    Keeping the engine stock and without a tune is what has kept that truck going. From years working in a shop I see it all the time where guys buy a truck and put a big race tune on it and blow up the transmission or blow head gaskets or worse.

    • @bryanglenn123
      @bryanglenn123 5 років тому +9

      I agree! Keep it stock! GM did well with that design!

    • @jaredanthony8070
      @jaredanthony8070 5 років тому +24

      You answered your own question as to why you see them blown up. "Race tune" stock trucks can be great. A truck with an intake exhaust and small tune can make them have even better longevity than stock. With egr's dpf and def systems it can become more problematic faster and far more expensive to fix. To delete it it will get better milage and have less under hood heat as well as longevity not breathing it's own shit. Yes a race tune on a stock truck is asking for breaking things. But a decent tune on a truck with a couple mods and possibly a trans rebuild with a few upgrades like a 6 speed conversion from someone like duramax tuner. The 5 speeds on occasion would burn up clutches but built they are fine. The lly also would occasionally overheat too under certain conditions even bone stock. It was rare though. The lbz (06-07)was basically flawless other than minor interior issues like this had and the lmm(07.5-10) had some interior issues but very minor and shared engine architecture with the lbz. Lbz's will crack pistons with big tunes but stock or "tastefully" tuned and modified they are great. Saying tuning is bad basically is a huge misconception because of those diesel douchebags who crank it to tune 11 and blow them up 4 times before moving on saying all diesels are trash

      @@jaredanthony8070 I'd put money on a stock setup lasting much longer (engine and trans) than even a mild tune and supporting mods. You can change shift points for towing but then you deal with higher trans fluid temps (unless it's manual of course) and if you put a tune on the engine all you are doing is dumping more fuel causing higher egt's and putting extra stress on the stock turbo. It's a rabbit hole... I care for fleet vehicles mostly and some of the trucks see heavy abuse. We tried the tuner thing with a few vehicles (per customer request) trying to get better fuel economy/ better towing ability and it ended up costing them more money in the long run. If you plan on trading in evey 2 years then sure! but adding a tune, exhaust and intake to a truck that already has 200k miles is just asking for trouble

    • @jaredanthony8070
      @jaredanthony8070 5 років тому +7

      @@jamessweeten6926 it's not just dumping more fuel in. It's small amounts across the map to make it run more powerfully efficient. It changes injector timing to burn better at a higher compression moment. You remove restrictions from the exhaust and free up the exhaust flow letting the turbo breathe easier reducing drive pressure. You put an intake on reducing egts. At the same time full delete the truck removing what emissions equipment it has further reducing egts. Less restrictions in and out mean better flow and cooler air. You work on fleet trucks. Trucks that are beat to shit every day by someone who has zero investment in it. It doesn't matter what you or the company does to them they still will be floored up every hill getting that trailer to where it needs to be no matter what those gauges say. Trans could be welding its clutches together and they would just push the pedal harder. Mild tunes with proper modifications will improve milage and longevity in a personal vehicle. Emissions equipment especially kills vehicles faster than anything when properly maintained and used by normal people. A full delete and "stock" tunes will be a safe bet for longevity. Stock from the factory trucks are only tuned to run the cleanest emissions they can. It may include a huge lean curve in fuel maps which could become an issue. It could run them at a high temperature to help burn more carbon dioxide per cf of air. They don't necessarily tune them for longevity. There is a 1 million mile lml duramax fully deleted that went around recently. It is bone stock other than the delete and supportive mods and the few things that failed along the way like alternators. Its not just stock but what it rolled out of the factory with. New engines are becoming more reliable and if it wasnt for the emission equipment which engineers themselves say is what will be the death of those engines they could last for as long as they are maintained really.

      LLY were known for HG even on stock trucks. GM dropped the ball and added a EGR cooler without upgrading the rest of the cooling system and put a shitty turbo mouth piece on them. Remove the EGR cooler and swap out the mouth piece and you're usually good to go. There are of course exceptions...usually people who don't tow or don't tow heavily. That's why HG issues are mostly on 04.5-05 trucks. 06 LLYs had the upgraded cooling that the LBZ got.

    Trust me when I say this Taylor. Fix EVERYTHING that it needs & maintain the shit out of it. These are one of the best generations of Duramax. I owned an LLY & it was the best purchase I've ever made. Bought a crew cab short bed SLT brand new & within 200 miles I did a 4" lift - 18x12 wheels - 35" Toyo M/T's - deleted, chipped & tuned + 5" turbo back exhaust & put over 150,000 miles on it. Most comfortable/reliable tow rig I've ever owned. I'd trade in my LP5 for a brand new LLY in a heartbeat.

    I have a 06 LBZ with 290k miles that I bought 7 years ago. I have the same issue with the blend door. Overall it has been an excellent truck, I've ever only had to replace wear items, starter and alternator. First upgrades I would recommend would be Airdog, switching out the factory fuel filter with a CAT 2 micron filter and a centrifugal oil filter. Enjoy it.

    I bought a 6.0 powerstroke for a tow rig. I bought it with 93k miles. It’s a zf6 truck. I was in the same boat. I had to have a heavy duty pickup. I work on cars for a living, so I wasn’t scared of any work I had to do. That being said, I knew that the truck was going to have to be studded. I also knew that no matter what I bought, it would need the egr deleted. The only other major problem with the 6.0 I was worried about was the oil cooler. I now have the headstuds, gaskets, and upgraded oil cooler sitting here waiting to be installed. But I’m not doing it until something fails. I’m very happy with it. I’m glad I bought it instead of the dmax mainly because of how much power it has and how much easier it is to work on

We just towed a 6500lb 89 Chevy loaded with toolboxes and tools and it handled like a champ. But don't think for a second we didn't have a backup vehicle. They want insane money at the dealer to change the injectors, recall or not, and he's not even sure if that's the problem. Either he's going to run it til it dies or trade it in.

    Lly- headgaskets, can’t run a decent tune because of the weak trans, electronic problems, limp mode, etc
    Cummins- trans. Is not the greatest if it’s auto, cylinder 6 is prone to problems in 3rd gens.

Cab is quiet and ride is better. 99-03 7.3l trucks ride great and are quiet. Chevy is just a soft 3/4ton for light work. My 03 7.3l truck is comfy and rides decent. Like you, instead of buying a specific truck based on what the Ram owners, Ford owners, or GM owners said (they're all biased). I picked one based on research and what applied to me best. I picked a 60K mile 2007 Silverado Classic with a LBZ and have zero regrets. I wanted something the size of a half ton, with the drivetrain of a one ton, and the capability between the two groups. My first choice is a cummins 12v, but like you said the trucks they're in are old, clunky, and uncomfortable. For that the Duramax LBZ was my second choice, and came with the allison 6 speed. It just made the most sense for what I paid.

    So My 2 cents on this best truck topic. Dodge makes the best trucks for the reason being stock or mods that help reliability (delete free flowing exaust ect) The dodge has lasted the longest. Worked at a service, repair center had a guy who had an 07 cummins with 300k and going. only a delete and a 4 inch back. No crazy tune making 600 hp. Trans lasted 235k miles being driven every single day and towing a 16k pound 32 foot trailer. Trailer wasn't towed everyday but very frequently. Ive seen all sorts of Diesel trucks from stock to race tuned trucks. Seen more GMs broken and having problems. Huge Problem with GMs are when they break they get super pricey. my 2 cents
