That Japan pack with VR missions is not clear to me. How many VR mission? Are they in Japanese subtitles? Does that make all the content Japanese? Is VR even worth playing as we have no stupid glasses?
💯 this. So they're able to fit everything onto the physical on the Vita (MGS HD Collection) but can't do it on a Switch cart? Yeah they botched this hard and will be losing my sale for sure as a result
Metal Gear Solid 2 runs at 60 fps on PS2, I think there's no excuse for not running like that on Switch. Anyways, I still plan to get it on Switch because I'm a huge MGS fan since the old days and I want to play my favorite games on Switch. I always wanted to play MGS2 on a Nintendo platform since I was a kid and loved Twin Snakes on my GameCube. Amazing review!!
@@MalditoSeasEstadoDelsrael That may be the case. I think they capped the frame at 30 because of a few frame drops instead of try to fix it. Maybe if enough people asked they can update this on Switch.

$20 is a steal! I almost bought nes and mx versions and call it a day. I rather play the emulated version though with cheats added. So basically, emulation is the better way to go. $20-30 I'd pick it up. It's now $40 bucks on every console except for steam, which is weird. Maybe I buy it on ps5. I picked up the switch version today for $40.
Metal Gear Solid 1 was (or is) possibly my favorite game of all time. It's the one i would complete the most as a kid, i lost count of how many times i've played through it. I haven't been back for maybe... 20 years (christ) now. Really looking forward to that, lotta love for 2 and 3 also. Cheers for the review!
From what I saw this was never really hyped to be more than a straightforward rerelease and I already own these games multiple times over. I wish we'd hear more about delta.
I think for 20 dollars a game on the switch is a good deal.. not to mention the bonus items and 2 older games. So it's really 3 games for the price of 60 dollars so it's a good buy for me... plus I work like crazy
Definitely great games. Glad someone is getting to enjoy them for the first time. MGS2 & 3 are the highlights here imo, they really are great games. I'm just absolutely disappointed in the physical basically not having anything on it. I have the physical of the HD Collection on my old Vita and it's essentially the same thing but it actually has everything on the cart and has the exact same performance so I'm gonna pass on this one

Just a little note to anyone worrying about buying this or maybe you got this for someone as a present. The games play FINE. Been playing all 3 of them for multiple hours now and they are totally playable. You get used to the 30fps very fast. The controls are good too. They may not be the best version of these games but they are more than playable so dont worry about what everyone has been saying lol
i feel like people who review games for a living notice issues that normal people never would. I'm a lifelong fan of ocarina of time and apparently the version on NSO is really bad, literally did not notice anything until it was pointed out to me online.
If you can get use to Switch lower quality games instead of PS4/Xbox or Ps5 games then 30fps is fine. If you want it for portability, Play it on Steam Deck at 60fps. Not putting all the games on cartridge makes it an easy pass.
I believe MGS 2 ran at 60 on the ps2. 30 fps is still more that playable, but it makes no sense that they couldn’t have let it play at 60. The switch can handle that.
Oddly enough, the one I liked the most is actually the mg that was also a "card game" for the psp. It got a lot of bad press but I enjoyed the tactical approach, and the goofy hijacked plane story. Just looked it up, metal gear ac!d
I don't remember those titles at all? Weird, I was a huge Vita & PSP fan (still have my old psp & 2 Vitas, one still brand-new in the box). The only ones I remembered were Peacewalker and the Portable Ops games and I have those and really enjoyed them both. Funny how I never heard of those ones
I recently purchased a Retroid Pocket 3 plus so I’m gonna search for this game cause I’m intrigued… Also my favorite Metal Gear “game” was that clunky game for the iPhone 4 back in the day based in Metal Gear Solid 4, I was in high school and always out doing extracurricular things so I never was at home until night, I played the shit of that app in between clases, commute and breaks
@Xxlibra1018xX they were card based, you would get cards for collecting gear and could use them for walking running healing shooting etc. I believe there was some sort of ap system too.
I really, really wanted this collection to be exceptional. I grabbed Snake Eatsr for the 3DS when my PS2 conked out, and I loved being able to play it on the go. So Switch was really the only place I wanted to grab this when it released. Apparently that version of Snake Eater only ran at 20fps? As it is, I think I'll wait for a sale. Thanks for the video!
But it's not very "physical" though. This type of release should not be supported by consumers, vote with your wallet so they know this is not acceptable. Game cards go up to 64GB there is no excuse for so much of the release being missing from the game card.
Your “physical” copy is just the box and a cart with nothing on it. By buying this version, all you’re doing is inconveniencing yourself as you will need to put the cart in (with nothing on it) to play a digital game 🫠

Well done for a fair review. It's a shame more effort wasn't made, but for all the people who missed them the first time, they have a chance to play some classic games.
Why 30fps? Odd things happened during some cutscene and when you're opening the lockers (MGS2), the framerate jump to 60, even in MGS3, if you paused the game, pause the console in sleep mode, open the software again, the framerate from 30 goes up to 60....Waiting for a huge price drop
30fps isn't to bad i'm on a switch lite so i was mostly concerned on frame rate but that seems kinda irritating to hit 60fps for cutscenes and certain sections
Can’t believe they didn’t put a single MGS game on the cartridge and used only 3gb on the cartridge capacity and force downloads on everything. Such a lazy physical release!!!! What is actually physical then?
At the moment as a huge MGS fan this is too expensive and it can wait. That being said though if Vol 2 is literally just MGS4, Peace Walker and MGS GZ/V all ported in a similar way that will be more than worth £50. MGSV ran really well on the PS3, so hopefully they just stick that on the Switch rather than trying to port the PS4 version
So glad these games are on Switch. I remember as a kid i loves Metal Gear Solid but i never finished it cause i only had the one disc so im overjoyed im finally able too finish it after all these years.

Who knows what patches will be coming out for this release on Switch. All the ports I've wanted to see on Switch came true. I've been waiting too long for MGS on Switch and I'm happy with what they've been able to accomplish. Edit: I'll of course still be waiting for a good sale price though.
Im playing through 1 & 2 now, and i chose the Switch version over PS5 because i wanted to play them while at work 🤫, and it hasnt disappointed. Being that i only play in hand-held mode, I dont really notice the FPS. It plays pretty good imo. Bit pricey is my only criticism
2:01 Night Dive Studios, the developers of the Quake remaster, had the source code in order to improve the visuals of the games but like most Japanese developers, Konami never kept the source code for most of the Metal Gear games, which is why we ended up receiving these sort of basic ports with minor upscaling. Not bad but not amazing. Also, not fair to compare the Quake remasters to the MGS collection since those games are mindless shooters with no story and basic brown level designs.
Even if Konami didn't, chances are good Microsoft, who published MGS1 on PC and actually improved the game with features such as graphics upscaling, did. Isn't that why the game could be re-released on GOG a couple of years back?
So frustrating because I have the Vita digital collection but my PSV died with no warning a couple months ago.. Soo not sure whether i should just get this on Switch or just shop for new hardware
@@Mintcar923 It was a pretty good version, though it was in sub-native res (native res for the hud) and had some slowdown sitting MGS3 cutscenes, particularly bad during splitscreen. I really enjoyed it. In your place I'd wait a bit to see if there's no miracle and Konami doesn't patch it to 60 fps. Dunno how easy it is to find a gen 1 Vita with a pristine screen.
MGS is my most favourite franchise ever and been playing since late 90s when I were 6 year old. Clearly this game wasn’t optimised properly for the switch which is a big shame because when I were released I was hyped to play the games again. I reckon I’ll give in and buy them at some point 😂
The biggest issue I have with this is that they decided to put the little games on the cartridge when in fact it should've been the MGS games. They really shafted us with that decision. For that reason, I'm holding off. Luckily, I have a series X to decide if I want to eventually get it there but Konami absolutely does not deserve full price for this. They totally half assed this. Truly despicable.
Even though it's just the basic games, I still bought it so I can play MGS1 again, haven't played it since 98-99, and I forgot how fun it was. I only paid 30$ bucks for the physical copy, so I'm ok with it.
Only real issue I have really is the Switch framerate for 2 and 3 being capped at 30 - based on your analysis they just capped it because it couldn't do 60 all the time - the segmentation of everything, and the big download. It seems like there may be some leeway to squeeze out 60fps in a few updates. Idon't really want any big enhancements, the faithful conversions of the original Kojima versions is great (and they've fixed a few flaws of the previous HD collection), and they're doing full remakes starting with Snake Eater anyway. Not enough publishers let you play both original and remade/remastered versions of their games imo. Love those remakes of Resident Evil 1, 2 and 3, but why can't we play the original chunky PS1 games too, like with RE4? Options for both are great, is my point basically. MGS1 doesn't really need to be upscaled to 1080p to fix the blurry visuals, the problem is the filtering. There's ways to get 240p to look sharp, and I believe they're patching in better scaling.
Original switch was released in 2017, OLED Switch released in 2021 and mostly just had a better screen/stand, PS Vita released in 2011. It's definitely time for Sony or Nintendo to drop a more powerful handheld. I'm *BEGGING* for them to take my money.

I'm don't know why I'm surprised - Konami has been fighting EA and Activision/Blizzard for a title of the worst and most hated publisher for quite some time now! I understand everyone’s gripes… however, I feel like no one is talking about the exclusion of the substance and subsistence versions of the games… I understand the whole licensing bullshit that every game is suffering from and that game preservation is a joke when lawyers are involved, but man I really wished that was still in the games… however, I am still excited to have these games, the price is a little much but you know these games have not been available to me for a while, and now they could be on my switch, idk I think I’m happy enough with that
I’m genuinely surprised that people are shocked that this collection is just a regular port and nothing more. I just look at it as a collection where people who don’t have the game or never played can now play it on recent consoles. I never had any high hopes and wasn’t shocked at all by it. That’s why we need to have our expectations low.
I'm very excited to play these games on Switch but the price tag is too high for what they are offering. I will get it if it goes on sale for a reasonable price
Thanks for the honest review. I really wanted an insight on the 'tweaked' controls which as you mentioned has been subtly hidden. 😅 Pressure Sensitive Buttons sure makes the game hard to port to other systems. 🙂
I honestly do not have any copies of these games anymore, so this is a relief to me that I can get it on the switch. This system has been a life saver to gain my collections back that I had as a kid.
Did you watch the video it's missing most the games? Might as well buy the digital but these games do not preform as intended on newer hardware. Best just to emulate or buying the originals .
The storage and cartridge size are deal breakers for me. I buy physical to save room on my memory card for games that are small enough and download only. As for content, it's a hell of a better deal than we got in the 2000s when Konami released the "Essential Collection" which contained MGS1, MGS2 Substance, and only Disc 1 of MGS3 Subsistence. They left out disc 2 and essentially the first two Metal Gear games on MSX.
I see many comments saying its dealbreaker for not sold in physical form. I agree because for many of us purchasing an classic remake/remaster is for nostalgia purposes.
30 FPS for MGS2 ins a deal breaker when the PS2 I still have hooked up runs it at 60 as it was designed. I just can't bring myself to pay money for half the performance of a 22 year old game. Since they sell the games separately, I may wait for a deep sale of MGS1 just to have it on Switch even though I own it a couple times already. I'm a big fan if you can't tell from my profile pic lol.
I remember buying and loving Zone of the enders for ps2. It also came with a demo disc for the opening level of mg2. I played the demo almost as much as the game, the graphics blew me away at the time.
MGS 3 not being playable in 60fps is pretty criminal. It's a PS2 game for gods sake, it was 30FPS on the fricken Vita! Absolutely unnaceptable on Konami's part.
It's awesome, runs perfect, only thing off about it is the sensitivity detection for the trigger buttons for example like in son's of liberty for leaning in 1st person mode, mgs solid works awesome on handheld as does sons of liberty, i just wish they included the substance version with the skateboard missions, The master book for each game is really awesome too and the animated Comic book for the first 3 games that has live voice acting is really awesome, I highly recommend it if you like metal gear, probably the most affordable way to own the Solid, sons of liberty and sneak eater, plus you get all the knowledge from the master books showing things like all the ghost photo locations, dog tags etc, super work 60$
I forgot the skateboard missions haha. Look, I’m having a blast with the games regardless of visuals etc (they’re amazing games). People like to know the nitty gritty but you are right, they’re still worth it. Mark

Been waiting for a Switch based review of this collection to help me decide if I should purchase the game. As a huge fan of MGS on PS1 all those years ago, I'm definitely going to be getting this game for switch, but this review has helped me to decide that I should probably wait a bit for it to drop in price. I've waited this long for a version on switch, I'm sure I can hold out until after the new year. With the physical copy being heavily download based, would this affect pre-owned copies? I.e, would the game file downloads be locked to the profile of the original purchaser?
My first experience with this series was MGS 2 when it first came out. I fell in love with the gameplay instantly but can’t justify the $90 price tag here in Australia.

Exactly. Konami has been a shell of itself for a long time now. Everything they do is just for a quick cash grab now. I hope people aren't hoping for the best with the MGS 3 Remake. They will manage to screw that up too
kind of late to this review, but despite the physical releases shortcomings, would you still recommend this as a good entry point into the franchise for someone who's never played the games before now that the price has dropped?
It’s definitely the latter for me, Konami were lazy with the Switch port of the MGS collection, a hard pass from me. What a disappointment after the amazing and awesome Cawabunga collection.
@SwitchUpYt having finished watching the video I think this will sadly be a pass for me! I'm not interested in the graphic novels etc and consider it to be filler, though I know alot of people will like them!
As someone who only buys physical releases, this game card release is absolutely pointless to the point I wouldn't even give them £5 for it. It might as well be a code in a box so much of the data is not included. Resist digital distribution!
I can’t for the life of me understand why they don’t remake the GameCube version of 1 with the better graphics. I understand why the original is there but they should add the GC version somewhere
Nintendo owns some of the IP and thus contents of the game. For any chance for the game to to be remastered and ported, Konami and Nintendo need to work to together and come into some form of agreement for development and publishing in order to go forward. Another major constraint is that the developer who did MGS: TTS have long gone under and ceased to exist thus Konami more than likely need to find a highly competent developer to do the port and remaster considering this is a GameCube only title and have never been ported outside of the GameCube. Developing for the GameCube system it's self wasn't easy and even less so when it comes to porting from it. Overall it would no doubt be a very costly and time consuming port which would certainly put off someone like Konami.
And you'd have thought that this Switch compilation would've come with Twin Snakes? Seems like a massive no brainer to me? Personally just a "GameCube Online" via the Play Store would be a huge win for me. Also a Dreamcast and a Playstation 4 version of GTA-5 🙂
Konami releasing old ports with no improvements, charging us above full price, shows how lazy they are, what they think of us. Yet people will buy this joke. Good job consumers, go and get them and have fun, you deserve it...
my suspicion about it jumping to 60 is remembering what people have said about the switch actually overclocking its cpu when loading a game, so the jumping up to 60 might be the effect of the cpu going really high clocks when loading, and going back to normal when its finished loading assets etc, most switch games do this, but maybe for this case when it loads, its uncapped but for other games its capped, i dunno just speculating
And doom 64, and shadow man, turok games, let's get legacy of Kain games remastered. Tomb raider remastered trilogy looks lovely, we need Dino crisis remaster also. Hexen, star wars dark forces looks good, give that a go.
Stuck in between, I want it to play on my lunch breaks HOWEVER pc is cheaper but I don’t want to have to take my laptop everywhere, I think I’m going with switch instead only because it’s handheld.
It is mindboggling how lazy the Switch Port is. When even 60 fps in MGS2 on the PS2 was possible and 60 on the HD Collection (MGS3) then it should be absolutely targeted on the Switch.
It's good to know they haven't actuality removed any content from the games. It's a bummer, but I can deal with the lack of QOL improvements. If you've never played these games, MGS3 is one of the greatest games of that era. You won't be disappointed.

In the 3ds version of snake eater, you can walk while crouching. Is that in this collection? Also, early access reviews showed that mgs 1 had muted dialogue for control explanations. Is that still the case?
I would have bought a PS5 copy, a Switch physical and a Switch digital copy, but since Konami blew again, I'm passing on the whole thing until it's super cheap.

Excellent review, but am a little confused that I'm seeing major stuttering in MGS1's cutscenes, and long load times after cutscenes on MGS2 that definitely didn't exist before, but haven't heard anyone else bring these up?
Not my bag and maybe that’s why I am confused at the physical release - considering how much is DL. Is this not defeating the object or are the games on the cart worth the purchase? (Genuine question to those who collect/into MGS)
The Metal gear games were some of my favourite games of all time in fact the Metal Gear solid Premium Package was my first collectors edition I bought on my own back in the day...... and I was so excited to play them again on my Switch and as a collector have the physical. It's actually quite upsetting( yea... I know DRAMA queen) but these games meant so much to me and helped me escape through some hard times, that these game haven't been given the love and attention that they deserved. And like you said Quake is an amazing example, a BEAUTIFUL and faithful port with love. This just seems so stingy from Konami and baffling that they halved the Frame rate.... I will probably cave and buy them digitally but I wont be happy about it...well.... Pfft......!!! Great review as always lads!
It could've been up there with Borderlands 3 as one of the best Switch releases this month, but it's such a shame how little love they've given the collection. I appreciate your comparison with the Quake releases on Switch as well - they are the perfect example of how to do it right.

To me, I haven't played MGS 1 and 2. Only 3 but on my emulator on PC but it's slow thanks to my low-spec PC. So I have no choice but I will going to buy the Switch Version since I have to go to work and the only time I could play is on Lunch break. I don't mind 30FPS as long as it is not buggy and glitchy to say the least. (ehem GTA Trilogy ehem) Thanks for the review, SwitchUp! Also, now that Vol. 1 is underwhelming, at least, according to some, Vol. 2 is going to be interesting as MGS4 and MGSV will be there, with MGSV is running at 60FPS at PS4, which is at the same generation as the Switch at that time.
I'm fine with MGS still having the PS1 visuals - a similar port of the Silent Hill series would be amazing imo. Also, these games are available to buy individually on the eShop - when I found out Dark Forces was delayed until Feb 04, I grabbed MGS1 for £16...

That Japan pack with VR missions is not clear to me. How many VR mission? Are they in Japanese subtitles? Does that make all the content Japanese? Is VR even worth playing as we have no stupid glasses?
Konami put more effort in their MGS Pachinko machines in Japan than on this collection. Disappointing from a physical preservation point of view.
The fact that this wasn't all on the cartridge was a deal breaker for me. As is it is a hard pass.

Metal Gear Solid 2 runs at 60 fps on PS2, I think there's no excuse for not running like that on Switch. Anyways, I still plan to get it on Switch because I'm a huge MGS fan since the old days and I want to play my favorite games on Switch. I always wanted to play MGS2 on a Nintendo platform since I was a kid and loved Twin Snakes on my GameCube. Amazing review!!

The vita version runs 30fps gameplay and 60fps cinematics, and has the same tactile menus so I assume it's just a straight port from that version

$20 is a steal! I almost bought nes and mx versions and call it a day. I rather play the emulated version though with cheats added. So basically, emulation is the better way to go. $20-30 I'd pick it up.
It's now $40 bucks on every console except for steam, which is weird. Maybe I buy it on ps5. I picked up the switch version today for $40.
Metal Gear Solid 1 was (or is) possibly my favorite game of all time. It's the one i would complete the most as a kid, i lost count of how many times i've played through it. I haven't been back for maybe... 20 years (christ) now. Really looking forward to that, lotta love for 2 and 3 also. Cheers for the review!

I think for 20 dollars a game on the switch is a good deal.. not to mention the bonus items and 2 older games. So it's really 3 games for the price of 60 dollars so it's a good buy for me... plus I work like crazy

Definitely great games. Glad someone is getting to enjoy them for the first time. MGS2 & 3 are the highlights here imo, they really are great games. I'm just absolutely disappointed in the physical basically not having anything on it. I have the physical of the HD Collection on my old Vita and it's essentially the same thing but it actually has everything on the cart and has the exact same performance so I'm gonna pass on this one

Just a little note to anyone worrying about buying this or maybe you got this for someone as a present. The games play FINE. Been playing all 3 of them for multiple hours now and they are totally playable. You get used to the 30fps very fast. The controls are good too. They may not be the best version of these games but they are more than playable so dont worry about what everyone has been saying lol

If you can get use to Switch lower quality games instead of PS4/Xbox or Ps5 games then 30fps is fine. If you want it for portability, Play it on Steam Deck at 60fps. Not putting all the games on cartridge makes it an easy pass.

30 fps is still more that playable, but it makes no sense that they couldn’t have let it play at 60. The switch can handle that.
Oddly enough, the one I liked the most is actually the mg that was also a "card game" for the psp. It got a lot of bad press but I enjoyed the tactical approach, and the goofy hijacked plane story.

I don't remember those titles at all? Weird, I was a huge Vita & PSP fan (still have my old psp & 2 Vitas, one still brand-new in the box). The only ones I remembered were Peacewalker and the Portable Ops games and I have those and really enjoyed them both. Funny how I never heard of those ones
I recently purchased a Retroid Pocket 3 plus so I’m gonna search for this game cause I’m intrigued… Also my favorite Metal Gear “game” was that clunky game for the iPhone 4 back in the day based in Metal Gear Solid 4, I was in high school and always out doing extracurricular things so I never was at home until night, I played the shit of that app in between clases, commute and breaks

I really, really wanted this collection to be exceptional. I grabbed Snake Eatsr for the 3DS when my PS2 conked out, and I loved being able to play it on the go. So Switch was really the only place I wanted to grab this when it released. Apparently that version of Snake Eater only ran at 20fps? As it is, I think I'll wait for a sale. Thanks for the video!

I love this series so much I am buying the physical copy. However it is crazy to me how popular MGS is and how little Konami cares about it.
But it's not very "physical" though. This type of release should not be supported by consumers, vote with your wallet so they know this is not acceptable. Game cards go up to 64GB there is no excuse for so much of the release being missing from the game card.
Your “physical” copy is just the box and a cart with nothing on it. By buying this version, all you’re doing is inconveniencing yourself as you will need to put the cart in (with nothing on it) to play a digital game 🫠

Lack of 60 fps is just insulting at this point. I know the Switch hardware is exceptionally aged at this point but cmon. These games are decades old
Why 30fps? Odd things happened during some cutscene and when you're opening the lockers (MGS2), the framerate jump to 60, even in MGS3, if you paused the game, pause the console in sleep mode, open the software again, the framerate from 30 goes up to 60....Waiting for a huge price drop
30fps isn't to bad i'm on a switch lite so i was mostly concerned on frame rate but that seems kinda irritating to hit 60fps for cutscenes and certain sections
Can’t believe they didn’t put a single MGS game on the cartridge and used only 3gb on the cartridge capacity and force downloads on everything. Such a lazy physical release!!!! What is actually physical then?
At the moment as a huge MGS fan this is too expensive and it can wait. That being said though if Vol 2 is literally just MGS4, Peace Walker and MGS GZ/V all ported in a similar way that will be more than worth £50.
MGSV ran really well on the PS3, so hopefully they just stick that on the Switch rather than trying to port the PS4 version

Who knows what patches will be coming out for this release on Switch. All the ports I've wanted to see on Switch came true. I've been waiting too long for MGS on Switch and I'm happy with what they've been able to accomplish.
Edit: I'll of course still be waiting for a good sale price though.
Im playing through 1 & 2 now, and i chose the Switch version over PS5 because i wanted to play them while at work 🤫, and it hasnt disappointed. Being that i only play in hand-held mode, I dont really notice the FPS. It plays pretty good imo. Bit pricey is my only criticism

2:01 Night Dive Studios, the developers of the Quake remaster, had the source code in order to improve the visuals of the games but like most Japanese developers, Konami never kept the source code for most of the Metal Gear games, which is why we ended up receiving these sort of basic ports with minor upscaling. Not bad but not amazing.
Also, not fair to compare the Quake remasters to the MGS collection since those games are mindless shooters with no story and basic brown level designs.
Even if Konami didn't, chances are good Microsoft, who published MGS1 on PC and actually improved the game with features such as graphics upscaling, did. Isn't that why the game could be re-released on GOG a couple of years back?
Fun fact - the Vita version of MGS2 was 60 fps in interiors and 30 fps for exterior areas.
So frustrating because I have the Vita digital collection but my PSV died with no warning a couple months ago.. Soo not sure whether i should just get this on Switch or just shop for new hardware
@@Mintcar923 It was a pretty good version, though it was in sub-native res (native res for the hud) and had some slowdown sitting MGS3 cutscenes, particularly bad during splitscreen. I really enjoyed it.
In your place I'd wait a bit to see if there's no miracle and Konami doesn't patch it to 60 fps. Dunno how easy it is to find a gen 1 Vita with a pristine screen.
MGS is my most favourite franchise ever and been playing since late 90s when I were 6 year old.
Clearly this game wasn’t optimised properly for the switch which is a big shame because when I were released I was hyped to play the games again.

The biggest issue I have with this is that they decided to put the little games on the cartridge when in fact it should've been the MGS games. They really shafted us with that decision. For that reason, I'm holding off. Luckily, I have a series X to decide if I want to eventually get it there but Konami absolutely does not deserve full price for this. They totally half assed this. Truly despicable.

Even though it's just the basic games, I still bought it so I can play MGS1 again, haven't played it since 98-99, and I forgot how fun it was. I only paid 30$ bucks for the physical copy, so I'm ok with it.
Only real issue I have really is the Switch framerate for 2 and 3 being capped at 30 - based on your analysis they just capped it because it couldn't do 60 all the time - the segmentation of everything, and the big download. It seems like there may be some leeway to squeeze out 60fps in a few updates.
Idon't really want any big enhancements, the faithful conversions of the original Kojima versions is great (and they've fixed a few flaws of the previous HD collection), and they're doing full remakes starting with Snake Eater anyway. Not enough publishers let you play both original and remade/remastered versions of their games imo. Love those remakes of Resident Evil 1, 2 and 3, but why can't we play the original chunky PS1 games too, like with RE4? Options for both are great, is my point basically.
MGS1 doesn't really need to be upscaled to 1080p to fix the blurry visuals, the problem is the filtering. There's ways to get 240p to look sharp, and I believe they're patching in better scaling.
Original switch was released in 2017, OLED Switch released in 2021 and mostly just had a better screen/stand, PS Vita released in 2011. It's definitely time for Sony or Nintendo to drop a more powerful handheld. I'm *BEGGING* for them to take my money.

I understand everyone’s gripes… however, I feel like no one is talking about the exclusion of the substance and subsistence versions of the games… I understand the whole licensing bullshit that every game is suffering from and that game preservation is a joke when lawyers are involved, but man I really wished that was still in the games… however, I am still excited to have these games, the price is a little much but you know these games have not been available to me for a while, and now they could be on my switch, idk I think I’m happy enough with that

I’m genuinely surprised that people are shocked that this collection is just a regular port and nothing more. I just look at it as a collection where people who don’t have the game or never played can now play it on recent consoles. I never had any high hopes and wasn’t shocked at all by it. That’s why we need to have our expectations low.

I honestly do not have any copies of these games anymore, so this is a relief to me that I can get it on the switch. This system has been a life saver to gain my collections back that I had as a kid.
Might as well buy the digital release unless you like to collect empty boxes, because that is pretty much what you are getting.
Did you watch the video it's missing most the games? Might as well buy the digital but these games do not preform as intended on newer hardware. Best just to emulate or buying the originals .
The storage and cartridge size are deal breakers for me. I buy physical to save room on my memory card for games that are small enough and download only. As for content, it's a hell of a better deal than we got in the 2000s when Konami released the "Essential Collection" which contained MGS1, MGS2 Substance, and only Disc 1 of MGS3 Subsistence. They left out disc 2 and essentially the first two Metal Gear games on MSX.

Honestly, the only Metal Gear game I want on the Switch is MGS: The Twin Snakes. But I highly doubt that'll happen.
I remember buying and loving Zone of the enders for ps2. It also came with a demo disc for the opening level of mg2. I played the demo almost as much as the game, the graphics blew me away at the time.
I rented it from the video shop just to play the demo.

MGS 3 not being playable in 60fps is pretty criminal. It's a PS2 game for gods sake, it was 30FPS on the fricken Vita! Absolutely unnaceptable on Konami's part.
It's awesome, runs perfect, only thing off about it is the sensitivity detection for the trigger buttons for example like in son's of liberty for leaning in 1st person mode, mgs solid works awesome on handheld as does sons of liberty, i just wish they included the substance version with the skateboard missions, The master book for each game is really awesome too and the animated Comic book for the first 3 games that has live voice acting is really awesome, I highly recommend it if you like metal gear, probably the most affordable way to own the Solid, sons of liberty and sneak eater, plus you get all the knowledge from the master books showing things like all the ghost photo locations, dog tags etc, super work 60$

Been waiting for a Switch based review of this collection to help me decide if I should purchase the game. As a huge fan of MGS on PS1 all those years ago, I'm definitely going to be getting this game for switch, but this review has helped me to decide that I should probably wait a bit for it to drop in price. I've waited this long for a version on switch, I'm sure I can hold out until after the new year.

My first experience with this series was MGS 2 when it first came out. I fell in love with the gameplay instantly but can’t justify the $90 price tag here in Australia.

Exactly. Konami has been a shell of itself for a long time now. Everything they do is just for a quick cash grab now. I hope people aren't hoping for the best with the MGS 3 Remake. They will manage to screw that up too
I paid $19.99 on prime day 2024. The cart issue doesn’t bother me because you still at least get a cart. Some games don’t even include one.
kind of late to this review, but despite the physical releases shortcomings, would you still recommend this as a good entry point into the franchise for someone who's never played the games before now that the price has dropped?
I hope to see this collection in a patched up video some day.

It’s definitely the latter for me, Konami were lazy with the Switch port of the MGS collection, a hard pass from me. What a disappointment after the amazing and awesome Cawabunga collection.
I remember playing these back on their original consoles l, just started watching the vid and have my fingers crossed for it to be a positive review!

I'm not interested in the graphic novels etc and consider it to be filler, though I know alot of people will like them!
Bare minimum aside, fans who know MGS 2 Substance and MGS 3 Subsistence those add one will be forgotten to time at this rate.
As someone who only buys physical releases, this game card release is absolutely pointless to the point I wouldn't even give them £5 for it. It might as well be a code in a box so much of the data is not included. Resist digital distribution!
The ps3 version mostly runs at 60fps, anything less than 60fps on the switch is unacceptable
Bought only snake eater. I'm hoping the foliage sound glitches get patched. Experienced them as soon as gameplay started.
I can’t for the life of me understand why they don’t remake the GameCube version of 1 with the better graphics. I understand why the original is there but they should add the GC version somewhere
Nintendo owns some of the IP and thus contents of the game. For any chance for the game to to be remastered and ported, Konami and Nintendo need to work to together and come into some form of agreement for development and publishing in order to go forward. Another major constraint is that the developer who did MGS: TTS have long gone under and ceased to exist thus Konami more than likely need to find a highly competent developer to do the port and remaster considering this is a GameCube only title and have never been ported outside of the GameCube. Developing for the GameCube system it's self wasn't easy and even less so when it comes to porting from it. Overall it would no doubt be a very costly and time consuming port which would certainly put off someone like Konami.
And you'd have thought that this Switch compilation would've come with Twin Snakes?

Personally just a "GameCube Online" via the Play Store would be a huge win for me. Also a Dreamcast and a Playstation 4 version of GTA-5 🙂
Konami releasing old ports with no improvements, charging us above full price, shows how lazy they are, what they think of us. Yet people will buy this joke. Good job consumers, go and get them and have fun, you deserve it...

I remember buying MGS on my PSP as a PS Classic for $6 in 2007.
my suspicion about it jumping to 60 is remembering what people have said about the switch actually overclocking its cpu when loading a game, so the jumping up to 60 might be the effect of the cpu going really high clocks when loading, and going back to normal when its finished loading assets etc, most switch games do this, but maybe for this case when it loads, its uncapped but for other games its capped, i dunno just speculating

And doom 64, and shadow man, turok games, let's get legacy of Kain games remastered. Tomb raider remastered trilogy looks lovely, we need Dino crisis remaster also. Hexen, star wars dark forces looks good, give that a go.
Stuck in between, I want it to play on my lunch breaks HOWEVER pc is cheaper but I don’t want to have to take my laptop everywhere, I think I’m going with switch instead only because it’s handheld.
It is mindboggling how lazy the Switch Port is. When even 60 fps in MGS2 on the PS2 was possible and 60 on the HD Collection (MGS3) then it should be absolutely targeted on the Switch.
It's good to know they haven't actuality removed any content from the games. It's a bummer, but I can deal with the lack of QOL improvements. If you've never played these games, MGS3 is one of the greatest games of that era. You won't be disappointed.

In the 3ds version of snake eater, you can walk while crouching. Is that in this collection? Also, early access reviews showed that mgs 1 had muted dialogue for control explanations. Is that still the case?
No, it was never in the remaster, only MGS3D.

I would have bought a PS5 copy, a Switch physical and a Switch digital copy, but since Konami blew again, I'm passing on the whole thing until it's super cheap.

Excellent review, but am a little confused that I'm seeing major stuttering in MGS1's cutscenes, and long load times after cutscenes on MGS2 that definitely didn't exist before, but haven't heard anyone else bring these up?
i noticed that mgs3 stutters when an enemy spots you or enters caution, this didnt happen on the psvita version
Not my bag and maybe that’s why I am confused at the physical release - considering how much is DL. Is this not defeating the object or are the games on the cart worth the purchase? (Genuine question to those who collect/into MGS)

The Metal gear games were some of my favourite games of all time in fact the Metal Gear solid Premium Package was my first collectors edition I bought on my own back in the day...... and I was so excited to play them again on my Switch and as a collector have the physical.
It's actually quite upsetting( yea... I know DRAMA queen) but these games meant so much to me and helped me escape through some hard times, that these game haven't been given the love and attention that they deserved. And like you said Quake is an amazing example, a BEAUTIFUL and faithful port with love. This just seems so stingy from Konami and baffling that they halved the Frame rate....
I will probably cave and buy them digitally but I wont be happy about it...well.... Pfft......!!!

It could've been up there with Borderlands 3 as one of the best Switch releases this month, but it's such a shame how little love they've given the collection. I appreciate your comparison with the Quake releases on Switch as well - they are the perfect example of how to do it right.

To me, I haven't played MGS 1 and 2. Only 3 but on my emulator on PC but it's slow thanks to my low-spec PC. So I have no choice but I will going to buy the Switch Version since I have to go to work and the only time I could play is on Lunch break. I don't mind 30FPS as long as it is not buggy and glitchy to say the least. (ehem GTA Trilogy ehem) Thanks for the review, SwitchUp!
Also, now that Vol. 1 is underwhelming, at least, according to some, Vol. 2 is going to be interesting as MGS4 and MGSV will be there, with MGSV is running at 60FPS at PS4, which is at the same generation as the Switch at that time.
I'm fine with MGS still having the PS1 visuals - a similar port of the Silent Hill series would be amazing imo.
Also, these games are available to buy individually on the eShop - when I found out Dark Forces was delayed until Feb 04, I grabbed MGS1 for £16...
