David is a master of music and a master vocalist. And everyone you seen there behind him is professional gospel singers which is their job. They're not just run of the mill Church singers they travel around the nation singing full time. Now, Bill Gaither has a full Orchestra including an organist. But all the music just like the piano was done live which was probably back behind the singers. But all these groups singing is from an era going by which is my era 60 70s and 80s. Some in the 50s. But you can find David Phelps just by telling Google to show you the Gaither Vocal Band featuring David Phelps and it'll bring up a whole bunch of songs and of different genres. Because other than southern gospel and contemporary gospel he also does Opera. And the man is talented and phenomenal. And I invite you and challenge you to check out him and the Gaither Vocal Band and listen to them sing. But good job on your reaction.
This group of folks are southern gospel singers/groups. Bill and Gloria Gaither the OG's of southern gospel. I grew up with their music. Our little home church choir in Indiana joked that if Bill Gaither didn't write it, we didn't sing it. Lol btw piano is Anthony Berger. He passed away while playing the song, " We shall behold Him". A song about when we see Jesus face to face. 😇
Let's break this down. This young man is onstage performing in what looks like a sweater. Then after 6:23, he reaches for not a holy B flat or B natural but a C#. Not once but three times with resonance and not falling off pitch. DAMN!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nope. This is how these live shows go! I’ve heard David sing this song live many MANY times and it’s just as amazing each time! When this was filmed, the standing ovation lasted almost 10 minutes. David is AMAZING. He also sings with the Gaither Vocal Band. They do a live show in Australia where David leads on a song called “These Are They” ABSOLUTELY LIFE CHANGING!!! Several years ago, this voice kept me from killing myself. His voice is a true gift 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

Hey Jarvis! If you look back when Mr. Phelps starts hitting the higher notes near the end of song there is a man directly behind Mr. Phelps in a red shirt and black jacket ok? At one point he kinda looks like he does a little hop/jump movement and bows over ( like he's feeling the Holy Spirit!) That is MARK LOWRY and he wrote the song MARY DID YOU KNOW along with Buddy Greene. Famous and extremely gifted singer, songwriter, comedian in the Christian Gospel Music Association. Sang predominantly with The Bill Gaither Vocal Band, as did/ sometimes still does David Phelps. Mr Phelps and Mr Lowry are multiple award winning artists. David does his own arrangements. He is a graduate of Baylor University in Texas. He majored in music including operatic. As a Christian he sings mostly gospel. The piano player is the late great Anthony Burger. BTW.. You want to hear what he can do with those chops? Listen to him sing "No More Night"

(just a head's up, he's age 52 in it, which is astounding). There's no shortage of incredible David Phelps' performances. No More Night, We Shall Behold Him, The Dream, Nessun Dorma, He's Alive... tons of great ones. He's one of the greatest male vocalists ever, to be sure. And he's even better in person, which I highly recommend to everyone.

I have seen David live in concert 11 times now, met him 8 times, met his family and been to his home twice for the Barn bash concerts. he is easily the best male vocalist in the world and has been for more than the past twenty years. He is also so humble and gracious...
I would Love for you to listen to David Phelps sing “I Have Nothing” which was the song Whitney Houston sang! David’s version is MAGNIFICENT!! It was performed in David’s home in his living room. BEAUTIFUL!!
Wow! I’ve watched reactions to this probably a thousand times. I search UA-cam specifically for reactions to this performance by David and I’ve never heard anybody describe the ebb and flow feeling that David uses for most of the song. Great reaction!! Also, I think what is missed by many with that powerful transition where the entire chorus comes in is the ever powerful pipe organ! That thing REALLY provides such emotion!

This is a Gaither Homecomming Concert. It was taped live and presented on TV back in 2000. I believe David Phelps and the amazing pianist Anthony Burger, unfortunately passed away not too many years later at about 46 years old.
Bill and Gloria Gaither organized live concerts around the Country and several foreign Countries including Israel. The group which made up the chorus on that song are all very talented individual and groups who are mainly Contemporar Christian Artists.
David did several solos in the concerts, then joined the Gaither Vocal Band which was comprised of several different artists over the years. David eventually formed his own group and even turned a barn on his property into a concert hall and puts on concerts there many time featuring a lot of the artists that performed with the Gaither Homecoming Concerts. Even 24 years later, David is still a spectacular artists and maybe the finest tenor on the planet right now.
David Phelps is amazing but your reaction is probably the best I've heard.

You are right that it seemed like it was arranged for a church setting. That choir was made up with the "Best of the Best' in Southern Gospel and Quartet performers, and this is their ministry.
I could write a book about this song! It was my wife''s favorite Christmas song. We had the VHS of this concert. It was tradition. She passed Dec. 9th of last year. Last year, was the first time I didn't play it in 25 years. I cried the whole video, but thanks for reacting to it!

Amazing rendition - one of the best ever! And very insightful reaction. I watched lots of Gaither Gospel Hours in my younger years with my Mom...this is the ONLY time Bill Gaither ever pulled an artist back out for an extended ovation. He, and everyone else on that stage, and in the audience, knew how special what they had just experienced was.

Unfortunately Anthony the pianist passed in 2006 at 44, but he was one of the greatest ever. David is the greatest singer to ever walk the earth. Truly annointed by God himself.

I had the pleasure of sitting in the front row of a David Phelps concert one time. It was literally a religious experience. I will never ever forget it. I was 14, now I’m 23, and it’s still one strongest memories I have. How could it not be when you hear that kind of power 10 feet from you.

These folks are known as Gaither's Homecoming Friends. David sings tenor in the Gaither Vocal Band at this time in history, abt 2000. Many of the group are prof. singers. The Gaithers make videos and we buy them. This is worship to God -encouragement to us, -and entertainment to whomever. No one sings this song better than David, that I have heard, not even Mario Lanza. He is a very devoted Christian man as well. (I loved Mario Lanza's singing; and I have also compared this to many others including the three tenors.) Even David doesn't ever sing it better than this. This is a very special recording. But my opinion is not that significant, but don't tell anybody.
No one, and I mean NO ONE, can sing this song like David Phelps can!! Of course, that goes for about every song he sings. He is definitely THE BEST! I’ve seen him in concert, and he’s even better live…if that’s even possible. If you get to go see him live…GO!!

Let Freedom Ring by the Gaither Vocal band, with David was done just after 9/11 in Independance Hall and is the same quality as this. It just builds and builds. Perhaps listen even if you don't get a chance to react.

I have listened to this performance (my favorite of all time) over 20 times to hear the reaction of music professionals like you, and your reaction was the very best. You were so spot on, especially when you caught that he did not hold a 9/6 measure, and he did it purposely. With just an excellent piano accompaniment he had the flexibility to use his amazing voice to bring out the strong emotions of a great song he felt deeply.
You are a true professional because this is a difficult performance to appreciate if you are a voice coach who demands full phrasing in perfect meter. You were astute enough to explain that his breathy tones and slight pause made the performance so dramatic. It still moves me after hearing it more times than I can unashamedly admit to!

Your point about arrangement for a gospel singer got me thinking about how genres and styles can transform a popular and old piece into something different.
Even within Gospel music, a Hezekiah Walker would differ from a Tye Tribbett!
The pianist passed away awhile back. He was awesome. Anthony Burger David is my favorite ever!!!
Love your reaction. I love David's voice. Bill Gaither would have done the arrangement. Bill and Gloria are amazing songwriters, I grew up in a little town close to them, and our choir used to say, "If Bill wrote it, we will sing it"
David wrote a song "Hello Beautiful" it will tug at your heart strings.
Anthony Burger is the pianist, David and Anthony arranged this together. They played and sang to each others strengths. Anthony went home to be with the Lord in February 2006. They were a forced to be recond with.
That's how my music professor tested me.

The piano player's name is Anthony Burger. He died while playing for a Gaither concert of a massive heart attack. He wass 44. We miss him so much!
