There's a theory that it's more powerful when the Doctor tries to resist it, but imo it's just because of emotion in general. 13 was clearly excited for what was to come and yet hers was one of the most intense yet

If he didn't want to give up the role why did he resign? Bit stupid of him.
Literally stop making things up, the line wasn't written by Tennant, it was written by Russell T Davies. Tennant decided it was time to leave and left the show. RTD's book even makes it clear Tennant was offered Series 5 with Steven Moffat, considered it and then declined.
Tennant was ready to leave the role and he did so voluntarily. The character is a different person. Don't mix them up

@@markwalker8846 I think the instinct is for them to be in the time Vortex when they regenerate. However, after Nine, the regenerations started to get VIOLENT... usually because they were delayed (Ten because he held it back because he wanted to do the tour of his friends and companions before changing, Eleven because he actually was dying of old age (Though most of that damage was used productively in traumatizing the Daleks again) and Twelve because he was fighting it even harder than Ten was)

  • @fourkneeyay
    @fourkneeyay Рік тому +658

I have a head-canon about 10's regeneration I've never been able to shake. It's set up by his comments during events leading up to the regeneration when he says things like, "Sometimes I think the Time Lord lives too long" to Wilf in the diner, echoed right before he steps into the control booth to release Wilf. In my head-canon, the entire sequence of 10 searching out and revisiting his friends and former companions was to say a true goodbye, because he'd decided in that moment that he saves Wilf that the Time Lord does, in fact, live too long -- he intended to reject regeneration and end his life.
He holds this resolve all the way to the end of his final journey through time and space, taking solace in reconnecting with the ones he treasured, ending with his sly foreshadowing to Rose at Powell Estates. He holds his resolve as he enters his TARDIS for what he thinks is the final time...and then, right at the final moment, he pauses. It hits him all at once as he looks down at the regeneration energy struggling to do its work. Alone at the end, he has just enough flash of doubt, and he realizes that he can't give it up. He knows in his very core that he has more that he wants to do and, in that brief moment, his resolve breaks, and he utters the famous line. And with that, the universe avoids the greatest of all tragedies...having to exist without the Doctor as a part of it.

that is amazing and i can totally see how this could be... just imagine the trauma, that feeling of loss of identity that comes after every regeneration - yes you get to live on but its a life altering event much like a heart attack, stoke or major illness as a human leaves us never the same again! Even 14 isnt the same as 10 because he/she has been through so much as 11, 12 and 13 that it would be impossible to be the same person!

Two's regeneration is rather horrific in hindsight. In the episode the Time Lords say that his sentence is exile and "changing his appearance." Well now we know that it's called regeneration and it triggers upon the death of the body.
So really the Time Lords executed him, and then exiled him. Usually it's a choice between one or the other. Poor Number Two got both.
Also, Doctor Who doesn't do dry humor like Nicholas Courtney does anymore. 5:36 to 5:54 is as underrated as it is understated.

Also, I just love the idea that Eight - a highly moral Doctor, partly in reaction to his previous self's grand scheming - gives up everything he is in his final moments, believing that he'll never be the Doctor again and preparing to become a warrior. The one thing that breaks my heart is how short the 9th Doctor’s time was. And I don’t just mean Eccleston’s contract, I mean lore wise. In the first episode, Rose, the Doctor reacts to his appearance like he’d not seen it yet, implying that at MOST a week or two had past since the Time War, since he’d (as far as he remembered due to the tangled time streams) used the Moment and killed his entire species.
So he only got to be in that form for like 6 months, if that, before he died again.
And knowing that it was so soon for him after the Time War, it explains why he was so cold, and distant and why he seemed to be searching out things to fix when he met Rose. Because I highly doubt he conveniently arrived in 2005 London just at the same time as the Nestene Consciousness was making their move. It felt like he’d been seeking aliens out, trying to be the hero again, because his last memories were pure destruction, at his own hands.
It also explains why whilst yes he was sad he was dying, and a new man was about to take his place he was less stressed than his successor would be, because he honestly hadn’t been around long enough to grow attached to this particular face of his. He seemed more concerned about how his regeneration was going to freak Rose out and likely confuse and scar her, as it had for so many of his other companions.

Honestly, in retrospect, Nine seems borderline suicidal. He recklessly rushed into danger _so_ many times, and is so pessimistic about peoples' survival chances as a whole ("Just _this once_ , everybody lives!"), it starts to get a bit questionable. (And, y'know, he outright planned to kill himself taking out the Nestene Consciousness in _Rose_ .) With that in mind, his last line takes on a whole new meaning. Something like, say, "Rose, you were fantastic. And you know what? So was I! I'm not some monster that killed his own species to save the rest of the universe. I'm not some mass murderer who doesn't deserve to live. I'm the Doctor again."

Actually all the other doctors were around for hundreds of years before they regenerated, so most likely 9 was as well, as they all traveled on their own at times. I think we can all agree that Eleven's regeneration was the saddest and Tenth's regeneration was the most epic. His TARDIS literally got torn apart and everything fell over and he was crashing and IT WAS JUST SO COOL! Though when he said "I don't wanna go..." did make me a bit sad because he was also my favorite doctor.

36:39 It occurs that this is one of the happiest regenerations we've gotten in a while. 12 had his new mission statement, but it was clear his lease on life was ended. 11, 10, 9? All of them focused on what was getting left behind, compounded by the presence of the companion looking fearful and sad at the loss of "their" Doctor.

9 & 10 both had short lives and were cut short due to sudden events.
The whole "reset" thing around 11 to all Matt to do a goodbye scene kind of pivots that whole thing one way. And that he gets jumped back to his younger form just to give it up does lend into the focusing on the past. But 11 also went from being "the man who forgets" to "the man who has chosen not to forget" after day of the doctor.
12 learned the lessons 11 always struggled to and while he can reflect back on his life, he knew it was time to go and to look ahead.

@-sageaegis-292 I get that was the intention, but the way it was shot heavily implies 9 hasn't been around very long when he meets Rose.
And as nothing in the episodes definitively says one way or the other, Davies and Moffat can just say what they want.

Ten's regeneration will always be one of my favourites (simply because of that GODLY Murray Gold score combined with the incredible visuals of the TARDIS exploding), but I've got to hand it to Chibnall: he delivered a stunning regeneration for 13. For the same reasons I love 10's regen, but with a little more hope and happiness. Plus having her do it on a cliff to a sunset is actually inspired, rather than have her blow up the TARDIS with the energy again.

Probably said somewhere below, but never noticed the female version of the Doctor was the only new Who version with the sense to step OUTSIDE the TARDIS before regenerating, thus saving it taking damage during regeneration. one thing that i really like about the 11th to 12th regeneration is that it allows for the valeyard. the valeyard was always said to be between the 12th and 13th incarnations, so with the war doctor included and the metacrisis not included because it wasn't a new face for the doctor, that means the valeyard is between matt smith and peter capaldi. when the change happens, you don't see the transition between the faces, it's a cut. so, in between that cut, the valeyard was made, did the trial of a timelord stuff, and then came back to become peter capaldi. i love it.

Has to erase donnas mind or else she will destroy herself. Meets his future wife and loses her. Gets rose back just to have her go back to the alternate world and take the human clone with her. Just to finally think he has beaten the master and for him to come back and cause his death in the end. He even went to the end of time itself. He has the saddest story for me as he constantly lost everyone around him. He deserved better and I think this time around we will see everything he has to offer!
