Great advice on wool storage, moth prevention, etc. I store all my wools in clear plastic containers. Like you, I also use some over the door shoe storage. I found one with large sections; way more storage than the other style. I also use opaque stacking/locking plastic boxes designed for Christmas ornaments. These are especially handy if you’re taking projects to work on to another location. To keep my stash fresh I buy lavender soap, cut it into mini bars and distribute it among the wool. Since I felt onto vintage wool blankets I also distribute soap bars among them. Love your content!

Oh wow, what a great idea about the soap, I bet it smells amazing in the blankets and the Christmas ornaments box sounds perfect, thanks so much for the tips xx

I use the shoe storage for smaller amounts of wool, in their bags, two to each pocket. I also label the front of each pocket with the colors. My large lot of wool (my backup wool) I also keep in their bags, and they’re all put in a large plastic tote; I don’t have a lot of space to work with (I needle felt on my kitchen table😁), so this works well to store my wool!

I got a ready made moth repellant on amazon. It’s made with a mixture of essential oils which include cedar and lavender, but also has citronella. It smells lovely. You dilute a few drops in water in a spray bottle. I also created a colour palette. Small boxes in a larger box. Each box holds about 20g and I simply refill when I am out of that colour from the stock which is in zip lock bags and in daylight.
Love your content please keep it up 😊

Thanks for sharing!! Lovely idea to add the citronella especially for other bugs xx

This was really helpful! Thank you. Most of my wool is in shoe cubbies like on your door or plastic bins. Love the idea of popping some lavender or cedar balls in the containers.

Yes, cedar balls are great as you get quite a few for not much, the lavender smells stronger but it's useful to have both xx

Thank you Phillippa for the latest video. They were very good tips that will help to keep wool in good condition. And what I like best is that the advice was for simple measures for storage and care of the wool. Brilliant!

Thanks Philippa - having started felting these past few days, I can already sense a few purchases going to happen lol (to add to my already extensive yarn collection) so v useful to hear how you go about this. I have always had little bags of lavender in each drawer of yarn, and I also use a lavender atomiser when I am in my room to "boost" the protection offered. D

    Great video!
    Also an eye-opener.
I should have thought of it myself, but I never did - of course there is a chance water will build in the see-through plastic bags I keep my wool in. (one per colour)
I told my partner about the video this morning and he suggested adding rice to get rid of any moisture. Now I'll look for small, breathable bags to put the rice in. Only I'll need loads...
I do have the cedar wood balls, a friend got me a diffuser and I have some lavender essential oil for it. I also have bags with actual lavender it.
There is still the occasional moth in my room, so I keep all my wool closed.
I have plastic containers for projects I'm working on. And the ones that don't fit in those I tie into plastic bags when i stop working.

Rice is an excellent idea, I prefer that to those little bags, thanks so much xx

The Quilt Museum in Wales has a big collection of Antique Woven Blankets and they said they regularly freeze them , to manage with the moth problem.

While lavender might be a great deterrent, my nose is very reactive and negatively sensitive to it!
