Good test. Thanks for the info. But, putting my 3rd party router in AP and relying on my ISP gateway for NAT and WAN firewall doesn't work for me security wise. Generally ISP gateways are just so-so in that regard, where-as 3rd party routers are much better.

Turning off IPv6 address allocation on the LAN interface of the RG seems to disable the ability to get a delegated prefix. Their RG always eats prefixes 0-7, and starts returning prefixes beginning with 8-f.

So i have fixed wireless and using a Netgear orbi. As a huge gamer, my console keeps popping up with double NAT. I read that putting the orbi in AP mode fixes it, but it only worked once and has reverted back to double nat even though my router still shows AP mode. So I have my PC hardwired to my router (R7000P) and 2-in-1 modem in bridge mode, and it will drop my connection every 2 hours on the dot for about 3-5 seconds. It disconnects me from my competitive games and it frustrates me that I cannot figure it out. I have tried putting it in DMZ mode, using a static IP, checked release timings (they are set at 24 or 48 hours), and lastly I’ve tried Dynamic QoS. Nothing has worked and I can’t figure it out. I’m to the end of my rope, I’ve tried just a general tracert and it seemed fine but I haven’t tried tracert the way you just did it. Do you think o configured my R7000P wrong?
You can bypass the entire modem itself and run straight from ONT to personal Router. Don’t want to disclose it on here but look into buying a switch and searching google. Once you do the “swap” you can unplug the AT&T modem all together.
Clone the MAC address of the ISP RG with your router. Ont>switch & ISP RG>Switch & Store bought router>switch...Once you get ipv4 on router you can unplug RG from ISP on switch.

Interesting video, but have a couple of problems with it .... 1) When I try to use my third-party router (A Linksys WRT-1900ac) in "DMZplus" mode of my Pace 5268ac gateway. No matter what I try, the trace route command for IPv4 still shows a double-NAT going first from the router's LAN IP to the gateway's, then finally to the public IP address. 2) While changing the 3rd-party router to "AP mode" as you say (i.e., place it in "Bridge Mode") gets rid of the double-NAT of course. The trace route command for IPv6 doesn't work in either situation. As the response command prompt message always says "Unable to resolve target system name" followed by whatever URL I attempt to use for it. So what am I doing wrong here?
2 separate routers and a LAN cable are needed for a bridge mode. Modem does not count as a router. Only your second router will be used in separate location to extend wifi signal. It will not strengthen signal in bridge mode and it is not for your first router.

You have to set bridge on client (wan) to the gateway of your host the subnet itself usually ending in .0 Ie wan = 10.10.0.0/21 Dhcp=10.10.0.2,10.10.7.254 Broadcast=10.10.7.255 Set lan STATIC 10.10.0.1 Watch the skip :) I dont use v6 (yet) so idk there Edit I should erase this comment... i keep forgetting my ip static :/
What it does it will disable internet connectivity along with a WiFi NAT will be get disable..too.... Only it will acts as a Pure modem to translate signals ..... So Whenever settings up a router behind it...you won't face Double NAT issue

well...in my setup , I tried the -4 it was ok ( with one exception, see below), but failed with -6 ...so I am here to get help. The reason I am using bridge mode is the fact the 3rd party router that I use has NO vdsl input(modem). so the ISP modem/router has x.x.x.254, and the 3rd party router x.x.x.1 And of course the ISP modem/router is in bridge mode !!! The exception to your video, I am supposed to get the ip of the router/modem ...254 , but I did not !!!!
Hi John, I've been watching all your videos and they are extremely helpful! however, my ISP doesn't allow me advanced access to the router, it's very limited and I can't do anything on it. I've tried all the default settings to access the advanced mode on it with no success. Is there a way I can break into it and have full access to all modem's functionality?
@@mass627 the carrier gear firmware is designed to be managed remotely not through a local IP. Carrier gateways are specially stripped down to basics to prevent support calls. I did some speed testing and ended up configuring "double NATing" with a couple "Port Forwards" I need opened. Testing showed my LAN Router runs faster behind the gateway than if exposed to all the Internet junk broadcast and port scanning. I leave that job to the carrier gateway. With carrier gateway in "bridge mode" my Router becomes pounded from Internet and that slows down my 700Mb/s speedtest... double NATing also keeps the cartier out of your VPN traffic and intranet data. The problem exposed in the video has everything to do with bad IPV6 setup. I would try all the different IPv6 connection types in Netgear's router until you get what you want.

Hey, when switching to AP mode you said that I should turn the wireless for my isp gateway/router off. But can't I just use this to extend the range for my wifi given that the wifi credentials are same for both the routers?
Hey John. Why not replace your gateway with a Arris NVG599? It’s a older model than the Pace but it has IP passthrough. I just did the trace test and both, IPv4 and IPv6, were successful. I used to have the Pace gateway and recently had it replaced due to the bugs. I’m also using the XR500. Thanks for all the good info!
I used to use an old router to share internet from a usb wwan dongle using network bridge. I would connect an Ethernet cable from it to the pc Ethernet socket, then bridge the Ethernet to the wwan on the pc. I could then share the wwan via the router.
Bridge mode basically turns your all-in-one gateway into a modem. You then add a dedicated router to provide the firewall, wireless access, etc. Most gateways are not as good as as a dedicated wifi router + bridges modem combo.
I bought the SB8200 because it had 2 ethernet ports and was gigabit capable. Big mistake. I used that site, whatsmyip/pingtest to see what my jitter/variation looked like and was jumpy as could be. +1 +5 +10 and everything in between. But that's not the worse part. I was doing the test and my wife began to start a YT video and the ping shot up to 150 and like 183. She turned off the video and I tested it a few more times and it happened again. I was like there's no way. The router is plugged into the 2nd port with all devices behind the router except the Ps4 and the console into port 1 by itself. Im not sure how having a switch built in would cause all this jitter and spikes but I kind you not, I switched back to the Sb6183 and the average variant was like .9 and everything looked amazing. More importantly, the spikes went away.
Also, every time I tinker with router settings, the gameplay seems to get worse. I see youtubers out there with moderate nat types tearing it up. So what I do is factory reset the router, and let her go. Jitter, hit detection, inconsistent gameplay all seem to disappear. But the minute I start using qos or port forwarding, the game breaks. I've used the netduma and have seen dumaos. I'm not a fan of how it makes the experience inconsistent. I would be in favor of buying another rout that's not netgear or the model right before they implemented duma os on their devices. I think less is really more but that's my humble opinion. I just want a router with some power and that's all really. The host filtering and "Patented qos" just seem to mess up the gameplay. I will swear my router is dropping packets but I check the ping to the host and it all looks normal. It's weird because it feels like it's like super small micro stutters or something. Idk. I haven't had a good experience with netduma and their OS.
A traceroute the ISP he talking about ends on the 5th hop as long as it comes back they aren not responsible, when a hop fails it does not mean that servers IP failed if it comes back

Al estar bien configurado el modem se convierte en una puerta, no existe en la red solo lo comunica, el enganche con la red externa (WAN) lo hace el router y requiere el nombre de usuario y contraseña del servicio DSL.

I would like just to add a better WiFi router, for the Arris BGW210-700 WiFi from AT&T sucks! In order to do that, I need a WiFi router recommendation together with a good simple step-by-step instruction to make it work with AT&T Arris gateway! Thank you for your video.
I agree. However, with AT&T U-Verse, you have absolutely no choice but to use their gateway. I know that with AT&T DSL, you could use pretty much any compatible DSL modem and/or get a true bridge mode, but with U-Verse, it will only work with the specific gateway they give you and that's it.
You may need to factory reset your gateway. There's usually a small "Reset" button on the back/bottom that you push (use a pen or paper clip) for about 10-30 seconds. This will erase everything from the gateway and get you backup and running.

The second I did that I lost all internet connection and I can’t even log back into the router/bridge to change the settings by a back!
I just got xr700 router and I have Xfinity 1GB and running xb6 what should I do with the Xfinity modem/router xb6. I was using Xfinity's modem/router xb6.
So i have fixed wireless and using a Netgear orbi. As a huge gamer, my console keeps popping up with double NAT. I read that putting the orbi in AP mode fixes it, but it only worked once and has reverted back to double nat even though my router still shows AP mode. I also keep getting "connected without internet" on my PC and my iPhone doesn't connect anymore either. Any help?
How do I make my isp' s router just act like a modem or something so I won't have any double nat or anything then? I want to use a better 3rd party router so that I can have qos and everything.

should be fine. Xfi should only be providing dhcp to your rx500 if set up correctly.
If i add the mac address of my xr500 into the fiber modem dmz it give me open nat and what you think about this way , the fiber model connect directly to the internet and only the router mac address is in the modem dmz , so it allow the router to be open and nat open

Can I bridge a asus router with my 5G modem and will it work?

That is called the dumb switch method. I mentioned my thoughts on it in the video

Exact same problem!! Did you find a solution?
I want to be able to access my netgear router. It's connected to a 2 in 1 Motorola modem. I can access the modem from my computer but not the router
2 separate routers and a LAN cable are needed for a bridge mode. Modem does not count as a router. Only your second router will be used in separate location to extend wifi signal. It will not strengthen signal in bridge mode and it is not for your first router.

You have to set bridge on client (wan) to the gateway of your host the subnet itself usually ending in .0
Ie wan = 10.10.0.0/21
Dhcp=10.10.0.2,10.10.7.254
Broadcast=10.10.7.255
Set lan STATIC 10.10.0.1
Watch the skip :)
I dont use v6 (yet) so idk there

what is bridge mode? Do you know a good website for all the terminology and basics of networking?
Just google it
What it does it will disable internet connectivity along with a WiFi
NAT will be get disable..too....
Only it will acts as a Pure modem to translate signals .....
So Whenever settings up a router behind it...you won't face Double NAT issue

can you change isp modem into other modem?
@@vije2515 your question is very unclear. If you are asking if you can unlock the isp modem with a 3rd party firmware, the answer is yes, sometimes.

well...in my setup , I tried the -4 it was ok ( with one exception, see below), but failed with -6 ...so I am here to get help.
The reason I am using bridge mode is the fact the 3rd party router that I use has NO vdsl input(modem).

The xb6 gateway with gig speeds is capped at 650mbps in bridge mode due to firmware. If not in bridge mode it's fine. Anyone know a workaround?
You Didn't Do a True Bridge Mode a True Bridge Mode Does work on ip v6 if you move the PPOE username to the 3rd Party Router I tested it it works fine with ip v6
That's true.
U-Verse doesn't use PPoE. That's why you have to use the gateway they give you.
Hey, when switching to AP mode you said that I should turn the wireless for my isp gateway/router off. But can't I just use this to extend the range for my wifi given that the wifi credentials are same for both the routers?
What an excellent video. Well explained
Hey John. Why not replace your gateway with a Arris NVG599? It’s a older model than the Pace but it has IP passthrough. I just did the trace test and both, IPv4 and IPv6, were successful. I could then share the wwan via the router.

Best to just use a standalone modem!
At 3 min is the first way to do an ip config, or just let it get a dhcp address and do an ip passthrough and let the gateway give you an IP
Why the bridge mode is broken with AT&T???
Because it's not true bridge mode and there is a firmware bug with the 5268ac that throttles the bandwidth on devices in the DMZ

Thanks for sharing, interesting info
A traceroute the ISP he talking about ends on the 5th hop as long as it comes back they aren not responsible, when a hop fails it does not mean that servers IP failed if it comes back

I agree. However, with AT&T U-Verse, you have absolutely no choice but to use their gateway. I know that with AT&T DSL, you could use pretty much any compatible DSL modem and/or get a true bridge mode, but with U-Verse, it will only work with the specific gateway they give you and that's it.
So how do i turn off bridge mode???
You may need to factory reset your gateway. There's usually a small "Reset" button on the back/bottom that you push (use a pen or paper clip) for about 10-30 seconds. This will erase everything from the gateway and get you backup and running.

Averagely the ISP's modem/router should have a modem mode only, with this option you can dump the router option... Which is good! You can use more professional router like Unifi Security Gateway plus Unifi WiFi poe AC or Edgerouter, Draytek Vigor etc...
I won't contracting with those ISP gives a piece of sh#t modem/router without modem only option... That's it.... Make research before you choose an ISP.
Example I have fiber to home... My ISP just supported me with a media converter with fiber to ethernet and fiber to coax option... I can install whatever I want after that without any problem, because my media converter actually just a converter or I should say "modem".
