    Apple’s recent decision to discontinue the twelve inch MacBook follows in the footsteps of previous decisions to stop making one of Apple’s most popular products. The company announced production of their MacBook would end in July 2019, leaving the MacBook Air the only option for customers looking for a lightweight, entry level Apple notebook. In this video we’re going to explore Apple’s patterns of behavior and find out why they discontinued their 12” MacBook.
    Thanks to MacPaw for sponsoring this video!

      Business marketing 101. The Air name has value to it and the product legacy that Apple users recognize. When you have a loyal long term consumer, niche nuances like that matter. Besides the obvious "Air" name, the original MacBook Air popularized/arguably created the light ultrabook segment. There's a reason why they discontinued the original run of "Macbooks" as the Macbook Air grew to be their best selling computer in the late 2000s and early 2010s.

    • @anshulshah1703
      @anshulshah1703 3 роки тому

      Air is kind of a derogatory term, so they might go for pro since the pro sounds MUCH better than 'Air', kind of how like the XR was called XR, not XS, and than the XS being called XS pro or something like that...

  • @SSubZero
    @SSubZero 4 роки тому +17

    • @kendrajahnea
      @kendrajahnea 3 роки тому +9

      @@ashleybuttafuoco those 2011 laptops were still built horrible and probably didn’t last for more than a couple of years. Most laptops are 500+ dollars for the build quality, specs, and longevity. That’s why macbooks last so long coupled with the fact that other laptops with similar specs are 1500+ dollars. You can still get a competent laptop for 300+ dollars, it’ll just be a bit slow and break easily.

    • @ashleybuttafuoco
      @ashleybuttafuoco 3 роки тому +4

      @@kendrajahnea not really. My $400 laptop right now is the absolute slowest piece of garbage. The only laptops with processors that would be fast enough to do what I want to do are like 600+ dollars, and that’s on the very very cheap side. I used to be able to play Minecraft and Sims at the exact same time on my old laptop years ago, now if I even want to play one I’m completely fucked. I just don’t understand why the cheaper laptops are even on the market when they can’t even open a singular word document without turning into a little potato chip. It’s just really annoying. I wish you didn’t have to spend such high amounts of money to get competent computers. The idea of spending $1000 on a computer is like so completely out of anything I could ever realistically do. And it fucking sucks. :/ (I am not trying to have a pity party, many other people are in the same place as I am. It just sucks yk.)

    It would make sense to offer:
    1. Lightweight, thin, portable 12” MacBook (no “Air” I guess but if with, it’d be okay) with 2 USB-C ports and astonishing 24-hour battery life (I mean video playback as Samsung Galaxy Book S barely has it) built on ARM Processor (like on A10X). And also, butterfly keyboard. Yeah, I said it. I mean, butterfly keyboard but reliable one ofc, with low key travel to produce as I said thin one-plane flat design. And the touch bar and Touch ID. You would buy this laptop for it’s nice compact design to work remotely and have the best battery life from a laptop.
    2. Not so lightweight, not so thin, not so portable but powerful MacBook Pros 13” and 15” with 2 and 4 Thunderbolt USB-C Ports accordingly , scissor-mechanisms keyboard with little more key travel, function (F*) buttons and just Touch ID. Battery life in MacBooks is great (5-8 hours depending on work heaviness) and it lasts pretty good as well, but this machine would be designed as powerful workstation.
    All have best resolution retina p3 wide color gamut support, true tone and etc.

They should have just been priced 699 set it in plastic and go for a huge market share.

    You missed out the 13 inch aluminium MacBook that’s relatively shortlived yet helped discontinued polycarbonate white macbook. The aluminium macbook got bumped to Pro. But I always saw the 12 inch MacBook more to a fashion statement rather than a usable computer (remembering limited hdd space and user replacable parts reduced to non-existance)

    I don't care how much of a panning it gets, I love mine! Super light, great screen, great sound, great battery, backlit keyboard, no fan, large magic touchpad and fits on a plane table. Mine does everything I want it to, but it's an original and there battery needs replacing and the keyboard has a couple of iffy buttons now. So do I get a cheap refurb from Apple, or a new Air? Annoyingly the Air is only 128GB where my MacBook is 256GB

    “Although it did have its fans”
    I’d make a joke here and say it didn’t, and that was one of its bigger problems, CPU’s burning out from constantly switching turbo boost on and off hundreds of times an hour, putting massive thermal stress on the device, ask Louis Rossmann about their reliability.
    Plus, I’m sure someone at apple said “If we updated the specs of the 12”, we’d just have the new MacBook Air we already just released”, and it was killed.

  • @davidfirth1

    I value portability. I had multiple MacBook Air 11" units and owned the 2015 and 2016 MacBook 12" units. The 12" MacBook wasn't as bad as most folks think. The 2016 and 2017 models will do most all productivity and media tasks as their larger cousins, just a bit slower. The screen is gorgeous and worthy of all day use. The keyboard is what it is. My units never gave me much trouble, but lots of folks had and have issues. All this said, when I recently went to get another small/light model for travel, I went back to a 2015 MacBook Air 11" -- the 2015 i7 model is on par, processor wise, with the 2017 MacBook 12" but at a lower price on the online auction market. And non-Retina isn't the end of the world.

    I really wish Apple would further simply their product lineup and their naming conventions for those products... something like:
    iPhone & iPhone Pro (no more Max, XR, XS or whatever)
    iPad & iPad Pro (nor more mini, Air, and so on)
    MacBook (instead of MacBook Air) & MacBook Pro
    Mac (for iMac) & Mac Pro (for iMac Pro or Mac Pro if they really need to continue that model)
    and of course just Apple Watch
    Don't know about the other products though... like HomePod, AirPods and so on. Great products but the naming seems to off most of the time. What do you think?

    Apple should've rebranded the 12" MacBook as a "MacBook Air" model - essentially, the successor to the old 11.6" MacBook Air.
    The real problem, I think: That model was so thin and light, they had designed themselves into a thermal corner, and couldn't really be improved. This was forgivable in the pursuit of the most compact laptop, sure. (As opposed to the trash can Mac Pro!) But there was nowhere else to go with it.
    Anyway, I've got my machine, and love it. I'll be sticking with it for years to come.

    MacBook was an ancient concept, it evolved into MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, so the customers will have an option to both save on a less expansive Air model, or go for the Pro model if you need more power. So yeah, MacBook is just an old model that evolved into something much better.
