@@TheBulap Dutch Marechaussee (Dutch gendarmerie, marechaussee initally being an insult for gendarmerie) also has a political security unit (diplomats, the king, foreign heads of state, etc) that used this exact weapon. Not any more, untill 90's I believe when they switched to compact bullpups. It is technically classified what they use even though you can spot them and their gear on occassion. Also the lads that come break down a wall with an YPR if a suspect is deemed too high risk for police special units to break down the door. I suspect GIGN has the same kind of humour.
You seem to be under the misconception that the GIGN replaced their auto pistols with revolvers.... that wasn't the case. The GIGN carried, and still often carries today, BOTH a semi-auto pistol and the revolver. It makes sense in the original GIGN mission framework which was strongly oriented to hostage rescue in very crowded environment (in particular the MR73 was very successful during highjacked plane intervention) where few accurate shots are essential. Also the GIGN kept the "shoot to disable" rather than kill well into the 2000. Remember that the GIGN unlike the SAS is a purely police oriented unit, they will not be used in a military theater. The MR73 was also associated with a specific ammunition (the THV, you can google it), very light, very fast, etremely effective against both soft tissues and the body armor of that era. But the THV didn't cycle well in semi-auto but were great in a 357mag... especially one built to withstand higher than usual pressures.
Imagine being the guys who made the custom bipod mount "Okay so we need custom bipod mounts" "Excellent, what rifle do you wish us to make them for?" "A .357 revolver"
They probably would be less weirded out due to the fact they did a run of superexpensive custom revolvers beforehand but I can definitely imagine the [visible confusion] moment xD
The inspiration for the song: it was a 12" barrel (cut down from a 44-40). Mated in a Great Western frame. Although the .44-40 is about .20 smaller diameter than the 44. (High pressure for sure). I have seen 10" barrels on the m73, (and Dan wesson, and ruger)... I have ONLY seen factory 12" on colt .45 buntlines.
Someone probably commented this already, but the Gendarmerie is a weird case : they are a police force (as in, their duties are the same as the national police) but they are a part of the French Armed Forces, but depend on the Ministry of the Interior due to the aforementioned police duties. They usually cover the rural parts of France, while the national police is concentrated in the more urban areas. So, basically, they are cops with military ranks.

In this configuration yeah, however they did have actual rifle length barrles you could swap onto this thing and make it into a legitimate marksmans weapon. As far as I know they still use these as side arms to this day, even as a secondary sidearm...they really like this fuckin gun.
@rwsthedemonking That's just not true, the MR73 is carried by almost every single GIGN operative, as a sidearm, even if they already have a sidearm. That's only true if you look at how often they got shot, which is quite rarely, but if you look at all GIGN operations, they never really shoot in the first place IIRC it's about 98% of missions have no rounds fired. But if you mean range only as in it's carried only on the range, it's demonstrably false. There is a case to be made about actual use however, but not a very good one.
@rwsthedemonking What? A tactically good gun? The MR73 was extremely customizable, hell we're watching a video about a sniper-revolver. It's very accurate, has a good grip, sighing, no safety, and most importantly, extremely fucking reliable. Hell I'd say this is probably one of the most tactically sound firearms you could choose. The only sidearm I can even think to compare it to is the HK Mk23, and that's meant to substitute for a rifle.
These are always my favorite kind of video. A gun that on first glance appears completely absurd, and then we get to learn about the unique circumstances and requirements that lead to such an odd firearm. On a side note, I bet that thing would be fun as hell to take to the range.
Especially in the 70s and 80s revolvers were still used by the FBI and even our Navy SEALS in fact the first group of SEALS we had coming thru brought the SW 686, their explanation at the time was being stainless they could swim with them. The Bushnell Phantom scope was one of very few available pistol scopes back then so you saw it used quite a bit and for the time was good quality.
@@CCW1911 Even the 1986 FBI Miami shootout, it seems that 5 of the 8 agents in that gunfight had a revolver as their primary sidearm. Seems auto-loading pistols with reliable expanding ammunition didn't become standard until the 1990's.

We were chatting about revolvers versus automatics back in the 20th century and an old oppo mentioned GIGN and the MR73, never seen one, but the sound of the hammer being pulled back sounded engineering perfection. As an engineer, personally, I find French engineering to be excellent with flashes of extreme intelligence, or just an F up, they use too small fixing screws. 10mm shit and such. Some old things just work well.
Well, most of the operators choose the MR-73 as a back-up sidearm. They usually have a standard pistol (Glock, Sig-Sauer, Five-SeveN) and this revolver, "just in case"
@@hadrienbejuy8217 makes fairly good sense. Revolver action is very reliable, can fit serious stopping power, and chances are that if you manage to fully expend your pistol ammo in the gun in either case then you're pretty much down in shit creek without a paddle (As a sidearm should be worst-case scenario sort of weapon since your primary should do 99% of the work).
as stated by Ian, it may be useless from a civilians perspective. That does not imply however that there are no situations, given that they are rather unique, where oddball pieces like this will be your best bet for whatever you have to do.

Ian, I am quite impressed that you have access to the French Ministry of the Interior. One gets the impression that you are becoming rather well known in certain circles in Europe and Finland. Kudos. And thanks for the great vids.
I am French. And to correct one thing you said. The GIGN goes also on missions outside France. But it concern only the Paris GIGN with is the REAL GIGN. There are others GIGN antennas all around France but not as well trained like The Paris GIGN unit. So they've already had mission in Africa to free French prisoners from terrorist. They also went to Afghanistan for the same reasons, and they also do Top Secret Mission with the Commandos Marine (witch are the pinnacle of the French army). And just to say the Gendarmery is also part of the military. So the GIGN is a military special force witch acts in France ost of the time and witch can act outside France. And to finish, there is also a unit like this but in the French police witch is called The RAID.
Back in the 90s, Jeff Cooper decried the spray and pray cop shootings. He proposed arming cops with Ruger Blackhawks in .357 magnum. The police seem to emphasize mag changes over marksmanship. Actions at the point of contact are the result of training. Then there is the tendency of law enforcement agencies, AND applicants, to utilize the internet for recruiting. So, some newbie from Bugtussell hires on to work in Dallas or Atlanta based on their aptitude score in Nowheresville U.S.A. police academy. Oh yeah, all those cops from WokeA Stan are headed your way. Y'all have a GOODN.

Yes, GIGN members have free range on picking the weapon they feel is the best for the sitaution. And yeah, like gun jesus said, they spend a whole lot of time on the firing range. That 150 rounds a day isn't hyperbolic.
There is a French movie titled "MR73" with Daniel Auteuil. Based on a true story, very dark albeit touching, very French, very good. A must see. The pistol is a protagonist also. Can be taken as an hommage to "Police Python 357" movie with Yves Montand, but deeper and better.
3:45 As a matter of fact, since they're gendarmerie, they're military as well. Which allows them, amongst other things, to operate outside of national territory.

Wow, they really recognize you as the expert you are and I would never have thought the ministry could contain people smart enough to appreciate your perfection and status. That's awesome!
I´ve heard that one GIGN got shot and still managed to kill three terrorists with such a revolver, after he was shot in the right arm, which is quite remarkable, as he was badly injured, there were plenty of non-targets and the terrorists had automatic rifles. Speaking of planes, AFAIK, only the Austrian special police ever managed to end a hostage situation in a plane whilst it was flying at high altitude. The thing was, that one of its members was off duty when some idiot pulled a weapon right next to him...
@@K3end0 I think so. I, however, find it less amazing than the prior one. I´d very much like the odds of the second scenario as even a highly trained professional can get sucker-punched and taking away a weapon from an untrained person, while being highly trained yourself doesn´t sound too risky. The French cop, on the other hand, had a busted arm, was in great pain and had lost a lot of blood. Even without all this hardly any cop would fancy a shootout against three terrorists with only a revolver in your non-dominant hand, let alone when they already know your position and you can´t just fire back willy nilly without risking shooting civilians...

And bullies like to hurt others.... 15 rounds mag dump and 15 more... then hand cuff the corpse.
Every GIGN intervention team gets a MR73 if he's received in the unit, as a gift and a prestige weapon. They still use it nowadays in operations for the multiple advantages a that a revolver can bring.
When he mentioned that one of the reasons they went with a revolver was the lack of double action magazine fed pistols I immediately thought of the Walther P1 and the Smith and Wesson Model 39. And then quickly realized why they didn't adopt either of those. One is made in Germany and the other is not a very reliable pistol.
A few other interesting facts about the GIGN They also use the S&W 686 and korth combat revolvers 98% of gign missions resolve the threat without a shot being fired On average the overall survival rate for all parties involved in a GIGN operation including Opfor is over 99% Yeah GIGN knows there stuff
The GIGN belongs to the Gendarmerie which is a Military unit, unlike the Police forces which are civilian units reporting to the Minister of the Interior. The gendarmerie carries out police missions mainly in rural areas. GIGN is a unit specializing in the management of hostage-taking of French nationals abroad or in France. As in February 1976 in Djibouti. There are also missions that can come close to SEALs like the capture of the Great Mosque of Mecca in 1979. In any case, superb video thank you.
To me one of the coolest things about the GIGN is that they might shoot a few hundred rounds a day in training, but when it comes down to it, they almost never have to fire a single shot to resolve a situation. Seriously impressive group of people.
Some police groups have that presence reminds of a something I saw on SWAT TV show the officer said "When people need help they call the Police, when the Police need help they call SWAT" If GIGN shows up you know things are about to get really serious.
@@bikecommuter24 Well they certainly have the capacities and abilitites to react optimally if things get ugly, but they are heavily trained in de-escalation aswell, they try to prevent collateral damage as much as possible at all times, which is why most of their operations end up with not a single shot having being fired. They are not there to kill people per se, they are there to resolve a difficult situation. They are not hot heads, their selection process makes sure of that. But IF it comes to shooting you don't want to be in the opposing side that's for sure.
You're right about standards, this things will just take anything. Accurate too. Honestly, yes I am french, but I don't think I'm biased, it is the best revolver I have ever fired in my life. Fired Colts, S&Ws; Rugers, this is something else.
I am not French , and I agree with you. The MR73 is an outstanding weapon . I trained with them, SW and Colts, and it is just easier to do really well with.
@@bosknight7837 Today, yes, to a degree. 40 years ago, not as much. And for the example ST6, one of Marchinko's concerns was not having time to clear the barrel- the theory being a shortish-barrel revolver would be effectively self draining. Also, a LOT of autoloaders don't cycle properly underwater, while a revolver just has bad ballistics. I'm 100% certain that John Moses Browning did not plan on needing to use anything he designed as crisis shark repellent.
Pistols are usually more difficult to attain in tightly regulated regions than rifles precisely because you may conceal them. In some places they add long bits of metal to pistols so they classify as "rifle" in length.
actually thats horseshit the pistols are much much more heavily regulated in commie parts of america (Commiefornia, CommiOregon, and New Commie York) its much easier to obtain a bolt action rifle for hunting (a hunting rifle and sniper rifle have few differences other than hunting rifles usually being tailored by their users for hunting close range whereas the sniper would turn his hunting rifle into a tack driver through parts and constant handloading i.e they are the same thing but used and maintained differently) semi auto rifles good god its easier to find heroin on floor at a police station than buy a AR15 in those states
I don't think Ian mentioned that when a team was in a very enclosed space, they found that the ejecting rounds of the semi-automatic pistols broke the concentration of the shooters, so a revolver was thought solve that problem. I also think the teams had sub machine guns, and automatic pistols when they were needed. The MR-73 was for fast, accurate shooting.
The mr73 is still used by the GIGN for an important training exercice: one member must shot a target with this gun and a 357 m bullet at 25 meters (not sure about the exact distance) put on the chest of another member. Le tir de confiance. The non shooter is heavily protect for this shot.
The blueing on that revolver is absolutely stunning ! Almost as good as the perfection that is the Colt Royal blue finish. If the action is only half as good as it looks it will be awesome, I do love a good revolver.
I watched this vid when it first came out, and now I'm back due to Ian range testing the non scoped version with the 5 inch barrel, and holy hell that is one sweet revolver!! Truly a work of beauty. 🤞 I get to shoot one someday!

The light firearm business was stopped in the late of the 90’s, after the commercial fail of the MR93 and MR96, the new French anti gun law and the dismiss of our government to support the firearm industry in favor to Germany (European construction), then they sold to Chappuis gunsmith all the blueprints and machinery to build them (still available newly made, but expensive and less quality). At the time, we made portable missile and launcher, 20mm oerlikon canon, revolver, pistol, sig rifle and many more. Great video. Very informative. If I may add a bit, GIGN is actually technically part of the French army as the Gendarmerie is a branch of the army. GIGN can operate overseas given it is military as opposed to units like the RAID or BAC or GIPN. Being military gives them a wider range of mission capability, they have a paratroop division for example. Anyway, great video. Cheers!
The GIGN have a paratroop division, but at its beginning, the unit was a part of paratroop unit : the EPIGN (Parachute Intervention Squadron of the National Gendarmerie). TheBulap EKO Cobra after that started using the Glock 18 so that alone says a lot

Back in the 90s, Jeff Cooper decried the spray and pray cop shootings. He proposed arming cops with Ruger Blackhawks in .357 magnum. The police seem to emphasize mag changes over marksmanship. I´ve heard that one GIGN got shot and still managed to kill three terrorists with such a revolver, after he was shot in the right arm, which is quite remarkable, as he was badly injured, there were plenty of non-targets and the terrorists had automatic rifles.

Jeremiah I can’t see the flash, I need a better sight picture
And it has to be black too. Black are scary you know.
@@m1a1abramstank49 It's called a clipazine, fool
The mr73 is still used by the GIGN for an important training exercice: one member must shot a target with this gun and a 357 m bullet at 25 meters (not sure about the exact distance) put on the chest of another member. Le tir de confiance. The non shooter is heavily protect for this shot.
You can hear the quality of fit when the cylinder closes with nice click .
The blueing on that revolver is absolutely stunning ! Almost as good as the perfection that is the Colt Royal blue finish. If the action is only half as good as it looks it will be awesome, I do love a good revolver.
Good news : the 8" MR73 is back in production ! It’s already available in France for ~2700€
I guess that it will be available in the US soon.
I watched this vid when it first came out, and now I'm back due to Ian range testing the non scoped version with the 5 inch barrel, and holy hell that is one sweet revolver!! Truly a work of beauty. 🤞 I get to shoot one someday!
3:50 Just a FYI : la gendarmerie actually belongs to the french army force. They all go through the 5 years serving in the military first. So they are legit military troops, elite troops even, considering only 1/100 pass the entry exam.
I was amazed to hear that if you were in GIGN, you're pulling this trigger at least 100x a day for practice.
.357 mag revolver in Special Forces service:
"We always get back to the basics"
I have seen pictures of SEALs using .357s, they liked the stainless for maritime operations.
@@moosemaimer Let's be real, 38 is close but not cigar, 44 is too much, 357 is the perfect balance between power/recoil/weight, touch someone center mass: game over.
@@moosemaimer they use(d) S&W 686 right? it's ss so yeah
Ian explains who the GIGN are.
Some of you viewers haven't played Counterstrike and it shows.
I'm not a shooter but I remain pleased I stumbled across Ian. He is a great speaker. Because of him I understand the basics of firearms and their history and have fired a 22 and 12 gauge several times. I think everyone should understand guns but natural hesitancy and concerns about their glorification put me off.
Gign: we only use 6 round revolvers to get the job done in two shots
Me, who unloaded a full clip into an enemy while playing montagne: 👀
Gign: only six rounds or nothing.
Also gign: p9 with 17 bullets
Caleb Woolston yes that one
Me spamming the trigger as fast as i can on Mw3 lmao
full magazine*** pleb+
Just A Cat cylinder
Thanks, Ministre de l'Intérieur!

I've wanted a Manurhin revolver for years; this is the strangest modification of a weapon I've salivated over so much.
We’re still in activity, on the ammunition production machines side, bought by UAE after our last CEO, banks and French government lead’s us to bankruptcy in mid 2018.
Today we still design, build and sell the most advance and reliable ammunition production machines available from the bullet and case cup to the final packaging of ammunition, linked or in cardboard.
Still alive after 100 years, and maybe more.
truly heroic, anything or anyone who or what can stay in business for 100 years through all the s,,,,,t thats thrown at us.... truly heroic............................... rgw us farmer
You know when I saw the sniper revolver in the thumbnail I had a laugh but really it's a damn beautiful revolver and the niche use it was designed for makes sense.
I'm not the type to describe a gun as "beautiful" but damn I want one of those.
That's so cool that they authorized you to show off one of those :)
So, in function this is basically the Halo CE Magnum IRL.
But with a 10 hour long cocaine binge
@@elongatedborzoi1160 so in other words... 70's edition.
No
With half the capacity.
On its patch, you have a parachute to remind that.
About "oversea", in the French context, RAID/BAC/GIPN can operate in French oversea territories : Polynesia, French Guyana, Martinique,.... More exactly, these units can operate in foreign territories!
i saw a meme on facebook that says "When you maxed out the starter weapon". well now that joke of a revolver with bipod, vertical grip, and scope could be real.
Okay, now I want an M73. I remember when these were available and I never had a clue they were that well built. I always carried an Auto (35 years as a cop and now 5 as a court security officer) but there is just something right about a revolver.
I really recommend it! You will not be disappointed.
a french gendarme
getting started will take a little time to adapt compared to a semi-automatic, but the pleasure and the results are really excellent
@@DirtFmxBoy it wouldn't be hard to adapt as I've been shooting Smith and Wesson revolvers for decades. I really appreciate good engineering and craftsmanship. When I heard the M73 has roller bearings on the trigger I was intrigued.
In the Revolver world, the MR73 is very high on the ranking in terms of accuracy, reliability and quality (price too)
