Nadia Ignacio oh noo. Idk how I didn’t see this reply but the ukulele has four strings: G, C, E, and A from top to bottom. Basically what I mean is you pluck the e string on 5th fret then on your left hand you thrust your finger onto the 7th fret without plucking and it makes a sound. Then you make sure another finger is on the 4th fret of that string and you pull the finger that was on the 7th fret off like if you were plucking with ur left hand. Look up hammer one and pull offs. Same set of rules for the second part
Hello Stu at Ukulele Zen! I'm a newcomer to the uke and have been fortunate to be able to take lessons with a teacher via Zoom but was looking for more to learn in between lessons. I want to be good. Thank you for this engaging video! Take care!
A ❤ doesn't do justice to how much I enjoyed this. So much information conveyed in a systematic and easily understable way. My first introduction to using a metronome: it's an awesome practice tool. I felt bad not buying it a beer 😂 I'm nowhere at a level to the play the song like you do but I can now strum a new way and have learnt to mute. Going slow is such good advice. You have the skill to make learning fun despite it being challenging. I smiled throughout the lesson. And you're just so darn likeable as well. Keep sharing those great vibes.
If I could hand pick a ukulele teacher to teach me in person, it would be you. But, nonetheless I’m happy to have you on UA-cam... I can take you anywhere with me this way. I like to go chill in my eno out in the woods on our property and watch/learn your tutorials. Every time we have a bonfire, I’m expected to bust some new uke jams out. Your videos have helped me learn so much! There’s something about learning to play the uke with you that makes it all make sense. My uke skills have improved a lot since becoming a subscriber. Thanks for the awesome techniques and good vibes. ✌️

If I had more hours in the week, I would make guitar videos :-) Glad you make the connections. A sign of a true self-directed learner. Be well & happy playing, Stu
I think that finger placement is a fundamental detail. my model is to use as little as possible, so a d chord I use my index sometime's add my middle to get a clearer tone response, and that way I can play fill's at the same time without even changing the strum pattern
I hear you… and couldn’t agree more… Having options for your fingers to let go of chords and fill-in with riffs is a great thing to do to make this sound more full… And it’s just plain fun. Be well - Stu
Haha yo you cracked me up! Make it your friend. Just today I was telling myself man I need to use a metronome more. So did the guys I was jamming with. I’ think focusing on ukulele will improve my strum. Been playing since I was 18. Unfortunately I broke my pinky a year ago and it healed in a weird rotation and hypertension. Still been debating on rebreaking it with surgery but man would suck if it made it worse. Im 33. Love ukulele and all reggae music. Mostly all acoustic player.

Thanks for the video!! Super helpful--I am finally in rhythm!! After some practice though, I find that the only way to not lose the fretted chord is to keep holding it with fingers 1-3 and use the pinky finger to mute the strings on the up beats... Is this wrong? I'm not relaxing my whole hand! I've lost the chill!!
That's a great way to do it - just find what works for you....and go with it :-) Always a good idea to modify things so it's comfortable for you, the player.
It's the best tutorial of reggae strumming ever! Thank you ;) I finally found a purpose for one of my shitty ukuleles :p I'm just gonna use it to learn strumming on muted strings :D
Hi Melissa… Thanks so much for being here I'm glad you found my channel. I have other easier ways to play reggae this one is a tricky her one with the left-hand mute. Hope you'll subscribe for more videos from Ukulele Zen ;-) goo.gl/rMXsnw
Lots of things I find difficult in this one, but nice to have the chance to put them together with your clear explanation, as I've tried & failed to do this kind of strum a few times previously in the past! I've been working on different aspects over the last two days on & off. So far I still haven't sussed a way to do the foot tapping though without discomfort: I have an ankle problem, which makes it painful to tap my right foot (even just moving the toes up & down), doesn't seem to work trying the left instead. I don't know if it's because I'm left-handed but play the uke right-handed, so naturally want to do the rhythm on the left & it's causing a conflict. Or it's just tension because of the injury. I try for a while when asked to tap a foot & soon switch to just imagining it inside my head instead. Any thoughts or suggestions to help please? [I can do clapping or 'if you say it you can play it' but it would be nice to find an unobtrusive way of getting into the beat.]
I hear you...I think if you could tap your uninjured foot, that would work well. Another alternative s to feel the beat by moving your body to the groove in some other way. For example, you could gently bounce or sway in your seat as you play. Whatever feels natural for you and connects you to the rhythm of the music is good...by all means, explore what is most comfortable for you! Happy playing, Stu
Thanks. Coincidentally, one of our national radio stations has been playing reggae all day for the August Bank Hol to celebrate Trojan Records 50th anniversary, so I've been working on it whilst listening to see what I can come up with. So far my fave is still visualising the swinging arm of the metronome in my head :)
Thanks Cindy & thanks for watching! Sometime in 2019 I will be laughing a "Ukulele Zen" website with music & music meditation lessons...I'll share news of that here in my videos :) Be well & happy playing, Stu
Happy Trails, Stu, from Canby, Oregon! 🙋 With our new President-elect, i can come out of my dark hole of being terrified that my SSI & medicare were going to be stripped from us old farts!!! Happy to be hearing your excitement CharLee!! Reggae grooves always lift my spirit! Check out Bob Marley’ s “Survivors” album for lots of music appropriate for our time 😉🎶🤙🎉
Okay if i can pat my head and rub my tummy surely i can tap my feet and strum my uke. This was really fun. And so generous with the freebies. I'm such a noob but it really feels like my ukulele is an instrument of therapy. Hands up who gets withdrawals if they don't twang some strings forba couple days...? I'm still pretty crap but I don't care!!! Many thanks. ☺
You're amazing!! Great tutorial from an awesome teacher! Please, in need a help with the app, because there are many of them called "Tempo" , could you send me the link with the one that you use? Thanks in advance! Big hug from Buenos Aires to you!! ♥️♥️♥️
Thank you so much Lourdes! Glad you’re enjoying my videos and hope you’re subscribe to keep in the loop 😉 sorry, but I don’t have a direct link to the app I’m using… But if you search “tempo” in the Apple App Store you’ll find it there I believe it cost about four dollars US. Happy Jamming!
Really great tutorial; one query though: at the beginning (around 2:35)you say tap feet on beats 1 & 3: but at 4:36 (when you start talking about doubling) you say "my feet are still tapping on beats 2 & 4". My feets is confused man :)

Could you please post a video for the Three Little Birds chord solo version from your book? This was the first song I learned when I started playing ukulele a year ago and I would love to revisit it with a more challenging version. I just bought your book to learn When You Wish Upon a Star which is a great tool in conjunction with your video for it, but I'm finding it difficult to use the book without a video demo too....Thank you!

Thanks Louis...using left hand using is HARD at first, but worth the journey.
OMG! Just came across your channel! I'm in love! This is gonna give me some more practice with left-hand muting.
Hi Melissa… Thanks so much for being here I'm glad you found my channel. I have other easier ways to play reggae this one is a tricky her one with the left-hand mute. Hope you'll subscribe for more videos from Ukulele Zen ;-) goo.gl/rMXsnw
Rich in details. I was missing those valuables tips.
Thanks Silvio...I looove Reggae Music 😊🤙🎶
Such a legend.
Marley - a prophet of music!
WebmasterPLUC, Another way is to tap your heel, in the style of Miles Davis. I find this more comfortable than tapping my toes.
Thanks, that's a good idea. Definitely feels less uncomfortable at first try.
Omg! I was needing things, thank u soooo much
Good vibes to you Lula!
You are my new favorite! Thanks again for such GREAT content!!
Thanks so much Cory! Hope you enjoy the other vids on my channel & that your music keeps on flowing 🎶🤙😎

Ukulele Zen looking forward to it :-)
Happy Trails, Stu, from Canby, Oregon! 🙋 With our new President-elect, i can come out of my dark hole of being terrified that my SSI & medicare were going to be stripped from us old farts!!! This was a great song to start the NEW season of HOPE & restored balance to our government!
🎵 I'm loving the beat!!! Thank you for your awesome efforts! And I'm honored to be a student of yours ...i'm at that level of beginner expertise that your stuff is now making sense AND my fingers can follow along with muscle memory...!!! Blessings to you & your for a healthy & prosperpous Holiday season! 🙏
Happy to be hearing your excitement CharLee!! Reggae grooves always lift my spirit! Check out Bob Marley’ s “Survivors” album for lots of music appropriate for our time 😉🎶🤙🎉

Thanks for watching Jinni! Always good to hear from you :)
Nice session and way of explaining, thank you! I'm on guitar but I'm enjoying this.
SO COOL - you're the first person to comment you had a guitar with you...someday I'll have to make a guitar vid :-)
Is it me or did I miss the tabs for this song? Great tutorial!!!! Just didn’t see tabs!
Go to my website's store - free stuff in on the right if you scroll down & click. Enjoy!

Most welcome 😊
Great video you make it look so easy, & what a terrific voice 👍🏻

You're so welcome!!! Hope you'll subscribe for more videos like this one 🙏🎶. More reggae coming soon!
Really great tutorial; one query though: at the beginning (around 2:35)you say tap feet on beats 1 & 3: but at 4:36 (when you start talking about doubling) you say "my feet are still tapping on beats 2 & 4". My feets is confused man :)
I probably just had a brain malfunction, that's all ;-)
This guy's way higher than I am, and I'm pretty high
I’m “High on my own supply” these days, but the blessings of JAH are many… Be well and play on!
Ukulele Zen sounding like Wim Hoff :p

Sick vid bro. Thank. Love what you do.
Sweet! Reggae vibes 🎶🇯🇲 I could use some help with digital marketing once I get my newest e-books finished...any tips/info? I'm open: www.stufuchs.com/contact
Stu, you have the best tutorials haha. Free goodiesssss
why, thank you Desiree! I dig your diving videos :)
Thanks, Stu, played along with you.
All X chords for now.
Will move on to the real chords and the riff once I internalise the right hand rhythm.
