We opened for Marty and the band in 2013 outside of Atlanta. I was playing a ‘54 strat and Kenny walked right up to me and asked to play it. One of the coolest moments of my life 😎😎

I was at Merlefest about 15 years ago and Marty Stuart was the Featured Artist on Saturday night. I was going to head over to the auditorium early so I could get a good seat for the Midnight Jam. Before I could leave Marty came on stage and there was Cousin Kenny just tearing it up. I've never seen anything like him. I was like "who the F is this guy? Where did he come from?" It was Kenny Vaughan. Marty introduced him by saying, "and here's Kenny Vaughan in his new cowboy suit!" Kenny's picking was flashier than his suit. I LOVE his playing, and he's such a great interview. I've watched this one all the way through 3 times now. If I could play like anyone, it would be Kenny Vaughan.

He's a guitar store owner's best friend. Saw him play live with a guitar, a tiny amp, and one cable, he blew the doors off the place. The crowd was excited, happy, and loved it. It made me start playing the guitar the next day. I'm sure he's done that same thing to hundreds of other people.

Kenny so on point with that B-bender, I watched the Yardbirds on Shindig because of what Kenny was saying and realized I had seen it way back when I was a 10 year old, Beck was so incredible doing some of those things that Jimi would later popularize. Kenny Vaughn has been blessed in so many ways and it's great hearing your story, first in playing with some of the greatest artists in popular music and also for a career I could only dream of. I asked my father for a guitar that night the Beatles appeared on Ed Sullivan, but as I was only 7 or so I would have to wait at least for a few more years. I was then was sent for accordion lessons, they were fun but they weren't a Gretsch. Looking back after all these years, instead of following my dreams I did the safe thing. I went to school and had a career of sorts doing things I really couldn't care less about. I've always done music though, both playing and writing because I find joy in it, sometimes by playing in bands and sometimes not. I'm retired now and still play, and I've gone through some Fenders, a couple of Gibsons and a Yamaha or two but funny enough, I never ever owned a Gretsch and maybe, just maybe, that's where it all went wrong!

I started learning guitar when I bought the Ventures "Walk Don't Run" Album in '63. I was 12. My Dad did what you said you did, he took the safe route and worked a job he hated for 20 years. I followed my dream because I couldn't NOT do it, ya know. I made my living playing Music for most of 55 years. With various Bands I opened for The Allman Bros., Ricky Nelson, The Judds, Ronnie Milsap, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Maria Muldaur, and I played with John McEuen and Jimmy Ibottson of the Dirt Band, sang with Rodney Crowell, worked with and met a whole bunch more. I've written & recorded 38 Albums on which I play every instrument, but that's all over now, and here I am at 72 and looking back at it all, I have as many regrets as anybody. I guess I'm just sharing that with you because your story saddened me and made me think of my Dad.
We all do whatever we do in our lives and look for some "Happiness" along the way.
Everything I just told you about did NOT make me happy. I'm trying to encourage you to do what you love NOW. If playing and writing makes you happy... Do it! I don't play out much any more, but I write and record all the time, and that makes me happy. I've got Music that no one will ever hear, but I keep writing it. I hope you get my meaning here.
You said, "Maybe, that's where it all went wrong." But maybe, just maybe, it went just how it was supposed to.

i dont even PLAY guitar, but its so interesting to listen to ANY artist talk about their craft,a writer, a painter, a musician, you cant help but pick up the passion, the IDEA of it,how deep inside it they ARE,we learn whats INVOLVED in being good at it, and kenny is not just a superior, fantastic musician, but a generally nice person, and able to articulate it . we are ALL tired, im sure, of self centered people only aiming for fame and stardom, this guy is an artist living for the craft, and im so glad he is being rewarded for it in accolades AND monetarily ( i HOPE! )

I’m playing a gig in a motel lounge the Friday night before I was to go setup and run sound for a festival. I wasn’t all that familiar with Marty Stuart and the Fabulous Superlatives. There was a guy sitting and watching us play all night. The next day as I was wiring up the console at FOH and the guy that was in the lounge comes up to me and asks if we are going to be playing again that Saturday night down at the lounge. I said no and we talked for a while and then later that day when the festival headliner ( Marty Stuart) came on, there was that guy from the lounge ripping it up in Marty’s band. I became a Kenny Vaughan fan immediately. Hey Zac, I understand your first lounge gig was at the Holiday Inn in Rawlins WY. I was probably eating in the restaurant while you were playing there.

I did an interview every week - from James Cotton to Mick Jones - interviews are super tough (I did my own editing, and they’re still super tough to get a good one!) I'm about the same age as Kenny, so I can relate to his stories. He seems like a regular, down to earth, non-egomaniacal, musician, and great guitar player. There are so many great guitar players now, but not many of them are compelling to me on a musical level, often their fretboard pyrotechnics become boring. Kenny is a musician, who keeps it musical and fun, the kind of music I love. Thanks for featuring Mr. Kenny Vaughan (with a last name like that, you'd better be good...probably hears that all the time). Cheers!!

Love the James Burton story! Got to play a couple of songs with him sitting in at an industry event in Nashville and same thing happened...other guitar player besides me, Mike Aquino, is a monster, and James walked onstage with his signature tele, two cables, a Boss digital delay, plugged into a SIR backline Bassman reissue (which he dimed) and then played a solo that blew our minds, including one lick that was from freaking outerspace that he had certainly never played before on any recordings and that made me and Mike drop our jaws and pretty much stop playing mid-song and stare at each other and just laugh.

That was just terrific. I first met Kenny in Denver, Colorado when my punk rock band from Laramie played with his rockabilly band The Jonny III and the Suicide Commandos from Minneapolis (in '77?). Kenny really was the first guy I saw playing an "old guitar" on purpose and I had never seen anybody keep a Stratocaster in tune like he could. Loved all gear stuff and thanks Kenny for showing us your Burton lick! Thank you Zak.

Played bass with Kenny Vaughn with a Country Artist named George Ducas around Nashville in the early 90's...one gig at The Sutler, we were supposed to go on at 8pm...Kenny never called, and just showed up at nearly 10...said he was doing a session, and well...some things apparently just cannot be rushed...and Kenny Vaughn is one of those things...always worth the wait...

KV is such a cool and downright humble dude. Just totally laid back and genuine. Definitely left his ego at the door. I could listen to him talk just about his session player experiences for hours. I've long enjoyed his work with Marty and the other Superlatives. I only wish I had 1/1000 of his guitar playing skills! This one was a treasure. Keep up the great work, Zac.

was first introduced to Kenny Vaughan's musicianship at Lucinda Williams "secret" show at Antone's (in Austin) right when Carwheels was released. Although Lucinda was great, I believe everyone in the room left thinking that Kenny Vaughan was the greatest guitarist in the world (a reasonable assertion still). And what a great interview! Really enjoyed this.

What an awesome interview, Kenny is so unassuming and obviously a fan of great players, and doesn't seem to realize he's one of the greats! I was lucky enough to meet him at a show he played with Marty in a native casino in California. They were signing autographs after the show, I was of course honored to meet Marty, but the highlight for me was getting to talk to Kenny for a minute as he signed stuff. It's so awesome when you meet a player you've always looked up to and you find out they really are the nice person you hoped they would be. Thumbs up to Zac too for another great interview, easily one of my favorite people to listen to, great knowledge, and just fun for me!

When living in New York my cousin who also lived there took me to a now defunct bar called 9C and it was bluegrass night and Kenny happened to be sitting in and man did he blow my mind! He was ripping chicken pickin’ and blazing 16th note picking runs, I had not heard of him prior but that night he was unreal and one of the best players I have ever seen or heard, total monster!

Zac is the best interviewer around. He knows all the inside stuff and his questions take the conversation to all the right places. Kenny Vaughn and Marty Stuart are my favorite country guitar players. Bill Frisell my favorite jazz guitarist. Tom Petty and Mike Campbell rank high on my all time list. James Burton one of my favorite OG guitar players. All these and more were discussed in the interview so I could not have asked for more. 👍🏻

Kenny is definitely a product of-- what I can gather from this great interview--his parents. He described them as true intellectuals passing as hillbillies to fit in. I loved that description as it gives the fan a window into who KV is and what made him the personable & talented sweetheart he is.
I mean everyone who auditioned him or even just briefly played with him --ended up taking him on tour! 🤩 If you've never seen Marty & the Superlatives...
    check them out ASAP😂
