- I often get asked about this effect i use to change the pitch of my Floor Tom during my Solo.
In Canada at the Ralph Angelilo International DrumFestival, the camera caught my answer to it. I also explain other ways how to change the pitch of drums to create different sounds on the Drumset. Enjoy!

I will pay to watch his stand-up comedy if there is one
😂😂 Absolutely! Comedy Central needs to hook him up.
Hey did you hear the one about the drummer who locked his keys in his car?......
It took him three hours to get the bass player out. *ba dum tss*
Two-man show with Beardyman.
It's gotta be better than Fred Armisen's
Me too
He's got a great sense of humor.
All these people saying "He wasn't the first"
Well I didn't hear him say he was the first anywhere in the video at all. Simply explains his thought process behind changing the pitch while playing.
Drum comedy standup? new category?
Michael H Fred Armisen tried it. It sucked
@@tylerspatafore9315 thats because Fred Armisen literally sucks
@@tylerspatafore9315 I literally came here to make this comment. Way to beat me to it
This is a cool effect, but when you hear It live it is really incredible. I was at the clinic in Portsmouth NH (USA) where Benny did this and also explained the technique. Yet another innovative idea from a master musician.
Yooo I heard about that and I totally should’ve gone!!
You legend! I'm sure everybody would like to see more of you on UA-cam! Keep it coming :-)
Thank you for saying that, I will definitely be more active in the future here.
@@bennygrebofficial Awesome!
Benny vs The Sound Guy again!!!
You are a legend!! And your humour is amazing! To do that is not easy...probably harder than playing drums!😁
This comedian is a pretty good drummer. I hope he sticks with it.
Looking forward to see your next stand up show at Hafenbahnhof when you get back home. I'll be looking out for you....! ;)
I just hired a intern to blow on my floor tom when I need to change the pitch. She charges by the song, 5 songs minimum.
Magician.
His "hand" drumming far exceeds my "stick" drumming. Makes me wonder if I should stop using sticks altogether, or take up a different hobby.
Benny Greb...great drummer, great guy!!!😎👍
Excellent teacher!
Benny is a beast on la batería. Incredible work with Nick Johnston. His books are wonderful resources as well.
I did this in the 80's using plastic 1/4" tygon tubing. Kind of like a Roger Troutman thing, but on the drums... It was a pretty cool effect!
Benny is Amazing and Funny
I saw a Drummer in the early 70’s do it with Tube and also pitch bend it with his foot this is where I got the Idea from!
Benny’s is definitely the Funniest Version
I love the creativity :-)
His creativity is far beyond 90% of most drummers. We see a 4pc kit, he see's God knows what 🥁
Benny always made my day... :D
Genial, Benny :D Gern mehr davon!
Como amo a este sujeto 💙
Estoy enamorada de este hombre.
Awesome! Let’s see 🔥 trick too
some ppl want to see the world burn :-)
well now we need to know about foot technique
Jojo mayer have an amazing dvd
im pretty sure gavin harrison has done it in the past, when he played on letterman's for example
omg, that drumkit !!!
He can also do stand up comedy...
Awesome 🔥 Saw Allison Miller do something similar using some kind of tube (like the one on a talkbox?) cool stuff!
Yeah I’ve done it before with rubber tubing from a hardware store. You just need to carefully measure the vent hole on your tom. The one thing is that the condensation from your breath can build up and drip into the drum which might not be great for it.
Gavan Borgias Fantastic! maybe I’ll give it a go sometime myself.
Now we see how loose the floor tom head is, barely any tension on it!
yeah he talks about tuning in his Art and Science of Groove DVD. The floor tom is just slightly above finger tight.
You're a true inventionist
Every drummer is a comedian
Such a cool dude....
Saw Stanton Moore do this at a Galactic show back in the late 90s or early 00s with a tube. My worry was of a massive humidity concern to bare wood inside over a long time doing it... moisture wouldn't necessarily be able to escape too well I figured.
Don't need to worry about that for guys like Stanton Moore. They change drum heads all the time... Not because of wear and tear, but because they're all sound geeks.
I saw Stanton Moore do this with a tube at a Galactic show in 1996. Pretty cool effect.
Wasn't Glenn Kotche doing this as well? I think he's the first person I saw do this with a tube.
@@fubar1217 Yeah I've seen him do it as well.
the first two maneuvers with the drums he got from Papa Joe Jones and Sam Woodyard.
Surgical tubing fits into the air vent. Just blow into it. A foot pump can also be attached to the tubing.
Benny’s the coolest drummer on the planet..!!!!!
Roy Brooks did similar things with a self fashioned hose decades ago
Glen Koche uses a tube as well to achieve this. Though I gotta say that Benny's way of doing it is much more entertaining. It's like floor tom CPR lol
My drum teacher in the 80’s had tubing stuck in vent hole of aux floor Tom and would do this.
Would be the perfect kind of drummer I'd want to be very relaxed and that's when you have your best ramen in articulation is when you really relaxed
I've seen other people hook up a tube to the floor tom vent to blow into from the seated position. Have you tried this?
Edward Brown could even attach it to a foot pump and not have to use the mouth or hands
So while you're playing you move your foot up against the bottom of the floor tom?
Is it possible to know exactly which bass drumheads thoose are?
Batter powerstroke 3 renaissance?
Reso single ply?
He's a god, but I've seen the air trick made by Gavin Harrison in a slightly more confortable way
Slightly? You mean a lot more?
Alan White of Yes did that with air lines
where can I watch the full video of this????
great and funny
I now need an assistant to blow into my floor tom to change pitch whilst gigging...and I thought I was all set up...🥁🤪 Hang on though....what if I placed a tube into the aperture in the side of the floor tom attached to a foot pump....🤔
Yes man! :-D
Interesting
the best drummer world
David Lee Roth and Alex Van Halen used to use a ‘tube into the tom’ trick in their early club shows.
Easier way is to buy a 4-5 foot length of tube from the hardware store, insert into floor tom vent hole, place other end in mouth. Then you can use two hands to play and add air into drum, thus raising the pitch. Maybe I'll make a video on it sometime.
What about a bellows controlled by your foot so you can get even more pressure?
latemnf another great idea! I find that there’s only so much higher in pitch it will go with blowing air into it before the head can’t stretch anymore. Plus, the plastic tube fits easily in my stick bag and I already have enough to load in/out as it is.
@@funkdrummer Ahha... then your feet are free for bass drum and hat playing...this could work...
@@conradmason87 It not only can work, but has worked. I've used the tube technique in live settings before.
Benny FTW
He's hilarious.
Benny Greb is Really Funny✌️.
Benny's funny man
I love you
крутой чувак: шутеечки, техника, просто речь - все охуенно)
do you risk rupturing your lungs if you hit it too hard while blowing? I've heard of people bursting a lung while inhaling directly from helium tanks and it seems like the shockwave from hitting the head hard might do similar damage
wow .....it seems i do live more dangerously than i thought
@@bennygrebofficial lol you have one of the best sounding "death machines" I've heard
Benny kills me
Not sure who did it first but I think I’ve seen Gavin Harrison do this many years ago
Referência total
Benny, Du verrückter Hund! Jetzt will ich wissen, ob ich das auf den Bass übertragen kann! Wenigstens beim Kontra muss das doch gehen! Moment... Cheerio aus Eimsbusch!
So that one time, at band camp...
Benny blew it at the festival loll
His groove is tasty even when he demonstrates.... crazy
Hmmm... This gives me new ideas! Anyone ever tried attaching a bicycle pump to a drum pedal?
Oooh what's the foot technique?!!
Joe Doyle - Maybe this? ua-cam.com/video/Y_ZmFFjRCWY/v-deo.html
benny can you make a tutorial video of your floor Tom?🙈
He covers how he tunes his drums (including the coveted Benny Greb floor tom) in his DVD The Art and Science of Groove. Absolutely a MUST have!
I love Benny but he wasn't the first. I did it in the 90's after seeing someone else do it with surgical or fish tank tubing.
Oh my, it's almost as if playing music is some type of competition.
He didn't set them on fire - only because there wasn't enough time.
Toll !
You'd think he has thee kids with those dad jokes.
Nice haircut Benny.
yeah , me and the soundguy go to the same barber
Benny Greb you’re hilarious 😂🤣
@@bennygrebofficial If you come to Istanbul (again), i got great places for you to go. (for haircut). See you then.
You have a 'bright' future, i can see.
Gavin Harrison has been doing that for a long time...
Idea.. a simple foot pump from air mattress & tube into air hole 👌🏼 Oh & gaff
Sydney Drums.. thought of that but hit a snag when trying to feed air into floor tom and play bass drum and hi-hats at the same time... it's back to the drawing board for me.
I bet the sound check guy plays the bass. Hahahahaha I love that joke. Always works no matter what situation.
This isn't new...but I still LOVE BG.
Helium would be more fun!
Now if only he would reveal how he *tunes* the floor tom...
fyi on my DVD the Art and Science of Groove - there is a 20min segment on this. :-) go to bennygreb.com
Oh good gravy I need that DVD.
@@BionicleSaurus yes, you do need it! Benny also did a free lesson on Drumeo covering a some of the topics from his DVD, so you can check this out while you wait for the DVD to arrive. 😉

I have no idea wtf just happend...
Nothing really new, look up "Gaven Harrison - The Chicken" he does this exact thing in a much more comfortable way.
He explains the set up in his King Crimson tour kit video. It's still cool to see other drummers doing it too, though.
He's fucking tall
Why were you in such a hurry?? 😂
I believe he only had 15 minutes left of the drum clinic. He wanted to show this to the crowd and had to hurry. Besides we only saw 4 out of the 15 minutes, who knows what else he wanted to show.
YES.
SET THE BASS DRUM MIC ON FIRE.
I WILL TURN MY BROKEN D112 INTO A PYROTECHNIC DEVICE WHICH EMITS COLOURED SMOKE AND FIRE IF YOU SEND IT PHANTOM POWER.
YES.
I wil also put a samsung logo on it.
Because YES.
And Grenfell.
he sure is fun and good, but did you know that the dutch drummer Pierre Courbois already used this tom trick by blowing air through a tube, while playing, in 1977; check his interview video at 20.15 minutes: ua-cam.com/video/AKncrXXfbc0/v-deo.html
Pep Guardiola play drums ?
Not the first to do this.
I don't think anyone said he was
I don't think I want to do that. lol

I wonder what the 47 morons that gave him a "Thumb down" had for breakfast, over the last 10 years.....Benny Greb is a genius...Ende aus, Mickey Mouse.....it´s probable just envy....in wich case, have something else for breakfast....Maybe Eggs, Beans and Bacon.......
Well, that was a big waste of time..
less funny more drum please...
Totally pointless
