FIERCE!!!! This woman was a tremendous singing actress...she never let up during the entire scene...I mean, all of the breaths had dramatic intent, even. I was checking her out at the end of the aria with the chorus going, etc. Many artists take that time to chill out, coast and save themselves for the big high note at the end. Not Beverly!!! She took 1 measure to swallow and then came right back in, almost as if Donizetti wrote it that way, capping with a stellar High D at the end. FIERCE!!!
She is just extraordinary. Not just the singing, the voice, the pitch, the acting - but singing the last part of the aria while leaning back in a chair. That is so difficult to do, because you cannot really get your air underneath you, and yet there she is, just rockin' it out!
J'ai toujours été fidèlement fan de cette cantatrice et de plus pouvoir la voir ici me renforce dans mon admiration.. quelle grande comédienne.. on oublie qu'elle chante un rôle.. magnifique, madame, vous êtes irremplaçable.
I am so glad I looked this up. I heard her sing it live and I was still sitting in my seat at the end unable to move when almost everyone else had left the theater. Tears filled my eyes now as they did then. I have not heard this since that time. Thanks for posting!
This is the best rendition of this opera!!! And this is Opera!! ACTING AND EXPRESSING WITH THE VOICE!! And not just singing beautifully without any feelings like many Singers now! BRAVA BEVERLY SILLS!
Absolutely legendary! Despite her somewhat widened vibrato in 1975, she still had a fantastic voice, a lyric coloratura voice with tremendous dramatic power and amazing versatility. She gave her all, going down to those effective chest notes and then ascending to her accurate, bright top. Besides, no one can deny: her despair, remorse, sadness is visible and very haunting, one can feel all the complex emotions of Elisabetta. A once-in-a-century interpretation!
I saw her do this opera at Wolf Trap. She was amazing. She is on stage and singing this entire last scene. She must have been completely exhausted. I saw her and Mrs. Shouse in a golf cart on the way to Mrs. Shouse's estate and the whole parking lot screamed and applauded.
I absolutely LOVE Sills in this role (and any other role for that matter). She is by far the best Queen Elizabeth I've heard! The really unique thing is that probably the role actually demands a heavier, darker voice than Sills, whose lyric coloratura was probably lighter than one would think this role needs. And yet, Sills was SUCH an artist, both musically and dramatically, that she knew exactly how to make it work, so that her Elizabeth was utter perfection! BRAVA!!!
Quale intensità! E che dire del fraseggio e della dizione. Assolutamente comprensibile e limpido, a differenza di molte altre cantanti straniere. Stupenda
This is unforgettable performance, one of the most amazing and moving artistic depictions of mourning, guilt and pain I've ever seen. The perfect combination of music and theater creating something incredibly powerful!
A very great portrayal by one of the most inspiring singers of the 20th Century. Total dedication to the music, the text, the character - a complete interpretation which no doubt shortened her career a little, but she had the right to choose and the audience responded well to this performance. Her understanding of Donizetti saw her through.
Sills's Quel Sangue Versato is heartbreaking. Sills brings out all the emotions and power required and demanded of this emotionally and technically difficult role.
For years I was deeply moved by Bette Davis playing this queen role in the 1939 film with Errol Flynn. Beverly's singing and acting of the finale just rips me up!
She amped up her voice for this didn't she. She is singing like a Wagnerian soprano in this, and she is sangin the dickens out of it to. Just marvelous.
Jose Hill ...she did. And did it wonderfully. Unfortunately, she has said that doing this role took 10 years off of her singing career. But she said it was worth it.
Beverly Sills sang this roles so fantastic....I missed her singing and bravo to her for giving back in her funding raisiing awareness to disables children....

The greatest of all Elizabeth. A true artist in all facets. I was privileged to have seen her multiple times on stage and NEVER was disappointed. She was the ULTIMATE!
I saw this perfomance when it was first telecast during the 1970's. I now own the dvd of the production. I thought then, and I think now, that it is the greatest operatic perfomance by a soprano that I have ever seen. Sills is brilliant in the role. Her singing is magnificent and her acting is superb. She owns this role.
This is probably her greatest role. Her voice is too thin, too light, and too small for this repertoire, but she was so musical and so intelligent that she managed to pull off a heartbreaking interpretation, knowing full well it would ultimately destroy her delicate instrument. Yesterday, I watched Sondra Radvonovsky's version, which is sung with a voice much more suited to this role (minus the labored coloratura), but she didn't make a tenth of the impact Sills does. I have always wondered what Callas would have done with this role before 1955.
Callas’ never tackling this role is probably what bumps me up the most in reference to the roles she never went on to sing. Nowadays Marina Rebeka could potentially give a much more greater justice to the role than Sondra for whom belcanto has never truly worked well…
@@spyridonroumeliotis7831 I too have felt Sondra was much more of a late Verdi and Puccini singer than bel canto. Although I don’t think Sondra could ever have a voice colored in the way the one of Callas was and certainly not capable of the electrifying effect Callas gives you even by listening to any of her Medea recordings (especially the Florence, Scala and the Dallas one). For me Sondra has a big voice that under certain circumstances generates an imposing effect within a specific pool of roles, and that makes her a great artist.
@@spyridonroumeliotis7831 I think the want of a great chest register was the greatest detriment to her Medea. Callas's assumption will remain untouchable.
