Last year I learned how to play this on the piano (by ear). I played it for my friend, and she made me stop halfway through because of the feels. But the thing was, she was only on season one. That's how powerful Murray Gold's music is.
We all change, when you think about it. We're all different people, all through our lives: and that's good, you've got to keep moving...Just so long as you remember all the people that you used to be. I will not forget one line of this, not one day... I swear. I will always remember, when The Doctor was me.
"Listen. This is just a dream. But very clever people can hear dreams. So please just listen. I know you're afraid, but being afraid is all right. Because didn't anybody ever tell you? Fear is a superpower. Fear can make you faster, and cleverer, and stronger. And one day, you're gonna come back to this barn, and on that day, you're going to be very afraid indeed. But that's okay. Because if you're very wise and very strong, fear doesn't have to make you cruel or cowardly. Fear can make you kind. ... It doesn't matter if there's nothing under the bed, or in the dark, so long as you know it's okay to be afraid of it. So listen. If you listen to nothing else, listen to this: you're always going to be afraid, even if you learn to hide it. Fear is like... a companion. A constant companion, always there. But that's okay. Because fear can bring us together. Fear can bring you home. I'm gonna leave you something just so you'll always remember. Fear makes companions of us all."
"Can you hear the Whisper Men The Whisper Men are near If you hear the Whisper Men Then turn away your ear Do not hear the Whisper Men Whatever else you do For once you've heard the Whisper Men they'll stop... ...and look at you"
So this song is a play on "This is Gallifrey", the Doctor's secret is his incarnation that killed the all Daleks and Time Lords, and at the very end of the song is a few soft notes on just the piano. Guys... the notes are the last ones in the song all alone just like the Doctor is... Holy TARDIS of Gallifrey, Murray Gold you are brilliant!
Ohhh the nostalgia, the feels of Gallifrey! If only Ten could hear- I'll stop there. Before my feelings decide to kill me. Once again. Hell, this show really knows how to build you up and crash you down. On the same time.
From all tracks that got only played once in the series, this is certainly the best one.

Update: I am no longer of this opinion. For example the music that plays while the Doctor breaks the wall is great and many others throughout the series.
I think Name of the Doctor is a very underappreciated finale. It's not as dark as The Parting of the Ways Or as gut wrenching as The Doctor Falls Or as epic as Journey's End Or has the scale and fan service as Doomsday But it has heart and beauty. With tragedy, suspense, a menacing villain and the promise of something greater to come. Not to mention how fun it was to see Clara interacting with each Doctor. It's humility to me in the presence of greater stories somehow has a majesty to it.
did anybody but me notice a cryptic meaning to the fall of the eleventh? They were talking about day of the doctor... This was set on november 23. November is the eleventh month and if something is near the end, its the fall so fall of the eleventh=november 23
The Fall of the Eleventh is the day when the Eleventh Doctor falls. Meaning the Fall of the Eleventh is the Siege and later War of Trenzalore. Not Day of the Doctor.
CLARA: So who was she, the lady with the funny name and the space hair? DOCTOR: An old friend of mine. CLARA: What, like an ex? DOCTOR: Yes, an ex. River asked Vastra for the exact words. What were they? CLARA: The Doctor has a secret he will take to the grave. It is discovered. Doctor? (The Doctor cries.) DOCTOR: Sorry. And it was Trenzalore? Definitely Trenzalore? CLARA: Yeah. DOCTOR: Oh dear. Sorry.
you've got a very good ear, because it IS "This Is Gallifrey" just with the main melody removed! most of this piece actually is the main theme from "This Is Gallifrey" repeated over and over, but you don't notice it because the melody is gone and the harmony has been reduced to a few basic chords. but if you sing the main theme along with it, you'll hear how perfectly it fits in. it's like Murray Gold is giving us a musical representation of the void Gallifrey has left on the universe, and in the Doctor's mind and hearts.
@@joeuphonium Oh my goodness! This breakdown of the music beautifully explains why we never heard the "This Is Gallifrey" theme in 11's era! I can't believe that had never occurred to me; because of Gallifrey being sealed in the Time War from 10 before he regenerated, it is now officially dead and gone forever to 11. The thought of his grave, makes the Doctor realize how he will be the last Time Lord of Gallifrey, except the comfort of the main melody is gone. There is a 'void', like you said. Then, we don't hear that Gallifrey melody again (excluding Day of the Doctor and Time of the Doctor) until 12 and Missy rebuild their broken friendship in Extremis, indicating the Doctor has hope not only in his old friend but his people, too. Hope that they will change and begin to see the world the way he sees it, even if just for a second. Somebody needs to write a book breaking down the intricacies of Murray Gold's Doctor Who score, because there's so much subtext in it that so many people miss out on!
the first 3 seconds sound like The Wedding of River Song, then at about 5 seconds there's some slight influence from This is Gallifrey, I think. absolutely gorgeous and emotional.
The Doctor I always think of Four Knocks from 10's regeneration which makes it even sadder because this was when they both realized that their end was near
"Thats the problem, you didn't listen. You lot never do. 'The Doctor has a secret he will take to the grave, it is discovered' it wasn't my secret he was talking about. He was talking about my... grave. Trenzalore is where I'm... buried."
Does this remind anyone else of "Set Fire To The Rain" by Adele? You can literally sing each verse to this chord progression. "I let it fall my heart and as it fell you rose to claim it..."
“What I did I did without choice. In the name of peace and sanity,”
but not in the name of the doctor
he's the one that broke the promise

This song has parts of 'This is Gallifrey', so that's probably why she was feeling it.
@@MANJYOMETHUNDER111 she was one season one only, This is Gallifrey is used in season 3 and beyond

Yeah, that hit me in the feels
That piano.... It just adds to the feels.
There's a variation of this in The Doctor Falls when Missy kills the Master
how is this song so simple yet so heartbreaking??😭😭

@ The music played when the Doctor is hitting the wall was also played in The Day Of The Doctor, it's called Sheperd's Boy.
@@fabiowarlock I might not have seen that episode yet when I made that comment.
Well, actually, that doesn't fully explain why I made that original comment even, because "Vale decem" was way earlier.
@ vale got used again in twice upon a time and appeared in earlier 10th Doctor episodes in snippets

BrassB0nes Yeah but Fall is for American english. British use Autumn.
The 23rd November is a significant date for Who history as its the date of the very first broadcast.

Absolutely love the new take on "This is Gallifrey" (my favorite song), this song is beautiful
By far one of the best seasons. Matt has the ability to make you laugh and cry all within a matter of seconds. He will be truly missed.

I'm seeing all the "10 years ago" and it's making me nostalgic
Hearing it briefly in the show again in 2024 gave me the most chills ever.
The music for this entire episode is just incredible.

This piece right here is one of the reasons DW is so amazing... Bless you Murray Gold!
