  • Regenerative Agriculture is on the rise, and young farmers are leading the way in South Africa. Van Wyk Pretorius, along with his wife Lilané, are pioneers of a new regenerative enterprise in George, South Africa.
Through bio-intensive farming, Van Wyk provides chemical-free vegetables and free range eggs to their local community, with their sights set to get their foot into the grass-fed meat market.
It’s young farmers and families like these that will play a crucial role in establishing new relationships with consumers, and offer a viable alternative to the industrial food market.

This is very encouraging to see in RSA! Gives me hope for the future of agriculture in the country. The more such farms the better!

I totally agree about the more smaller farms concept, currently I grow most of the veggies I eat on my small urban stand. So far l have successfully grown garlic, onions, leeks, green beans, peas, tomatoes, cucumbers, sweet red/green peppers, jalapenos, potatoes, sweet potatoes, lettuce, butternut, pumpkin, spinach, basil and a number of herbs. It teaches you to eat what is in season, so you benefit from a varied diet too.

Decentralization is definitely the answer. We need to break our reliance on Big Agri asap, for the sake of our planet and our health.

Extremely true. Farming became a client-to-big-agri and have lost its expertise to the point where farmers have to bring in experts about feeds and seeds and soils. Instead, regenerate by learning, observing and continuously adapting and being your own expert again.

Nice, I started my suburban back yard veggie patch in August 2021. There were also no earth worms when I started, now they are increasing. My sandy soil is still quite poor, but it is slowly improving, as I also plant more types of veggies as I gain experience in my growing skills. On top of that I started a very neglected food forest in my front yard. Had some wins and lost some too. Chickens or rabbits, big maybe right now.

Wonderful, all the best from rural România, we keep pointing out to those that visit us here on the hills that caring for a piece of this beautiful planet is the only sane, responsable, long-term solution, not shifting systems, politics..

It’s not about yield, but about profit as Gabe Brown says. 👍 We started a similar enterprise seven months ago in KZN. But we have a lot of catching up to do to your outfit, a lot to strive for.
