You are my hero for doing this. As someone who is curious about VA monitors but never used one, most reviews don't do a great job of conveying what smearing actually looks like. I wish people would just point a camera at the screen and demonstrate what smearing looks like in an actual game and what the worst case scenario looks like! I would actually feel confident buying the G7 seeing that its ghosting is not so bad.
this is the kind of review style I love, so professional and clean, instant subs !!!
I never comment that much but you're so undervalued.
Your reviews are so detailed and structured, good that you test them in the same environments in different video's.
Great review! Your content is getting really good
Thanks for your support Kurt!
How you have only 1K subscribers is beyond me. Your reviews rock!
Because majority of the people are stupid.
Thank you so much for this review. I only have a 400:1 contrast ISP and a mediocre VA panel and was trying to decide if my next upgrade was going to be literally either of these. I was mostly scared that going back from VA to ISP would be terrible for contrast, but this seems way better these days then with my current shitty IPS panel. Not at all worried and went for the LG, thanks!
Having them side by side with an actual camera helps so much with spotting differences rather than looking at professionally measured contrast for example which doesn't really tell you what it might look like.
You made a good choice with the LG IPS.
This is legit insanely good content. I hope you succeed with algorithm instead of clickbait low effort flashy reviews
Thank you for the in depth with no nonsense review!
Instant sub from me. And I recently bought an LG monitor. Saved up 200 bucks after seeing your review
I have a G7 and I haven’t noticed it was a VA until this video, thanks!
Superb commentary, a pleasure to listen to, fast and to the point, precise use of the English language, thank you.
Glad you liked it!
Great review and honest. You got the sub man
Fantastic review! Keep it up.
Agian thank you for making this type of video it really helped .
Great review. SUBBED!
I've been having the 32" G7 for a few months now and I was curious to see what you had to say about it. I'm mostly happy with it. It does have a few weird issues, but nothing major. I will probably stick with it for a while. I'm hoping monitors get mini led panels eventually.
Can you write about these weird issues?
Best review I've probably ever seen
You deserve more subscribers.
That's what I was looking for.
thanks! very good videos and reviews :)
The Black level comparison video side by side... I honestly couldnt tell the contrast difference between the monitors. Both dark level look normal/great to me lol I thought it would look more greyish on the LG
Super content! Thank you buddy, I will buy the LG.
This seems like a better and more honest review than your first video...
Glad you found it more honest. I will continue to improve. Thanks for the feedback.
In this 30 years of my PC crusade I had a lot of monitors, IPS, TN, VA... and now I'm using Philips 165Hz 32" VA panel. And yes, it has smearing but I'm not annoyed about that. In most games smearing isn't so noticeable - only if you are looking maniacally for that. What I like and prefer over other monitors are really deeper blacks and non-existence of GLOWING of IPS (you forget to mention that) and, the most important: richer colors and saturation. VA panels (especially Philips' ones) are capable of more warmer, vivid colors and better contrast and that's game changer for me.
Very good and informative review.
Good review.. Now I have clear understanding which 1 to get...and LG is my choice too.. thank you * add to cart
why don't va panels stop this curved thing... so bad
Шикарный обзор, то что искал.
You've hit a niche with this comparison. I bet future VA models from other companies besides Samsung will still not be as fast as Odyssey, yet I am still surprised it's slower than ips. I hope some day we will be able to choose exactly the features we want when buying a monitor, without the disadvantages. If not for the bleeding I'd only use ips. Thank you for making this
Slower than the ips? are you dreaming. The g7 is of the fastest panel for its price. even beating some TN panels
Dude It is impossible :D I subscribed you like 8 hours ago cause I loved your monitors VA vs IPS review. Lately I have been wondering what monitor should I buy cause I wanna change the one I am currently using - LG 850, Dell 2721DGF or this G7, and you gave me the review of two of them. Wtf :D
Is lg 850 good?
Welcome fam! Hope this video helped you with your purchase!
@@ReviewsForLifeYT haven't bought it yet, will buy it in a day or two, now m confused between this and asus vg27ql1a, any HELP?
@@_rahulsharma_ I got both the LG850 and the G7 32". Colors on the G7 VA panel are amazing. Really close to the colors on the LG850. Whites are bit more yellow because the G7 has a VA panel, but overall I like the G7 a lot more. My LG850 has huge IPS glow that is really annoying in a dark room, G7 doesn't have this problem. G7 has a 240hz panel aswell, I can notice the difference between 144 and 240 but it's not huge like 60 to 120. So if I can suggest you a monitor go for the Samsung G7, 27" or 32", I prefer the bigger screen.
@@Biotexo i bought g7 27" a week ago ,and it had broblems with backside, and i needed to return it.
I fell in love with it.
Yesterday i bought lg 27gl850. It's good, but stand is shaking as f**k. I bought an arm for it, now it stays on that.
But.. i want to return it back and change for g7 again.
I don't even know why, but my heart wants it...
Sorry for my English, Ukrainian here.
So,u think it will be right choice to pick g7 home again?)
Thanks for the upload!!!
been using the LG 27GL850 since shortly after launch and i really like it but was looking into maybe getting the 27" version of the g7 and keep the LG as a secondary portrait panel .
if only the LG had better contrast ratio I probably would just keep it lmao. For the games I play having 240hz wouldn't do me much good (maybe in a couple more generations of GPUs, but hell better panels will probably be out by then too)
using a 2080 ti and can't even reach the 144 mark on the LG in practically any AAA games (no I won't turn down settings 🤣)
Did you end up getting the G7? How is it?
@@alexvswrld yeah I got the 27" version from microcenter probably a day after I made my original comment lol,
I love it , would recommend .
I've heard some complaints but I haven't had any issues, so possibly get a warranty with it just in case.
Thanks for making a highly professional review with right balance of technicality & simplicity. Yours the only video from numerous YT videos about panel types which explains about white text on black background. I will like to have your email ID as I wish to discuss with screenshot the issue/solution for white on black.
Cheers & looking forward for more insightful videos.
Can't you post the solution right here in the comment section?
Awesome review!
Very surprised you only notice the contrast difference when comparing them side by side. I've been in the market for a monitor and I've been largely prioritizing contrast ratio.
Contrast is what probably makes the most difference whent it comes to image quality. I have an IPS with a 1200:1 contrast ratio, in person It's obviously not as good looking as a VA
My tn monitor gets way more artifacts and even color shifts on those banding inversion tests on lagom but I've never noticed it in day to day use.
I'm glad I bought the LG one, enjoying the upgrade from 1080@60Hz to 2k@144Hz
Is it still good for you?
@@DirtyFozzy Yes, I'm using it and still like it.
hi! very detailed review, good job :) i have some questions though:
- would you pick the G7 over the LG for it's HDR capabilities?
- would one or the other be better for a darker room?
i'm leaning a bit more towards the G7 because i like its 240hz, as i imagine it'd be better for 60fps games/content because it's 1/4 the frequency. i'm used to IPS though and i don't think i've ever had a VA...
Hi! I don't normally use HDR, so I'm not sure if one is better than the other in that case.
For dark rooms, I would take the G7.
Incredible review that helped me decide which monitor to get.
And Which did u get?)
@@user-dc5te5bh5v the LG was out of stock in my country so I went with a monitor from a local brand. Sorry
Great and substantive review, good job 👍 you have my subscription. Please write what settings you have on the samsung G7 monitor ,THANKS 😊

i guess G7 is the only VA panel that can beat ips panel. That zero ufo ghosting is amazing!
Been using the G7 for almost one year now, it's a great monitor, and in my humble opinion it is worth every penny I spent on it. No real issues, only a few weird bugs like the ports will just shutdown if you plug multiple devices in them, after the monitor enters stand by or if you shut it down. The curvature can be a bit weird at times, but you get used to it, but if you go back to a flat panel you will experience some weird optical illusion seeing the flat screen convex, like it's curved from the center towards the edges in the opposit way. It will pass after 2-3 weeks.
Did you get the 32” or 27”? Im trying to decide which would be best
@@alexvswrld I have the 32 inch, I feel like 32 inches makes justice to the 1000R curvature better than the 27 inch version. That being said, some people may feel like 32 inches and 1440p wouldn't look as sharp but to me it looks great. I don't think you can go wrong with the G7 32 unless you don't like the curvature or the pixel density may be too low which may be the biggest turn off for some, along with the 1000R curve
@@1gianny Great assessment. I can't speak about the 32" curvature, but I personally prefer 32" monitors for 1440p, because it's the same pixel density as 24" 1080p (which is what I like)
@@1gianny Could you share your wisdom with me? I am using the 27" and I tested the 32" model. I felt that the 32" was just too massive for my desk (2 x 4 ft.) and had less sharpness, also a pixel crawling effect on borders. I sit arm's length away and chose the G7 to improve movies and dark games (Dead Space) and that 10-bit 240 Hz was attractive. Before this I had a Dell 165 Hz TN, so colors were barely acceptable and darks were awful.
Anyways, I wanted to ask if you can share your calibration settings. Do you use defaults mostly? What about Nvidia color settings, VRR, Adaptive Sync, local dimming and dynamic contrast? I might be doing it wrong but I feel like the contrast is not as great as it could be. I'm using 10-bit.
Hi i wanna buy g7 27 for gaming
Buy also i wanna watch movei on this monitor . I never befor have curve monitor
Is good for watch movei especially is 1000R
Thanks
AdobeRGB is only relevant if you plan to print your work i.e. ensure the colors on paper match with the colors on your screen. sRGB and P3 color spaces are relevant for producing content to be displayed on screens i.e. tablets, smartphone, TV, monitors, projectors e.t.c
it's amazing that the colors look better on the Va
Colors are supposed to look better on va becausd it has higher contrast, not rlly a surprise
Hi, thanks for review.
So, you think that for coding and work with text flat monitor is better?
Please do a indepth of lg 850 with some settings.... To make the color pop up
thanks for the review. if only Samsung made plat panel monitors instead
what the reviewer completely missed is that the samsung g7 flickers when GSYNC is on . which turning it off results in stutters at bellow 144 FPS
hello again ;D I did not see this video, so if i can i would like to as the same thing: for movies, which panel would be a better option: va or ips? don't really care about games ;D and talking about ips monitor, how many hz would be without gsync? 60? thank you
Amazing videoo
'a little more dim' is it the compression? because for me the white and green texts on the samsung seemed to get dangerously dark?
Gotta say that the Samsung G7 monitor is one of the few, if not the only, VA monitor that does it all mostly right, and can compete against IPS monitors face to face. However, it's not really representative of the VA monitors in the market, which are for the most part cheaper than their IPS equivalents (e.g. Asus VG27AQ and VG27WQ)
Also, VA monitors are mostly curved not for immersion, but so the sides don't bleed color in big screen sizes - the immersion thing is a marketing idea they have managed to sell, but it isn't completely true. If not, why hasn't any single manufacturer made a curved, non-ultrawide IPS panel? The fact that curved, ultrawide IPS panels exist shows that the technology is there, but there'd be no need to make 16:9 monitors curved, other than to hide the awful viewing angles. I'm not attacking the solution the manufacturers have provided for VA panels, just stressing that immersion has little to do with the curvature of your screen.
Which one of 2 is more comfortable for the eye ?
My G9 is F'in amazing in fact its better then my alienware IPS 34 monitor. The Viewing angle thing makes no sense because who plays games from the side view or watches movies from the side great stuff though Ty
Hey, which of these 2 would you recommend for movie watching?
What is this website, where you can see all datas about the display?
Did you noticed any black smearing on the VA panel? From the video you said that the ghosting isn't an issue, which is a big thumbs up when we consider that we're talking about a VA panel. It seems that in this case, this panel doesn't have the famous "cons" that we all know, the ghosting and black smearing
I did not notice any black smearing issues on the Samsung G7 (and I tried looking really hard).
@@ReviewsForLifeYT thanks!
@@ReviewsForLifeYT btw, are you aware of any ultrawide monitor that uses a VA panel and doesn't have this issues? It seems that the only way to avoid it is going the highend IPS route, with the alienware and LG, paying a really high price
it has flicker with gsync on
I really like the colours and sharpness on LG but contrast and ips glow was too distracting for me. Especially when you move your head ips glow moves too which kills all the ''amazing viewing angles'' buzz. What can you say about screen coating. LG's coating is great but i don't know the G7. I have predecessor of G7 and screen coating is not good. It doesn't look as sharp as LG. I wonder did they fix it with the G7 ?
I like the G7 settings more but I hate that curve in the monitor.
hi, thank you for your helpful reviews, i just want to ask you if you have tested some of 32" 1440p monitors, should i worry about big pixels or it is fine? i'm about buying a monitor but still don't know what i should go for 27 or 32..
Yes, I have used 32" monitors before. If you sit
@@ReviewsForLifeYT We are at the end of 2021. Is the Odyssey G7 still the king of VA, contrast, high refresh and low response time? It seems like the G7 is the king of all monitors even, despite the random issues people have had. The firmware seems to have fixed all of it.
I use a 2x4 desk, and I tried the 32" model. It was like a wall of screen in front of me, low PPI, overwhelming to look at (but beautiful). I am using the 27" G7 now. I just don't know how to calibrate everything and take full advantage of the colors and contrast. I feel like I'm doing it wrong. Should I be using Nvidia colors or no? What about VRR/local dimming/dynamic contrast?
just so everyone knows the LG is NOT Displayport certified so if you have a multi-monitor setup then if you make your monitors sleep it will push all your programs to one monitor so you will have to move EVERYTHING back to the other monitor (if you have other programs there) its a minor issue but LG will NOT fix this and drivers do not fix it either, go with the 27GP850 instead its certified and should NOT have this issue
which website you use to test blackbackground with green/white text ?
I made it myself. the text is just a bunch of lorem ipsum jibberish
I would love to see you do a review for 49" super ultra wide monitors. Do you have one you like / tested?
Haven't tested any ultra wides yet, but I might look into it down the line
really appreciate ur review! but i wonder Samsung G5 144hz same with G7 too?
no its not its completly another panel with so much lower color coverage(not even fully srgb) and worst response time even among va panels .if you wanna buy va go with new gigabyte 32 inch va panel its not good in response time but has 1:5000 contrase and very good colors
@@alimetal95 thanks for the suggestion!
This is also a bit of unfair comparison, as the G7 I think is newer than the GL850, so a correct comparison would be with the GP850 which is a bit better than the GL850 :D Just saying, not a fan of either tech, I would rather have an OLED panel.
What about movies comparison??
LG is amazing
Could you please share your test website? I just bought a Benq EX2710R and would like to see if they managed to alleviate black smearing with their panel. Thanks!
Absolutely! Thanks for pointing that out! I updated the description
@@ReviewsForLifeYT thanks, but all 3 are the white background? Edit: nevermind! I had to actually open with G docs. Thanks! Seems the Benq EX2710R passed your test.
What if the panels were in 60hz mode. Would the smearing suddenly become bad on that VA panel? Or is it only not present at max refresh rate.
That's a good question, I noticed the same (lack of) smearing at 60hz
Amazing review, i'm thinking about buying the ASUS VA32UQ, I'll use it mostly to play both on pc and console, but the black smearing is haunting me, what do you think, should i worry?
Did you end up buying a VA panel and does it have the smearing?
Hey @@colinpierre3441, i've bought the VA LG UltraGear 31,5'' with 165Hz and 1ms, and the black smearing is there lol ... but u can make some configurations and diminish it a lot, so it was worth it in the end.
@@AllG From research I've heard that at 100hz or lower you don't see any smearing, especially when scrolling white text on dark mode... have you ever tested this, and if not can you? Also, can you give me some of the configurations you used to diminish it? I'm looking at buying one myself lol
I don't use the 165hz, usually i'm totaly fine with 60hz, so even in this configuration u have blacksmearing. For what i've researched, black smearing is conected to the deep black of the VA panel, so to diminish it u need to use the black stabilizer of your monitor, also I did some adjustments in NVIDIA painel changing brightness and contrast, try something like 55% brightness and 45% contrast. Ultimately, u cant eliminate all of the smearing, so u can either gets used to it and diminish as much as u can or dont' buy it lol, it's a sad truth, but it is what it is ... :D
@@AllG But there are guys out here who say they have VA panels with no smearing. I saw one guy in a comment section say he bought 2 of the same model monitors and one had smearing while the other didn't... go figure. One question though... why did you buy 165hz if you're ok with 60?? lol
I already have a LG IPS monitor but I might upgrade to a GP850 in the future. Should I go with IPS LG or Samsung's VA. I have used VA in the past but the colour accuracy and viewing angles were bad. Has modern VA technology developed to give better colours?
at the highend, LG IPS and Samsung VA monitors are about the same. It gets really hard to notice the difference for day to day use
I have 32gp850 and I have to say very good, much better than my old 32GK650F with much less black smearing from IPS than VA. Plus more colour coverage in IPS than VA.
Do you guys think the lg or the Samsung is a better fit ? Idk if the curve is beneficial or not
How about the new MSI Optix 27 ”MAG274QRF-QD with 1 ms (GTG) IPS (the fastest ips on the market, they say) produced by AU Optronics, do you plan to review it soon?
Thanks for the suggestion! Unfortunately I can't afford that one right now. Maybe in the future
It doesn't have 1 ms GTG: www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/msi/optix-mag274qrf-qd
and this review where they indicated their "1 ms GTG" (the best mark where nobody can't use it normally). It's marketing and outright lie to be honest. ua-cam.com/video/i3X3yFh0-gE/v-deo.html
Hello
on my G7 27 inch there is 16 brightness
way too dark
are there different panels i need at least 40 brightness
Link to that text response time test?
got the g7, done a quick game on battlefield, black smearing everywhere, refounded 2 hour later
You deserve that for playing garbage xDD
@Boinz free stuff dont come for nothing i think
I'd buy the G7 if it was flat. Now I'm waiting for my LG 32GP850
What do you think would be better for me?
1080p 240hz vs 1440p 144hz. I mainly play Valorant/CSGO and single player games sometimes.
If you're into the competitive scene, 240Hz is the way to go. Also the reduced resolution will allow your graphics card to pump more frames.
how did u calibrate de LG on the start?
Thanks for the follow up review
So I don't understand why people praise the G7 a lot and prefer it over many other moniters.. After looking at this review I think the LG looks better but seems many people recommend the G7
It literally looks the same as the G7, except with worse contrast and black levels
Does the 27 inch g7 feel small in comparison to the 27 inch lg gl850 when kept side by side?
Yes, I do find it to be smaller if they are the same distance away from me
I got the GL850, its crap for playing dark games like tarkov, get the G7. Even messing with black stabilizers all you get is gray instead of pitch black but still lose all the details.
Which personal choice would you take? Samsung G7 , Lg 27GL850 or Dell S2721DGF ?
DELL 3220dgf and you rock
I criticized your earlier ips vs va panel review (ua-cam.com/video/34bqY7CToHg/v-deo.html) because I felt it prejudiced.
This is a professional comparison - many thanks for the advanced review!
It is not same.
Samsung G7 use different panel from almost all other VA panels available including the viewsonic VA monitor u included in your test
The panels used in G7 has fixed the black smearing issue almost entirely that is why it is not showing in this review versus being quite obvious in your review.
But thanks for the review anyway it is still really helpful for compare non G7 VA monitors to IPS :)
is the g6 the same as the g7?
i have no ghosting With Va g7 0 ghosting issue in all games with ips have low repsonse times when i want to flick shoots it lags.
It's very rare comparison saying honest opinion, that IPS black level and especially glow looks MUCH worse when filmed on camera. Of course, VA beats it in that aspect, but even not close as it showed in some videos (especially that showing Odyssey monitors comparisons)
i had g7 240 hz qhd and can tell you that was one of the best i have ever had including this lg 850 and the 950 who wasent even near of g7 240hz, but now i have changet to g7 144hz 4k and can tell difference that the 240hz was smother and color was better in my eyes. g7 qhd 240 hz in not any average va panel but premium va no ghosting very fast.
share your g7 option plz
Do you know anything about Dell 2721DGF? Isnt it better to buy than LG 850?
Why? Both use the same panel!

Hello, I have recently bought a TV with VA Panel and everything seems blurry, especially text looks very bad, some letters are half-lit and out of focus. Didn't you any of these similar problems while you were testing for text clarity on a VA panel. I am not sure if I am making something wrong, or the VA panel is absolutely rubbish. Because I don't believe anyone can use such a blurry screen. Can you please explain more about the high resolution text clarity on VA panels?
TV VA Panels are different. Because test Clarity is not as important for a TV as a PC monitor they add something that that improves viewing angles, but reduces text Clarity. Rtings rated the Odyssey G7 the highest rating for any monitor with 1440p.
I play in a dark room would you recommend VA or IPS in this case?
For dark rooms, VA
@@ReviewsForLifeYT It doesn't show in this video, though. Perhaps because the VA panel is much pricier?
@@LyleGlenn because Black Color is much darker in the VA as the video said, and if you work at the dark rooms, the darker the black the less restraint in the eyes
G7 is a killer 👀

G7 is literally shit in anything outside gaming (even in gaming the curve is just too much). I returned it after a week and got the lg flat screen.
bro has something against VA panels
Just buy the one that is cheaper, doesn't really matter . You not going to use it forever
People like myself who bought LG IPS are bleeding in red. My personal suggestion would be to get an IPS panel from better companies like Dell, BenQ etc., which have higher manufacturing process quality and will not see those backlight bleeding issues like in LG. I have totally avoided IPS panels because of these backlight bleeds and I am going to purchase BenQ's 4k VA panel (EW3270U) moving away from a 4year old 4k LG panel (27UD68-p).
I had an Alienware AW2721D (manufactured by Dell) and it had some of the worst backlight bleeding I've ever seen. I had to go through 4 of them before I got a sample that was suitable, and eventually I went to a G7 because I got tired of the poor contrast and backlight bleed. The colors are comparable on the G7 but the improved contrast brings out much more detail. I'm waiting on the 34" QD-OLED monitor from Alienware to drop this March before I upgrade again.
