Derek Jacobi, the first time I saw him was on I, Claudius. I was shocked about his brilliant performance. Not mentioning the rest of the cast. Now UA-cam brings me here. Finally the algorithm is working.
I had seen him before - in the 70es in a somewhat older Chekhov play on TV and then in "Philby Burgess and McClean". I thought: That guy with the eyebrows - WOW! He´s something!. Then I got fascinated with Claudius - and HAD to go to London (Old Vic) 3 times to watch him play Hamlet! Luckily, the production also played at Elsinore Castle in ´82, where I got to watch it twice! :-) Lucky me!
How wonderful that Sir Derek Jacobi, who delivered the best "To be or not to be" speech (in my opinion), should now utter this wonderful Socrates' speech. Listening carefully, I realized this speech is the reverse of the first one : no despair, no fear, not wondering what is on the other side, but a quiet acceptance of one's date and hope for better things to come.
It is actually fitting he give this speech since is is the counter-point to Hamlet's thoughts on why he should not commit suicide. Jacobi's is my favorite Hamlet out of all the actors who have played Hamlet.
I love that I can come back to this every now and then, and still pick up something new.
What a magnificent thing this is. Plato speaking for Socrates... as performed by our own great Emperor -Claudius- Derek Jacobi.
Amen!
Truly outstanding!
