I haven’t done any film photography for a while so check this, but remember that in colour films the reciprocity effect also affects colour balance, leading to a colour cast over the resulting image. To counter this, colour film manufacturers published colour correction factors for long exposure to tell you which colour correction filter is required.
Thomas - the image at the 7-min mark is beautiful. The composition and the light are just perfect. By contrast, the colourful shot into the rising sun is, as you said, a bit obvious - and I avoid these myself for the same reason. The last image is lovely, but the earlier one is still the best. Holy shit - I just watched the last bit of your video, and I felt my own balls shrivel in fright!!! Wow - you're a man of your word! Pisser!!
Tom, you are so polite so never worry about asking folk to walk behind you! I remember one of your very earliest videos when you said you hated talking in front of folk, you are a natural so just jabber away and ignore them! Props for taking a dip, the North Sea in March must be bloody freezing lol. Oh and the last image is a stunner.
I have shot film a few times maybe thirty years ago before digital was a thing, which is why i gave photography up back then as it was just so so difficult to teach yourself , i am enjoying watching your journey with film and how you approach it, that last image, sadly for you, came out really well hope you are over the hyperthermia that surely must have followed . I also find it difficult to talk on camera in front of people , just so self conscious. I also admire your outlook when members of the public are also enjoying the landscape. I dont comment very often but watch all your videos and really enjoy them and find them a great source of personal inspiration , so thankyou .
The second to last photo was great. I agree that it was very simple. And i mean, its a sunset so it’s beautiful. I really enjoyed it BUT then u had to out do it with that last photo. LOVED ALL OF IT!
I love the last shot. You nailed both the exposure and the composition. I love the foreground and the white lighthouse in the distance. The colors are amazing. They are both warm and cool, if that makes sense. The sunlight on the rocks are warm and the colors in the water and sky are cool. Makes for a nice balance.
Never will we be able to "unsee " that ending. It is now engrained into our memory banks for life. Thanks Thomas. You were a brave soul, I have to give you that.
Thomas Heaton film instructions: 1- Click on like button and subscribe 2- Get comfortable, beverages optional ! 3- Relax and watch film, take inspiration and look forward to future content. Simple really. Cheers Tom. PS Nice gloves. The last photo is my favourite, perfect light on the white lighthouse, not always easy, you've done a great job balancing the exposure. Great job. Happy swimming.
Whoa, wonderful episode. You steadily move photography back (or shall I say: forward?) to where it can be: ART ! I say "can be" because there is no need to make photograph a piece of art every time and there are plenty good reasons for most people not to try. But you deliberately picked the form of photography with the highest possible demands on craftmanship: all manual, analog, limited resources (no. of images per film, but also dynamic range is a limited resource!) and almost blind in composition (at least regarding grad. filters). That is art to me. And finally you wrap that hard work into an entertaining and even funny (holy cow, that last scene...) episode, which I find to be a form of art on itself. My compliments and a massive thanks for sharing. For sure one of the very few GEMs on YT 🍀🌈🙂👍📷
O TREMENDOUS! This was a thrilling adventure, you made it so much fun. Surprisingly, I found the shot into the sunrise the one that most surprised me and enjoyable. There was just “something” about the combination and spread of the rocks “floating” in the water that was unexpected, I liked the healthy proliferation of them, and most photographers would have chosen a much more winnowed down challenge. BIG LAUGH at the end, I mean BIGGG LAUGH!!!
I didn't even know you could still buy film! But when I did I'd bracket my shots so I would go home with something. U know as u get older you can stop your heart if the water is to cold. It's to much of a shock. Loved the photos 💜
Unbelievable! I didn't think you'd keep your commitment, Thomas. But then, you are a man of your word, so I shouldn't have been surprised. Although I'm not a film guy, I do remember going on photoshoots with my father who used a large format film camera. It all seemed like magic to me. Thanks for bringing back good memories.
I couldn't agree more on the distaste of asking people to avoid my camera. Just this weekend I was setup for a long exposure shot and a lady with kids were nearby, the kids were playing and having a great time, but working their way closer and closer to me. Finally the little girl was almost in front of my camera, but I was using my 70-200 and by leaning down and eyeballing the situation I could see she would not get in the shot. So I let her go without a word. In the end she did not get in my shot and we were all happy. Maybe someday I'll get the courage (if that's what it is) to say something, LOL! Great images and videos like this take me back to my film days: Love it!!
I have the G617. It has immediately become my absolute favorite camera to shoot with. Mistakes have been made, accidental shots have been taken, and whole rolls have been wasted. But the results are AMAZING.
I love the sunrise shot with the Velvia 50, the one you did not like. I think the shots benefit from being panos and would look great on the inside wall of local bank. Are local businesses asking you for images Tom? If not, why not. I LOVE the ending. You are so great to watch on YT. I would not miss one of your posts, ever. 👍👍👍
Long exposures also affect the colour of the photograph. Under the reciprocity section in the data sheet the manufacturer usually mentions which filter to use to cancel it out, I think Velvia needs some grade of green filtration.
My favourite is the sunrise image. For me it is Velvia at its best. The last one is very lovely too. Have a word with Joe Cornish. He used to push Velvia 50 to ISO 100 to make it more realistic and less punchy. I learnt that on one of his Light and Land Workshops many years ago, before digital.
These videos are honestly the most relaxing and inspiring videos ive watched on youtube, every time I watch a new one it just reminds me why I started photography and why I love it so much. Thank you Thomas, keep up the amazing work!
Dude your face when you went into the water up to your shoulders..... Priceless!! Is this not the epitome of practice makes perfect!?!? I love following you on these! Awesome job!
Well done!! I hope you enjoyed your swim. I’m glad to see you persevering with the pesky Fuji. Your time learning will be very well spent. I think you could afford to be less frugal with your actual film usage. You’ve taken the time to get there, set up, select an image and calculate a suitable exposure. So shoot more. Bracket your images, certainly with the Velvia. The main thing about the Fuji is that it slows the photographer down, gives more time to tweak the image and more time to enjoy the whole photographic process. Anyway, I enjoyed the video and loved your last image.
Really nice video again. I feel like you're always outdoing yourself in regards to edutainment and production quality. I hope you'll have a lot of fun with that camera and I am already looking forward to a panoramic calendar of yours. 👍🏽 Cheers.
Great Thomas greetings from Finland! i admire your dedication to photography. You may not understand how much light you bring to the motivation of our other 'hobbyists' - big thanks and good luck / endurance continuing to do a good job Tom!!!
Never underestimate the power of Big Bertha. That last shot was a topper. Hopefully wont be too long before I can return to the Northumberland coast again. Thanks for posting.
Great video Thomas. It's nice to see you getting that passion back after what I know has been a long year for you as has been evidenced by the psychological ups and downs in your videos. I thought I was watching a Gavin Hardcastle video with the great comedy at the end. As for the images, the last image, with the pastel colours was fantastic for what is basically your first attempt at using this camera. Well done and looking forward to a rejuvenated Thomas Heaton.
The image came out and crown jewels paid the price, that looked a cold 'dook' in the water Thomas but have to say final two images certainly looked great in the pano format👍
If the price one has to pay for great photography is jumping in the cold drink, I think I'm suddenly happy that I'm not any semblance of a skilled photographer. That last image was a stunner, Thomas and the video was a lot of fun. Cheers!
That's a nice ending! Next step is the ice bath like we do it up here in Norway, cut a whole in a frozen lake and take a bath there! :) Part of the morning ritual!
I've politely asked people to please walk behind me for the same reason you did. Never had a problem. I did like the last image. The sunrise image is very pretty, but I agree it's a bit post-cardy.
Yes I agree that the last image was the best of the ones you had taken. My second favorite was actually the one taken into the sun. That's an interesting camera to use and i suppose when the shots are successful that they can print very big and will remain quite sharp.
Man that looked cold. I lived in Tasmania for 20 years and surfed all year round at many different beaches. I will always remember going out surfing when there was snow on the sand, being a mainlander, I could only last about 30-45 minutes before I'd have to go in, the locals would stay out for a couple of hours. They breed them tough in Tasmania.
THE best ending ever!!!! 😂😂

At least we know the next episode won't be about photography - but about Heaton's recovery from hypothermia hahaha
I felt his pain
or looking for his crown jewels 😂😲😫😂😂
I love the reflection of the lighthouse in the wet sand on the last shot.
I don’t miss reciprocity failure and color shifts. Velvia was one of my favorites back in the day, Fun to watch you in action.
Tom, you are so polite so never worry about asking folk to walk behind you! I remember one of your very earliest videos when you said you hated talking in front of folk, you are a natural so just jabber away and ignore them! Props for taking a dip, the North Sea in March must be bloody freezing lol. Oh and the last image is a stunner.
nailed it! that last shot has beautiful warm purples and oranges.
i love the pinkish hue on the first image
Keeping one’s promises is important. But getting the shot is what it’s all about.
Thanks for sharing again Thomas.
Stay safe,......and warm 😷🇦🇺
Its always worth it, respect their decision if they decide to walk through but most people dont want to hurt the shot if they can avoid it.
Great photos, and entertaining to the end! What a peaceful beach... A walk on the beach every morning would do humanity a world of good 😌
I have shot film a few times maybe thirty years ago before digital was a thing, which is why i gave photography up back then as it was just so so difficult to teach yourself , i am enjoying watching your journey with film and how you approach it, that last image, sadly for you, came out really well hope you are over the hyperthermia that surely must have followed . The ending was brilliant!

I really like the bit of a reflection of the lighthouse in the wet sand. Really cool.
Genuine humanity in this one. I relate to this vid so much
Agree, that your final image was the best. Well done Thomas.
Watching again because I just got a 6x17 roll film back. Looking forward to more film videos.
Twit!....🥰😍😂📸....glad you kept your hat on!....😘🌈📸
It’s called integrity and follow-through. Well done.
Whoa, wonderful episode. You steadily move photography back (or shall I say: forward?) to where it can be: ART !

The tones of the Velvia are absolutely gorgeous
Lol, love the ending! Think the sunset photo was my fav of the bunch. It had more going on that the rest.
Best ending ever!🤣 You are sir a true gentleman, You are true to your word!👊
A great set of images. I like the color tones of both films.
Brilliant job! Thoroughly enjoyed watching the transformation and attention to detail. Good on ya, mate!
This video put a huge smile on my face!

Your final image on the Velvia 50 is great! Let's see a print of it. Thanks for sharing.
Certainly love the last image.
I've always wanted to use the Fuji GX617. What a beautiful camera!
Love your humility, honesty and storytelling, another wonderful video. Cheers, Duade
Great video, Tom you are really inspiring me to get back at it with the landscape photography.
Jason
Oh yeah baby! You definitely ended on a winner!
Man of his word! Yes Thomas! 🙌
LMBO! That's ending was awesome.
A man of his word! Great Photos Thomas....
Thank you for sharing this moment
I didn't even know you could still buy film! But when I did I'd bracket my shots so I would go home with something. U know as u get older you can stop your heart if the water is to cold. It's to much of a shock. Loved the photos 💜
Thats what we like, a photographer of convictions.
Unbelievable! I didn't think you'd keep your commitment, Thomas. But then, you are a man of your word, so I shouldn't have been surprised. Got to love a man of his word.
I have the G617. It has immediately become my absolute favorite camera to shoot with. Mistakes have been made, accidental shots have been taken, and whole rolls have been wasted. But the results are AMAZING.
loved the ending! love the honesty with which you make your videos.
Thought the last image was the pick of them but watching you have a dip in the very cold looking ocean just cracked me up 👏👏👏👍
Thank you so much Thomas! I love your vidéo and composition at the beach!
Wow 5+ stops over. I'm amazed that you have a thing to share. Well done that man.
in love with velvia :-)
Great shots Thomas. Please continue to explore film photography, it is very inspiring.

Damn man. That ending. You really made me laugh. Kudos to you!!
Long exposures also affect the colour of the photograph. Under the reciprocity section in the data sheet the manufacturer usually mentions which filter to use to cancel it out, I think Velvia needs some grade of green filtration.
Wonderful video! The sunrise image is beautiful, easily my favorite from this video.
Thanks a lot.

Last two photos...beautiful 😍👌🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾.
Love it when you mix it up with your different cameras.
Both the last two are great. Well done!
The sunset you were not fond of I would love it on a 36 inch print the length of my couch.
Dude your face when you went into the water up to your shoulders..... Priceless!! Is this not the epitome of practice makes perfect!?!? I love following you on these! Awesome job!

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Absolutely fabulous ending!
I really hope you are alright after that.
Beautiful pictures, congratulations!
I really like the Fujifilm GX617.
The things some people will do!! (Well done Thomas; in the right spirit). Btw, love the final image.
What a great moments you make me in front of the pc!! Congrats for your impressive work!
I think the last photograph is great, yet the third one is more exciting.
Never underestimate the power of Big Bertha. That last shot was a topper. Hopefully wont be too long before I can return to the Northumberland coast again. Thanks for posting.
You're very mindful of your photography, I don't ever see anything "reckless" or bland. Keep up the excellent work!
Hi Thomas ! GREAT !!! GREAT !!! GREAT !!!
The last one is perfect!😊
Great video Thomas. It's nice to see you getting that passion back after what I know has been a long year for you as has been evidenced by the psychological ups and downs in your videos. The image came out and crown jewels paid the price, that looked a cold 'dook' in the water Thomas but have to say final two images certainly looked great in the pano format👍
absolutely stunning
Well you really took the phrase literally 😏.. Pure hard work and so relieved to see dramatic step by step improvements.. And loved the dip...
If the price one has to pay for great photography is jumping in the cold drink, I think I'm suddenly happy that I'm not any semblance of a skilled photographer. That last image was a stunner, Thomas and the video was a lot of fun. Cheers!
I love your last image! And well done for braving the freezing sea, AND without a wetsuit!
Ya nuts Heaton!! But it is great to see how you are learning with each image on that camera.
That camera is awesome!! Beautiful photographs!
Really enjoyed the fact that you've at last achieved success with the GX617. In particular the last scene was epic!!!!!!
This was great! That last shot was fantastic!
Glad to see that the images turned out. I guess now that you realize that you and polar bears have a little something in common.
Wow! You have tamed the GX617 beast. Your patience was worth it. Look forward to more stunning images. The ending was totally unexpected👏
Big Bertha is back! Wohoo 😀
That's a nice ending! Next step is the ice bath like we do it up here in Norway, cut a whole in a frozen lake and take a bath there! :)
Part of the morning ritual!
6x17 panorama is stunning
Always a pleasure to watch your videos Thomas. I’m excited to see that you’re visiting film a lot!
Thomas, good on ya....you’re a gamer...I remember swimming in the Baltic after a sauna a few years ago... I know how cold you feel...
Incredibly beautiful panorama! Bravo! Bravo! Bravo!
Loved the last clip of you swimming. Very funny. Good on ya mate.
I've politely asked people to please walk behind me for the same reason you did. Never had a problem. I did like the last image. The sunrise image is very pretty, but I agree it's a bit post-cardy.
Eh, post cards $ell 😁 keeps the film in the camera
Yes I agree that the last image was the best of the ones you had taken. My second favorite was actually the one taken into the sun. That's an interesting camera to use and i suppose when the shots are successful that they can print very big and will remain quite sharp.
Yup. That last shot was definitely worth a cold dip. ☀️

A man of his word, I was freezing just watching!
