The Gaither Vocal Band was formed by Bill Gaither and has had many members over the years. These four are (Left to Right), David Phelps one of the best tenors on the planet, Russ Taff (raspy voice, used to be the lead singer for the Imperials in the 70s and 80s), Guy Penrod (Gray long hair, usually sings lead, and is a phenomenal singer himself) and Bill Gaither (sings bass and the founder of the GVB). They sing (and have sung, and continue to sing with various members) traditional Gospel hymns and such with the typical 4 part harmonies that make Gospel music what it is. Bill Gaither and his wife Gloria Gaither have also written hundreds if not thousands of songs over the last 40-50 years. They are treasures and pillars in the Gospel music community.
It amazes me that Bill's voice is still as strong and pure as it is. I remember singing in a cantata by him when I was 18...and I'm 67 now!! He and Gloria are incredibly gifted. Mark Lowery (writer of Christmas favorite "Mary did you know?") is also a member of the Gaither vocal band
This was in NYC, Carnegie Hall, in early 2002, just months after 9/11. It had been planned long before the tragedy, it was just providence that they were there at that time, singing songs of love and encouragement.
His version of O Holy Night will bring tears to your eyes. No More Night does too, but we all know O Holy Night but until I heard David’s version, I don’t remember ever crying when singing or hearing it at Christmas. David has talent, but more than that, he has a God given GIFT and he uses it 😊
I have had the pleasure of meeting David Phelps on a couple occasions and my wife and I got to spend about 20-30 minutes talking to Guy Penrod and his wife after a show in Albertville, Alabama a few years back. Both of these gentlemen are the real deal. The nicest, most genuine guys you could ever want to meet.
Love seeing you experience these for the first time…it’s what I grew up on. I get excited while watching you get excited…nothing can move the soul like this kind of music for me.
No words can describe the magnitude of emotion this song imparts. I listen to it about once a month, it gives me so much hope and peace. Thank you for your heartfelt reaction. You know your music!!!
I enjoyed your first time reaction to the Gaither Vocal Band. They are a stellar group, and David is the cherry on top. It’s nice to see your appreciation of them.
Bill Gaither ( the guy with the gray curly hair at 4:19) is an amazing singer/ songwriter who has been writing music since the 1950's ... They do a lot of traditional / southern gospel music , check out their website/ Wikipedia for more info . The Gaither Vocal band has had many different members over the years including Mark Lowry , the creator of the song "Mary, did you know? ' you should check out some more of the Gaithers ( search ' Gaither homecoming') and then Check out some of Mark Lowry's Comedy from the 90s
If you ever watch a whole special you'll see they have performance after performance of amazing talent. I recently watched David, Mark, Bill and the cute short guy backing up Michael English and I was shocked again at the depth of talent. Also Mark singing his song Mary Did You Know with voctive ranks up there among the incredible performances that David has. Taranda Greene who is with Canas Voice now, won a Dove Award in 2019, was also with Gaithers. I'm sure we could go on and on.
I have been listening to David for years, over half of the gospel music industry is sitting behind him, some has gone on home to sing for the Lord. But watching this video that I have watched thousands of times before, I got more enjoyment out of watching you. Starting around 9:03 when David hits that note, it hit you, I seen it in your eyes and you just about come up out of that chair in which got me shouting. Thank you for educating us so beautifully on singers abilities it really has help me understand how difficult doing this is, you are a talented young man, may God keep his hand on you throughout your journey. I love to watch the Holy Spirit come down. Bill and Gloria Gaither brought many singers together and cut tapes, the best of the best are in them, and Bill Gaither had the Gaither vocal group in which David sang with them a few years. I hope you listen to him sing to Billy Graham’s wife, it is well with my soul. It will give you the chills. Thank you again for a wonderful reaction.
Loved your reaction. The vocal band are great, but David!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He is just the best. Sooooo many songs (mainly his older ones) give you goosebumps EVERYTIME you listen.
I just watched you watch David Phelps thru four different songs and I have laughed and rejoiced watching you react!! He is amazing, isn't he! Thank you!
The Gaither's have a very deep 'Rabbit hole' so to speak. Everyone sings beautifully and their guest do too, even people in the audience will randomly be chosen and blow the roof off the building!! #THATSINGERREACTIONS
Bill Gaither once commented that this song "belonged to David" and he'd never perform it, again, unless David was singing with them. To my knowledge, Bill has held on to that comment and has never done it without David.
My mama used to be part of the Gaither experience. So I KNEW when I saw the title I was going to have to stop by and see your reaction. It did not disappoint 😆 Your reactions are the best!!
I love this song and their performance was heavenly. Your reaction also was great and your appreciation of their talent is wonderful. Thank you! Praise God!!!!
For you singers out there towards the end that is a C#5 that David Phelps just snatches out of the air and let's it fly. Also if you watch closely when he hits that note a guy standing behind him (Jason Crabb) gets the most surprised look on his face.
I've been to several Gaither concerts and even got a selfie with David Phelps. He's no longer with the vocal band but I still listen to them. David Phelps is my all time favorite ❤
The Gaither Vocal Band has been singing for many years. A couple members have come and gone, but they are always excellent! Mark Lowery, who wrote “Mary Did You Know” was a member. They have some great songs out there. So happy to see you dipping into classic gospel! If you’ve never watched a Gaither Homecoming video, it’s a must!
I'm just finding all these reaction videos to the GVB and David Phelps and I'm so amazed that so many people didn't know them. Their voices are amazing!! My favs from i was a little girl is Guy Penrod and David Phelps! This song in particular lifts me up outta my chair EVERY TIME!!!!!!!!
Thank you, thank you!!! Love, love love this group and David Phelps is the best on this planet for tenor singers. This song is so amazing and so Holy Spirit led that you can't help but feel him move. This song is not played on the Gaither tours unless David is with them. Bill himself said that no one else will sing it unless David is in it, as it's his (David Phelps) song. David was blown away when Bill told him that.
Oh my...I'll tell you that the GVB is always bringing the spirit of our wonderful creator into any environment you listen in. As others have said, over the years some of the members change but it doesn't much matter...if you want to feel the spirit moving in you, the GVB will surely help set it in motion!
This was performed at a Gaither event in New York as in appreciation of the first responders of 9/11. Bill and his wife wrote the song. The choir backing them is comprised of members of some of the best gospel groups in the business.
IMHO......David Phelps is one of the greatest tenors of our time. Check out his song, No More Night and enjoy his high notes and amazing breath control! 🙂👍👏👏👏
Isn't this just phenomenal? I've been watching you review David, and now you've been appropriately introduced to The Gaither Vocal Band. Guy Penrod is the other tenor you heard. :)
Bill Gaither: Bass, and founder of the group. (He's been in the Christian music scene since the 50's) On the far right. Guy Penrod: Lead tenor. Between Bill and Russ. Russ Taff: Baritone. Just to Guy's left. David Phelps: High tenor. On the far left. The GVB has had many lineups over the years, and Bill is still singing (and em ceeing at their concerts) today at 85!
You should definitely check out Ernie Haas and Signature Sound. “Oh what a Savior” is one of my all time favs……”Get away Jordan” is also a barn burner….
I've been to one of their concerts...and it is unbelievable. Bill Gaither, the older man is the one who gathers the singers (he himself if the bass) to form the band. Through the years the members have changed... but Bill, David and Guy are always there. I love them.. great reaction!!
David nor Guy are always there. Guy hasn't been with them since 2009. David left in about 2005 and then left again in about 2016ish. Not to mention over a decade before either of them joinned.
I got to tell you the guy with the long gray hair is also a bad ass singer. You need to watch videos with him singing as well. Of course, David is David. Everyone is a vocal beast in this band, but those are the two to watch like the most often.
I've read a lot of the other comments and I see they've filled you in on the Gaithers History. So I'll just say I love their music through the years! It would have been nice to see this along with hearing it but I understand the copyright thing! Loved your reaction! This is when praising our Lord and savior becomes overwhelming! The Gaithers are surely blessed! Thanks for this reaction!

Gettin the Holy Spirit up in here! 🙏🙌 I remember watching this on DVD with my dad shortly after 911.. When this came on.. Halfway thru I lost it and needed a box of tissues lol. Beautiful song delivered with lots of emotion ❤
Being raised First Church of God ,the movement the Gaithers come out of, have always been so proud of this. Sandy Patti also come from our church. Our church is centered on missions. The Gaithers are true missionaries!

The Gaither Vocal Band is a force. The Holy Spirit is free to flow their music. Check out the song "I Then Shall Live" from their reunion sessions. Powerful stuff. They are more about touching your spirit than entertaining you, and they are really good at it! Great reaction!

Oh, and Bill wrote He Touched Me, The King Is Coming, Alpha And Omega and HUNDREDS of Gospel classics!

@@thiskiwigal well to be fair it seems many roll in and out and get together for reunion specials. It seems like once a Gaither always a Gaither.

My favorite part is always watching Russ Taff’s reactions!
David Phelps voice just sends shivers thru my soul!! Listen to "No More Night"... probably my favorite!!
I have many favorites Nesun Dorma, Angus Dei, Holy.. there's almost no song of his I don't love! ❤
Water! Him singing with his daughter. I love all his songs but that one touches my soul in a very special way

Mine too. No more night is incredible 🙌

David Phelps IS the best and most dynamic tenor the world has ever seen.
definitely agree
II can barely contain myself when David sings. The most anointed voice I have ever heard. His voice brings such glory to God.
AMEN!
I felt that "Yes David". The man's voice is truly annointed by God.
Anthony Burger on the piano and possibly the best piano player ever! Unfortunately he died at only age 44 .
It was a very sad death!!
I always enjoyed how they hype each other up & genuinely appear to appreciate their gifts.
That's Bill's mentoring
David Phelps has the most amazing voice!! "Hide Thou Me" will chill you to your bones!
David was on fire on this night. This performance was powerful and emotional as it came off the heels of 9/11
After that reaction I just want to come hug you!!!!
So glad you realize how excellent they all are!
The Gaithers have been so influential in creating so many contemporary Christian arrangements for churches. I grew up on a lot of their stuff.
Love seeing you experience these for the first time…it’s what I grew up on. I get excited while watching you get excited…nothing can move the soul like this kind of music for me.
David Phelps just took us to church.. lol
I’ve listened to Gaither Vocal Band for years. Watching you discovering them made my day. God bless you sir.
This is CLASSIC SOUTHERN GOSPEL. My very favorite genre of music. All of the singers behind our great singers.
