B.B. King Live In Africa '74 is a rare - extremely rare - intimate view of
B.B. King in concert. At age 49, having "crossed over" to wide popularity with his show
at the Fillmore West in 1968 and secured his fame with the 1970 hit "The Thrill Is Gone,"
B.B. stands onstage before Muhammad Ali and a crowd of 80,000 on the continent his
ancestors left in chains and gives one of the most thrilling performances of his life. "The
King of the Blues" (B.B.), "Soul Brother #1" (James Brown) and other African-American
artists on the bill reveled in the return to their cultural motherland for a gala affair that was
attended by fans and journalists from all over the world.
The backstory around this perfonnance is rich. Behind B.B. is a large orchestra,
made up of core members ofB.B.'s touring band - pianist Ron Levy, drummer Sonny
Freeman and saxophonist Bobby Forte - plus studio musicians recruited (mostly) from
New York, including renowned session guitarist Larry Carlton. Directed by Hampton
Reese, B.B.'s longtime friend and musical tutor (you'll see him in his plaid sport coat
conducting the band), this collection of musicians achieved their amazing performance
after a single rehearsal in Kinshasa. Hampton wrote the charts for all the songs in the set,
and every musician was playing from those charts.
Of the musicians who played that concert from B.B.'s 1974 touring band, only
Ron Levy is still living. Here are some of his recollections of the unforgettable trip to
Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo) and their historic performance there:
To perform in Africa - the land of his ancestors, at this stadium event before
80,000 - plus crazed, hot, sweaty, dancing and bouncing heads and soulfully
pained hearts -- must have had a very special personal significance for B.B.,
as it did for us all. We all realized this was not just another gig. It was history,
good history. We were all very proud to be a part of it. As far as the set went,
we performed 8.B.'s most famous hits. I have to say, this was probably the
first lime this crowd ever heard - or heard of - B.B. King. but as usual he
left them wanting more, as well as an indelible memory of his sincere personal
passion and deep-felt blues.
He definitely connected with them like the beloved king he is. If you're a
B.B. King fan, you are in for a rare treat with B.B, King Live in Africa '74. If this is
your introduction to the King of the Blues, you'll understand why he is so loved the
world over.

If Hendrix says B.B.King was the best, he was.
I think Jimi also said Rory Gallagher was the best... theres a lot of best's, all great!
@@joggejor and buddy guy too if im not mistaken
Jimmy stated that the best player he saw play was the Greek Bouzouki player Manolis Chiotis
Well.... that's a personal opinion.
Everyone's the best at what they do if they make it their own! 😁
He is way better than technical and fast guitarists. BB plays with pure emotion
He can shred if he wants, or play like Django or Wes or T-Bone, but mostly he plays like BB King, and says more with less, every not counts!
By Far
He is very good technically
@@Kinoboyyy his bending technique is godly but overall not a technicaly great player
Exactly, always make me laugh when some will compare x random guitarists with a legend like BB just because he can play faster or whatever, a Robot could play faster than any human..
The facial expressions, the body language... You can't play that, it has to come from the heart. And damn did he play with his heart and soul. What a gift to music he was and still is. We need such legends now more than ever in a world where popular music is essentially demografics. People need to pay attention to good music. You need to have patience with music so it can grow on you. Listen to something twice, even if you didn't like it much the first time. Good music IS THERE today, but goes unnoticed.
Excelente comentario, toda la buena música ya existe, solo tenemos que buscarla
Still here 2024 blues forever ❤❤❤
BB always went into a trance when he played. Like a real legend.
Right
Man, they start at 60-61 BPM and end at 80-81BPM! Thats some heavy driftin' right there. Letting the tempo go up along with the intensity of the song like this is just lovely in this case. In todays click-track world you would get fired for speeding up like that on the drums :D
In Blues like this I see no problem speeding up and slowing down, even multiple times. But I guess in a pop song I would like consistency.
It's more organic that way
I had to run it back to the beginning, listen to a bar, then zoom all the way to the end to hear the difference but you're right hehe.
BLUES IS NO MUSIC. BLUES IS MEDICINE.
Everyone talks about his undeniably awesome guitar skills, but what needs more attention his playful lyrical and singing capabilities.
A great player, no doubt about it, but IMHO he's the greatest blues SINGER who ever lived.
What an amazing artist and human being he was. He will be missed by many. RIP big guy, (king of the blues).
Jimmy Page the legend never die .i'm so glad and so sade to share this moment with you Jimmy Page .you are a legend too .
Jimmy page the guys or the king who know to play the classic rock are the gods u r to an man of shreds and licks!
+Jean-claude Dalot xD
jean-claude dalot you know he just a fanboy right
kyle, i think that he is the real jimmy :D kappa
It is so great to hear BB KIng really stretching out on this recording. These African recordings with a very young Larry Carlton as rhythm guitarist are my personal BB King favorites. It just doesn´t get any better! Thanks for loading!
We missed the opportunity if Zambia own the Africa cup in 1974 this show could have could have been held in my country Zambia But Zaire won the trophy hence ALI FOREMAN - Ramble in Jungle took place in present day CONGO DRC
-Where did he played ?
-In Africa
-Yeah thank you, "somewhere in this planet"
He was performing in Africa 1974 for the pre. Fight festives for the Muhammad Ali vs George foreman fight
In Democratic Republic of Congo
Zaire
@@aureliojhene8259 I wonder why they chose Zaire?
Kinshasa ! Zaïre !
The guitar playing, the singing voice, the songwriting, the showmanship. He had it all, and lots and lots and lots of it. That’s why he’s the king of the blues.
That vibrato is untouchable, RIP THE KING
Im really surprised there isnt a comment about how some one is only 15 years old and they listen to bb king. And so on about how they think their generations music sucks.
+Ryan Duff not surprising. Good music is good music anyone of any age can appreciate and love. I love BB King ..always have...
+Ryan Duff Your reward for listening to good music, is the music.
+Mateo Montenegro Then I'll see you in some smokey bar. First round is on me.
+Mateo Montenegro Same. I'm 15 and I've been listening to and playing blues all my life. Today's "music" (actually just a bunch of noises) is always half-assed and has no soul or meaning. People need to wake up.
there are some videos of very young boys playing the blues on their very own guitars...very good too
I'm going to miss the cry's of Lucile
rip bbking
him and albert my 2 favorite blues players and hendrix
Arch Angel Listen to Warning by Black Sabbath. Tony Iommi can play the blues

If this is from the same tour that he went to Lagos, Nigeria with, then I'm glad to say - I was there. I'm also glad to say that B.B. is the ONLY entertainer that I have seen live on 3 continents and enjoyed every single performance. I'm just so glad that he has continued playing and singling the blues, just like I asked him to do in his dressing room after the show. From there we went to the old Bobby Benson Nightclub and partied til dawn. May God continue to bless B. B. KING!
god has blessed him
1970’s BB! Making you feel da blues! The real deal!
Simply the absolute best blues man on a guitar. Saw him live twice.
I envy you, sorry. Never saw him and thats sad cause he visited in Finland several times. What a fool i am
“And I want you to tell that slick insurance man, that he better write some insurance on hisself”😂
My favorite line in that song.
still remember when I was walking into a guitar store in Helsinki 15 years ago or smth, minding my own things as usual, and suddenly BB King came out from there and walked past me. took a while to realise wtf just happened . totally unexpected :)
If it wasn't for BB I wouldn't be the player I am today. He truly is an inspiration to us all. His unique sound and passionate tones laid a permanent foundation for what we call the blues today. It's sad to say that the thrill is gone, but he will forever be the King of the blues.
AMAZING TONE, SINGING AND PLAYING. what an absolute legend
....BB King should have been a main act at Woodstock 1969----Do you agree, appreciated Samuel Matthews ?----"Love and Peace" all over the world right now !!----
This is the true blues! Does not get any better.
BB is the ONLY guitarist that can inspire me to play and give up at the same time. I'm glad I saw him in London at the RAH in the mid 90s and boy, what a show that was. Genius.
Him and Lucille are as one ,when he playing
BB and Srv are the Reason I love the Blues.
What a great performance. B.B. King was really ON during this period - such fire!
No one but BB King has ever created the magical notes that just streamed off his guitar and wheeled through the hemisphere like a sonar of blues shaking the universe...
Hi there.. how are you doing?
Happy new year with good health and prosperity
The definition in blues.
How nice to hear a younger BB King, slowly building his solo up from barely audable to an incredible beautiful climax. His sound is legendary and on this day he is definitely King of the blues!
Who could downvote that. Why did 105 jackasses downvote this video? BB King was one of the greatest showmen of our lifetimes, damn, and this is a sterling example of his stage command.
That sweat is the sweat of power and soul
The first time I've could have gone to a BB King concert I was unable to go do to a automobile and New Orleans at the saenger across the river from where I... And that really hurt me but one day I will go to the BB King in indianola..... The man got all he can get out of a guitar !!!!
I just love seeing humans of all colours coming together....
Nothing better than the blues. Miss him❤️
...that first hit on drums...man....that gave me chills...first ten seconds, dry guitar and then that hit...delicious.
3:50 when he sings (yeah) OMFGGGGG I'm standing up w my hands in the air!!!!
This is so Surreal. On repeat. Thanks for channels like GravityLimited, Espresso Vibes, Jazz and Blue and Koala. Quality before quantity.
Grandísima demostración de pasión y talento👏👏👏👏👏 saludos de México 🇲🇽
De que parte carnal
Never ever ever tire of this ---- cuts to the soul ---- timeless The King of the blues
That vibrato. Good lawd.
The greatest guitar player you could possibly witness. I can guarantee nearly every song we know today after BB King started playing guitar was influenced by him.
To be honest, this concert was one of his best ever. Absolutely beautiful.
Rare moment in the beginning BB playin chords. Long live the last of the Kings!
Where would we all be Without Ever
Loving BB King!!! Thank My Lucky Stars, I Was born In 1950!!!!!
Kenny g
BB's deep in the pocket my god
My soul needs this right now 💚
Larry Carlton playing rhythm for BB king.. humility at its best
When BB doesn´t sing with his voice, he sings with his guitar. pure joy!
B.B. in his prime. Larry Carlton must've been the happiest rhythm guitar player in the world that day.
Jeez, we need this man’s sincerity and depth more than ever these days.
There is no better "guitar face" in the business. BB King is a true living legend.
Jimi Hendrix has pretty good facial expressions too on the electric 🎸 😍
Gary moore too
Also the guy blowing Horn at 2:50 while smoking a cigarette is funny as hell
Master of their Arts like BB and Albert Kings play in no rush, they know how to create/use space to build a melody
I cant stop smiling.
Calebe Priester kkkk Verdade.
cantava demais tbm
I remember visiting Africa, it's such a quaint little town. Didn't see this when I was there, I must have been next door at the time.
His voice was and classic period too much, soul 😍
You've gotta respect guys like BB King and Willie Nelson for playing the same guitar throughout their whole career. In a weird way, respecting your instrument in that way, makes me think that you might have respected your bandmates that way as well. Hopefully treating them better then maybe other musicians did. I hope that's the case for these two legends, because I truly love these men. R.I.P -B.B. KING. --- LEGEND.
Eric Standiford There were about 30 different Lucilles. He got a new one every few years
BB King e seu Blues são imortais! Descane em paz Rei do Blues.
Jonas Josias hvg7
There was never filler with BB. The guitarists down here know especially what I mean. There was no lock just to fill space. Just pure singing whenever his voice cutoff. Absolute blues _god_ !
I want to learn to play the electric guitar. God it sounds good. It has its own style. If you listen it actually speaks to you.
Wow, Larry Carlton on guitar too.
I believe that the Brecker Brothers were there too...
amazing
Not bad when you have Larry Carlton on rhythm!
I thought that was him... Thanks
Amazing!!!
My grandmother's all-time favorite musician...R.I.P. MeMe
I believe to my soul that the thrill is truly gone without you BB. We miss you every day.
The correct name of the song is "Outside Help"

That B.B. KING WAS A AWESOME HUMAN
WHO PLAYED N PAYED HIS DUES!
I keep coming back to this concert. I just don`t think I have ever heard BB King so turned on before. What a sound both in voice and on the guitar. A truely unbeliveable performance
Powerful BB King!!!
I love how the trombone player is just casually playing with a cigarette in his hand @ 2:52
The blues
My dad still has BB king pin he puts on his driver side mirror/sunshade thing that he has moved through vehicles he got in the early 2000s from a show and I think about this performance every time i see it. This is one of the most iconic performances of his I've seen on the internet
Holy crap, that was amazing! BB is indeed the King of the Blues.
É emoção pura, sem comentarios para não estragar ,love you B.B ,
blues de verdade!
I love this so much, the bridging of two distantly related cultures. Bringing back a hundred years of unique blues culture back to the motherland in the most beautiful form possible. That’s the King baby.
Yes.

Happy Birthday up there in Blues Heaven, Mr. BB King!
Un trombonista fumando muy bueeeeno!
The trumpet player is trying to multitask by smoking and blowing the trumpet simultaneously.
That's some real old school there.
