For a long time I didn't know that TM weren't permanent in previous gens. I decided to play Platinum at some point since it has the Pokemons I like the most and I really felt the non permanent TMs in a bad way
You hit the points with Alola perfectly, additionally, I just think its underrated how local and “home-ey” the region feels. In other generations, the gym leaders and E4 members are so grandiose and their built up to be such a big deal, but in Alola, no matter their title, everyone feels like family or friend! I love it.
Yeah despite its criticism Gen VII really had a charming cast and really each island felt as if it was its own respectable community and culture of people.
Yea they really made all the important characters interact with us more so we get to know them better. I hope they rewrite the script for the DP remakes and make them the same way, but it's unlikely
It feels like weeks until I hear a moderately large pokemon youtuber say anything about the many pros of the mainline games instead of making several 10 minute videos going on about the few cons
@@saricubra2867 Fun fact for You:Pokémon Sun and Moon and Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are also the only Pokémon Games in which Your Parent have Their Own Rooms.
TurboVortexXD, it’s not Your House, But You and Your Parent’s House. Pokémon Sun and Moon and Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are also the only Pokémon Games in which Your Parent have Their Own Rooms.
One of my favorite underrated things were Team Skull Grunts. The way they always rhymed everything they wanted to say along with their wanna-be hard attitude was hilarious, made better by the fact that nobody in Alola takes them seriously. 😂 Most games you have the NPC’s cowering behind you for your help, but with Team Skull Grunts people were usually just mildly annoyed. Plasma was my favorite as a serious threat, but Skull takes the cake on comic relief.
I lost it when they started their lil dance and were like "aigh you know what! WE TAKIN THIS POKEMON TO RUIN YOUR TRIAL" and they could not find it lmao
@@aedd3307 the reason why was because of time constraints. We literally got all 649 Pokémon moving animations in battle in a 2D game! Think about that. BW2 couldn’t either because it was almost an entirely different game and on top of that they game us an amazing post game with ALL trainers having animations. At this point, Pokémon following you is almost impossible rn with the amount of Pokémon we have.
I have never had ONE single video make me want to replay EVERY single generation at the same time. You truly did it Ron, this video reminded me of many amazing features that i've forgotten about through the years, or simply overlooked due to pregained bias (damn you internet) - And you have made me want to go through all these games again, just to really focus on each of these aspects, and really get the most out of my adventure. This might be my favourite video by you so far :) Amazing work
The most underrated thing in pokemon imo was the black and white trading system. You could choose 3 Pokémon to trade and your partner could choose which one they wanted AND you had robust to communicate with them if you were doing it with a random person
And the IR trading! It was so much quicker to trade with the C Gear vs having to go to the union room, saving, talking to the other player, confirming you wanna trade, and then finally getting to trade. Luckily the kept it this simple in the 3DS games too
I would've stop playing pokemon, if i didn't watch your videos. The point of view you have on even the smallest aspect of pokemon made me return to this franchise. Thank you and keep up the good content
I really appreciated that Galar did something to really build up lore behind the gyms themselves and the culture surrounding the gym challenge. Past games had expanded on the gym leaders as characters and on gym mechanics. Sun and Moon created lore behind its own different gym-like mechanic, but it always gnawed at me how the gyms in previous games felt somehow isolated from a lot of the rest of the game. They sort of stayed as a purely gameplay oriented thing for a long time. Galar really made it clear how these things work and why they're built and I think the many fans coming to watch made it clear to me what felt off in previous iterations. The sense that other people were coming to watch these fights and challenges made it a lot more clear why people built these crazy gyms, and the fans already sitting in the stands to watch made it really feel like there were other people going through the gyms before and after you. Other games will likely have their own lore behind how their gyms came to be and why people participate in the league, but for Galar, it was the sense of community that made it feel alive. :)
Yes! Yes! That's the thing I love about Galar: the focus on the spetacle, how it draws inspiration from football (real football, not the American one) and the league arcs from the anime. The Gym Challenge is treated like larger than life events, it's part of the region's culture, and the Challengers each have their personal reasons to go on a Pokémon journey, their own legacies to fulfill. Finally the multiple rivals trope done right.
Thanks for this comment because I totally agree! This game made me feel like a Pokemon champion, not just a new trainer getting badges on my way to deal with the ongoing conflict in the region. Honestly, the first time I played Sword, it was a magical experience because of the culture surrounding the gym challenge that wasn't in other generations.
@@ad-skyobsidion4267 It’s hilarious how someone as battle-ready and childishly cheerful as Leon is more level-headed, logical, and especially has better common sense than guys like Steven(doesn’t actually do much to stop the villains besides help in 1 double battle), Lance(doesn’t even show up to any of the Team Rocket events besides 1 in the Lake of Rage and hidden hq, not even helping in the final event in Goldenrod town), and especially Cynthia, who does literally nothing to help you, not even battling the big boss Cyrus at least once, and acts as nothing more than an over glorified cheerleader for the endgame of the plot, seriously it’s the one thing I absolutely hate about Cynthia, and if she wasn’t one of my favorite/first Champion battles along with generally being portrayed as a cool person to hang out with along with being a mythology nut(which I completely and wholeheartedly enjoyed finding out since I’ve always been a massive fan of mythology in general), she would be my least favorite champion in all of Pokémon, even worse than Diantha, who at least gains some points in regards to her portrayal in the anime giving her justice as one of the 2 main people alongside Steven protecting all the civilians, which in my opinion is singlehandedly the most badass hero team-up I’ve ever seen in Pokémon. Leon is the only one who legitimately takes his role as the strongest trainer in Galar genuinely seriously, to the point of taking on Eternatus alone, and possibly even weakening it, all the while regularly taking on multiple Wild dynamaxed Pokémon alone. The guy truly cares about his region, more so than any other champion has, so he definitely got my respect for that, even if he wasn’t as tough as some other champions, like Gen-1 Blue(that f%#king Alakazam...), Cynthia(You all know exactly what I’m talking about when I say, that f#%king team in general...), and even Iris(Challenge Mode at its most difficult) of all people(that f%#king Hydreigon and especially that %#king Haxorus), he was still in my own opinion actually difficult and well rounded. His Charizard being a surprisingly way more difficult beast than Red’s own, since unlike Red(who in my opinion is actually one of the weakest champion battles gameplay wise, since 3 of his Pokémon, including his heaviest hitters Charizard and Blastoise, are weak to Electric type attacks, his front Pokémon gets one shot by Ground-type moves from any decently fast Pokémon(including multiple starters), and 2 of his Pokémon are weak to Fighting type moves(Snorlax and Lapras, with Lapras in particular being weak to 2 of the main types that cover most of Red’s team), and the only Pokémon that need coverage against them alone is Venusaur, who in return has multiple counters in Psychic, Fire, Flying, and/or Ice). Meanwhile, Leon’s Charizard actually has Coverage moves like Ancient Power(which he unfortunately got the boost for in my playthrough, so that was tough) and Solar Beam(which if it was in Dynamax, not Gigantamax, he would have absolutely destroyed all of its potential counters with one-turn Solar Beams alone), and this is not mentioning all of his other Pokémon, who are also pretty damn tough.
@@shawnzt4782 I think I know what you mean. Going in blind and feeling the build up towards your final battle against Leon (and actually being met with a decent challenge) was indeed a type of chills I have never before gotten from this franchise. This is probably rooted in what is putting so many older fans off from the franchise in recent years, but increasing focus on JRPG story mechanics in the sense that you're starting off from scratch and progressing through a character centric story to become the hero is personally the exact thing keeping me invested in the games. tbh I think a lot of these people could enjoy this too, it's just that the negative feedback loops they get from spending their days gossiping the games to death online inevitably sets them up for disappointment.
I guess gen 7's pose mechanic was a bit too underrated since it was left out. Located at the recycle plant is an NPC that knows what you've experienced and gets inspiration to teach you some different poses. It isn't just how you look in battle to another player as poses also change how you throw a Pokéball out in battle. There's a left-handed one, a carefree-esk throw, double hand underhand, even one where you jump and spin throw.

Nah, I liked them too. In my opinion, the next gen should have riding Pokémon and then roller blades, ad then a bicycle. Options are almost often better
@@sethoitae exactly! Lockstin actually had a fakemon that was a feminine feline based lucario counter park that was rollerblade themed and it would fit so much better
One major thing about Gen 8 that I think gets extremely overlooked is how much better accessibility to competitive play became. Unfortunately with official tournaments having been cancelled for almost a year now (and it will stay that way til at least September) we never really got to see those improvements fully in action
@@lordofcastamere9376 Maby for single, but for doble it's perfect, thanks to the 2 Pokémon of the format you coud lose your Dynamx realy Quickly, or waste It if you make the wrong moves.
The most underrated part of Kalos is how many extra mechanics are in that game. There’s perhaps the most to do in that game that feels separate and unique from just the core battling mechanics but the community decided none of that is relevant. Berry farming, learning new roller blading techniques, upgrading the Maison, getting a high fashion score, collecting wild battle items, the fun third person shooter minigames, the list goes on and on. There’s countless extra mechanics that I’ve found myself getting more and more fond of as time goes on, especially as people ignore them more and more and playing newer games that have much less to do than X and Y.
I literally just finished replaying X and Y and desperately wanna know what you mean when you're talking about the "third person shooter minigame" I think I'm missing out
@@TheRealJaydenJohnson super training. I just wanted to highlight how dramatically different it is and I don’t think anyone played it as its own minigame they just played it to grind stats. The version of it you can play with a Pokémon that already has maxed out stats is genuinely tricky for score attacking
Personally I thought the friend Safari was a great gimmick that encouraged multi-player and a feature that honestly should’ve stayed a competitive staple.
@@Galavantworks I agree with you that the Friend Safari was a cool idea but I was mostly talking about how X and Y added a ton of mechanics that feel outside of the scope of regular Pokemon mechanics. Friend Safaris - while very cool - are mechanically the same as most of the rest of the game so they don't really fit under the umbrella I was describing.
i was out of the loop when gen 7 was released. can i ask what people complained about and why everyone hated it so much? yeah the models are a bit washed out but.. that's it
@@snek7030 Definitely the handholding. For a lot of people, this kills the replay value of the gen 7 games. I even heard that some people didn't finish Sun and Moon because they were tired of getting stopped by someone every 20 seconds. Don't get me wrong, US and UM are my favorite Pokémon games and I didn't mind the handholding, but for some people it's just a drag.
Videos like this are a perfect example of why I'm subscribed to you. Pretty much every single thing that you talked about was something that I had never known about, like the flowers differing for each island in Alola, or took for granted, such as the dynamic route layouts of Kalos. I know that that was the point of this, but this video alone has given me a brand new appreciation even for games that I already loved and have a personal attachment to. I had forgotten all about Alola's side quests, and how impressed I was by the jump in graphics back then. It also made me realize that I probably tried to play ORAS at a time that just wasn't right for me, and that if I were to try and go back to it now, I could fully appreciate it for what it is instead of what it isn't. I'll bet that it's the same for X&Y, since I basically breezed through it, without taking the time to appreciate the little things. Sorry for getting all sappy and long winded, but thanks for this. It actually makes me a little emotional. You put so much care into looking at the better side of things. It's clear how much you love this franchise, and it's honestly infectious. This is easily my favorite video of yours. Thanks for all that you do.
I always hear about people going back and replaying Johto, or Hoenn, people wanting Sinnoh and Unova remakes, people arguing about Kanto and Galar, but I find it so sad that everyone stopped talking about Sun/Moon, and especially USUM. They're great games, with amazing characters and a new formula, but nobody even seems to notice them.
The problem with Alola is that they're hard to replay due to pacing and the constant hand-holding. The game desperately needs a New Game+ option that skips the tutorials and constant interruptions.
@@SockyNoob Yeah, with older gens and Galar most of the plot stuff can be skipped just by mashing "A" for a few seconds, I can replay Soul Silver forever and barely get interrupted whereas SuMo are infamous for halting the player.
Oh I love the bike theme. It sounds so anime-esque like it could be in any slice of life one. I've taken a lot of moments to just ride around Cyllage City just to listen to the bike theme.
I loved gen7 so much I began to feel guilty when I heard basically everybody hated them. But I stay true to my feelings, I fell in love with this region, these characters and Pokemon.
Changes will always bring controversy. People will split between loving it and hating it. But give them some time, and people should be able to judge new things more fairly. That's why the hate for gen V nowadays is not as big as back then.
You know what’s underrated about gen 7? The fact that it buffed old Pokémon like pelipper Torkoal gigalilth and vanilluxe all got their respective weather ability Swellow got a 25 BS point buff to special attack it is great that old Pokémon are buffed into usable mons it’s great
Im just gonna say this black and white 2 defined post game 30+ legendaries, side quests, addiotional battle o catching opportunities , remanats of team plasma , events, solid amount to do after beating the league, each legendary has its own technique in catching it like heatran you have to obtain the heat stone, cresclia the lunar wing, zekrom/reshiram you take their stone to a location to actually battle them, regi's involve a puzzzle you need 1 to get to the other, lota of locations and quests , join avenue was fun very under rated post game it'll take about a month or 2 to complete everthing
In my opinion *Kalos,* *Alola,* and *Galar* are the most underrated regions, where people focus way too much on the negative aspects. Meanwhile, *Kanto, Johto,* and *Sinnoh* are the regions that people tend to praise too much, and ignore their flaws. Finally I think, *Hoenn* and *Unova* get treated pretty fairly, people don't overpraise them, but still acknowledge how great they both are.
Yeh that Is because most peopole Who have a voice on the internet are adults Who started with those regions, when today Childrens Will have the Place of the today 20 years olds Who started with DPP, they are going to get a lot more credit
@@nathanwalker6284 Like the 1000000 HM, the orribile roaster of Pokémon even in Platinum (Who made 90% of the teams loock the exat same). Stupid things like fog, mud and snow Who slow you Dow for no reason and a realy week cast of characters. I least those are the things Who generaly are disliked about Sinnoh.
@@nathanwalker6284 I mean, these are just my opinions, but off the top of my head I think Sinnoh as a region is sorely lacking in memorable locations, the new Pokémon generally aren't that good, most of the cast is pretty boring and forgettable, the game generally just moves too slowly, as well as a host of more minor flaws (over reliance on HMs, some Pokémon are way too much of a hassle to find, etc.). And this is just me talking about Platinum, Diamond/Pearl also suffered from tons of other flaws, like the HP bar moving at a snail's pace, and the worst regional dex in the series. That's not to say I think Platinum is by any means bad, in fact I think it's great, and one of the better games in the series overall. But the fanbase has a habit of giving it a bit more credit than it deserves, and overlooking all the aspects where it doesn't quite deliver.
Oh thank you so much for including the GB Sounds! That is probably my favorite item in the entire franchise because I'm such a sucker for music. I absolutely love the idea of being able to switch to the original 8-bit music at any time so you could feel the sense of nostalgia of the original games, and the refreshing features of the remake.
I think for hoenn something I rarely see talked about is how ambitious some wild pokemon encounters and concepts were. Castform changing forms, Keckleon being invisible, the first ever alien legendary, the Regis, all the different Spindas, Milotic, Shedinja and more. They really set a precedent to how different pokemon could be obtained in those games...
I like how Kanto you can skip gyms and choose your own paths to cities. I also like how the region was intertwined geographically with the Rock Tunnel, Diglett Tunnel, Underground tunnels, bicycle road connecting the cities.
Just because something has become popular 10 years after its release, doesn't mean it wasn't underrated for 90% of its existence. Plus those videos only highlight a small amount of battle themes, while all of the various details I mentioned are rarely appreciated/ mentioned in those memes.
@@truegreen7 i agree, i meant to say "it's not so underrated *now*". i do think that the dynamic changes and seasonal variants of the songs are underrated compared to the themes everyone makes memes of
For me that I went straight from y to ultramoon and have roleplaying it only at night in bed with no interference whatsoever, Alola felt like a life experienced, like I actually lived there. I didn't even noticed the hand-holding, I was just happy to interact with so many people so frequently.
Truegreen, I grew up watching you. Hearing about my favorite games with alola, kalos, and especially unova brought tears to my eyes. Thank you for all that you do. I now feel the need to just hop in a discord call and gush. Again, thank you for helping me remember some childhood innocence.
Ah yes, contests and the pokeathlon. The hours spend there are so deserved, what great features! I wish everybody would love them and would join in multiplayer
God the list of multi-path routes and unnecessary places in gen 4 and 5 make me wanna just replay them all over again. Reminded me why they are my favorites all over again
I absolutely agree. People say that 4th and 5th games are slow, well they're not. There always something happen in every part of the game, and there is always time to explore routes, that are AMAZING. And, the Pokémon introduced in those regions, especially Unova, are fantastic (not Audino).
@@caterpie3333 unova has some misses but it has some cool designs too. Samurott (would have been better if it wasn't an otter that turned into a sea lion but whatever.), Escavilier, Sawk and Throh, mandabuzz and Braviary, Haxorous, Hydreigon, Basculin, Herder, Victini, Ferrothorn, Zoroark, Timburr and Conkeldur, the Darmanitan line, Male Unfeazant. They had cool designs.
Pokémon Let's Go has the best art style, visuals and graphics in the whole series, in my opinion. The shaders are absolutely beautiful. I think Let's Go did the Gen 6 graphics justice.
To this day I still think Gen 5 has the best games. The generations before Black and White just feel too outdated and slow, and the new games after that look like they're just catered for kids. Unova in my opinion has the perfect balance of difficulty, story, layout, and aesthetics.
Agree 100%. I stopped playing for a few year because I was in high school in the early 2000s and for some reason for 2 years I cared what people think, especially my girlfriends. Now I'm 34 and I got my girlfriend into anime and pokemon. Now this dime piece watches more anime then I do. A fact her mother abhors ha ha ha.
i believe gen 7 has the best games, they have a decent story, decent difficulty, extremely underrated and different (in a good way) games, they're definitely in between the best generations, but not many people recognizes it. then meanwhile we have gen 4 overshadowing everything else.
You know what's underrated? Your incredible use of gameplay footage throughout every one of your videos. Man, the time you must spend recording these clips...it makes the videos not only interesting to watch on top of your commentary but also nostalgic and filling. Love it.
Another underrated aspect of Alola is that you can actually choose how to pose when throwing your ball!! What’s even MORE underrated is how (as one myself) YOU CAN CHOOSE TO BE LEFT HANDED!!! It’s something I wish they kept in game as a permanent feature!
Ever since Pokemon announced they were going to remake Diamond and Pearl, I’ve been replaying the original Diamond. Mostly for nostalgia, wanting to try a Nuzlocke, and I actually never finished it so I want to complete it before trying Brilliant Diamond. But ever since watching your videos, now I want to replay every Pokémon game I have in order to just relive nostalgia and appreciate what I didn’t notice the first time. It’s been a long time since I’ve been excited for Pokemon, so thank you for your contribution! :D
I think pokemon gave it all for unova. When it became the lowest selling pokemon game. They may have taught we don't have time for so much content and made the future games not so diverse
unova were my favourite games. i still like sw/sh but the fact that galar sold more copies is baffling. The communities fuck up of not buying gen 5 and buying the worse games (They arent bad, just worse imo) left us with games people keep complaining about. game freak doesnt need to TRY anymore in order to sell a game. its like disney, where they dont give a shit about what they are making and make a ton of cash. community fucked up, bought worse games over the better ones, and now we are left with people complaining, yet consuming the products anyway
Definitely the most underrated thing to me is the fact that in heartgold and soulsilver, you were able to lock the running shoes on so that you didn't have to hold 'b' at all times to run.
I really think Alola as a whole deserves a lot more appreciation, particularly in regards to the original games. Sun and Moon were the last Pokémon games I truly enjoyed to the level I wish I could enjoy games to, and it’s also a very nostalgic experience for me as it heavily reminds me of my favorite Pokémon game of all time. Props if you can figure it out. The Ultra games aren’t bad either but for some reason I never had the drive to finish them...
The way you enter the pokemon league in kanto was great in the way you flashed your badges one by one. It made each one feel uniquely special and relive your entire journey.
Crown Tundra because of the exploration and legendary hunting and just amount of content it had made some of my favourite Pokémon memories of all time, the DLC is underrated
Love the shoutout to Amie and Camp. I love the shot at immersion with both and while I do still feel there could have been an expansion on the idea and the friendship bonuses I think should be able to be toggled, I still love love bonding with my Pokmon.
I agree! It's a different experience when you get to know each Pokemon's personalities and their relationships with each other that when you use them in battle, you don't just see a tyranitar, you see your shy tyranitar battling alongside your social hitmontop for example.
It needs improvement though, there feels like nothing to do there other than the same throw ball make some curry and wait for your pokemon to become self aware and make their own memes
@@myboytylerb Ok, if we are just adding to camp here is what I suggest 1. Add some personality quirk or animation the Pokémon makes, I want to see a personality conveyed through the Pokémon other than happy 2. I want to see Pokémon interacting more, if they have conflicting personalities they might argue and have banter, like how in Animal Crossing 1 the villagers were mean, I want their interactions to be something like that. 3. Add more food, I want to see different options for foods other than curry, it feels so limiting to what I can make, Marshmellows, Pokébeans, Poképuffs, just add 1 or 2 more options so I can do different minigames when making something. 4. Remove 3/4 of all of the combinations of curry, I want quality over quantitiy in Camp, If I get more variety in expression of both the Pokémon and the Player, maybe if its spicy the player reacts in a painful look despire enjoying the Curry. 5. The toys are great but I would prefer if there was a Bone, What if there was a laser, there are just a lot of possibilities you can do with it outside of BALL. Basically all I want is for things to feel less repetitive, all the other stuff is a bonus, if I get more variety in something and it not feeling repetitive that easily fixes a lot of problems I had with it. These might seem too ambitious but these can be gradually added with each game.
@@mr.preston1632 Those are some pretty cool ideas. I especially like the idea of Pokemon having distinct personalities and interactions with others. It would make them feel more alive. One thing I would do is bring petting back. It was fun seeing where a Pokemon likes and dislikes being rubbed. As for everything else you pretty much hit the nail on the head for most of everything I want from a better Camp experience rather than getting bored of the same few things happening. I just want an expanded, more quality Pokemon Camp experience cause I really feel like there's more they can do with this great idea.
The one remake i once wanted to have besides sinnoh was the unova games because the gen 5 games were SOOOO underrated and not many people talk about it

Honestly, I absolutely adored the musicals in gen 5. Since I started with White version, I'm glad Unova is finally getting the recognition it deserves. It always aggravated me a little when people would just go "lol trash bag" when talking about it. I kind of miss gyms having unique music, honestly.
I really want something as directly positive as Pokemon Amie in Gen 6 to return. Pokemon Camp almost got there, but you can't pet your Pokemon, just wave the bell toy or throw a ball-- although Pokemon Camp did let your Pokemon play with each other in real time, which I love. It's just that them petting your Pokemon is the most basic way of bonding, and I wish we had them back.
The biggest thing underrated aspect of Gen V is really the version exclusives features that they offer, still being the most diverse and ambitious to date. The fact that B2/W2 was still able to expand on the already massive region that is Unova honestly adds to the replay-ability of the original B/W campaign even more, something incredibly underrated in sister games. As a New Yorker I often wonder if Gen 5 were to expand into the Bronx/Staten Island areas of North West and South East Unova. They could make new version exclusive home towns add new version exclusive Gym leaders to give a completely version exclusive campaign for each game. That would be amazing.
I just wanna say i really appreciate how you pay attention to in game routes and how they matter for a game experience. Tbh if pokemon ever had me direct I would design banger after banger routes w crazy environments but really well flowed together and well paced
I want to defend Hop in galar. He’s one of the few rivals who go through tons of subtle character development and later is an actual threat as a rival. Also. He’s got cool style.
Unpopular opinion: I liked Pokestar Studios. I know some people don't and I can kinda understand, especially with the part of the game where you have to see a really bad movie, but other than that I think it's really enjoyable to star in a short film where there are different outcomes depending on how well you did during the filming. It's a really creative way to use the whole battling mechanic
I remember getting to Brycen Man Strikes Back Harder and having to think really hard to OHKO 6 other Pokémon in 6 turns with 1 Lucario, it was exhilarating. I also loved the star entrance thing and was super easy to get with one particular movie, it's sad it didn't stack with the other entrance quirks like N's Pokémon and shinies.
I like it too. The amount of items you get after getting fans is amazing. It’s a great way to grind items. You even get to talk to plasma grunts after you get a certain amount of fans. I still have not gotten to the point were I completed all the movies with ratings and becoming a superstar. I really wished that p star studios was optional because people would like it a whole lot more.
Ron I want to thank you for your videos every time I watch them I get such a wawe of happiness and nostalgia and I am really thankfull for it gen 5 is defintly under rated and I am glad somone enjoys it as much as I do so thank you again
When he mentioned that gen 5 had the most optional areas in pokemon, it got me thinking about optional areas in other pokemon games, and more specifically how a surprisingly a huge chunk of hoenn consist of optional areas. its not even something i really think about when i play gen 3 but here they all are. optional areas : route 105 route 107 route 108 route 117 route 115 route 123 route 125 route 129 route 130 RS route 131 RS route 132 route 133 route 134 trickmasters house mirrage tower E new mauville abandoned ship sealed champer + regi caves shoal cave sky pillar RS desert underpass E verdenturf town pacifidlog town safari zone trainer hill E Battle Frontier/battle tower
more optional stuff in: route 104 small route 103 route 116 small route 106 route 109 route 110 route 111 route 114 small route 119 route 115 petalburg woods granite cave fiery path mt. pyre abandoned ship It also made me wonder why i didn't really think about Hoenn having so much optional stuff. But after some thinking, i think the reason why is another very overlooked thing about gen 3, spesifically the GBA versions of the games. These games have been made to run very fast, the gba games are the only pokemon games to run at 60fps, and hoenn has the fastest running speed, biking speed and surfing speed as well. Hoenn doesn't have the gates that a lot of the other games use as loading screens either speeding things up even more. this all comes together and makes it so getting from one point to another in Hoenn takes way less time then any other game in the francise. The designers of RSE knew this, and decided to make the region very interconnected with a lot of areas looping back into each other. Then when the game tells you to go a place you have to decide what path you want to take and if you want to explore a bit on the way. examples of this are the meteor falls to mt. Chimney, gym 4 to gym 5 and the gym 5 to gym 6 stretches with the gym 5 to gym 6 one being the biggest one where you have around 4 different paths you can take to get there, all with new stuff to explore. Another piece of design that makes it so i don't think of these as optional areas is because of how much they tease them to you before you are able to explore them. the desert of route 111, new mauville and the waterfalls in meteor falls are all shown to you way before you are able to go there. the best example of this is the mr. briney's boat ride. which shows you all of the southern water routes, items and all + the abandoned ship. making it so you can't help going to check at least a couple of them out when you have the oportunity to. So in conclusion i think one of the most overlooked things about RSE is how much the region and game is designed towards ease of exploration.
Lately I’ve been thinking we all get antsy about Pokémon iterations because they’re all unique and stand alone, rather than trying to constantly one up the last installment like most franchises.
(I'm only now just playing gen 8, but ) I love the whole tournament based gym challenge of gen 8, idk, something about big spectacle battles and the world reacting to you beating the gyms seems fulfilling, like, just NPC's I walk by tell me to go beat the final gym for example, right as you walk up to it there are crowds surrounding it, its something vie always wanted, it reminds me of the anime like I watched as a kid, although there are a few rough edges that could be better, and quick side note, team yell may not have been the best team in my opinion, but I like how they are just trainers, trying to support someone from their rougher town, I think its quite nice to not have them be this evil team, just a good heart and wanting the best for Marnie, despite how annoying they are.
Zangoose is my favourite Pokémon and it's so hard to get merch for it :/ it's either really Dodgy looking or just straight up doesn't exist :( I caught a shiny zangoose in Pokémon go and it's been my pride and joy since lmao :')
I have the same problem with my favorite, Silvally lol. Despite being a legendary and being connected to a big character in the games, there’s not an official plush to be found of it
As far as I remember, the different evil teams and the fact that one of them was basically becoming your ally was the only thing I really appreciated about Ruby back then when I played it.
This is why Hoenn is one of my favorite regions. I feel like so many fantastic things we have now originated from there. Honestly this was a fabulous video and it was nice to see someone talk about the things that have been under-appreciated in my favorite franchise
I think people forget that Gen 5 gave us permanent TM’s. Which is by FAR one of the best things Gen 5 has done for the franchise as a whole

@@redwood.. I appreciate but I have no intention to make a UA-cam channel.
True, this channel really is a one of a kind
In my opinion it makes sense why Leon faces the problems first why would you trust a 10 year old to deal with them
Thanks for this comment because I totally agree!

Ron in this video: I'm about to name so many routes
@@sylvia4232 I suppose I should also mention the linearity (although the linearity and hand holding didn't bug me that much really)
Gen 7 is number two behind gen 5 for me. I love the Alola games to pieces and will defend them to my last breath.
People do NOT talk enough about Kalos’ music. Like, route 15? The boutique theme? The bike theme? All magnificent.
The gen 6 gym theme is one of my favorite songs in all of Pokémon
Like Ron said, it is very good but multiple Gens before and after it kinda overshadow it. I think that that sentiment is pretty agreeable.
In my opinion gen 6 has the best music out of all games.
Gen 6’s music is decent but it’s sometimes over shadowed by the one gen that was like “ Screw it. Take some music “ aka gen 5
I will never understand the rampant Alola hate. It doesn't make any sense to me.
My take away is that gen 5 has the best change; story, music and maybe character design wise
And character/pokemon sprites. it's a personal preference..heehee

I think it suits being a quaint village better honestly, but true a huge glowing mushroom city sounds amazing!
Agreed. How about Wyndon though? That city is one of the absolute biggest disappointments in the game.
@@hlewis5217 So true.
Definitely one of my favorite videos you’ve ever made. Got me so excited to replay literally every generation
Fax 🔥👏
Gen 5 gang
Agreed
i believe gen 7 has the best games, they have a decent story, decent difficulty, extremely underrated and different (in a good way) games, they're definitely in between the best generations, but not many people recognizes it. then meanwhile we have gen 4 overshadowing everything else.
You know what's underrated? Your incredible use of gameplay footage throughout every one of your videos. Man, the time you must spend recording these clips...it makes the videos not only interesting to watch on top of your commentary but also nostalgic and filling. Love it.
Another underrated thing about Galar are the new battle models, for Scorbunny, Mr Rime and Regieleki.
Another underrated aspect of Alola is that you can actually choose how to pose when throwing your ball!! What’s even MORE underrated is how (as one myself) YOU CAN CHOOSE TO BE LEFT HANDED!!! It’s something I wish they kept in game as a permanent feature!
i’m so glad unova is getting the love it so deserves
I mean, the lowest selling pokemon still sold a BUNCH of copies, so it's not like it was a complete failure
Gen 8 gym leader music is fantastic. Even now hearing it gets my pumped
Let's be honest here
It's the best gym theme up there with Kalos and Johto.
@@mr.preston1632 it definitely needs more improvement! I want to know what you would add to it to make it more enjoyable
@@myboytylerb Ok, if we are just adding to camp here is what I suggest
1. Add some personality quirk or animation the Pokémon makes, I want to see a personality conveyed through the Pokémon other than happy
A 22 minute truegreen7 video is just the kind of relaxation and joy I needed today. No joke, I’m so happy.
The one remake i once wanted to have besides sinnoh was the unova games because the gen 5 games were SOOOO underrated and not many people talk about it
Might get dislikes.....but I rather not have a gen 5 remake.....just so that they are special..... especially after that horrible display of graphics by gf in dp remakes
bruh
You probably don't lurk in internet often or didnt have anything else to say but holy pants is gen 5 talked abt a lot to the point its super annoying. They are the reasons gen 8 is overshitted upon.
@@devildynamite7454 i guess I rather have a BW3 following legends arceus style. Maybe even showing the original unova dragonx
@@rafaelroriz6622 true same here.....maybe it doesn't matter cause I can't play it cause I can't buy games....but someday...I hope....some emulator will be out for switch....which my potato pc supports graphics of
In the sinnoh remakes I hope they add a “camp” feature like they had in galar, except it’ll be a place where you can practice moves with your Pokémon so they can get ready for contests, and otherwise raise friendship/confidence/beauty/ and exp
I liked the Tama shout out, I love it when Poketubers interact and mentions other Poketubers, makes it feel like it’s truly a connected community
Take a shot every time he says "underrated" to become an irl ghost type
Great analysis! I started playing with Gen 1 Kanto but Hoenn will always have my heart, I just loved the weather and the complexity of the routes.
The original goldenrod theme in gold and silver will always be my favourite track
That song is so nostalgic to me
The biggest thing underrated aspect of Gen V is really the version exclusives features that they offer, still being the most diverse and ambitious to date.
That would be amazing.
gen 2- having different sprites between gold and silver
I just wanna say i really appreciate how you pay attention to in game routes and how they matter for a game experience. Tbh if pokemon ever had me direct I would design banger after banger routes w crazy environments but really well flowed together and well paced
It’s crazy how simply by u rlly liking Gen 5 I want to like every video u post lol
It would've been more liked if it didn't take half an hour to get through the mandatory tutorial
By the way I am not exaggerating
Moral of the video: There is no bad Pokémon game.
I like how Ron just basically listed the features of Generation 5.
Ron I want to thank you for your videos every time I watch them I get such a wawe of happiness and nostalgia and I am really thankfull for it gen 5 is defintly under rated and I am glad somone enjoys it as much as I do so thank you again

He mentioned the no grid system!
When he mentioned that gen 5 had the most optional areas in pokemon, it got me thinking about optional areas in other pokemon games, and more specifically how a surprisingly a huge chunk of hoenn consist of optional areas. its not even something i really think about when i play gen 3 but here they all are.
optional areas

route 107

Battle Frontier/battle tower
more optional stuff in:
route 104 small
route 103

route 106
route 109
route 110
route 111
route 114 small
route 119
route 115
petalburg woods
granite cave
fiery path
mt. pyre
abandoned ship
It also made me wonder why i didn't really think about Hoenn having so much optional stuff.
Dang this comment is as underrrated as hoenn
I would like to thank Ron for mentioning Tama Hero (formerly known as TamashiiHiroka) a lot. An OG poketuber.
You can hear in his voice how much fun he’s having with the video. That’s awesome.
Don't mind me just adding this to my "Best Videos Of All Time" playlist :)
Lately I’ve been thinking we all get antsy about Pokémon iterations because they’re all unique and stand alone, rather than trying to constantly one up the last installment like most franchises.
YES!!! I love talking about underrated things, ESPECIALLY IN POKEMON.
Haxorus is in the thumbnail.
Haxorus is underrated confirmed
14:39 I just had to think of this when I saw you rollerblading here, I think how fun the rollerblades were/are to use, I love that!
You know what else is underrated? *Ponyta*
*Or* *anything* *that* *isn't* *Pikachu*
@Maadhava Selvan A My first shiny was Poliwag :)

Genwunners only appreciate the first 2 minutes and 28 seconds of this video.
Yep.
Zangoose is my favourite Pokémon and it's so hard to get merch for it :/ it's either really Dodgy looking or just straight up doesn't exist :( I caught a shiny zangoose in Pokémon go and it's been my pride and joy since lmao :')
Agreed. One of my top favorites. Trying to find a decent plush or anything is impossible it feels like. Don’t get it, he’s so flippin’ cool
Same it's my home gen, but still prefer 5 more for many reasons he listed, but even so he forget to mention Unovas Entralink & Join Avenue.
