I've had one of these for about a year now, easiest system I've used. Noticed a couple of things while you were testing it: 1. I learned to alternate the side of the blade between strokes. It will heat the blade somewhat so alternating it will keep the heat evenly along the knife. 2. the inch per second is easy enough- 7" blade should take 7 seconds per pass 3. Be careful with the roller guide. It can actually cause the edge to "burr" more if you put too much pressure on it as you pull the knife thru. 4. Replacement belts are sold as a kit. I've found them for under $20 at my local bigbox fishing store 5. Follow the grit sizes, don't jump from Medium to the Polishing one. You want to make sure the knife blade is even and ground correctly all along the blade. You can damage a belt this way. Just a few tips I've leaned using it. Have fun and enjoy! PS I this comment happens to win. Find a Local Military Veteran and gift it to them with my thanks for their service!!!!
Been avoiding this system for a long while due to comments about how easy it is to mess up a knife. Finally gave in and couldn't be happier puts an edge on a knife in minutes that would normally take me hours. Incredible sharpener.
I bought one of these and my knives were so bad,but after I used this my knives were razors again. I was so sick n tired of whetstones and Norton's too,the lansky as well, but this sharpner worked awesome for me. Thank you!!!
I purchased one of these from Cabela's about 2 years ago and have never looked back. I'm seriously happy with how this unit sharpens all my knives. You can also get the replacement belts from fleaBay for a fraction of the price from Cabela's...... I've used this unit thousands of times as I'm hard as hell on my Gerber pocket knife (cutting wires, belts, hoses, prying etc etc) and this little gem brings my knife back to perfect every time.
I've had the older base model that cost me around 75 for many years and it's still going. Had a an issue with one of the rollers breaking and company sent me a new one free of charge.
That "other accessory" that Cody mentioned is the optional tool sharpener for larger blades, axes, even lawnmower blades. This is a very cool and effective little machine. Thanks for sharing ! (RTFM, Cody :-)
I've had this sharpener for about a year, and it's been wonderful. I thought I lost it when I brought it down to my family to sharpen their knives and was willing to buy another one. Lucky I found it. 10/10 would buy again.
There's no risk. Cutco has a lifetime sharpness guaranty. If... Let's do be honest here... When any Cutco knife dulls, you can return it to the factory to have it professionally resharpened to factory specs. Or at least they did 30 yrs ago when I was selling them... Or trying to. They were helaciously expensive back then and I doubt they've gotten any less so.
Still have the forever sharpness guarantee. My grandfather got a few in the 50s and my grandmother still has them... and sent a coupe of them back a couple years ago and got brand new ones because some were pretty bad off
@Anuel Jackson I'm well aware that the straight edge models of their knives can be hand sharpened by anyone who knows what they're doing. That wasnt the point. The point was, there's no risk of "ruining" a knife which carries a lifetime warranty. Furthermore, I wonder how well the sharpener would sharpen one of the knives with Cutco's proprietarily shaped, serrated "Double D" edged knives.
Hey! I didnt know this either when I got mine but you're supposed to start on the right side first! And then the left. Because of the direction of belt travel using the left side last takes the burr off!
Normally I a product test video doesn't make me stop in my tracks but this one did simply because it addressed a problem I have had for years. I have been searching for a knife sharpener that gets me a razor sharp edge, with no fuss and a minimum setup. I have tried everything and nothing gave me any satisfaction. Either a sharpener was too expensive, too difficult to get up easily or just didn't result in a devilishly sharp edge. Then I saw this and it checked all the boxes. It was easy. Setup was no hassle and the results were exactly what I have wanted for years but could not get. So I ordered one right away. I didn't regret it. I got it last night and within just a few minutes of unboxing I had two EDC knives sharpened to a wicked edge with zero hassle. I've been telling every co-worker who will listen about it today and showing them the edge on my knife. Thanks for this. Not many products are life changing but this one ranks right up there on top.
I love mine, I get through all the kitchen knives in around 45 minutes going through all the belts, the edge holds up well, setup and clean up is quick. Good results and easy process means this tool will get used rather than considered a bother. I’d suggest picking up a lower grit belt to make putting that initial shape on the edge faster and more economically than blowing through the 120, I believe I grabbed a 80 grit that fits.
I'm getting this sharpener. I have been using DMT diamond stone and a Spyderco ceramic stone but it's a pain. Looking forward to sharpening all my knives with this system. Thanks for the review!
I've wondered how well this sharpener works for sharpening knives. Thanks for sharing. I just priced the model you tested. You should really appreciate the guy who sent it to you because it runs 120 bucks.
With the original one, I would take of the guard, rotate the triangle forward, as use it as a portable belt sander. Great for sharpening shovels, hula hoes; and shaping wood.
I've been using this (Ken Onion edition) for a little over 3 years now & absolutely love it. Everything from my utility & shear blades, S35VN EDC's (typically difficult to sharpen), to my Shun kitchen knives get amazing edges on them from this thing. I love the 22.5° setting on it for EDC blades. I will say with the very hard steel of my Shun knives I do get a better edge using stones because of how flat the angle is but that obviously takes a MUCH greater amount of time (and the skill needed). The belts for this make light work of repairing damaged edges as well.
I don't have this Work Sharp System. The one I do have is incredible. I'm deeply impressed by their products. Thank you for making want to purchase one of these when I can. Love love their products.
Be careful to not let the blade set for a second when you start your stroke as you will end up with a divot where you let the blade rest. Also, DO NOT pull the blade all the way through the belt! Stop when the tip is halfway across the belt so you don't mess up the tip of the blade.
I agree 💯! It helps to read the manual... Or if you don't like to read the manual, check out their instructional videos on UA-cam!... You will get even a better edge and be even more impressed!!! I know you love axes... This is the perfect tool to get shaving sharp (convex) edges on axes as well!!! Thanks for another great video! 🤝🖐️👍
I didn’t read the instructions and pulled through countless blades. After time, most of my knifes have rounded tips and divots at the start. Now I have had to reshape them. Hard lessoned learned
I didn't buy the Ken Onion, but I have the original one, I used to use the guide, but I started free handing it and i've found it that I have WAY better results free-handing it. I also use a leather strop at the end, I work as a production butcher, I need a sharp knife and for it to more importantly KEEP it's edge, I am extremely pleased how the convex edge keeps it's edged.
I have this and use it to re-profile my blades to 15-17.5 degrees. Then use a Sharpmaker to create a 20 degree micro-bevel. Works well. But, like you I use to pause for half a second when I first start the belt before pulling the knife along the belt....this will soon create a recurve at the ricasso. Be sure to start moving the blade the exact instant you start the belt. Thanks for the review.
Every single one of us who have been manually sharpening will have this reaction after a few passes on our favorite knife. This weird contradicting reaction you witness is the countless hours of messy and repetetive, metal smelling, sessions of sharpening. To realise, yeah it was that simple. Throw in that big cash and be fn DONE with it LOL. I haven't even ordered it yet and I already have a line up of knifes I want to sharpen in my head.
I have the version before this Ken Onion version, I must say this new version has some upgrade features that I wish I have. The angle dialer is great, the blade roller guide is also very handy, the variable speed with lock is excellent. So far I have used mine for hunting knives and EDC knives. I have not tried on my Japanese chef knife yet because it is sharpened from the factory about 8 to 12 degrees per side. I have not found anything can do such a steep angle except freehand with a wet stone. Anything else the Work Sharp sharpener is quick and easy to use.
I have been using one for a couple of years now. Works fantastic. I use it on everything from 25 degree pocket knives to 15 degree hand forged Japanese chef knives the wife owns. gets everything scar sharp. Company is also great to work with. My first machine was out of warranty when it developed a problem, They replaced it anyway. Still have and use the original course belt that came with the machine.
The Work Sharp KOE is an excellent system as is, but coupling it with the Blade Grinding Attachment really maximizes its usefulness. I've been using one for a couple years now, and it is a truly excellent system.
I have one in my kitchen and I really enjoy it. One thing I learned was to not start the unit until the knife was in place and stop the unit before you pull the blade tip off.
I've used the standard edition for about a year. The replacement belts are not that expensive. You can sharpen basically anything with these including scissors and lawn mower blades. I did notice the Ken Onion edition has a few bells and whistles that are pretty useful. I'd love to get one. Great video like usual. Thanks
One thing about this sharpener, when you first drop the knife down onto the belt and then start to pull back, the blade is exposed to the belt for a longer period of time, after a few sharpenings, I noticed that I was losing material at the end of the blade. You have to make very sure you do not hesitate at the beginning of the stroke or you will start to notch the blades.
That is an amazing thing. I love sharpening knives but it is always an "event" like Mr. W said, so I am not always very diligent about keeping up with it. But with this I would no longer have an excuse to have a dull knife. Thanks for sharing sir.
I’ve used this one and have the original. Absolutely love these. A bit of a learning curve to keep from taking the tip off the knife but gets it very sharp very fast
I bought the sharpener. It sharpens kitchen knives perfectly. I always have trouble manually sharpening kitchen knives on a stone. Thank you for your help.
I've watched a few of your videos and really appreciate how professional your reviews are. Also God bless you for your bravery. So many either don't know who they are or are ashamed. Thanks for your courage!
I was watching a demonstration video made by Worksharp and they say to put the knife into position BEFORE pulling the trigger and then pull the trigger while simultaneously pulling the knife back. This prevents areas that can get gouged while getting the blade into position. At the point where the tip of the knife is midpoint on the abrasive belt, you should release the trigger and stop knife movement at the same time. They say that this prevents the tip from getting rounded over when it clears the edge of the belt. Thanks for the review, I’ve been contemplating purchasing one, now I’m convinced.
Neat to see one of these in action. I can see it being great for yard tools. Wonder how well it would work for recurved blades? I legitimately enjoy hand sharpening knives, I find it therapeutic, so I doubt it would get me to give up my whetstones.
There's a special way to sharpen recurved, as there is for gut hooks, serrated, scissors, tools and single sided blades. Directions come in the box, and the manufacturer has several vids. Ken Onion is a custom knifemaker who designed the model used in this video to work with pretty much everything. Its just been a great toy for me. I kept my whetstones for sentimental reasons, but pitched every other crappy sharpening gizmo I've tried over the years. Oh, kept the ceramic rods because they look nice out at Thanksgiving. Don't use them, but they look nice and fancy.
Wicked Coyote Works extremely well but you have to follow directions and not spend a lot of time on one belt. If you don’t stop and start the machine as directed you will round the tip off and if you don’t do just a few passes until you get a bur you will burn through the metal before you know it. Also keep a bucket of water handy to cool the blade.
Unmentioned in the video is that WorkSharp also offers diamond belts specifically made to re-sharpen chipped-out ceramic knives. That's why I bought mine and it works wonderfully for that otherwise difficult-to-impossible chore. Between self and friends we have a dozen or more ceramic knives and this device refurbished those edges to like-new again. I've also learned that a convex edge, such as this machine delivers, stays sharp longer than straight-angle edge whether steel or ceramic. For a general purpose sharpener this one's a winner, IMHO. Thanks for the review. Good video and audio.
I use this ken onion work sharp for years for all my knifes and it is truly amazing tool.. Huge thumbs up on vid and tool forsure..Great channel.. God bliss
@@hudsonmclean4233 I have been using this system with an extra nozzle without guides for more than five years. This is truly an ideal system for household and work knives. Even more, since this system more than once helped me out to fit small parts, for example, grinding part of the mechanism of my rifle. For all this time I have never changed the belt, although I feel that the first red belt is already time to change. This is the case when the advertisement is not lying, but you have to learn how to use this device.
Great choice of knives! I've been researching knife sharpeners lately and I keep finding this one at the top of everyone's list. I've tried many kinds, and like you, believe most are a pain to fiddle with. Makes sense to get a mini version of what the factories and pro know makers use. Thanks for the honest review!
I have one in my truck. Its called a 12 volt Inverter. LOL Sorry, I couldn't resist. Seriously tho they would have to convert not only DC to AC it would also have to convert whatever battery voltage as well to match the sharpener. It would be far too costly.
Congratulations! This is the most expensive UA-cam video I have ever watched. It caused me to order one straightaway. As soon as it arrived I sharpened all the knives I used. Then I found all the other knives that I don't use and sharpened them as well. I shredded practically a whole magazine. So satisfying. Now I have no knives left to sharpen and all fruit and veg is now server chopped or sliced!
These sharpeners are the best. I've been wanting one of these for ever. I have the small portable manual one that I use all the time. If I could afford it I would have bought one but being a disabled veteran I can't afford one. Love your videos.
A point to be made. If your blade does not have a convex grind, you should do 10 strokes on one side until you feel a burr, then do 10 on the other side and then 1 or 2 on either side to finish up. You will think you can cut frog hair 4 ways.
For an electric sharpener this is the best for all experience levels. As for use do not pull knife slow as done in video. This causes excessive and uneven blade wear. Also when using the stropping belt (per video honing stage) you need to alternate sides as it is a polishing stage to debur evenly.
How about one in blaze orange. You could hook up with Real Tree too for camo and of course safety yellow is a must. I’m getting the fizz and I have a full head of natural hair.
I've been a guided free-hand sharpener for 14 years. I have enjoyed the hour-per-knife sharpening by hand and avoiding heat that can change a knife's Rockwell numbers, thus ruining something beautiful. I bought one of these tonight to try out. I have high hopes, but I'm skeptical. I'll follow up.
Alright. Two knives in. Great sharpener if you have experience. It took a minute to figure out how to get the tip of the knife and still touch the guide. Dusty, not as noisy as you would imagine, about as loud as a hair dryer. Blades to get warm, but not enough to affect anything. READ THE INSTRUCTIONS AND LEARN WHAT EVERYTHING DOES AND WHY! Like most things Ken has had a hand in, its great. I'm still not ready to give up free-hand, but I'll use this for 6 months and see how it compares. New to sharpening, do not use a machine.
Thank you for the review! I've been in the market for a good sharpening system for awhile, but just couldn't quite pull the trigger on one. Just placed the order for this one. 👍🏻
I bought one of these because of this recommendation, when the video was new (3 years ago). I’ve used it since and it’s very good. Still in good shape. It’s pretty expensive, but if you use it frequently you save money in the long run. My kitchen knives were so bad I thought I’d have to buy new ones, but this put them in good shape and was cheaper than a new set of knives. I’ve used it since to keep them in good shape.
Save a fortune and just use sanding pads on a grinder, to strop I just glue a piece of leather to a sanding disk with buffing compound and it works amazing.
I have the regular model. The Ken Onion one you got has better adjustments and the belts are a little wider. The model I have will sharpen all my knives as sharp as I have ever been able to get with any other sharpener I have ever used.
I've been looking for a good sharpener due to your videos and my dad and grandfather's insistence on sharp tools. Thank you for doing this video. Winnner, winner chicken dinner! Please show the accessories as well. :o) Blessings friend
Quick, easy and it gets the job done. Belts have longevity and replacements are not too expensive. I got mine at Bass Pro. To keep or produce a pointed tip don't bring the knife all the way across the belt. You did that well.
A good tip for using one of these with highly polished or pretty knives is to put masking tape on the blade where it contacts the guide or the grit powder will leave parallel scratches along the length. Other than that this sharpener is one of the most flexible out there that doesn't potentially ruin your knife if you're sloppy. Just don't go crazy at high speed on the coarse belt and avoid rounding your tip!

@@frederikmare9002 Yep!!!
I have one in my kitchen and I really enjoy it. One thing I learned was to not start the unit until the knife was in place and stop the unit before you pull the blade tip off.
Puberty is tough.... Love the videos as always.
Hi Cody. I miss the old Wranglerstar intro with the grensfors axes. It put me in the mood for your videos. Love your channel! 😎
I do too
I've used the standard edition for about a year. The replacement belts are not that expensive. You can sharpen basically anything with these including scissors and lawn mower blades. I did notice the Ken Onion edition has a few bells and whistles that are pretty useful. I'd love to get one. Great video like usual. Thanks
I have the original one as well. I want to upgrade to this one as well. One of my favorite sharpeners
I've always wondered if this was a gimick or a really good sharpener. Thanks for the honest review.
deff not a gimmick and that can be seen by the very many reviews.
One of the best purchases I’ve ever made.
I use one of these and mostly use the blade grinder attachment. Love it
One thing about this sharpener, when you first drop the knife down onto the belt and then start to pull back, the blade is exposed to the belt for a longer period of time, after a few sharpenings, I noticed that I was losing material at the end of the blade.
The Ken Onion edition is a major improvement to the original which was best of class .
Is it good for pocket knives
@@christianhurlburt8436 I mean it can sharpen the 940 good as new in like 7 minutes so I’d say yeah definitely
I’ve been curious how well they actually worked. Thanks for doing a review.
Wicked Coyote
Works extremely well but you have to follow directions and not spend a lot of time on one belt.
God bliss
Quick question, how often do you need to purchase new belts?
@@hudsonmclean4233 I have been using this system with an extra nozzle without guides for more than five years. This is truly an ideal system for household and work knives. Even more, since this system more than once helped me out to fit small parts, for example, grinding part of the mechanism of my rifle. For all this time I have never changed the belt, although I feel that the first red belt is already time to change. This is the case when the advertisement is not lying, but you have to learn how to use this device.
$118.99 on Amazon right now. i am definitely ordering one... thanks for the info, great review.
what about the 60 dollar one how different is that one
or do you know
What about knives with thumb studs or bigger thumb studs? Looks like it gets in the way so you can't sharpen the entire knife.
This plus a battery conversion system that will take major cordless tool batteries such as Milwaukee, priceless
Been using an apex for years - been hesitant to get one of these. Thanks for the review!
That’s insanely fast. I tried whetstones but I’m no good at them
Some knifes are easier then others. But have issues myself at times.
I own one of these, watched your entire video because it is nice to get co-agreement on things. Good video.
I second that...had mine since 2015...love it. Belts are easily affordable
Great video I've been looking at this sharper for about a year.
Thanks
Good video, have seen this sharper on various sites. Thanks for confirming the quality.
Until I witnessed your reaction and assessment, I wouldn't have considered one. Now, I will.
You should...
I've had one for about a year now. There is a learning curve with it, but love my Work Sharp!!
I've been eyeing these for years, gotta throw my hat in for the drawing.
I believe they recommend stopping the belt at the end of the stroke before lifting the tip to avoid knocking down the point.
Yes they do. I've owned one of these for 3 years and love it.
For an electric sharpener this is the best for all experience levels. As for use do not pull knife slow as done in video. This causes excessive and uneven blade wear. Also when using the stropping belt (per video honing stage) you need to alternate sides as it is a polishing stage to debur evenly.
You should do like a tactical toupee...for going to the range..and doing op's.
Lol
My thoughts exactly. Some different camo styles would be epic.
Maybe one you can mount a go pro on.
How about one in blaze orange. You could hook up with Real Tree too for camo and of course safety yellow is a must. I’m getting the fizz and I have a full head of natural hair.
For the 940 its MUCH easier to do if u pull of the thumb studs
Awesome. Been looking at this. This review swayed me to want to purchase. Thank you for great review.
Great video, your honesty shines through. Thanks 😎👍
Yes another draw would be great! This east coaster is unable to sharpen anything.🤪
I've tried my Dremmel tool with a sandpaper bit on my cheap axe and it worked really well.
Save a fortune and just use sanding pads on a grinder, to strop I just glue a piece of leather to a sanding disk with buffing compound and it works amazing.
ill take the russain sharpener no bother, yea know, to help you out with your minimising lol
Heh, keep your hopes up, if he likes the Work Sharp enough, he might do a giveaway! :D
He might do a give away but postage to ireland might be a deal breaker
@@crystalstanborough4053 good luck. he'd never part with those
I have the regular model. The Ken Onion one you got has better adjustments and the belts are a little wider. The model I have will sharpen all my knives as sharp as I have ever been able to get with any other sharpener I have ever used.
i been pondering about getting this but u convinced me and i just ordered it ... thank you
What do you think of it?
@@kenbar4761 i like it was a bit confusing on the belt grades for me but it really has a fantastic end result. order extra belts when you buy this.
@@grenaldalves Thanks for replying, I am going to have a look for the cheapest supplier, and buy one. :)
@@kenbar4761 there are generic ones available for half the price my guess its from the same factory they look identical
@@grenaldalves great I'll have a look at those, thanks.👍
Wranglerstar there’s an upgraded version for knifes and tools let me know if you want the link to it.
Looks very versatile! Great for the advid blade user "kitchen/untilty/machete" great review!
You've seriously never seen or tried one of these before?!? I have had the Ken Onion version for a couple years. Absolutely love it.
Always wondered about those type of sharpeners
I am only obsessed with sharpening knives and axes because I have watched so many videos of you sharpening things!!!!
This is an amazing knife sharpener, easy to use, quick to set up and they are made here in the USA!
I've been looking for a good sharpener due to your videos and my dad and grandfather's insistence on sharp tools. Thank you for doing this video.
Winnner, winner chicken dinner!
Please show the accessories as well. :o) Blessings friend
Get it, best investment you will ever make in knife sharpening
I'm glad I found this review. I have seen this at the store and didn't expect it to work so well.
The Wranglerstar Toupee Line.....lol😂
eh for the $120 price tag, you could get a real good bench grind that can give a great sharpening (plenty of vids on youtube how to)
time investment through.
Quick, easy and it gets the job done. Belts have longevity and replacements are not too expensive. I got mine at Bass Pro. To keep or produce a pointed tip don't bring the knife all the way across the belt. You did that well.
This would be perfect for my dad who's hands and grip isn't as good as it used to be. Great vid as always.ThankQ. TkEZ>UK
Never wore the Grayson, but I do own both the Calgary and the Bon Vivant. Good stuff.
I prefer the Excalibur in a salty brown for day to day wear.
@@stevenradams It was sold out or I would'a snatched that gorgeous puppy right up.
The grayson stays put while doing interpretive dance
A good tip for using one of these with highly polished or pretty knives is to put masking tape on the blade where it contacts the guide or the grit powder will leave parallel scratches along the length. Other than that this sharpener is one of the most flexible out there that doesn't potentially ruin your knife if you're sloppy. Just don't go crazy at high speed on the coarse belt and avoid rounding your tip!
