James Marshall "Jimi" Hendrix (born Johnny Allen Hendrix; November 27, 1942 - September 18, 1970) was an American rock guitarist, singer, and songwriter. Although his mainstream career spanned only four years, he is widely regarded as one of the most influential electric guitarists in the history of popular music, and one of the most celebrated musicians of the 20th century. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame describes him as "arguably the greatest instrumentalist in the history of rock music".
Born in Seattle, Washington, Hendrix began playing guitar at the age of 15. In 1961, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and trained as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division; he was granted an honorable discharge the following year. Soon afterward, he moved to Clarksville, Tennessee, and began playing gigs on the Chitlin' Circuit, earning a place in the Isley Brothers' backing band and later with Little Richard, with whom he continued to work through mid-1965. He then played with Curtis Knight and the Squires before moving to England in late 1966 after being discovered by Linda Keith, who in turn interested bassist Chas Chandler of the Animals in becoming his first manager. Within months, Hendrix had earned three UK top ten hits with the Jimi Hendrix Experience: "Hey Joe", "Purple Haze", and "The Wind Cries Mary". He achieved fame in the U.S. after his performance at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, and in 1968 his third and final studio album, Electric Ladyland, reached number one in the U.S.; it was Hendrix's most commercially successful release and his first and only number one album. The world's highest-paid performer, he headlined the Woodstock Festival in 1969 and the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970 before his accidental death from barbiturate-related asphyxia on September 18, 1970, at the age of 27.
Hendrix was inspired musically by American rock and roll and electric blues. He favored overdriven amplifiers with high volume and gain, and was instrumental in utilizing the previously undesirable sounds caused by guitar amplifier feedback. He helped to popularize the use of a wah-wah pedal in mainstream rock, and was the first artist to use stereophonic phasing effects in music recordings. Holly George-Warren of Rolling Stone commented: "Hendrix pioneered the use of the instrument as an electronic sound source. Players before him had experimented with feedback and distortion, but Hendrix turned those effects and others into a controlled, fluid vocabulary every bit as personal as the blues with which he began."
Hendrix was the recipient of several music awards during his lifetime and posthumously. In 1967, readers of Melody Maker voted him the Pop Musician of the Year, and in 1968, Rolling Stone declared him the Performer of the Year. Disc and Music Echo honored him with the World Top Musician of 1969 and in 1970, Guitar Player named him the Rock Guitarist of the Year. The Jimi Hendrix Experience was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992 and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005. Rolling Stone ranked the band's three studio albums, Are You Experienced, Axis: Bold as Love, and Electric Ladyland, among the 100 greatest albums of all time, and they ranked Hendrix as the greatest guitarist and the sixth greatest artist of all time.

From a frustrated musician, Jimmy Hendrix was incredible, music so loud and enjoyable, voice imperfect that keeps you waiting, wanting to listen for more. The only bad thing I can say about Jimmy Hendrix is; that he's gone.

JIMI has so many songs that are like stars in the sky they exist due a grace from GOD and JIMI and never to be touched. It must be face he had a cool humbleness about him and an intelligence that was somewhat over shadowed by his music. What a beautiful person one who I feel like I've met before.

LOVED Hendrix, the moment I heard his Are You Experienced album. His use, of channel shifting in stereo, was a game-changer!!! He truly played guitar with passion. I will never forget the day he died. What a loss. I was listening to WNOR-FM in Norfolk, Virginia when I first heard the news bulletin. I sat in front of my stereo and played Hendrix music non-stop for days. I'm so grateful to have lived in the era of the greatest music. To witness, first hand, The Beatles, Hendrix, Zeppelin, Moody Blues, Allman Bros, Pink Floyd, and EVERY BAND that ever followed down the pike. I'm officially in that group that can say "I was there!" at the beginning. Damn! I'm getting old. But that's okay. It was worth the journey!!!!

Although "Spanish Castle Magic" was very good...it seems like Jimi spent the rest of the concert trying to tune his guitar. He seemed VERY tired. I've been playing the guitar for 43 years and I've been listening to Jimi since then as well...so I've listened to this show VERY carefully. He was so tired that he admitted that he forgot the words to "All Along The Watchtower". Then the audience became dead silent in between songs. They felt his fatigue man.
    NOOOO...
Jimi was not on Heroin. His close friends said that he did not use Heroin. They refered to him as a "Psycadelics Man". He experimented with Cocaine a little...but unfortunately he was labeled as a Heroin junky. I wish his show on January 22nd, 1969 in Vienna, Austria was videotaped!!! Jimi was phenomenal that night. Thank God that we have his "Isle of Wight" show videotaped. There is also a GENIUNE video of his performance at the Atlanta Pop Festival...but presently it's not on UA-cam. His step sister removed it to try to make money off of it. The video of the Atlanta Pop Festival that is currently on UA-cam is the soundtrack superimposed over a different concert. His fingers are not in synch with the music. I think Jimi was at his peak during the 1970's performances. Please never forget that Jimi was just a kid when you compare him to other guitarists. Also remember how advanced Jimi's approach to feedback was relative to the other guitarists at that time...
    We miss you Jimi...

    • @tomlyle4991

Yes. He seemed tired. Very tired. And yet the sound he gets is MASSIVE. I love how he could mix the feedback with the notes, knowing which key the feedback was in.
There is also the chance that at this show Jimi is stoned. For some reason while in Sweden he always seemed to partake in that devil’s weed. There are photos of him with his eyes revealing a stoner’s pleasure.
      And…
Just because a video is out of sync doesn’t mean it’s a different soundtrack. Atlanta IMO is a horrible show compared to others of the same period, July 1970. Listen to Maui HI! Incredible. But at Atlanta 70 he went on near midnight, after partying all day with the other bands on the bill. Yes, the Allman Brothers, Cactus, and so many others were also having a great time, but they played during the hot and humid day. Jimi played after that day of fun while a normal person would have had passed out by then!
