This is so well done! I havent really touched any survey since 2013 and I've been looking at every resource I can before starting up a new project in a couple weeks. Thanks for the work you put into this video!
The comment about the X2 mod going out of production got my attention, and caused me to spend a couple hours refreshing my knowledge about implementing that sort of gadget. After all, the "CaveSniper" website doesn't even exist anymore and last I was aware there were no plans to make any more Shetland Attack Ponies.
Excellent video. Thanks for the discussion on the one- vs. two-eye methods. I've been trying to remind myself how to use one of these Suunto compasses recently, and am remembering from my caving days that I really have trouble getting the same number twice when using both eyes. I'm glad to hear I am justified in sticking to the one-eye method.
Mark and Ed are awesome! If you're just looking for a laser rangefinder, then you just need something that will measure distance (probably up to 50-60m). There are 20m models that is a little too short a range. You don't need any of the other bells and whistles that come on most models. Either Bosch or Leica make good units, but I like the build quality, size, and function of Leica a bit better, even though they're typically slightly more expensive. It's hard to beat the Disto D1 for value (about $72 on Amazon), but if I were buying one today I'd probably get the Disto e7100i for it's small size.
Great summary. Top notch
Derek, great video! I started on the Brunton Pocket Transit in the late ‘70’s. Now have the Suuntos.
I'm working on a Brunton Pocket Transit tutorial also. Maybe by the end of the week.

Kayver Outdoors You’re very welcome!
I love how at min 01:03 you can see the compass dial move ever so slightly as the camera dollies in...
This is a well done and valuable video. Thanks, Derek!
Thanks Scott! I'm doing a short video on the Sight Light Shields. Probably out this week. Great product!

Hi Derek, I have SUUNTO KB-14 with a lot of liquid missing. Is it a special liquid inside? What can I top it up with?
Got a recommendation on a simple laser rangefinder from Bosch or Leica? BTW, Mark and Ed had nice things to say about you 😁
