Once upon a time, Redd sat in on a show I was hired to play on in Austin. Redd, a drummer, my Bass, and 12 Pedal Steel Players; each one taking a solo after the other going 'round robin. It was a surreal experience and one of the musical highlights of my life. The musicianship in the place was absolutely staggering.
It was so great to get to hang out and play with Redd when we were shooting this video. You are so right - we could have spent all day with him and it still would not have felt long enough. He’s so great!
Redd is genuinely one of my favorite people in the world of guitar. As you said, he is such a cool, genuinely kind person, not to mention a monster guitarist. Thanks for watching!
I’m honestly not sure! I know he does Skype lessons, but Redd is pretty active on social media, and he’s pretty responsive to emails. I say give it a shot! His email address for lessons and such is on his website.
So humble. Worth more salt than ALL other cocky arrogant guitar players totally combined that think they're King 👑 shit!! Love ya Redd!! Keep up the great work brother 👍!!!
Thank you! My philosophy with these interviews is that guys like Redd are the ones with the answers. It’s better to shut up and learn something instead of trying to insert myself or my opinion for the sake of just being heard.
I agree totally. I've just posted similar comments on other videos from Cody. It's great listening to people with something important to say without interruption.
Everyone wanting to do an interview needs to watch this, evidently Cody Jung researched enough to ask the right questions and knows we all want to hear Redd and he stays out of the way. I am so pleased Redd is just as great a person as he is a guitarist, I am always happy one of the people whose work I admire is also the kind of person I want to be around.
Wow, thank you so much! Also, I agree with everything you said about Redd. He is not only one of the greatest guitar players out there, but he is genuinely a good dude. He makes you feel right at home the moment you walk through the door, and he’s a blast to hang out with. He’ll have you laughing your butt off the entire time.
Super interview. Redd is about the most humble guy and easily one of the best ever. Love the Don Kelly stories. Alberto Lee and others come to see Redd cuz he's a brilliant player and they know they will hear different sounds coming from a tele. Much like Gatton. Hes truly one of a kind and a treasure.
Thank you so much, both for watching and for the compliment! I think you are spot on with the reason why so many people love listening to Redd play -- he's one of the most creative guitar players around. One day I'm going to compile a bit more of the footage of us just sitting around playing and put it on here. Not because anyone needs to listen to me, but rather because almost all of the stuff that he played while just casually jamming was so fantastic!
I was lucky enough to get up and jam with Redd in Alberta Canada...I sang Old Chuck of Cool and Ray Prices Different Kind of Flower. Redd loved the song choices and played the hell out of them....great memory for me.
I’m hoping he was using hyperbole when he said his that. I think he was saying he’d rather work relatively cheap than not have a gig at all. I’m nowhere near his level and I wouldn’t haul my gear to a gig and play for $40 unless there were other benefits. He’s got more energy than me!
I am so impressed by Redd, not only as a player, but as a person. I just stumbled onto him on UA-cam a couple days ago. This is a really honest and revealing interview. My hat's off to the interviewer - he never interrupted Redd.
Thanks so much, Kevin! And you were right on the money about Redd, he's not only a fantastic guitarist, but a wonderful person. You could not have stumbled on to a better person. It was so great to get to sit down with him and talk back in October when we filmed this, and I'm happy to say we will be getting back together in a few months for a guitar clinic and concert along with Brent Mason and Johnny Hiland. It's going to be an absolute blast!
That was too cool!!! We live in NY and I was at some point going to get to Texes to ses Redd play. Now I only have to hop 81 and head south. Life is good. Thanks for doing this. It made my day.
Thank you for commenting, that made my day! Haha. This interview was so fun to do, and getting hang out with him at his place surrounded by so much music memorabilia and guitar gear was unreal. If you get the chance, go see him live for sure!!
Thank you so much! Also, if you're interested in talking to and learning from Redd, I believe he is still doing lessons over Zoom right now. If you're interested, you should check out his Facebook page for how to contact him. He's an incredibly awesome person to talk to, not to mention the fact that he's just a wealth of knowledge.
He’s a genuinely humble, kind person. I’m so glad that comes through in this video we did. Also, he’s absolutely hilarious! Thanks so much for watching!
Definitely. I want to get better at shooting b-roll footage for these videos because the room we were in was filled with awesome memorabilia from previous tours, amazing vintage guitars, and not to mention a Grammy sitting around. Redd was such a fun and easy person to talk to that he almost makes you forget that you're sitting with a legend, which I think is a real testament to the type of guy he is.
Great job interviewing and boy did I enjoy Redd here. I'm a new fan as I just recently became aware, through UA-cam, of Redd. I even more recently became aware that he is a very capable singer of country tunes!
Thank you! And I’m very glad Redd has another fan. He’s one of my favorites as well. Setting aside his awesome guitar chops and great singing, but he’s basically a walking encyclopedia of songs and guitar history!
Redd really is a fantastic guy! I know he's from somewhere around Vancouver, but I cannot say I'm terribly familiar with that part of Canada. Thanks for watching!
Took a zoom lesson from Redd during a Covid lockdown. Was worth the money just to be able to say I talked to him for thirty minutes. Genuinely nice guy!
That’s so great! I would recommend that anyone who is a fan/guitarist should do this - learning from someone like Redd is invaluable. Just having that chance to ask him questions, even if they aren’t “can you show me a lick” type questions, is so helpful. Also, you’re 100% right. Redd is the most genuinely nice guy you’ll ever meet.
I have always loved Merle Haggard, great Haggard stories. Great interview. I hate that more people haven't viewed this. You could never get an interview by a letterman or whoever on t.v. of this quality.
You went through them all today! Haha. I really appreciate all of the kind words. I’ll never pretend to understand why some videos get more attention on UA-cam, but I can tell you that I had an absolute blast with Redd (and supreme respect for him), and we have some stuff coming up in a few months that I cannot wait to announce!
@@CodyJungGuitar awesome I'm subscribed so I will see it and share your stuff with people interested. Great interview though man, I can't stress it enough.
Awesome! Thank you so much for watching! Redd is definitely a great person, and it’s wild that he has so many fans from all around the world. No one more deserving of the success!
Definitely. I’m sure you’ve already seen this, but just in case you haven’t - you should check out Redd’s recent live streams from Floyd’s. They’re uploaded to UA-cam in their entirety, so it’s full performances. Pretty awesome stuff!
Thank you for watching and saying that! I’m really happy people are enjoying Redd’s video. He is such a fantastic guy (not to mention legendary guitarist!).
Thank you! And you're absolutely right -- Redd is a fantastic guy. Not only was he very generous with his time for this interview, but he's just a genuinely nice person who is willing to share his vast guitar knowledge with anyone who asks. I cannot say enough good things about him. Truly a legend!
@@CodyJungGuitar you betcha! About a decade or more ago, i was playing a club in Holland and Dale Watson showed up with Redd and Chuck Meade...they joined us onstage and Redd played my crappy guitar thru my crappy amp and it sounded absolutely incredible! That’s such an awesome story. That must have been an incredibly fun night! Also, thank you so much for subscribing! I cannot say too much just yet, but we finally have new interviews lined up with the first set coming very soon!
Redd was a wonderful person to interview for this reason - he has so much experience and so many stories! It was so great to get to talk to him (and do a lot of listening!). Haha. Thanks so much for watching!
@@CodyJungGuitar I’m thoroughly enjoying your interviews Cody! Watched Brent, Redd and Johnny in the last few hours. It’s great to get the business side of it as so many interviews with great players are ‘what pick and strings do you use?’ Or ‘can you show us a lick that none of us will actually learn or apply to the specific ludicrous chord sequence you just showed?’
Thanks so much for saying this! Yeah, I really try to bring something different to the table with these interviews, and I really glad people seem to be enjoying them because of that. I might have mentioned this in another comment already, but we are FINALLY scheduling more interviews. The first one should be up in July. We have a few lined up for certain with more to come!
@@CodyJungGuitar amazing! Keep doing great things! There’s nothing wrong with the other interview style, it’s just been done 200 times before haha. This guy is a guitar god in the body of an auto mechanic. Totally relatable and a joy to listen to. Cool guy.

Musicians like him are treasures. Never runs out of licks and unique chordings on top of being a cool down to earth person.

Thanks Cody and Redd, awesome info! Redd Volkaert is an amazing talent!
The most real discussion about life as a guitarist I've ever heard...and from a living legend no less.
