancasters, thunderbolts and just about every other aircraft available to the RAF. He was in the Battle of Britain as well as many others.
I remember one story he told me about when he was in a Lancaster bomber carpet bombing Germany. Grandad was in the co-pilot seat, they’re being tailed by a Messerschmitt and suddenly the central gunner’s head explodes and he falls limp out of the turret.
No words are exchanged between pilot and copilot but the pilot gestures with a subtle flick of his eye brows toward the back of the plane as an instruction to Grandad to go and fill the empty gunner seat. So he did just that and ran down the plane corridor, climbed up into the turret and started firing back again.
Can you imagine what that would have been like? Wow.
As you can probably tell, I am very proud of him.

Shawn Powell Yeah he’s alive and well. What’s interesting is that for years he wouldn’t talk to anyone about the war, not my grandmother nor my dad or any of his siblings. But me his grandson everybody is amazed he is opening up and taking to. It could be because I dared to ask about it when no one else did. It’s interesting nonetheless.

This is inspired by the Battle of Britain in the summer of 1940, the first battle entirely fought in the air. Hitler wanted to invade the UK, to achieve that he needed air superiority so launched bombing raids against RAF airfields, vastly out numbered the RAF managed to defeat the Luftwaffe and Hitler postponed the invasion indefinitely (that's a brief version of the story, we had help from the Poles, Czechs, Commonwealth countries and even a handful of U.S. pilots volunteered for the RAF, most pilots were barely 20 and may have had only 10 hours learning to fly thier Spitfires or Hurricanes) get tickets to the summer tour, they open with this song with a replica Spitfire above the stage, this and the rest of the show is mind blowing! I found out he was a WWII ace, actually double ace, almost triple as he shot down 14 Japanese aircraft. After WWII he worked for Hughes Aircraft and was even Howard Hughes' personal pilot at one point. He was still working for Hughes in the late 80s when we graduated. I lost touch with my friend, but thanks to Facebook, we still keep in touch. His father died in 2008, a badass of a man.

Great song! I joined the Army in 1987, Infantryman. Was stationed in Illesheim, West Germany from 87-89. I went to the ‘Monsters of Rock 88’ in Schweinfurt, West Germany. What a day! David Lee Roth, Great White, Treat, Testament, KISS, Anthrax, and Iron Maiden. Unbelievable concert!

When this song was written Bruce Dickinson was not a plane enthusiast, nor begun his pilots license nor was he public figure.
He was however training to be an Olympic fencer, so it would be true of ‘Flash of the Blade’.

My great grandfather (canadian) fought in the first world war when he was 15... the army told him he was too young but because he was so poor with no alternatives they took him in. He was also a gunner during WW2 I know this song is about pilots but still it still reminds me of him. Too bad I never knew him I heard crazy story from his daughter ( my grandmother). If it wasn't for those heros, we wouldnt be living this good today.

I once took a trip to Normandy over Memorial Day weekend. Our group's tour guide was a German who had been a kid during WW2. Before we went to the beaches and American cemetery, the guide took us to a German cemetery. This was the late 90s. It was the first time I really understood, what you said. Those guys weren't Nazis. They were just soldiers fighting for their country.
Look forward to the next Iron Maiden song.

Hey vin and sorri. It’s nice to hear you guys acknowledge these pilots which Churchill called the few. The Battle of Britain which this song is about was the tale of the RAF. Against the Luftwaffe. But the RAF in this fight constituted pilots from Britain ,Australia, many free polish pilots, Canadian and even Israeli. South African, and even an American eagle squadron I think. Pilots were gentleman during the war and respected each other greatly. If you guys ever have time watch the classic movie The Battle of Britain. It will give you some perspective to this song. Plus the planes were real and not CGI. Keep the great reactions coming guys.🤘

Of course, families of the band members especially Steve Harris, bassist were involved during WWII because opening credit during live version has Winston Churchill does one of his famous chat on the airwaves to comfort & inspired his citizens of Great Britain as they huddled in the famous London Underground during air raids by Germany's ME-109's that was mentioned in the song.

*‘Never in the history of mankind, have so many, owed so much, to so few"* - Winston Churchill said to the `few´ fighter pilots, who fought the Battle Of Britain against the Nazi-blitz and fended them of, to save the island. The UK-pilots were almost kids - some just 18 years old. The average age among them all was just 20 years old. Almost kids, facing this onslaught from the Nazis.
This was before UK had built up a large air-force - and before the alliance with the USA - and had to fight ferociously against a much larger Nazi-force, in superior number, and far better equipment and fighter planes. >> ua-cam.com/video/4sFewhTAdjs/v-deo.html

I'm well aware that Churchill became (to put it in kind terms) a patriarchal, racist, flag-toting utter asshole for British Empire conquests. I'm not saying that's a good thing to be either. Frankly, I'd be happy to see his statue get vandalised more often. However, does the fact that victory in WW2 did not lead the world to some sort of systematic conquering, and eventual total replacement by "der Herrenmenschen" not, at least, bring you to the conclusion that Hitler and his Nazis (which had supplanted the original party) were _to some degree_ worse than Churchill (even if not by leaps and bounds) in their active ideologies?
Criticism is fine. Encouraged, really. However, hyperbole doesn't lend itself to what is actually productive.
