Digging Quartz Crystal Cluster Plates: Last Haul of The Year
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 жов 2024
- I continue to work and dig out quartz crystal plates from a spot I discovered over 2 years ago. With winter and snow fall occurring in the higher elevations, this is my last haul of crystals from this spot for the year.
A lot of work and time goes into digging these crystals out of the hard rock which is partially shown in this video along with the crystals themselves. The crystals are occurring in a seams/veins in the rock and some are packed in with clay and iron oxides which have to be cleaned away to reveal the shiny crystal faces.
I hope you enjoy this video

I believe the rust colored coating at the end of the video is called limonite. Looks like a heavy coating. It can be reduced with acid. I use oxalic acid. Some people call the limonite coated crystals tangerines. Good stuff!
Thanks for sharing these very interesting videos
Glad you like them!
Awesome finds!! That seam is really opening up and the crystals sure are getting bigger!! Thanks for sharing the dig😁
I hope they keep getting bigger. Thanks for watching.
ask Santa for a cordless leaf blower. you won't need to hunt blind thru muck to get your crystals.
dude right on!!!! great finds man!!! cant wait to see what else comes out of there :)
Just have to wait until then end of spring and into summer to get back up there.
Cool pieces! My friend is lucky enough to have a spot which loads of milky skeletal and artichoke quartz in the creek in his backyard and we always find loads of those closed off seams! I just rockhound and know a little bit about geology but I’m assuming it means we are very close to finding some bigger pieces!
I would love to have a place to dig crystals on my property, that's really cool.
@@GeoForge thanks! I love your videos since you definitely seem very experienced in geology so it helps me understand where to search. All the pieces I pull out are quite decomposed and not very gemmy, but the gemmy quartz is next on my list!
Awesome quartz specimens my friend!!
Amazing video, thank you for sharing it with us!!
Wildfire season really sucked this year and really put a damper on things.
That's a good hole you got going there. Next summer it would be fun to really open it up some. You got some really nice points.
I'm hoping we get a good snowpack this year to keep the drought and fire season down. I'm thinking about investing into some special tools to make it easier to break the rock away. Looking forward to finding more for sure.
@@GeoForge Cordless rotohammer?
@@CurrentlyRockhounding Yes, if I can find one for the right price or one that'll do the job.
Awesome quartz specimens!
I'm looking forward to finding more next year!
I am from pakistan i am also mine owner of mica , silica, feldspar &quartz
Nice clusters, I’m giving some clusters away soon, just wanted to invite you to a giveaway
Thanks! I'd be interested in this giveaway, sounds fun.
Awesome videos and very informative! Good finds too! Question...if you find a milky quartz vein, could clear quartz points be along the vein too? Or do milky and clear grow separately? I'm fairly new
That is a good question. It depends, I have found at least 3 different versions of quartz crystal in this spot. The smaller crystals tend to be clear, the larger ones are milky, and the other group is cover in black oxides. I can't tell if they are all part of the same vein or from different veins in the same spot. I have never seen milky and clear quartz points right next to each other. I'm not saying they don't but I've never seen it. But as mentioned and seen in this spot, you can have different types of quartz within close proximity to each other.
How did you know to dig there? Appreciate your videos! I enjoy watching!
There was a few things that told me to dig in that location but the main one was the amount of float quartz on the surface that had crystal on them. I was filming the day I found it and I have a video of it if your interested ----> ua-cam.com/video/gncbWDEApZs/v-deo.html
@@GeoForge thank you! That’s amazing. I’d be so stoked to find the float you found! Looking forward to more videos from this pocket next year
How likely are you to find crystal points if there is a large presence of vein quartz on the surface ? for my area I constantly here to dig 30 degrees to the pegmatite for crystal pockets, can you translate that into plain English?
Just because there is a large amount of vein quartz does not always mean there will be crystals. The same thing applies to pegmatites and pockets within pegmatites are rare and hard to find. To put it simply, crystals form under the right circumstances and will vary from one location to the next depending on the geology. I wont be able to tell you how likely you are to find crystals but looking where quartz is abundant is a good start. I wish you Luck.
How you clean the oxidation?
There are a couple different ways, you can soak them in iron out, vinegar, or a stronger acid like muriatic acid.
