      So do you prefer the work sharp over the MDF/leather wheel on a bench grinder? Obviously the wheels on a grinder is a much larger setup and costs a good bit more but its a lifetime purchase if you take care of it. I dont think the work sharp will be around for a lifetime...

      The irony in making a 13 minute video on how to sharpen a knife in 90 seconds and in reality it probably to 45 minutes to get everything thing set up and film it. Thank you for all the hard work you put in to entertaining and educating a ignorant midwesterner.

      The block you’re using at 10:00 - is there a substitute for this that one can use which doesn’t kill an animal? I’m a vegetarian, so I don’t buy anything that comes from a dead animal, including leather products.

      Hahaha... was thinking something similar. Got to admit though that my experience says most guys who are interested in sharpening go through a number of different methods. Reminds me of all the hunting equipment I've been through, both bow and gun. I'm getting to where I want less but I'm really particular about what I want :-)

    I have used a Chef's Choice with three sharpening slots for years and have friends who have bought one after seeing what mine will do. It is so simple with nothing to change or set. Just plug it in and sharpen your knife in a jiffy. While it may not make it as sharp as the one on this video, it does provide a good sharp blade that is a joy to use. After the initial sharpening, it only takes seconds to restore the edge. But, like my brother in law says, that's why they make Fords and Chevrolets. We all have different preferences. Thanks for the video Cody. I always enjoy your videos.

    Cool! I just lost my husband of 43 yrs. He instructed me to go out to the shop and get that knife sharpener machine and bring it to his bedside
    And ALL the knives. He proceeded to teach me to sharpen all outer knives.
    I kinda forgot by now..so thank you! I will save this video.

    I bought one of these a while back before Cody had his sent to him anonymously by someone. I didn't open it for about a week and in the back of my mind I was wondering if Cody had seen one of these. Then I saw his video of him first getting this pop up and after watching him play with it I got mine out and played with it and sharpened everything in the house. It is really a great little knife sharpener highly recommended

    I inherited a small (1/2x1x4) ultra fine stone from my dad. I my 69 years have not seen another. I use it at a shallow angle every second time I use a knife. The knifes almost never need anything else unless I forget one for a while. Our favorite two knifes haven't needed anything else in 4 years.

    Good video. As a person who uses knives for work cutting meat I'd need to buy knives every year if I used that, lol. I know it works well but it eats the blade up like crazy if you sharpen often. “Banging around in a drawer” maybe make a knife block or a magnetic holder in the next video?

    • @texasplumr
      @texasplumr 4 роки тому +2

      +1 on that. I don't even like butcher blocks and I'll certainly never put any of my good knives in a drawer. I have magnetic strips that I screwed to the sides of a cabinet and they stay put with no danger of children grabbing them and they're not going to fall off. I keep a set of cheaper knives on the counter top in a wooden butcher block which are handy for anyone to use. My dad was a butcher and he taught me how to properly care for a good knife and how to use good Old Arkansas stone. I may not be as fast as that machine but I never let mine get dull either.

  • @Lfomod1Dubstep
    @Lfomod1Dubstep 4 роки тому +1

    I am sharpening with whetstones, and the stropping is kinda important in the end to not go for a super high angle since it can absolutely bend the burr if you stroke the knife too many times on one side and a bit less on the other side. Important to not push too hard on the leather too, just use the knifes weight basically.
    What I tend to do is that I first go 20 strokes on one side, then 20 on the other, and then I do 10 on each, 5 on each and at last 1 time on each side like 10 times. Just to be sure that it's straight and balanced :) I use a green compound for that, makes a super polished egg with a mirror. Now that's fine for a chef knife for example, but will be getting dull faster on a knife you use in the woods for example. So it's better to leave the knife at a higher grit and then strop it :)

    Also bought one after your first review and never regretted it. The only caveat I would point is that since it creates somewhat of a rounded edge, you want to use this sharpener at all times afterwards. May not be suitable to switch between types of sharpeners (i.e. sharpen other people's knives just once in a blue moon) or those knifes will get ground down significantly each time they get sharpened with another platform.

Unmentioned in the video is that WorkSharp also offers diamond belts specifically designed to refurbish ceramic knives....which was the reason I bought mine. Resharpening ceramic blades is nightmare by any other method. This device does them quickly, easily and perfectly. Convex edges also last longer whether ceramic or steel.

    I went with the Wusthof fixed, ceramic rod sharpeners. No matter how beat my knives get, 10 pulls through and it's sharp and ready for action. I've got 2 because there's one for santoku (asian) knives as they have a steeper angle. We cook every meal at home from scratch so I use my knives a lot and it's really nice to be able to grab the sharpener right out of the drawer and in less than a minute have it scary sharp once again and the sharpener back in the drawer. For everything else I've got a 3 stone set of diamond stones from harbor freight that has served me well for over a decade and was only $7.99 for the set. I would point out that often the simplest solution is best and my sharpeners don't require electricity.

    I free hand mine, use to use stones when I was a chef. But now that I'm not in the bizz I don't have the drive to spend that much time. But since then I've gotten super good at using 120 grit belt sander free hand and then finishing on a strop. It's sooo much faster and still yeilds a shaving sharp edge. Might not be as refined but the difference of an hour in the stones to 60 seconds on a belt is night and day

    I love my work sharp, have gotten a few really nice quality knives on the cheap out of a thrift store grab bin because they were dull as a 2x4.

    ken onion is a amazing knife maker. He makes a knife prototype and company's have the ability to buy the design and create it. He has some amazing knifes. One of my favorites is the Ripple.

    Could you do a video on sharpening a serrated edge?

    still doing it free style-- for that kid of money it should be guided--- professional butchers uses a few passes on a mild stone and always use their steel-- they cut up several beeves a day-- the bearded butchers--- they would have to buy knives weekly if they ground their knives as much as a grinder does--- plus a stone works when the power is out-- them times are coming

    He makes a good point about warning wife/kids. My daughter cut her finger bad after I sharpened the kitchen knives. And I DID warn them, but they just didn't really understand... what a sharp knife can do.

      Every. Single. Time I have visitors, I tell/remind them about my knives and how sharp they are.
      Even the people who have used my knives multiple times, and who visit weekly (with a mask, because my momma taught me to catch no flies!)
      "if I warn you in advance, it's not my fault you lose a finger"

    I have been using that system, with the accessory blade grinding attachment for a couple of years and I never realized the spring tensioner locked back with a twist! No more awkward Kung fu grip necessary!

    Hey Cody...FYI..you can get leather belts for the Work Sharp. I got one for mine and it makes quick work for stropping.

    Thanks for the video Cody! I forgot I had a Work-Sharp kicking around and my wife has been complaining about dull kitchen knives. I don't have the additional Ken Onion you used - seems it would come in handy for bigger blades...

    I love mine. Can get a pocket knife shaving sharp in just a few minutes! Sure, I'd love to be able to use my whetstone like that, but truth be told that's just not something I'm passionate enough about to put the time in when I have other hobbies and duties.
