Here on the South African coastline we use rods up to 16ft. A general setup would be 15ft rod with a 7-9oz weight pairing it with a 7500-10500 Penn Slammer 50-80lbs braid main line and a 180lbs braided leader 450lbs full metal jacket trace casting full mackerel as bait and still get a 100-130meter (328-426ft) cast easily. Long rods can cast miles.
In the west coast its a good rod for crab snaring to get past the breakers with out using waders and a good sturgeon rod. I remember seeing the old kencor 15 costing $500. Rather by this rod instead.
I've never targeted flathead catfish, but my buddy and I paired ours with a Battle II 8000, Penn Slammer 10500, Battle III 10000, and Spinfisher 10500. All those are probably overkill as we've caught 100 lb sharks and 300 lb stingrays on them but its always nice having that extra power

It is not a good rod for casting lures that weigh less then 4 ounces but for a bait fisherman it is good for when you have to use heavy weights
