FELLAS THE OIL USED AT THE AMSOIL CHANGE WAS 5W20 NOT 5w30 so the shear was not as bad as suspected
But was still not as good as Penzoil Platinum which did better under heat testing
And mobil the same way it did jot do as good under heat testing
PPU - was right in spec

The range for 5w20 viscosity @ 100C is 5.60 to 9.29, the amsoil scored 8.52, very high in the upper range of correct oil grade. While pennzoil was 9.74 in a 9.1 to 11.3 range, closer to the lower end. And heavier oil also has a higher flashpoint, but I do believe pennzoil has a higher flashpoint which is great for high performance hot engines. So by the results with different weights, the amsoil actually seems better imho for the average vehicle, but def not cost wise.

We routinely did SOAP sampling on engines and gearboxes when I was in the Air Force (Spetrometric Oil Analysis Program). We had one engine on an H-53 "make oil", as it was overflowing the reservoir in the cabin. (Used to pump up replenishment oil in flight). No one really had a clue as to where the extra oil was coming from so it was ignored 2-3 months. Pre and postflight inspections are done with cue cards in hand, so when the card said check to see that reservoir was full...yeah, it was full. Waddaya expect from an 18yo airman 6 months out of high school. Somebody finally decided to take an oil sample and found that it was 99% jet fuel with a dash of engine lube. Turned out that a seal between the fuel control mounted on the engine, via the quill shaft that drove the fuel control from the geartrain internal to the engine was allowing high(er) pressure fuel to migrate into the oil system. Even tho the engine was running normally and metals were within limits, the engine was pulled. You might remember, the old school automotive fuel pumps mounted on the engine block would sometimes rip a diaphram and allow gasoline to go into the oil pan.

But its nice to hear someone with much more knowledge than myself validate & agree with what I experienced as well.To me there will always be pros and cons when comparing any two given products.Amsoil has its high points and lows as well as any other oil.But for me,,,Ill stick to 3,000 mile oil changes and stay with Pennzoil Ultra.I also use Napa Platinum oil filters.I use magnets on the filter and the pan drain plug and so far have never found ferris particles. And my Blackstone reports always come back saying lots of life still left in the oil.Enjoyed watching and learning and as always great vid.My condolences to you and your family.Have a safe travel home.

As far as this video: right now I'm using Pennzoil Platinum Euro 0W-40. I'd like to try the ULTRA Platinum 0W-40, but they are not on the VW 502/505 list. It seems the ULTRA could provide more TBN and cleanliness than Platinum. Oddly, VW still lists Castrol 5W-30 Euro with its AP SL as approved oil for this Audi. I'd be surprised if it provides anything as good as the non VW approved ULTRA Platinum 0W-40. Go figure.

Since the Amsoil tested was a 20 weight, the centistoke measurement was right where they t needed to be, so it didn’t lose viscosity at all! If the Pennzoil Ultra was also a 20 weight, then it actually thickened to a 30 weight by the centistoke measurement. If it was a 30 weight tested, then it thinned somewhat and was on the low end of a 30 weight, nearly losing grade.

    3. FEELINGS are not part of oil analysis as an engineering discipline.
    4. It appears the engine has high miles on it with pre existing cylinder wear.... the fuel trim is a bit rich... cross hatches when measured will not meet spec for new engine patterns....if this has beem untouched since new.

I had a bit of a bad experience with pennzoil once, can't recall what type of oil it was and it was probably close to 10 years ago. Might have been the semi-synthetic blend or something. I usually do go with full synthetic everytime but it definitely wasn't the platinum. But the car was also pretty clapped out. Sort of turned me off of Pennzoil tho. But I've only heard good things about pennzoil platinum. Pretty much any full synthetic imo is good oil. If the engine is tired or sludged up, high mileage, etc. Just change the oil more frequently like 3,000 miles for the first two oil changes. I've been using valvoline full synthetic in all my vehicles that's my current favorite. Just off hand I think it has a slight edge on mobile 1. Slightly more quiet at idle, etc. It's also slightly cheaper than mobile 1. I prefer to get all my oil and filters at walmart, valv full synthetic and fram ultra synthetic has been my go to combo for years now quite pleased with them.

Ended up with lifter tap as well as start up chair rattle and running chain tap. Gave up on the Mobil-1, dumped in SuperTech full Synthetic (5W-30 regular version) noises greatly reduced but still present, added 1/3 a quart of Hy-Per Lube Oil Supplement to the ST oil and eliminated chain noise, start up rattle greatly reduced. Other vehicle, same year/make/model/miles same noise issues on M-1 switched to Castrol Edge 0W-40 resulting in all noises gone including start up rattle, chain, and running silky smooth. Even Quaker State Full Synthetic ran much better than any M-1 did. Haven't tried Pennz Plat-Ultra but might some time although so far the Castrol Edge 0W-40 give me no reason to. Still might do it as a comparison though.

It's because Warren got bought out by a private equity company owned by the family that inherited the Hyatt hotel chain, one of whom was commerce secretary under Obama. Shortly after that buyout is when the the SuperTech prices started to climb. Used to be that SuperTech Full Synthetic was about $10 cheaper for 5 quart jug than the big name brands such as Mobil-1, Pennzoil, etc.. but after 3 price hikes they are now the same or more than the big brands. Same thing happened with Amazon Basics oil. I'm guessing in the case of Costco they are either selling through backstock or they are using it as a loss-leader which would make sense but definitely was disappointed to see that Warren had sold out.

@@matthewwatson572 yeah, I tried to convince myself to get some Amsoil, I guess I am just too cheap as I do short oil change intervals anyway. I inherited a truck from my dad and just did the first oil change since owning it. Come to find out he had paid $100 for the guy to not even change the oil and break the plug seal at 5k miles. Luckily I changed early at 7500 for peace of mind. Still pissed break in oil went that long.

Doing an oil change sometime pretty soon. Picked up some Castrol Edge high mileage 5quarts $21.95 on sale, slapping on a Fram ultra oil filter, also picked up a Fram extra guard air filter. Picked up a cabin filter also.
