    🔴 More about this video
At $200k the Airstream Atlas is one of the most expensive RVs that we've ever reviewed. It's jam packed with every feature including an air suspension and electric jacks. It's a mighty motorhome that is more expensive than many homes. The Leisure Travel Vans Wonder is one of the least expensive class B+ offerings in the market. Priced at just over $100k as reviewed it's a full $100k cheaper than the Atlas. But having loads of features and fancy bells and whistles isn't the whole story. The more humble Wonder can't compete against the Atlas' list of fancy standard features, but it does do some things much better than the Atlas. In the end it's going to come down to the basics: which has the better lounge, galley, bedroom and bathroom.
In all those categories the Wonder beats the Atlas. Starting with the lounge, the Wonder is both brighter and more practical. No it doesn't have a sofa with electrically extending footrests and a 40 inch TV that electrically pops up out of a pedestal. But it does have two comfortable chairs with an optional fold away ottoman and an ingenious table between them that doesn't need to be set up and taken down. The TV swings up out of its pedestal both faster and with less fuss. The Wonder's lounge is less glamorous but functions better as a lounge.
The same holds true for the galley. The Atlas has a strange placement for the stove, sort of in a corner and turned sideways. It's an awkward position. There's also very little permanent count space for prep work and a smallish window behind the sink. The Wonder has a much more sensibly placed stove which sits directly in front of you when you're standing at the counter. There's permanent counter prep space and a much larger window letting loads of light in. The Wonder's galley feels more open and airy because of that window.
Moving onto the bedrooms, both the Atlas and Wonder feature a murphy bed that drops down in the lounge. The Atlas has a slide out while the Wonder doesn't. However, the bed setup in the Wonder is more simple. You literally just pull the bed down and the chairs and table automatically fold themselves under. There's not pushing a button and waiting for a couch to lower and no mattress piece to put into place. That alone makes the Wonder's bedroom design a better one.
The Atlas' bathroom is a sight to behold: a cedar closet, teak wood in the shower and shower doors with inlaid LED lighting. It's stunning. While more humble the Wonder's bathroom has a nice fit and finish. What's better is that the shower has an enormous skylight above that let's a lot of light in and also gives you more standing height in the shower. Also the shower components are recessed into the wall giving you more elbow room. I'll take more elbow and head room in my shower any day over inlaid LED lighting an teak wood.
The Wonder isn't a premium class RV like the Atlas but it holds its own against it. It's design is fresh and modern with loads of windows giving it a bright and airy feeling. Materials and colors are light giving the Wonder a sophisticated look. There's no brushed metal ceiling and cabinet trim but then again you could buy both a Wonder and a Hymer Aktiv for the price of an Atlas.

Respectfully, for me, you talk about how dark the Airstream is...granted dark cabinets and black ultra leather.....you could have shown the lighter option....but would have also been more fair to show the Airstream without all the blinds down......you had the blinds shut in all the pictures as I recall, and open in the Wonder. Bias is a word that comes to mind.

I've test driven both chassis it's no comparison the FORD by for more power better handling on a windy day the FORD will cruise 65 mph with no problem the Mercedes was struggling to reach 55 mph and felt very top heavy I'm a 28yrs experienced truck driver I know what I'm talking about, the Wonder is about 85% perfect, four things should change 1st it has the right engine but should be programmed for 250hp and 450 to 500 torque, 2nd an electric air compressor with heavy duty air suspension shocks so when it's windy at the touch of a button stiff up the suspension, 3rd 2 burner induction cook top and real oven beneath it, and 4th DIESEL GENERATOR is a must have I bet you could get all four upgrades for less than 5k and then the Wonder will be 100% perfect!

Love this, and love the Wonder. Another big plus for the Wonder, IMO, is the availability of Ford mechanics/parts vs MB. Every small town in the USA has a mechanic that can work on a Ford diesel engine. I really like the Transit as a good compromise between the beautiful Sprinter and the homely Promaster.

    • @Ultramobility
      @Ultramobility  6 років тому +1

Jennifer the Ford diesel is going to have an interesting future I think. it's going to give the sprinter a run for its money precisely for the reasons that you mention.

Fantastic review as usual. I appreciate your work and subjective opinions. The Atlas has a standard 3.2kw Onan Quiet Diesel Generator not a 2.8kw as you noted. The Wonders generator is optional and runs on LP gas hence the larger propane tank necessary for prolonged operation . The Atlas generator operates on diesel drawn from the engines fuel tank. Solar panels are standard on the Atlas, optional on the Wonder. You mention features standard on the Atlas that are not available on the Wonder. Power Stabilizer jacks, Air Ride Suspension, and other standard safety features. It would appear that Airstream checked every option box MB offered except 4WD for the Atlas. Additional items to think about, Body width is 4.5" wider on the Atlas and that's with the slide retracted. The overall height of the Wonder is taller while the interior headroom is lower in the Wonder. Floor lighting is standard on the Atlas as shown in your video however it's not rope lighting.. I'm just under 6 feet tall and didn't have any issues stretching out on the Atlas's bed while testing it. Sheets are available from AS and each unit comes with a sheet set. I did some measurements on my house king bed and believe a fitted king sheet should work in the Atlas as a fitted bottom sheet has elastic sewn into it and should take in any slack. A panel drops down at the head of the bed and pillows would rest there. I have heard that the bed can be lowered into position with the slide in. Don't know for sure as I didn't try it. The recliner sofa in the Atlas has a metal frame and is equipped with seat belts but no shoulder harness. Counter space is at a premium in any camper van and the Atlas is no exception. Possibly additional prep space could be utilized by using the counter space available when the TV is retracted. Not ideal but doable. Overall I didn't experience a closed in feeling while walking through the Atlas. The one I toured had the dark walnut cabinets so that might be worst case scenario. I tried to operate every function but the slide was out and I didn't want to retract it. Everything worked well and I found almost everything very intuitive and well placed. The rest room/shower is a palace with plenty of room in the shower. Spending any amount of money on a class B motor home or any camper for that matter is taken very seriously by me. I'm still looking!!!!

this is such a great comment thank you so much for posting! you're right I did get the generator wrong! I try to triple check but this one must have slipped by. thanks for pointing that out.

    • @richardjones990

I'm sure I'm pretty ECD about a lot of things when it comes to Class B's and B+ units. I drove about an hour and a half to just see the interior of an Atlas. I saw the exterior of a new one at a state campground in southern Ohio. A young lady owns it and I didn't want intrude by asking to see the interior. I was very impressed with it by just viewing the exterior. As far as the generator goes, it's a big deal for me to have it operate on the same fuel as the engine runs on. I currently use a Honda generator to power my TT when I'm on the road. It's just something else I have to deal with.

Interesting video. I've been watching Wonder videos for a while. They certainly offer some clever engineering features to gain flexibility in a small space and they appear to be of good quality. While like you, I'm not a big fan of slides, I would have preferred to see a comparison of their murphy bed model built on the Sprinter chassis with the slide. It would have been a more comparable comparison, and the Wonder would probably offer similar equipment to the Atlas in this model, while still being significantly cheaper. This configuration also allows for a walk around bed. Love the exterior styling of the Atlas, clean and classy. The interior of the Atlas while having high end finishes and materials just doesn't seem to justify the price. There seems to be a big size gap when going from a B Plus to a C. Wondering why there isn't anything in the 28 to 30 FT range. I think these chassis are pretty much maxed out at 24 considering their power output and load carrying capacity, but it would seem there are other options out there.

Great comparison. Caught my attention with the Wonder as I like the floor plan. I have zeroed in on the Winnebago View 24d (Murphy bed). Sprinter based small class-C, but very similar in size to the Atlas (seems like a fine line in calling one a class-B vs. class-C). Would love to see you review the View 24D as I value your insights.

Thank you so much Neil. I can't tell you how much I needed to see this. My wife and I have been RV shopping for a long time. And we discovered that our ideal RV is not available in North America.⒈
As a result of our not being able to find our ideal RV, we have had to reconsider _everything,_ and decided to downgrade to a 23-25 ft Class C ─ just so that we have the ability to make a quick run to the store, go sight-seeing in a new city, and especially to a hospital, if necessary. My wife and I are not in the best of health, and it has always been her dream to travel around and see the US in an RV. And I will do whatever it takes to make that dream come true.
    *_Anyway_* . . . I apologize for my verbosity. It's so easy when you're using talk-to-text.
So, we decided to look for a small Class C. This limits our ability to boondock like we prefer. And as full-timers that's a real disappointment. I was even hoping to add extra water tanks, solar and lithium battery bank ( and in the case of the two you show here, I'm hoping that is still an aftermarket possibility). Sadly, I found I have to do more research on weight allocations. I'm in the dark when it comes to that.
It is just the two of us, and (as I may have mentioned in another comment section) we are not fans of how _every_ manufacturer seems to want to sleep 400 people in every unit, which takes up valuable space. We liked what we saw in the smaller *Thor Siesta* and *Gemini.* The skylight, instead of an upper bunk, is a nice bonus.
Because we've only recently widened our search to include Class B+ vehicles, we were made aware of the *Airstream Atlas* and *Interstate* only just last night. And I was _soooo_ happy. The quality of Mercedes, and we both have always loved Airstreams. And I must admit, when I saw some of the videos directly from Airstream and Mercedes-Benz, the marketing got to me a bit. I might've walked right out and purchased one right then and there ─ _but then you came along._
The price savings alone, would make up for any lack of quality, purchasing options, or aftermarket remodeling we may want to do. *Thank you for this video.* I'm going to continue looking at smaller Class C's as well as more B+ units. Your information has been invaluable. I mentioned to you before, that even though I was looking at the larger units, your videos on tips and things to watch out for I've been so helpful.

I've seen a few times where B+ coaches use a pop-up or hideaway TV. It sounds great to repurpose the space when you are not watching TV. I can foresee a problem I would have. Like any horizontal surface you have in a limited space, you WILL use it to "put stuff on". Once that stuff is put, you are going to have to move it all to watch TV. Maybe others would be more disciplined but I have a knack for spreading out to consume all the available real estate.

Got rid of our motorhome, flew, rented a car, nice Airbnb apartment for 14 bucks per day. Just questioning the motorhome concept. Even state parks want over 30 bucks a night, use to be nice at a buck per night.
Can get a flat tire in a motorhome on a holiday weekend when all tire dealers are closed, gone are the days with full service gas stations, but a wonderful place to buy beer.
Better check the weather, frost tonight, better get out there and drain and blow all the lines. Even your gray and black tanks can freeze up.

  • @robertmills2900

I completely agree. The odd bed size and awkward galley of the Atlas was a killer for me, as well as the price. I'm 6'2". A 73" square bed was a no go. I thought the Wonder would be helped with a diesel generator to preserve propane for hot water, refrigerator and the furnace.
Also, in spite of similar HP and torque ratings, the Wonder is only rated for 3000 lbs. towing while the Atlas is rated for 5000 lbs. Transmission upgrade for the Wonder perhaps?
I would want to tow my Wrangler with an inflatable pontoon fishing raft in the back which could top out at around 4000 lbs. I'm sold on the Wonder except for this one issue.
I currently own 33' class A, but the thought of downsizing is very appealing. I know there are other class B's that would fit my criteria, but I have only seen the ones with a wet-bath, sit down closet. Stand up shower only! And I love the Murphy bed design.
(Airstreams are overpriced. They're beautiful and well built, but you're overpaying for the name)

I'll take the Wonder over the Atlas! We've owned an RV with an odd size bed~ it's a PAIN! A cramped bathroom/shower~it's NOT Worth it! Don't even get me started on an unorganized galley~ugh! Makes cooking impossible not to mention storage issues!! Thank you for the comparison! Loved it!

  • @jtlong8383

What about comparison of outside storage, cockpit amenities? Failed to note that Wonder is a side sleeper bed, requiring a climb over, where Atlas is a walk-around bed. Still, quite a $$ difference.

You need to check your math. To say one is $100K more than the other when you don't add in the non-standard cost of options on the Wondre is misleading. This is our first look at this size vehicle, and you sold us on the Airstream! Thanks.

Thanks Neil, another great review. I totally agree with your assessment. It is so hard to compare all the different models. It usually boils down to a hybrid (features from more than one model!). Thankfully, we have options and people like you who enjoy comparing those options! Safe travels.....

I for one have had two Airstream travel trailers. I found the the workmanship to be very poor. Example 1 The shower plumbing underneath the shower was never glued up from the factory, consequently it of course leaked. Example 2 The shroud holding the shower fan had only two screws holding it in place. Even though there were 3 screws; one of the screws held nothing, it was held in place by some silicone caulk. Shall I go on. I will never own a Thor product again. The question is, "would you want to work on your travel trailer or enjoy your travel trailer" My wife and I just ordered a new Leisure Travel Van Unity murphy bed. We aren't looking back ever.

I had a chance to test drive both chassis in perfect weather conditions high winds and the FORD by for is the best way to go acceleration, torque, but was blown away by the handling at cruising speed the Mercedes handled ok in high winds if your going to stay around 45mph, cruising 65mph in the FORD it just kept asking for more I had to set the cruise, the FORD just makes more since all the way around with a few minor changes I'm sold on the WONDER they are going to sale a lot of those RVs!

The LTV Unity Murphy would have been a better comparison to the Airstream since they are essentially identical and both based on the MB Sprinter chassis. It would be interesting to see a 3-way comparison between them all though since I'm torn between the Unity and the Wonder. Both have their pros and cons. The Wonder has fewer options available and you are stuck with that interior as far as the cabinet wood and countertops.

BTW, am I the only person who noticed Dean crushing his glasses and cell phone here ua-cam.com/video/P6uZDedAG7s/v-deo.html , when he lowered the Murphy bed...or maybe there is enough room on the table to not have stuff on there get smashed?

I have "plans" to retire in a couple of years and get the motor home I have dreamed of for too many years. I had been completely stuck on the Leisure Travel Van Unity Twin Bed Or Island Bed, but now i think i can seriously consider the Wonder. I'll be looking for an island bed model of the Wonder. You may have already compared them, and I expect the Unity will win out, but the Wonder sure is looking better and better. I looked at a Wonder a few years ago in St. Louis at Van City RV (nice people), and have to say the layout on that 2014 was pretty nice. I'll be looking for used 2018 twin bed in a couple of years so people, please buy them so i can get a nice used one. Thank you. :)

I believe that the 100k price difference is overstated. Once you add options to the Wonder to make it comparable to the standard Atlas features your price is much closer. My husband and I have researched the B+ market for a while and have ordered a new Atlas, we felt it was the best option.
