Excellent performance. This two women are so emotional. I like that!

Brava Galvany and Putman. This is an outstanding confrontation scene from a GREAT opera. Are there more excerpts from this performance?

There is a full "Jenufa" with her on here. She did Jenufa at Covent Garden, Arabella at Glyndebourne (on dvd), and a Fiordiligi in English for BBC. I am sure she did something else but can't think of it. She was beautiful, charming on stage, and could SING!!! She was kinda nervous before a show but she warmed up quick. Galvany is just GRAND!!! Both are so underrated!!!

I have a two-CD set of this performance -NYC Opera March 22, 1982. In better sound than this video clip. Galvany is fabulous, as is Putnam.

WOW... Never heard Putnam sing before...so thanks for the footage. Galvany is as thrilling as Putnam is rivetting. Galvany had an E flat back then, so I often wondered what it would be for this type of soprano/soprano match up why they both don't finish on the E flat....

Hello Operabuff! Do you remember in that very season at NYCO Grace Bumbry's Abigaille? A bit scarey, but still amazing, as Grace always was

This is a very good performance, and it is a D not an E (this can be heard in the finale with singers such as Beverly, Edita,Devia, etc)

What a monumental lash-up this is! lacking dynamics and wandering over the place with the tempo and finding its way back again by accident. Bravo to the singers here for managing to cope with it so well. I should think the lasting impression of this performance was the sound of Donizetti turning in his grave

LOL, Mary Stuart wasn't a redhead. But WOW, the singing! BRAVA!

This is not a bad staging, it is no staging at all. But the musical side is worse. What a pity, with such singing actresses at their disposal, that nobody on the musical staff of the NYCO bothered to compare editions and sources, or that matter, even to do what's written. Wrong rhythms, wrong dynamics, wrong phrasing. Donizetti was always very clear about what he wanted. Take a look at the score.
