Here's Why a 2.5L 986 Porsche Boxster is NOT a Complete Waste Of Time (Review)

  • Every sports car manufacturer has that one model which is a very cheap point of entry, but doesn't carry much kudos. Today we're looking at Porsche's - the first generation of Boxster, in the least powerful trim. With barely 200 horsepower to drag it along, can the Boxster even call itself a sports car, and should you bother even thinking about buying one?

Having driven many many Porsches, including GT3's, turbos, air cooled, water cooled etc..... I honestly think the original 2.5 boxster is possibly the most pure and enjoyable sports cars of modern times.
It's light, its direct, it's analogue it's not full of nanny electronic trickery and it's pure.
It's not so fast it will have you worried about your licence and yet it's fast enough to be able to push on and enjoy the perfect balanced handling at sensible speeds. Top down, the howl of a flat six engine behind you and all for around £5k.
One of my all time favourites.

Of course, if you put the Panamera's and the SUV's into the mix, he has a point.

It is a stone cold classic, no bells or whistles, flat 6 engine, the pragmatic interior is all 90’s style. If you know anything about cars and you have driven a nice example of these 2.5, you come to the conclusion that you came to. I have one, and when I want a chipper cruise about I take the keys over my faster 911... today the sun is shining and mines going for a spin and I will enjoy every inch of the journey. No bells or whistles, eh? My MR2 Spyder or NA Miata would beg to differ..... 700lbs adds a considerable amount of weight over those! I do enjoy my 2000 Boxster S, but it makes too many luxury-oriented compromises to be considered a bare-bones sports car.

@@EliasTheHunter the early 2.5 has no air con, no cruise control, no amplifiers, no heated seats, it does not even have a glove box, that is the definition of no bells and whistles in this particular case. My car weighs 1105kg and has 214bhp, this is like me comparing my old 1990 MR2 to your spider, except my MR2 was scrapped back in 2002 ( 12 years old ) for being a rust bucket. • @manfromanotherplace2548
      @manfromanotherplace2548 3 роки тому +8

A classic? Not yet, but it will be, and I agree that the less equitment and extra specs, the purer it is. The more you overload a 986 with stuff (and thus weight) the more it becomes like ....well a GT carof sorts. A sports car should minimalistic, raw and stripped of all things not needed. Well, that is my take on it anyway.
A well sorted 2.5 will give anyone a thrill, if they take the time to get to know how to dtive it. I wanted an S because of the extra power, but after trying a lot of S, 2.7 and 2.5 I went for a 2.5. Yes, the S is faster in a straight line, but on small, bendy roads (where this car belongs) the difference is minimal. Would like the 3rd air intake from the S though. Just to be 110% sure will driving around town in summer. The stock brakes on a 2.5/2.7 are very good. No need to add the extra weight to the car, that the S brakes does. Same goes for the 6 speed gearbox.
Dont get me wrong here. The S is great. But personally I dont think I get so much from an S that I would pay the extra money. As for the IMS the pre-2000 cars (which is the 2.5) have a better bearing than the later ones. Then again later cars can of course be fitted with an upgrade bearing. But it is expensive.
When the time comes for the Boxster to be a real classic, I think the price gap between 2.5 and S will disappear. In the world of classic cars the first and original serie is (almost) always the desired one. Yes, the S is still a 986, I know, but extra power is not the same as extra money with classic cars. First generation standard cars are usually what collectors what. The Jag E-type is a good example. Same goes with the various 911 cars.
Well, that is just my 5 cents!
Buttom line is that any Boxster is great. And the time as a laughing stock is beginning to end. Buy one now. While you still can afford it!

Neither is a sports car, so both are for people who want to do more miles in a Porsche but not in their sports cars (which aren't the most refined things...), but the Panamera is far superior to both for that, although it too is very much not a sports car.

    I have a pristine 1997 986 2.5.
    For reference, I've previously owned more sought after Porsches, including 997.1 GT3, 997.2 GT3 RS, 987 Spyder, 996 Turbo S, 993 RS, 964 Cup, 911 RS 3.0 recreation...
So, why do I own a base 2.5 despite having the means to afford more "prestigious" cars ?
Because it's quite possibly the most engaging, endearing and rewarding sports car I've ever driven.
The back-to-basics nature of the car is a breath of fresh air, because the basics in question are so well judged.
Everything important is as good as any other Porsche : steering, gear change, throttle, brake, driving position, width, rigidity, ride, agility, adjustability.
The relatively low grip and viceless chassis make the car so approachable, and the low power and torque are a positive feature, making it possible to indulge in the car with abandon.
The thrill of a 986 2.5 resides in making the most of the available go, having to keep the eager engine on the boil and working to maintain through corners the speed gained on the straights.
The gears are nice and short (that is so important in a sports car), shorter than on the 2.7, and the engine eager to rev and tuneful (especially with the de snorkel induction mod and Crios exhaust mod).
The genius of the base 986 resides in offering engagement and driving thrill that can be totally accessed any time any place, without scaring other road users or risking one's licence. Buying this car was a revelation.
For all these reasons it's a car that I'd still have in my stable (and drive very often) even if I were a billionaire.
If you love driving, please go try one ! You're welcome :)

Actually the car's output is within a couple of horses of the original Carrera 2.7 RS. And a Boxster 2.5 is good for about 150 MPH, which is enough to hold your head up in the left lane if you happen to be travelling on a stretch of the autobahn which doesn't have a speed limit. Hardly slouch performance. Each succeeding model goes up from there.

They're relatively slow cars by modern standards though- my old hybrid had 200hp...with the engine turned off (that engine having about 300, so admittedly that was a silly hybrid). The Boxster has Fiesta levels of power. Anyway, point is, it doesn't really matter that it's a bit slow. A good chassis and all that means much more than straight line performance. I looked at replacing aforementioned hybrid with an F13 M6, which of course is crazy fast...but also boring as hell to drive (most disappointing test drive of my life to be honest). Ended up with a 981CS which is anything but boring! Fun > speed.

@@wadimek116 I assume you meant "faster than many new cars" rather than "any new cars" - in which case, typo, fair enough and I do agree. Still, having daily driven a 3.4L 981CS for 3 years, I can confidently say the Peugeot 308 GTi (1.6L hatchback) I'm driving now would *SMASH* a 986 round any track. That's what I meant by it not being fast - many common cars are faster.
It's not a bad thing though, the reason I bought the Pug was that I was bored of cars I couldn't push on the road, a 986 is slow enough that you can use the performance, that's good. Anyone who wants 0-60 in 2s is a moron, why is that good? Oh yay my neck hurts, my tyres are ruined and I proved that I'm a great driver by pressing a pedal...pushing a car is fun, faster cars are for people who want to get home quickly so they can brag about how fast their car is while being happy they spent less time in it because it's not enjoyable.
*There are many valid reasons for buying fast cars, I like them. It's just that "being faster" isn't one of those reasons. Also it's not unreasonable to argue the 308 is too fast anyway (until I looked, I thought they were "just" Focus ST fast, but nope!) still, I wanted the spec, I'm a hypocrite, I'm ok with it 😄
That's a long way of saying this: I wouldn't call the 986 fast, because it's not a compliment. The 986 is a proper Porsche, it's a great sports car and being not too fast is a very good thing in that case. In the hands of a good driver, it's very much not slow, but I don't think that really matters at all. Anyone who wants fast buys a chipped Golf R, people who can drive prefer a 986 😁

As a hobby mechanic, this is how I tackle engine reliability issues. I owned one of these 986 boxsters. After buying the car, I then bought a second engine from a wrecking yard. Now while I'm driving the boxster as absolutely as hard as I can, I'm also tearing apart, rebuilding, sometimes upgrading the second engine. Then once the engine in the car goes, or I become impatient, I'll swap engines. Now I'll have a fully rebuilt engine to use, and a second engine I can now rebuild, then sell. This isn't the cheapest thing to do, but with the sale of original rebuilt engine, it covers alot of the cost of doing this. I also never once worry about something like a IMS bearing, etc. I've done this sort of thing with a E36 M3, C4 Corvette, Z32 300zx, Z32 300zx, etc, etc.

I have had my 2003 Boxster Base for 5 years. I really love this Porsche. I always wanted a Porsche when I was young, but could not afford what I wanted. I was 69 years old when I saw my 03 Boxster in a dealers lot, in USA. I bought it within a couple days. It was not taken care of by the last owner, but I made up for that and never was upset or regretful for buying this car with 95,000 miles on it. Nice video you made here and keep up the good work.

I bought a '99 Boxster with the 2.7litre motor for my son. I bought it from a friend for $4k USD with 97k miles on it. I replaced the top with a glass window version and serviced it, but otherwise it has been a great little car. My wife and I took it on a road trip from Silicon Valley to Paso Robles in CA's central coast for our anniversary. Great little car! Handles well, 217 bhp gives stronger performance than the 2.5 and the ride is very compliant yet still sporty! We have the all leather interior (silver car and black interior) that looks classically German. I also love the engine note, much better than a 911 sounds. I can hear the intake honk! Increasingly it is quite hard to find roads that a free of traffic and where one might exceed the speed limit! I think more info on Porsche running costs would be interesting for us non-owners.
Like yourself I have an oldish 69,500 miles Ferrari, & I’m awaiting your realisation on your 550, that they can cost unexpected bills! Mine has had £4,000 on electric gremlins in the last 6weeks!
I’ve thought of having an oldish Porsche too, but tales of expense with IMS & RMS etc are killers! I always had old Ferrari’s since 1982, and they do need money spent on them. But the enjoyment comes from the times they drive wonderfully in the same way you just enjoyed the old Boxster. The buying is only part of the expense story.

Bought one of these, a base 986 from 98, for 3.5k€ in early 2015 and ran it to the ground as my daily until earlier this year. I only did oil, tires and brakes maintenance, nothing else. Many things went wrong over the years, cosmetics issues, roof becoming manual, suspension squeak, AC not working, window being blocked, speakers not working, spoiler not working, but it never ever left me stranded. It a nearly killed me on a mountain road when the power steering fluid pipe exploded mid turn leaving oil on my rear tires, but it then worked without power steering for over three years.
I’ve sold it for parts to a garage as it seriously overheated leaving coolant on the ground and white smoke, but learnt that he managed to do quick fixes and sold it again for the price I had bought it for.

Life intervenes, kids come along, and the reality is I am never going to be able to own another 911.
A friend who happens to sell cars called me up and said I needed to come drive this Porsche they had just taken in before it hit the lot. It hadn't been cleaned up or prepped for sale yet. I had a yellow Boxster S Tiptronic for 10 years a while ago - it was a really useable car - I sometimes wish I hadn't sold it, OK, the plastic rear screen was a problem but I replaced that at a specialist in Surrey who did a great job - the roof never leaked. At the Millau bridge in France, there were more people taking photos of my car than the bridge. Later boosters are even better but When I took a 911 out for a day long test it felt fat and lazy - I preferred the the Boxster and or the Cayman.
It was definitely a car I could work on - eg window winder mechs were only as difficult as taking out the airbags. They are the best fun for the money with the most class as long as you look after it. It didn't have sat nav, no phone connection, no connection for iPhone and that was a bit of a problem for everyday use - it had a lot of storage surprisingly and it was a LOT of fun!

I buy these Boxsters quite often and they are extremely popular more on 2,7 version. They are expensive to maintain but it's a classic in making it will turn to the point where will suddenly increase in price.
