  • B.B. King performs "How Blue Can You Get" live at the Farm Aid concert in Champaign, Illinois on September 22, 1985. Farm Aid was started by Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp in 1985 to keep family farmers on the land and has worked since then to make sure everyone has access to good food from family farmers. Dave Matthews joined Farm Aid's board of directors in 2001.
For more information about Farm Aid, visit: farmaid.org/youtube
Farm Aid's performances are donated by the artists in order to raise funds and raise awareness for family farmers. They've raised their voices to help - what can you do?
Farm Aid’s mission is to build a vibrant, family farm-centered system of agriculture in America. Farm Aid artists and board members Willie Nelson, Neil Young, John Mellencamp, Dave Matthews and Margo Price host an annual festival to raise funds to support Farm Aid’s work with family farmers and to inspire people to choose family farm food. For more than 35 years, Farm Aid, with the support of the artists who contribute their performances each year, has raised more than $78 million to support programs that help farmers thrive, expand the reach of the Good Food Movement, take action to change the dominant system of industrial agriculture and promote food from family farms.

It's funny that at that point in his career he didn't have a second Lucille all strung up and ready to go on a stand. Gibson at that time was committed to B.B. and should have provided more than one Lucille to him. Gibson made a fortune off of him. They still sell semi-hollows with his name on him. I"m guessing Gibson just took him for granted.

This was one incredible afternoon of music. I was working backstage at this show, and when they introduced him, they said it was BB King's 60th birthday (it was actually a couple of days before). But the stadium was full of college kids and country fans, and I'd imagine that not that many people knew who he was.
He got kind of a lukewarm reception, and then he got out on the lip of the stage, and just sold it. Unbelievable how the crowd turned around-never seen anything like it. Place went nuts.

@@pritchettedeaton Not only that, but to keep things moving, they were using the Budweiser rotating stage that allowed them to set up the next band while the current act was playing its set. Each band had been allotted a strict 15 minute time limit that day, and when BB hit about the 18 minute mark, the floor manager with the headset from The Nashville Network (who was carrying the daytime feed) came out of the truck and got in BB’s road manager’s face and was screaming at him to get them to wrap it up. At this point, the crowd in Memorial Stadium was on fire, the place was rocking like I’d never seen, and I heard the road manager yell back, “…what do you want me to do, get the hook out and pull him off stage? Mr King will stop playing when he’s good and god damned ready!” And he ended up going just under a half hour. It was truly something else.

Albert King and Albert Collins, the same, play a few notes at the right time, right feel, right energy, and that's it. Unreal. Albert Collins doesn't even change positions on the neck and gets it done better than most.

Loved BB King since I was a kid. We used to go see him at the Warehouse in New Orleans. Wow, the music was unreal. The man could make a guitar actually talk, cry, laugh out loud and chuckle, and you never saw it coming!!! Awesome!!

    I've been down hearted baby
Ever since the day we met
I said I've been down hearted baby
Ever since the day we met
Our love is nothing but the blues, woman
Baby, how blue can you get?
You're evil when I'm with you, baby
And you're jealous when we're apart
I said You're evil when I'm with you, baby
And you're jealous when we're apart
How blue can you get baby
The answer is right here in my heart
I gave you a brand new Ford
But you said: "I want a Cadillac"
I bought you a ten dollar dinner
And you said: "thanks for the snack"
I let you live in my pent house
You said it just a shack
    I gave you seven children
And now you wanna give them back
I said I've been down hearted baby
Ever since the day we met
Our love is nothing but the blues
Baby, how blue can you get?

I saw a video of BB playing this song in a prison. Same vibe, but what was incredible was the fact that his vocals were obviously heard through the PA, but the mic also picked up his ambient voice in the room. Monstrous vocals overriding the PA, the man roared like a lion, like a King. What an amazing talent, and a brilliant entertainer and showman.

The power behind his voice! Look how far away he was from that mic and was able to project that far.

Incredible. I first saw BB at a private corporate gig in Ottawa's National Arts Center (What a room. acoustically PERFECT) in 1980. I was 20, and blissfully ignorant. Totally changed my life. Never missed a show, right to the end. Thanks, Blues Boy.

I grew up listening to BB King 8 tracks in my dad's old 78 T-Bird. So my appreciation of his music goes back almost 40 years. This is my favorite BB song. This man is a phenomenally gifted vocalist and guitarist. He sounds even better live than he does recorded. Live on BB keep making it do what it do!!! You did this!

B.B. was the first live concert I ever saw. 16 yrs ago. It was in Omaha NE. I was 14, and I've never seen anything like it since.
It was actually the 2nd show he had done THAT DAY! He played across the river in Iowa earlier that day and still gave more energy and emotion than any live show I've seen since. It literally changed my life; changed everything that I thought was good music, and opened me up to the world of Blues. And that's a good world to live in.
Thanks B. I wish you well.

I really miss hearing music directly from a person's soul. Today's music is all about hypnotic beats and lyrics, no story......no soul. But when I watch BB King perform this song, though I see his hands moving over the guitar, I hear the music like its coming from his soul. Something you just don't get with today's music, at least not very often.
