  • Tom’s Outdoors is based in Tumut nestled in the Snowy Valleys, enclosed by Kosciusko National Park and rural farmland. Our home in the outdoors is our lifeblood and the lifeblood of our beloved home is agriculture. The climate crisis concerns us deeply and we are passionate about the longevity of our rural country town and its neighbours.
“Changing Paradigms” explores the power of regenerative agriculture in improving the natural environment, human health, and reliable profit in sheep farming. We, as humans, have an innate attraction to the natural world. But, the way we currently interact with the environment is unsustainable and causing a disconnect with nature. We have one generation, our generation, to take action and change the paradigm.
Charles Massy (author of “Call of the Reed Warbler”) and Norm Smith both take a sustainable, systems thinking approach to sheep farming. They have moved away from industrial practices of land clearing and using chemical fertilisers and pesticides. Now they work with nature rather than against it, in turn, reviving the once over-grazed land. The power of regenerative agriculture is even greater than improving the profitability and resilience of family farms, the implications on planetary and human health are tremendously positive.
Filmed and directed by Henry Smith

Recently, I thought my depression about the world, the environment, would win the day. Then I started looking into gardening, and then into no dig gardening, and then into what is happening in regenerative farming. The hope I now feel is something I didn’t think I’d feel again. I am glad and happy that you have changed the way you think. It is not just about the money.!!! My old Grandfather told me years ago that we are custodians of the land, that's all, as it will be there long after we are gone. So if you ever purchase land , make it as fertile as you can for the next generations. Don't just have one type of animal using it and grow all different kinds produce and trees.. This is not something new, it is just more people are realizing that pesticides & herbicides are not really needed which saves them money straight off the back.. Well done, keep up the good work.

Lets all share this program to all landholders. Would be great to hear what efforts landholders are undertaking at present. We have reduced synthetic fertiliser by 30% with a phase out over 3 years replacing with guano fertiliser. Introducing protozoa, beneficial microbes (from Graeme SAIT) , adding vermicast from self managed worm farm. Adding humates with all granulers, adding fulvic acid with all liquids. Big thanks to Graeme Sait and Nicole Masters. Cover cropping with lucerne under cereals. All legumes are left alone in cereal crops. My boys learning more, never stop learning.

Bought 33 acres in Australia, 2 years ago. Always been of the organic mindset. We are certainly turning things around slowly. A couple of acres is full of fruit trees , shrubs , plants etc. our sheep and 4 cows run on the rest with out fowl. Looking forward to turning things around over the next few years.
Of note, we have started to get more thistles ( look similar to the ones you showed) our Dorper sheep absolutely love them and are expecting a large drop in thistles next season. As they eat them before seeding.

In a parallel development Cattle farming has been in used in Ethiopia and Kenya to regenerate savannah. The change from semi desert to bushy and wooded grasslands happened quite quickly with almost full recovery within five years. The planet has it all figured out already we just need to work with Ma nature not against her.

I have been using this same thinking for years now. We use what we need to for our rabbits, chickens and ducks and get them onto a new patch of natural grazing within the week.
We're seeing the results already. This lot was traditionally farmed (sprays and whatnot) before we purchased it. Now, three years on, deer come to graze our pasture. Not our neighbors to the north. Not our neighbors to the south.
One of those neighbors asked why the deer aren't afraid of us. I told him they are afraid of us but our pasture is so much better tasting and nutritious, compared to yours, that they are willing to risk it.
He laughed and said I was full of crap but still the deer graze my lot. Not his.
They spray. I don't. The deer tell me who's correct.

Something I watched years ago in Australia was the philosophy that all ‘weeds ‘ have a place in our ecosystem…weeds help collect and direct water from the highlands to the plains…back then it was not a notion well thought of, however made perfect sense to me. Nature does balance everything out and she is able to sort out any problems that occur naturally…

I love this film so inspiring. Just getting started in my pasture rotation this year with cow / poultry for regeneration of our soils. We are also buying neighboring fields that have been destroyed by chemical farming and plan to restore 🙏🏻 thank you 😊 I will share widely to help bring the change to 🌎

Fantastic, don't know why it is so hard for people to get their heads round it.It simplifies everything and makes life so much easier but you do have to put your own brain into gear and think for yourself which many people seem to have forgotten how to do. Simple things like good soil being a huge carbon sink as is wool. Holistically grazed animals emit less methane also ( include people in this group!!)

You do have to use your brain! I read once that agriculture used to be labor intensive, is now input intensive, and in the future will be planning/thinking intensive

Sadly in the past 3 years it seems most people learned NOTHING. But they will learn sooner or later. The easy way if they seek the truth and the hard way if they don't.

An apology re my previous comment, the water genius i refer to was of course Peter Andrews not Marshall. His work on natural sequence farming originally at Tarwyn Park and then at Mulloon Creek with the late Tony Coote, these are the people who should be running agriculture along with the boys featured in this great film, and not a politician among them just great minds. Regards Alan.

Had to sit through two very long ads before the video started, got not even thirty seconds in and - boom! - another lengthy ad that can't be skipped!
