    You should learn from your past experiences. Not be controlled by them and held back by them and allow them to define you through the misuse of theoretical psychology.

    Can you answer the following question?
    According to Sigmund Freud, the two unconscious sources of energy that supply fuel to the formation of personality are the ___________.
    Multiple choice answer are:
    Eros and Thanatos
    id and ego
    conscious and unconscious
    conflict and fixation
    Could you explain why you feel that answer is correct?

    • @AmazngSnyderMan
      @AmazngSnyderMan  10 років тому +1

      Well, I would argue that it is id and ego. The id is your innermost desires and primitive aggressions while your ego mediates between your id and superego (which develops in early childhood). The id and ego are unconscious and you are not aware of them.

    • @AmazngSnyderMan

      Look at this video for more on Freud's view of personality formation (spoiler alert: its pretty messed up!) ua-cam.com/video/yIfN362edGE/v-deo.html

    • @mrstc6380
      @mrstc6380 10 років тому +1

      The teacher felt that the correct answer is Thanatos and Eros, though I read several places that said that Freud never made direct reference to those concepts.

    • @alessandrobruinenserio7830
      @alessandrobruinenserio7830 10 років тому +3

      MrsT C If I may, the correct answer is Eros and Thanatos since they are, in his view, the two drives behind the formation of personality and they actually constitute basic, fundamental instincts. These two sources of cognition and behaviour are explicitly mentioned in Beyond the Pleasure Principle as well as in Civilisation and Its Discontents.
      Id, Ego, and Super-Ego are constituent parts of human mind: they are, analytical measures (just like we would define a basketball player by its role/function... although he/she may do other things too; e.g. a point guard can rebound and a PF can play the ball).
      The ego, in Freud's writing, is mostly conscious although, we could say in our days terminology, not entirely aware. It constitutes the most slippery part of his theory of personality because it responds, at the same time, to psycho-genetic and socio-genetic influences. The super-ego is essentially socio-genetic (it corresponds roughly to the rules we internalise and "incorporate", coming from society), while the Id is almost completely unconscious (and to Freud has to remain largely unconscious, which generates the basic mechanism of neurosis). To understand the super-ego and the Id you may want to compare the natural world and human societies (or communities): in nature, for instance, incest is absolutely normal, the boundaries between what is "dirty" and what is "clean" are non-existent. In human societies incest is forbidden and even the mention of it does generate bodily discomfort. The super-ego kicks in and claims that that behaviour is "unnatural" and unacceptable. We would never use our tongue to clean our own genitalia (like many mammals do), because that's just gross and disgusting... again the super-ego exerting control. If we were absolutely unaware of who is our mother/father/sister/brother, incest may happen (and in fact there are several documented cases, especially of father and daughter ending up in bed without knowing they are related).
      Hope I've been helpful. :)

    I think they can test Freud’s ideas. Scientists detected gravitational waves and the freaking Higgs boson. If they spent as much money trying to understand themselves as they do with the physical world…
    In the study of sex, evolutionary psychology has some advanced theories, but the study of the cognitive mechanisms behind sexual behavior are very incipient. Maybe Freud’s ideas can shed some light on them.
