I’ve been a physical media fan since I was a kid and we were so poor all we could afford for fun stuff, was the old technology of the past. And going through the motions of using physical media, makes you appreciate the media you’re watching, and be aware of how much media you have that you don’t like or want taking up space. And you had a point there at the end of the video about making yourself inconvenienced, to appreciate the stuff you used and give it meaning, that’s what we’re missing with modern technology. There’s not ritual to it. The small little rituals of something like physical media, going in the living room to pick a vhs tape or going to blockbuster to pick a movie out, making popcorn and getting your family friends gathered in the room, watching the previews, and just sitting there watching, there’s nothing that can replace that. Or like if you wanted to listen to a cd back in the day, you had to go to your media shelf and pick out a CD, go put it in the cd player and hit play. Or same thing for vinyl records. All these tiny little things involved in selecting the stuff you want to consume actually adds up to your appreciation of a thing more than you would think. And modern tech just has no personality or character to it, since the iPhone came out. It’s all about making things sleek and simple, and forcing things to be more convenient even if it doesn’t need to be.

As a person who actively collects VHS, laserdisc and DVDs my only complaint about VHS is that you end up watching most movies in “pan and scan” format. In this regard i think DVD is far superior due to the movies being presented in their proper widescreen format, but VHS tapes are still fun as hell to collect and watch

There are dozens of movies considered "classics" which might -- are you ready? - actually be in black & white!!! - and were NOT filmed in 16:9!! These types of movies, from the 1940's through the 60's are perfectly preserved on VHS, and might even be worth a look!

Happy to be part of this movement. Been listening to albums on CD from start to finish every morning and it's a different world from listening to music while doing ten other things and bouncing from track to track across various artists. Plus I know the music was created by actual human beings and is not AI generated.

I never got into streaming; I always preferred physical media and ended up having that vindicated by the way these corporations splintered up the streaming, edited their products on the sly, or even just straight-up pulled stuff off the platform. My copies of Dumbo or Peter Pan doesn't have some "content warning" on it.
Recently I got a converter so my VCR will work again. I've hooked up my DVD player near my computer so I can listen to my movies and shows. I've gotten a music player that plays everything from records to tapes to CDs. And yes, I've pirated shows that never got a proper release, not even on streaming. Some people might mock those of us who prefer cultivating these collections, but my collection is tailored to me, not them, and it's not dependent on a constant internet connection either.

Love it man. For me, picking up physical media is basically the highest praise I can give to a show or movie. If I’m buying a movie on tape or a box set of a show, it’s my gold seal of approval. And adding films and shows to my physical collection is always super exciting.
8:40 as far as trying to pick out a movie to watch with your girlfriend. What I like doing is we take turns picking, and when we pick a movie we also have to think of a dinner and drink option that pairs with the movie. It makes us actually always have a plan for what to watch next and we never get stuck undecided about what to watch anymore.

I love physical media. My wife and I put off streaming services for YEARS and we never had cable. So we ended up with a ton of dvds that we never got rid of luckily. Once we had our kiddo, we bought a box of 100 Disney (and similar) VHS tapes for something like $20. I started buying vinyl records of the albums that mean a lot to me and I use film for family pictures and trips in a photo album. It will be nice to pass all this along to our kiddo rather than everything getting lost when a phone breaks. Plus who knows how long streaming services will last.

16:27 you know I've heard that 35mm film looks so good today because it has the equivalent of 35 million pixels. That may not be accurate but yeah it captures sooo much more detail than digital cameras. Its why a 4K remaster of 60 year old movie can look so good.

Way back when the dvd came out there were all these magazine and newspaper articles telling you that the life span of a VHS tape was only 8 years so you need to just throw them out and get the space saving and far superior DVD along with the player. I never could get rid of mine. I loved them so much especially when they were being left at thrift shops and resold for practically nothing. I now have too many to count all in shelves in the garage. They did not deteriorate save a few that got white mold probably from poor storage by a previous owner. It makes me wonder what things will look like 10 years from now. Will amazon or some other service have a monopoly on all movies and be free to charge high prices like $20 pay per view on everything? I left the streaming subscription scene a few years ago and have been building my collection in physical media for the last 15 years. I pay more overall but it's an investment also. Buy once, watch multiple times. I can sell it , trade it, or keep it. Physical is much better audio/video quality also. 5 megabites per second bitrate for streaming vs 40 for a blu ray and up to 100 for a 4K disc.

I don't understand people who don't own and have no interest in owning CDs. I've always hated listening to music on the radio because they choose the music, not the listener. And I have no interest in hearing "More than a Feeling" for the 1000th time or whatever Foreigner tune they pull out of their bin. I am constantly scouring thrift stores for CDs. $2. Give it a try. Brazilian music, Chinese classical music, some bizarre band that nobody's ever heard of. Choose an album based solely on the cover. But have Sirius XM choose the next song? Pay money to a streaming service so that I can hear the same music I've already got on CD? I will admit, however, that having a streaming service to watch some TV show or some movie that I'm never going to watch again is convenient. I liked watching "Bosch" and "Flying Circus" on Amazon or whatever because I just can't see owning the DVD. Shows and music aren't like music. There's only so many times I can watch something. Black Sabbath or Miles Davis is forever.

I ditched streaming almost a decade ago when they started upping the price and splitting into so many services. I already had a small selection of films and just started using the streaming/cable fee as a base for what to spend each month on new acquisitions. I currently have over 400 dvds (about half tv shows), 100+ Blu-rays, and a slowly growing 4k selection. The best part is you can get an entire show on dvd, and after watching it if you're not going to be watching it again, you can sell it for close to what you paid for it. You can get dvds from goodwill, estate sales, and some thrift stores for around a dollar each. If it's not great, it was a dollar! I reserve Blu-ray/4k purchasing for the great films I already love. Only thing you need to watch for especially on DVDs from the early 2000s is disc rot.

I'd rather go hang out at a used movies/record store, listen to cool music blasting, and buy used Blu-rays for $5-10 (plus, you can keep the money local!). Do the Blu-ray cases take too much room? They can, and you are renting that space in your home each month. Keep the discs in an old school disc folder and ditch the cases. Of course, that becomes it's own problem lol

Reject modernity and embrace tradition. These video streaming services are run by people who hate you and would jump at the chance to erase any record of the way things used to be. Save your $ and start converting your disc based movies to MKV files. You'll be so glad you started that project within a decade.

I've started to build up a collection and I am absolutely all for it. There are so many films that have taken me years to get to because of the abundance of choice i got with Netflix. I now watch films with intention more than i have before in the last 10-12 years and I love it.
I can't really afford to buy physical movies so my current situation is video files but even so, they're still so much higher quality than Netflix has been. I've built up a collection of sci fi and horror movies that I've been wanting to watch for years and have finally gotten to them because my choices are now limited. I've wasted a lot of time just scrolling through netflix for 20-30 minutes before giving up and watching a youtube video, completely missing out on what I wanted to do, which was enjoy a movie.
I have downloaded and watched so many classic movies that I was missing out on in the last 2 weeks, stuff like Scream, The Crow and Friday the 13th, things i should have watched a long time ago.

You can only watch so much with streaming services. That was the main reason why I stopped and canceled my subscriptions.
And the moment paid streaming platforms like Netflix started putting advertisements inbetween your watches, I knew I made the right move.
There are free streaming platforms like Pluto or Tubi and they play advertisements between watches, and I'm fine with that.
The nice thing about physical media is the satisfaction of not only owning what you buy, but the satisfaction of not relying on the Internet when you watch the content. And the DVD/Blu-ray has extra behind the scenes stuff, something streaming platforms do not provide.

with digital, I often start movies and then I have so many other options I can switch to instantly that I often do so bc I am not invested or I don't feel like I will be able to be invested in the film at that time. When you put a tape in, you're going through a ritual that gets you more invested in the experience, and you can't just change what you're watching instantly, so you don't. You look at the box, and read the descriptions and look at the stills, and think about how great the movie will be.
That's really different from digital, where you sorta remember the main premise of the film, and then don't enjoy it, despite there being 100 different great moments that you are not thinking about. I struggle w that when I am watching media I have already seen. Fight Club is highly entertaining, but if I start to stream it, I think about the general story in my head, and then I just find something else.
That problem is even worse with TV shows I have seen. I skip the best episodes sometimes bc I can think of 1 part in my head or I know how it ends.

I was the video buyer for Virgin Megastore in Las Vegas for basically the entire time the store was there (first year I was not a buyer but just a sales clerk).
Every hard to get, high vale sets and copeis, I had in the store. Isles & isles vhs, laserdisc, and dvd's.
I would just spend hours just going through the aisles just looking at different movies I might not have seen or things that I want to see. I miss being able to peruse and go through physical things.
But not only that a lot of things didn't get translated in some special editions of things are just not there. (Like the criterion collection of The Killer).
Also I found that by using digital streaming services you tend to watch the same things over and over you don't really go into the depth of your collection that you would have and just pick out something random or weird or that wouldn't be on streaming (Suicide Circle or Dogma).
NFL known what I know now I would have probably picked up a few things (like any PSOne rpg, or Steel Battalion, The Star Wars Laserdisc collection (best versions released, even over the DVD's).

Personally for me, I would stick to streaming but I think compared to most people, I don’t really have the usual habits most people do. Like I literally never rewatch anything, once I see a movie/TV show, even if it’s my all time favorite in the whole world, I never go back to it. Most people nowadays seem to have “yearly binges” of stuff they watch every single year so for that kind of audience, it totally makes sense to buy once and be able to watch forever even if the cost upfront is so much more. But for someone like me? Why would I ever pay $10-20 for a movie outright only to watch it once and have it sit on a shelf rotting away while I could instead pay the same $10-20, watch at least ~15-25 movies/shows in a month, and have gotten a drastically better value.

I'm with you ! I've been realizing that when I browse on netflix or spotify and even youtube at times.. I get a bit of anxiety and not much excitement, there's too much stuff ! My main problem with streaming services is the whole experience, it's not only about owning that movie...or cd.. it's everything.. I like to browse cds or dvds in places where people sell that stuff, I miss so much the record stores!! even if you don't buy anything.. it's a cool experience, I used to get lost in time just browsing cds and listening to some of the new releases. When it comes to movies, I miss blockbuster, I'm starting to go to the cinema from time to time..but streaming movies..yikes.. it's a waste of life.. Most of the movies I own are not original, however the experience of having 200 hundred movies is less stressing than having a bunch of streaming services trying to get your attention/time. When I put a dvd I do pay attention to the movie, I enjoy it more, it's like spending time in my life.. Streaming services have a weird vibe, kinda like social media..
I think people are going back to physical media or any other option that replaces streaming services, because many many consumers are tired of what they are offering.. or at least I am!! netflix is full of crap.. too many bollywood stuff, so many movies I've already watched.. too much of the same thing.. too much "Noise". It's like people in general, specially after the worlwide thing we went through a few years ago, we are having a growing desire to go back to the life before it... and that's probably one reason why physical media is back, why people are so nostalgic and why anything that involves spending time with people is having so much success.

Physical media is gonna make a huge comeback in a few years, specifically because of the breakthrough that’s been made with disc technology. Some computer scientists figured out a new way to store data on a dvd disc, to where they can store up to 1.6 Petabits of data, or
1,600,000 gigabytes. That’s insane. And it all fits on a dvd sized disc. So, when that tech becomes commercially available, you’ll be able to fit an entire TV series, multiple seasons, on a single disc, with all the extra features you can imagine. And once companies can do that, they’ll do it. Trust me. The reason they don’t really do complete series TV show box sets anymore is because it costs way too much to create new specific packaging, and cases that can hold all the discs. So if companies can put an entire TV Show on a single disc, in a regular Blu Ray sized case, they can actually make profit off of it, and probably more than what they make on streaming services so it will be an exciting opportunity for those companies.

I could go on and on, but all I'll say is I saw the original Alien from 1979 for the first time when it was re-released in theatres a few months back for the 45th anniversary, all its glory on the big screen. Digged the Jerry Goldsmith soundtrack (Which as a Trekkie, well, the likelihood was quite high that I would, yeah.), and now I found them all for dirt cheap on VHS at a sale and watch them on an ancient round screen TV. (Well, maybe. I think the first one will be my favourite, have not even seen the others. Though the fun thing about the franchise is they are kind of all standalone) Life is good.

The dream of the internet and streaming was the preservation and availability of everything everywhere but instead the mechanisms that inform what is available on streaming services has ruined them. Corporations / publishers using their "content" as bargaining chips in a ratrace to sell license packages to the highest bidder which only results in a terribly unpredictable supply for the consumer when the entire point of the model was ease of use and freedom of choice. So much old stuff isn't offered either, or they do offer them but it's some inferior version of the thing you want, or they only offer it partially. It's honestly horrific considering how much cultural momentum has been sucked out of the television and cinema industries, trying to watch certain old shows on streaming services is very hard to do and it almost feels like a deliberate move to obfuscate how crap some of the new stuff is by trying to hide the old stuff as best as possible. The absolute best way to get what you want it to just buy it physically.

I stopped all streaming services and went to discs for the first time in my life last year. I bought like $50K of media (no joke), and I'm very happy, much more than I ever was with streaming. I rip everything though. I won't buy "put it on in the background" shows, so like you, it's always intentional when I watch stuff. Streaming was less special, and it has so many issues. Lower bitrates, only one version or cut, censoring, etc.
I mainly got into this because I have 3 kids and renting over and over isn't cost-effective. Also, they pull good kids shows off streaming all the time! Better to buy, so I don't have to worry about it. My wife likes having everything in one place (Plex), and that means it directly improves my marriage. She also doesn't have to worry about bad stuff because we chose everything my kids have access to.

I haven't watched the whole video yet so you may cover this at some point but I think the idea that it is more expensive is a common misconception. It is more expensive initially but in the long term I think it's cheaper. If I buy a DVD or album today I have that for ever and that cost is now covered. Most people after a certain age stop really seeking out a ton of new music so eventually you kind of have what you want to listen to and don't keep spending the same amount, an album ever 3 or 4 months is much less than the cost of spotify every month so it becomes cheaper eventually. Movies are similar, up front you may spend a lot getting all your favorites and building up a collection but eventually it slows down and your monthly expense becomes less than all the streaming services combined. This math might change if you are the kind of person that feels the need to upgrade every piece of media you own to the newest high quality format that releases.

As far as my music I constantly switch songs going down the road so UA-cam works great for me on music because I can listen to tons and tons of different types of music and songs riding down the road. I'm okay with that because I don't have the money to buy all the music and songs I listen to and also I don't want to risk having a wreck trying to change music going down the road. Because I'm liable to listen to four or five different bands by the time I get from point A to point B on my trip which is not very far. And I don't want to have to be fiddling with a CD. So UA-cam works great in that aspect. But I have to have physical media for my movies and games.
But as far as my movies and video games I have to have physical media.
I'll pass on the VCR tapes. I had hundreds and hundreds of those in the 80s. I don't miss having to take the tape apart and literally having to put like actual Scotch tape on the VCR tape to fix it because the VCR ate the tape just like I don't miss cassette tapes. But I will buy 4K Blu-ray discs. I love the quality and I love the the collectibility of the 4K steelbook. And the same thing with my video games I have to have physical video games I don't do download.
I will buy actual physical video games like PlayStation ECT and 4K Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray steelbook the collector's edition if it's a movie I really want.

I would definitely consider VHS to be a "gimmick."
Cassette tapes for music I would consider less of a gimmick as it's somewhere around 75% of the perceivable sound quality you'd get from CDs, and there's an argument to be made for the "warmth" of tape.
But movies? VHS is worse in every single aspect, particularly in comparison to blu-ray and don't even get me started on how it compares to 4k. (It doesn't.)
Anyway, me, I've been collecting physical media for years, though it's ramped up since 4k has come out, I get every single movie I like in 4k the moment it's released. Fortunately for my wallet, I don't actually like that many movies. I dislike or don't care about most popular stuff, yet my tastes are still "expensive": I like blockbusters like Jurassic Park and Independence Day. I don't care for almost any Bruce Lee movie, but I like half a dozen movies from Jackie Chan, maybe more.
I don't like any mobster movies, and I don't like any movie that doesn't have a happy ending, which removes Heat, Godfather, Goodfellas, _et cetera._
Here's the movies I like: Angels in the Outfield, Arsenic and Old Lace, No Escape, Behind Enemy Lines, Phonebooth and Unleashed.
They're movies with budgets, big-name actors and skilled artists, but they're not movies most people are going to bring up in almost any movie discussion.
Occasionally one of my favorites gets a release on 4k (Ocean's 11, can't believe it didn't get one sooner) but mostly I'm just waiting around.
Happy Gilmore is apparently coming soon to 4k! And with the Sixth Sense and two other M. Night movies, I'm _really_ hoping for a release of The Village in 4k!

I think streaming sucks, just objectively sucks. Most don’t. I don’t really care. Their opinion about what I should do is worthless and meaningless.

I can't believe this isn't a joke or an RLM sketch. You sound like the old hipsters who used to swear that vinyl was the best way to listen to music, that the cracks and pops made it sound more authentic, the way it was meant to be heard, and all the technical hassles were worth it. You're got this adopted nostalgia for a time you missed out on and it's sad, you need to find ways to appreciate your own time. As for media, physical is sometimes worth it but only for special features and commentaries, anything else is so much better stored digitally. You didn't grow up with VHS so you didn't get to use its main function, making your own tapes from free sources or movie channels. That habit extended to some who would also make their own copies of tapes they rented, and then that would translate into the era f ripping dvd's. Sadly, no one thought to preserve all the features and extra people worked so hard to collect before disc rot claimed them, streaming services just have the title itself and you're lucky is the subtitles work correctly. Yes, collect and curate your own collection, but drop this silly love of the boxes and plastic cases and magnetic tape, all that is doomed to die out. Try to preserve value in your own collection, not monetary, but cultural and entertainment value, and for that the dvd era is your golden age. If you're going to be a physical collector, at least make plans to back it up digitally, trust me, you'll be glad you did later on. Dedication of any kind to VHS for any purpose other than making content or turning it into digital is pure vanity.

I get what you’re saying, but especially for old movies/music, they were made with the hardware of its time in mind.
A “worse” experience might very well be more enjoyable in some cases.
As a personal anecdote, recently i watched Phantom Menace on 4k Bluray and was disappointed that i thought the CGI looked realistic 25 years ago. “How could i have been fooled like this, it looks terrible!”
Then i tried watching it on DVD on an old CRT, and it look much better despite the lower resolution (and zoomed in image). The CGI actually looked credible again, because it was meant to be seen on this older lower fidelity hardware. Not on a 55” 4K living room display , it doesn’t hold up to that level of scrutiny and the experience is worse for it

@@cd.knuckles This is especially true for anything sci-fi or basically anything that used a lot of special effects. I watched A New Hope on Disney+ a few months back and it's just not the same as watching the DVDs. Even on a modern TV, the slight blurriness of the DVD bothers me much less than the pixel perfect smoothness of 4k. 4k makes me uncomfortable anyway, I don't entirely know why but i find that extreme amount of detail unnerving.

Why are you buying VHS? its such low quality that they dont even make them anymore. Stranger things and Jaws are still bluray but in VHS packaging for reteo style.
How is you listening to the same songs the fault of spotify? you have access to millions of songs.
Not able to find a movie to watch is a you problem. People nowadays have low attention span and cant try new things. You have more ease of access to movies than any generation before. And yet people are conplaining about this? Place a movie lover from the 80s or 90s to today and theyd be absolutely ecstatic from the cenveience of watching movies.

The whole point is that overconsumption creates diminishing returns, sure I can listen to anything on Spotify but it becomes mindless. As for VHS I lived through it to see the creation of the DVD and it’s just something nostalgic that people find fun, it’s not about getting the best picture quality that’s what 4K is for which is why I use both. At the end of the day if you’re not hurting anyone who cares?

    • @lastguyminn2324
      @lastguyminn2324 6 місяців тому +1

      @TheSkylarDolan
My point is that overconsumption is a choice, and making considered choices from a vast library of options does not diminish that experience. Growing up, I was so frustrated that there was so much music out there that was out of my reach because I couldn't afford to buy everything I wanted. While scarcity did make me cherish what I had all the more, I would NEVER want to return to that era when you would only be able to experience some music if you happened by chance to catch it on the radio or MTV. For a real music afficionado, it really sucked compared to today.
Now I listen to pretty much everything from streaming services (and I have literally thousands of CDs and LPs collecting dust). But I don't listen indiscriminately to whatever some algorithm thinks I like. I curate my own playlists and mostly listen to what I've chosen myself...I just have a much bigger library to choose from than ever before...and I'm no longer stuck listening only at home or to whatever cassettes/discs I have floating around the car. The flexibility, price, quality, and choice are the greatest thing that have ever happened for listeners of recorded music. I don't even miss the liner notes, as all of that information and much, much more is available at my fingertips on the same device as my music plays on!
