First 60 seconds of this are gold. You've gotta practice tuning to get good at tuning. Would have loved to hear more about Benny's approach to tuning the bass drum and toms. Future vid?

Benny was in New Zealand recently and I managed to get a tunebot readings on his snare drum and 10" tom. These are the tension-rod readings for people who use the tunebot: Sonor Benny Greb 13" Snare: Batter Side TUNEBOT reading = 360hz. Sonor Benny Greb 13" Snare: Resonant Side TUNEBOT reading = About 385-390hz. Sonor Vintage 10" tom = Batterside TUNEBOT Reading = About 300hz-310hz Sonor Vintage 10" tom = Resonant Side TUNEBOT Reading = About 375hz
It's on his DVD, he tunes the batter (emporor coated) at finger tight or just a little less tight than that. The reso( ambassador coated) half a turn tighter and than some cotton within the drum, acting a natural gate. So when the drum is hit it jumps up and you have the full sound of both heads, then it drops and the drum stops.
Benny speaks the Deliberate Practise language. It doesn’t take “years” to get good at X, it takes, in this tuning case, maybe 50 iterations with improvements close to every time. Awesome message, Benny!
Just bought the Remo drum key, nice plug. As a noob drummer but long time guitar player this video was great and reassuring. You defiantly can practice tuning. Its all about developing patience and your ears, but really your mind. Thanks!!
I was always under the impression to have the head tuned evenly at each lug otherwise you run the risk of the head breaking... I live and learn.. Thanks Benny.
The tips about practicing tuning are right on. It takes experience, lots of it. A TuneBot can help a lot on the learning curve. I've come to the conclusion that nobody can teach tuning well - I followed all sorts of guides and videos and got consistently mediocre results until I got a TuneBot and started experimenting a lot. Now I can tune well without the TB if I need to, but I still get better results with it.
From working in drum shops most of my life and recording studios - i've tuned so many drums by now i think from Benny's opening speech, i have tuned enough drums to have done it for the next several generations of my family bloodline hahaha!!! :D
My first set were REMO..IN 1965..BLUE SPARKLE i was 10 years old played them 1969..then got a used set of ludwig's they were awesome.got my last set in 84 they are the white ludwig's double bass with over sized toms.ive added a lot to them spent lots of money on them they sound like a million bucks..i don't play as much as i used to but i can still play..i regret selling my REMO's they did sound great..i have Remo rockers on all of my drums they sound great too..REMO makes the best sounding heads I've ever used and I've used about every brand made and always go back to REMO for the best sound..thanks Remo..Cheers everybody 🍻🍻🍻🍻
I use a torque gun, TubeBot with an interval of fourths (higher on resonance side) and tweak it with a key. Note! DW has the 50 thread lug bolts which are super smooth so it’s easy to high torque when you don’t want to. Thanks for the tips Benny.
I usually tune all drums on my kit with a drill. I simply don't have the time to do it by hand & it sounds amazing. For gigs I usually carry even two drilling machines with me, cause its even more faster. Sounds perfect.
Not to take anything from Remo but the Benny Greb snare has something to do with it. I have several snare drums, (DW and two Craviottos), and picked up Benny's signature snare a few weeks ago. I tried several different Remo heads on it and can say for that snare drum the Ambassador definitely produced the best results. The combination of that drum and the Ambassador head makes it a very versatile snare more so than on any of my other snare drums.
I dig ya Benny, but we all know that was just a commercial. I don't really hate that, because 🔊 I LOVE GEAR!. 😊😄😃😍 ... That was a good point on the whole "finger tightening tuning key" thing. I don't find tuning particularly hard, but I think my least favorite thing about it is trying to tighten the rods with your fargen fingers!. I might actually buy a couple of those.
got dudes autograph at a drum clinic at sam ash about 10 years ago. btw he was great playing with a Phil Rudd signature snare. Half way in one of his inverted 6 in splashes flew of the kit and he didn't skip a beat.
Benny nice job on the tips I'll try the turn two lugs trick on the snare it sounds interesting. Gotta retire my Ludwig key and get a Remo one thanks for that tip.
Wait a minute Benny talks about the P3. But I think that was a P4 on his kick. Or something similar, wasn't a P3. Unless somethings going on? Great video loved the intro.
A very rarely seen head. I have a renaissance snareside head. If that is anything to go on the p3 renaissance is totally different from the regular coated. Warmer and softer. And... more expensive 😂👍
Not if you do it for short periods of time, let's say a recording session or a song or two. After you're done playing you should set every screw to the same tension (or as close as possible) to avoid damage.
Tuning your snare drum like that will gradually make the shell become out of round. Just tune the head evenly all around and it’ll sound good and not ruin your drums.
Don't over complicate the process: Nice tight bottom head for the snare, make sure your heads are evenly tightened around the rim by tapping for tones, and see where your drums like to resonate.
I use a very small (non-powerful) rechargeable drill and set the torque to 1. Then after I tighten all the lugs I know that they will all be tightened evenly all around.
I'm "always" detunig my heads & returning them just about everytime I sit behind em? I been playing so long my ears just notice anything out of tune, its just something I do...
The trick to learning is repetition with breaks. Just doing it over and over won't have the same effect as leaving it a day then coming back to it... no short cuts x
Interesting, you can see the snare head wrinkling when he loosens those two tension rods. The wrinkles go away when he cranks them back up again. I don't think I want to do this.
I'll always advise that the best way to tune is to use a tuning device that measures the pitch at each lug. The same way professional musicians tune every other instrument on the planet.
First 60 seconds of this are gold. You've gotta practice tuning to get good at tuning. Would have loved to hear more about Benny's approach to tuning the bass drum and toms. Future vid?
Buy his DVDs. It's all there.

Glad to see how far y'all have come over the years!

Sonor Benny Greb 13" Snare: Batter Side TUNEBOT reading = 360hz.

Sonor Vintage 10" tom = Resonant Side TUNEBOT Reading = About 375hz
The 10" tom it's tuned so high?
He's using a major third interval between the batter and reso (reso = batter * 1.25).
Woah... I had no idea that the Remo drum key had those features! Thanks for the great video.
*gets Benny grab to talk tuning*
*no floor tom tuning info*
*cries*
buy the DVD :)
I met him once. He said : just barely above fingertight. The sound engineer has close to nothing to do with the mixing of the Tom.
He seems like the sort of dude who'd say "your floor tom doesn't sound like a kick drum, the hell are you doing?"
He uses Remo Coated Emperors on both the top & BOTTOM (based on his Hong Kong tour vid) and puts in 5-6 cotton balls.
@KenjoMendez not exactly. Ambassador coated on the bottom
DUDE!!! @1:26 The coolest tuning tip, I have ever seen!!! thank you so much for this info!!! Let's JAM to everything!
Great tips, thanks Benny? But how do you tune your floor tom!?
no..you're a floor tom
It's on his DVD, he tunes the batter (emporor coated) at finger tight or just a little less tight than that. The reso( ambassador coated) half a turn tighter and than some cotton within the drum, acting a natural gate. Really? Ö
TheZooNinjaS which dvd?? I got to warch it man
@@dwiatmaputra
I think he only has two DVDs, "The Art And Science Of Groove" and "Benny Greb The Language of drumming". It probably on one of those.
THIS IS THE ABSOLUTE BEST 5 minutes....THANK YOU so much Benny...
I hate being influenced by advertisment but damn I'm going to get an Ambassador Coated
It's a versatile head man. Are you enjoying it?
Did the same on an Evans Hidraulic and sounds amazing
GREB FLOOR TOM TUNING!! THAT'S ALL I NEEEEEEEED
finger tight top and bottom loose cottom balls on reso head inside then tune up the batter to taste
Benny speaks the Deliberate Practise language. It doesn’t take “years” to get good at X, it takes, in this tuning case, maybe 50 iterations with improvements close to every time. Awesome message, Benny!
Speech at the beginning about tuning practice and the speech at the end about dampening possibilities are helpful.
Just bought the Remo drum key, nice plug. As a noob drummer but long time guitar player this video was great and reassuring. You defiantly can practice tuning. Its all about developing patience and your ears, but really your mind. Thanks!!

That's the best drum tuning video ever made!!
Glad you think so!
Mr. Greb, although bearded but not coated, a true Ambassador for REMO!

Can’t stress how helpful this video was
Benny is the man! Thank you for this video. I think I'm good at tuning, but I can always pick up a nugget or two from a video like this!
Tried with my wallet but dampening was very soft. Does it mean I'm broke?..
Haha ! Only if you bought that kit and cymbal setup
Dont remind me that I'm broke damn it lmao
Where’s that floor Tom tip!? Lol

Great video Benny, thanks for that, makes a lot of sense ! 👍
I love this guy!
I love the ambassador head for my snare!! Also, Ben is amazing🔥
I love the first minute...good spirit!
Thanks
Great approach and so inspiring. Thanks Benny, thanks Remo.
awesome tips
Glad you like them!
I"d like to see you tuning the toms, in particular the floor tom, I've read that you use cotton balls to reduce the ring...
I dig ya Benny, but we all know that was just a commercial. I don't really hate that, because 🔊 I LOVE GEAR!. 😊😄😃😍 ...

Benny is a great human
Benny nice job on the tips I'll try the turn two lugs trick on the snare it sounds interesting. Gotta retire my Ludwig key and get a Remo one thanks for that tip.
this snare head sound amazing wow
First tip (Ambassador coated on the snare) will bend the hoops if they are light. I've seen it happening a lot of times.
The video awesome and all, and benny impeccable as always, but the crack on freakin benny’s signature snare drum is IT !!
Benny once again smashes another nonsense old-school drummer myth with a truth bomb of logic.
Knowledge is power.
Bam!
I practiced tuning right away!
More videos like this one please!
The sound is simply amazing!
Wait a minute Benny talks about the P3. But I think that was a P4 on his kick. Or something similar, wasn't a P3. Unless somethings going on? Great video loved the intro.
Gethin Jones it’s a P3 Renaissance
I was going to post the same thing. What kind of P3 is that? Smooth/suede or renaissance?
Indeed, this is a P3 Renaissance!
A very rarely seen head. I have a renaissance snareside head. If that is anything to go on the p3 renaissance is totally different from the regular coated. Warmer and softer. And... more expensive 😂👍
So loosening the two screws closest to you, does that not warp or bend the hoop?
Not if you do it for short periods of time, let's say a recording session or a song or two. After you're done playing you should set every screw to the same tension (or as close as possible) to avoid damage.
Great! More tom tuning please!
Is that a 20" bass?
Excelente vídeo bro !!
It's the master himself! Tell him I said hello!
WOW!! how can I get the second fat low sound of the bassdrum ???? I'd like to get the building down :))
Nice kit, may I ask what are the sizes on this kit?
Would you recommend to tune the same head over and over again or do I need fresh ones everytime?
Besides the great tips and signature snare drum, what is the brand, specs and finish of the drums? Looks like white marine pearl and is beautiful.
Bruce Mallatratt it's the Sonor Vintage Series. He, Steve Smith, and Tomas Haake did promotional videos for them, check them out.
1:27 I don't have to do that: my snare does it on its own!
Love this guy
WOW your my favorit drummer thank so much for thees tips
Great drummer and teacher. Benny Greb is so inspiring. But I really really want to hear him say "Get to the Choppa" ... bucket list for me
but what about..... EVEN ***MORE*** gaffer tape?!?!
Just play a gaffer tape drumhead.
Gaffer tape better head
Gaffer tape snareside
Gaffer tape wires
Is there anyone who knows which clamp he uses on bassdrumhoop to mount his xhat, what brand?
This was informative
Make the same video with drummers from all genres! And with some toms!!!
1:41 my friend that's all you need !
You are a freakin’ Genius. D A N K E 🤩😎DANONDRUMS MESA az
Nice! Thank you
Welcome!
love the guy a lot!
Ok, now release the other video where Benny goes deep into explaining the 4 different bass drums, how he tunes them and muffles them.
How to get the second sound from a kick drum?
What tom heads does he use though?
Look how Rob Brown tunes his drumset. Fast ( very fast ) easy and efficient.
Sounds great.
great tips
My second drum kit was a seven piece... My dad had years of tuning experience.
Is it CRS that I see on the cymbal stands?
Tuning your snare drum like that will gradually make the shell become out of round. Just tune the head evenly all around and it’ll sound good and not ruin your drums.
I would imagine so as well...
Nathan Teed correcting The Greb??
It's a nice trick to know, but yeah, it could 'un-round' the shell. Just tune it evenly all around and then use dampers, like in his last tip.
@@trismurray Not even that. Just kind of common sense of how it can damage the snare.
I think it could bend the hoop but not the shell, could be best to turn the hoop a quarter turn every once in a while
where can i get those cases?
Don't over complicate the process: Nice tight bottom head for the snare, make sure your heads are evenly tightened around the rim by tapping for tones, and see where your drums like to resonate.
THANKS!
Looks like the bass drum head is a P4 not a P3...i only find the powerstroke 3 with the Control ring. Can someone hep me please!
So he doesn’t use the cross pattern to tune? Doesn’t that mess up the heads? I’m no tuner but I thought that was the first rule
I think benny might actually be in love with emperor coateds
Brother you look so good in this video! Nice jacket * beanie
Go and listen Toto - Hydra! Theare the super rock-disco sound you truly need. Jeff Porcaro - is the MAN!
I fucking love Benny
I use a very small (non-powerful) rechargeable drill and set the torque to 1. Then after I tighten all the lugs I know that they will all be tightened evenly all around.
Dangit! I just bought an emperor, now i want a powerstroke😡
I'm "always" detunig my heads & returning them just about everytime I sit behind em? I been playing so long my ears just notice anything out of tune, its just something I do...
How to warp your drum hoops 101. Haha, but seriously, good stuff. :)
just rotate them each time you retune :)
Smooth, suede or renaissance P3?
The trick to learning is repetition with breaks. Just doing it over and over won't have the same effect as leaving it a day then coming back to it... no short cuts x
Interesting, you can see the snare head wrinkling when he loosens those two tension rods. The wrinkles go away when he cranks them back up again. I don't think I want to do this.
Great!
I'm gonna need that Key..
I'll always advise that the best way to tune is to use a tuning device that measures the pitch at each lug. The same way professional musicians tune every other instrument on the planet.
Which heads on the toms? His toms sounds amazing, also ambassadors? Or emperor coated? He didnt tell nothing about the toms!
Sergio,
Thanks for your comments!
The tom heads being used in this video are Emperor Coated on top and Ambassador Coated on the bottom.
Remo Inc ok! Thank you! Love the coated emperors! I tried the vintage coated emperors and they are amazing!
GREBFRUUUUUIIIITTT
I put my cell phone on the snare drum and I get lot of ringing and overtones lol
Common sense all the way with this guy..It's as simple as that. Tune bots are for ppl with ocd
