Our review of the Panasonic Lumix GX850. See our comparison with the GX85 here: mirrorlesscomparison.com/pana...
Best review I've seen so far. Clear and concise. Not muddled with high end jargon and critic.
Thanks a lot, this has made my decision much easier.
Been a happy GM5 user for over 2 years now, and looking for an upgrade now. I agree about GX85 - it's more powerful and currently has crazy discounts and deals, BUT. It's bigger - and noticeably so. So as much as I wanted a better camera, may still go with this purely due to the size, which is crucial when traveling. Would rather take more shots with a simpler camera than fewer with an advance one.
P.S. thank you for a great review!
Great review! Thanks.
Great review, thank you :)
Very clear and concise review. You missed the 5min limit on 4K but I don't think anyone would ever use this camera for serious vlogging. I have both this camera and a GX9. While the GX9 has IBIS and mediocre viewfinder it is larger and considerably heavier than the GX800. As an only camera i'd choose GX80/GX9 but as a pocketable take anywhere camera this is definitely the best choice. The pancake zoom it comes with is optically stabilised. Match that with a small fast prime in another pocket and you're sorted with a capable camera that you don't notice you're carrying. There is no perfect camera, there is always a compromise. Now 5 years later you can pick up GX800s for a bargain price so they are ideal as an extra camera if you already use MFT but I wouldn't want it as my only camera. For good reason the GM1, which is slightly smaller but less capable than this camera is still popular.
Thank you very much for your helpful review. How about taking selfies with the Vario 12-32mm? Do they look "natural" or is there any distortion? Or put it another way: Is the 12-32mm lens sufficient or do I need another additional lens?
Good criticism and you are on target about it being overpriced.
Great video
I'm so glad that you reviewed this camera - I've been quite interested in the GX850 since discovering it about a month ago. With 4K photo modes, are you able to set the shutter speed and aperture, or is it fully automatic? And how do you find the wheel on the back for setting the manual controls? And are there any plans on doing a review on the 12-32mm kit lens, or the other pancake micro 4/3 lenses (which I think would be perfect for this camera)? Great review as always :)
You can control the exposure manually with 4K Photo using the control wheel on the back. As for the 12-32mm, I am not sure we're planning a review of the lens but we used it many times and it's a decent performer. Obviously it's very compact and it's nice that it starts from 12mm rather than 14mm like other kit lenses.
Mathieu Gasquet thanks for answering :) here in Australia it's got the GF8 at approx $100 less, and the GX85 at approx $150 more currently. I like that the GX85 has IBIS (I like primes, and they tend to not be stabilized), but then I lose the compactness that drew me to micro 4/3 in the first place. Did you miss not having IBIS much when you used the GX850?
nice review
Hi thanks for the review. I've been waiting for more reviewers to look at this camera, so am glad you finally have. Here in Japan its bundled with the 12-32 and the 1.7 25mm lenses. Given it doesn't have IBIS, would that be a problem shooting with a prime that also lacks IS? Bearing in mind I am a beginner.. I'll mainly be using it for family stuff with the kids etc. Cheers
It can be ok with the prime lens without IBIS, just be careful to not use slow shutter speeds (below 1/30, 1/25 approx.).
Thanks a lot
hi, i will like to know if the soft skin can be used in video mode, like the sony a5100 for example. Please let me know! thanks in advance!
Is the soft skin effect work on “video mode” like the Sony a5100?
is there an overheat issue?
which one is better for vlogging? the lumix gx850 or Sony wx500?
Meanwhile this camera (and its mostly identically successor) became more affordable. For me, it is a perfect 3rd camera because of its size. It is so much better to have this camera with you with instead of having a more capable one at home... I paired it with the small 35-100 zoom, which I got cheap. Both lenses are not the very best of their kind, but do quite well. The 20mm pancake prime ifeels somewhat large on this body...
As a first camera for a beginner, it would recommend getting some other, maybe pre-owned model with viewfinder and IBIS.
Great video! What lense are you using for the video clip at 4:01 ?
I think it was the Pana Leica 25mm 1.4 (first version)
thanks for all your videos that are very helpful. Im traveling often and i need a light and compact camera for street photografy for both photos and videos that can take sharp pictures and video in 1080 60p which camera do you recommend Panasonic GX-800 or Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX80?
I would go with the GX80 since it also has 5-axis stabilisation.
Nice review. How is the battery life you guys find on this camera?
It can get you through a day of casual shooting, but as soon as you start to record 4K video or shooting in continuous mode, it will drop fast.
Is this camera good for Modelling photography?
Does the GF7 have the time lapse option where the camera builds the time lapse video within the camera?
Yes I think it does.
No mention of the 4K limits
Despite only having owned this camera for about a week, there are some other downsides to the camera that I've identified: like the mechanical shutter only having a maximum speed of 1/500th sec, and having a very slow 1/50th sec max flash sync speed. Too bad if you want to take any images where you want to freeze the action without rolling shutter issues.
the landscape is beautiful. where was this shot?
Mid-Wales
Anxious for you to have a full review of GH5 using 100-400mm for still photos NOT VIDEO ... too many.
I started to test the GH5 yesterday. Not sure how I am going to handle this but I might do a separate video review for stills and video, there is so much to talk about.
How it does in comparison to a GX85? What is the best for videos?
Sensor is the same but the biggest difference for video is that the GX850 stops after 5min. You can find more in our complete comparison here:

Mathieu Gasquet Thank you! So I think I'll pair a GX85 with my loved LX100.
You probably don't have this camera anymore, but are you able to shoot 4k video in anything other than 'p' mode? I'm looking for manual 4k, setting shutter, aperture, and iso.
I don't have it anymore but I checked the user manual and Manual mode is available in 4K.
@@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons I have the GF10 and there is no manual mode for videos.
I want to know, when you turn on flash and use selfie, does it have the 3 sec count down timing? if have can it be remove? and can 4k photo mode be used in flash? As I want to use it with flash + 4k photo mode. Thanks
I don't remember exactly but I think you can set the countdown as you like (as well as the number of shots). I don't think you can use flash with 4K Photo, because the camera records a video.
@@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons Thanks for the reply, But it only happened when I turned on flash there is a countdown of 3 sec without flash there is no countdown. I don't have the camera yet. As I only tried on the shop only. If you still have the camera can you test it out for me, if there is option that can turn off the countdown timer while having the flash on when taking a selfie. Thanks. If 4k photo mode is applicable on flash it will be great for me.
sorry but I don't have the camera anymore.
nice video. please review new lense from panasonic leica dg 8-16mm f2.8-4, because i'm so keen on having nice wide lense that made by leica. thank you
We'll start testing the new DG 8-18mm at the end of the week ;-)
This camera hasn't been doing very well in terms of sales. Within months it's now priced at £329 in the UK.
cool
I always liked the predecessors compact size especially with that lens, making it a good so called B camera. Also the Panasonic user interface. Having tried the Canon EOS M5 however I feel that Panasonic has been outdone in terms of it interface. I know Canon mirrorless is hardly class leading in specs, but I was otherwise wondering what ML thinks about Canons M5 & now M6.
We tried the M5 briefly at Photokina. AF seemed very fast but we weren't too impressed but the ergonomics: it felt like a compact camera on steroids. But I guess the advantage is that it is really compact and if you are ok with the limited selection of native lenses, it certainly can be a good photo companion.
^this or sony a5100?
The a5100 has faster AF and larger sensor (more dynamic range and better high iso performance) but lacks 4K video and many extra features you find in the GX850.
why don't you mention about 4k video up to 5min?
4K video is mentioned at 3:47
not up to 5min.
Ok, if you say so... :-D
Mathieu Gasquet I think Dimitri was talking about the 5 minute limit for 4K video?
Oh right my bad then, sorry for misunderstanding Dimitri. We honestly forgot to check that aspect also because we were confused by the official specs on the panasonic website that state 20min of continuous recording in 4K, not 5. But if you scroll down to the notes at the very bottom of the page, then they say that the recording stops after 5 minutes. They really don't like to make things clear, do they?! :-(
No IBIS, no hotshoe, no viewfinder... Really, Panasonic??? 😏
