This was so helpful because I am a sucker for Collen, Christina Lauren, TJR… In one of Haley’s videos she talked about A book called “ Finlay Donvon is killing it” and helped me brunch out of my comfort zone and now I am currently reading the second book 💖

    - No exit by Taylor Adams
    - Dark matter by Blake crouch
    - the kind worth killing by Peter swanson
    - notes on execution
    -The one by John marrs

Ah yes one of my favourites is false witness by Karen Slaughter, I really enjoy her writing style and I NEVER see her on book tok or book tube. I love her and Kathy Reichs. Both some of my favourite thriller/mystery/horror(not paranormal horror) writers. If you haven't read Karen Slaughter you are missing OUT

@@wings2769 she has a whole series about temperance brennen, a forensic anthropathologist, the first book in that series is déja dead but you don't have to read the series in order at all as every book is a new storyline but just with the same main character. First one I read was The Bone Code and that was great! So i recommend that one :)

I hope one day you can get the chance to read The lunar Chronicles series. It is my absolute favorite even though it is sci-fi which I feel is a genre that is not so comfortable for me. There are four main books and each are based on fairytale retelling. Cinder, the first one is based on Cinderella, Scarlet on Red riding hood, Cress on Repunzal and Winter on Snow White. What I love about these books besides the character and the plot is the romance. Absolutely no spice, just cuteness all throughout and there are four main couples so you get to explore a lot. Also, the world building shoudn’t be too hard to understand since it is based in a futuristic era so while some things are different, it is still the same real world like ours. There are two more books, Fairest, which comes between Cress and Winter, and Stars Above which is a collection of short stories after Winter. You don’t necessarily have to read them. I hope you can try the seres out one day because it is absolutely phenomenal!!!!!

I am a Fantasy reader since I was a baby- Percy Jackson, Mortal Instruments and Harry Potter brought me into this world. And also my favorite book of all time is Alice in Wonderland. ✨🥺 I've been trying to experiment other genres like Thrillers (because i love love horror films and i think its the closest thing I could possibly read beyond fantasy). I also read Historical Fictions (since im a history geek snd practically a professional historian) But, I'm trying my hardest to get into the Romance genre, idk 😐 i appreciate a good romance book, like ive read 3 books from CoHo and ive experimented with other books as well. But, If I could choose a genre at the end of the day. It would still be fantasy, because of the complexity and world building- i like books that takes me out of the ordinary circumstances where i live in. You can say im more of a dreamer than a romantic gal. But, im trying my best to read more romance books in the future (thats not CoHo, i love her but i want to discover more books thats not from the same author). I also want to try non-fiction and other genres as well. 🥺 This video makes me want to pickup a book thats not fantasy 💁🏼‍♀️

Also, I REALLY think you would LOVE “A Curse So Dark And Lonely” There is only three books and one spinoff. This book is a Beauty and The Beast retelling but make it YA fantasy. It’s also really really easy to get into and super easy to understand. Our mc is from our world. It’s not the type of fantasy with fae but it’s so good! There is NO spice- there is romance though! I think this book is perfect for you if your trying fantasy again!

Haley!!! Read ‘A court of thorns and roses’ !! You’ll get obsessed!! The spicey parts are so minimal in this book and you can easy skim passed them (i would say maybe 1-2 pages in the first book) - the story is just so good!! You’ll get obsessed with the characters and can’t put the book down. I usually only read romance and accidentally picked up this book and it’s just so good I can’t stop talking about it. for historical fiction I really recommend the pillars of the earth and the other 3 books in that series because although being all extremely long they are sooo well written and make you absolutely fall in love with the genre, characters, author, just everything. the only problem is that they're not "clean" and there is a tw for rape because of the historical accuracy from a period of women exploitation and refusal to let them achieve power.

Loving that you're branching out! I'm also doing that! I typically read YA coming of age stories but now I am trying to read more dark academia so I ordered the secret history and if we were villains. You mentioned it would be hard for you to pick up historical fiction but I have a feeling you'd like "The Stationary Shop" because it is a lot about the moment it takes place in but also about the romance between the two characters.

I have an appreciation for short stories, but I know what you mean. I go through readers mourning after almost every book I finish, so what I like to do is journal my thoughts about the experience and especially the symbolism and parallels I found. It’s just a nice way of giving myself closure and allowing myself to move on to another book

I've always been an avid reader. There are some genres i tend to gravitate toward, however, i always have phases in which i read books about particular topics or try out a different kind of form (e.g. memoir, poetry, essays, ...). I really dive inzo the material and then find new favourites. I'm definitely a mood-reader. I'm glad you're broadening your horizon, there are so many fascinating stories out there

A nice and easy memoir to start with is 'Born a Crime' by Trevor Noah
He has had really interesting life, is a comedian but doesn't seem too obsessed with himself and brings nuanced perspectives on numerous issues without the bolk becoming boring
I read it in 2017, so it's been a while... but i gave it to my flatmate and he really enjoyed it as well

This is such a good idea! I am a fantasy reader and started with They Never Learn by Layne Fargo for my first thriller book. Let me tell you, it’s like a new world that has opened up to me. It’s so darn good! And also agree with you, when you start a new genre you think the first ones are good when the community is like “it was meh” “predictable” lol 🤷🏻‍♀️ But that is the beauty of reading, it’s the same book with the same characters and storyline however hundreds of people interpret it their own way.

This isn’t in your comfort zone but..you should read the I Am Number Four series. There’s some romance but it’s so good! I think it’s like Action thriller something like that but i think you would like it. It’s also fast paced.

Have you ever considered reading a graphic novel book? I would definitely recommend Habibi by Craig Thompson if you want a romantic story and I kill giants by Joe Kelly for fantasy. Both have amazing art and both are good choices if you make a part 2.

Haley!! if you keep reading fantasy you are going to get used to the tropes and you are going to get inside the world building of each book easier even if it is the first time you read about that specific new world, you are going to be able to understand ir faster the most fantasu you read. btw love you and love your videos, i've bern following you since a very long time!!❤

I love love love memoirs! I highly recommend reading “Wild” and “Educated” those are two of my all time favorite memoirs. I love this genre because it’s easy to forget that we all live our own unique experiences in life. Memoirs bring to light the things and life experiences those around you have had that you may be unaware of.

kind of in ur comfort zone but one of my fav genres is ya murder mystery with a touch of romance so i rlly highly recommend the naturals series by jennifer lynn barnes (who wrote the inheritance games!), truly devious by maureen johnson and stalking jack the ripper by kerri maniscalco (this one’s a bit gory)
also recently read a deadly education by naomi novik and i surprisingly loved it! the magic system is interesting (but lowk sometimes confusing) and i LOVED the boarding school setting. also great characters and romance so i recommend!

A really good YA fantasy series is An Ember in the Ashes. The world building is pretty quick because it takes place on more of a dystopian earth and the fantasy aspect is slowly introduced. I read it earlier this year and this series is what first got me into fantasy and now I love it.

For historical fiction I recommend Beneath A Scarlet Sky by Mark T. Sullivan, The Paris Library by Janet Skeslien Charles, and anything by Khaled Hosseini.
For YA sci-fi the Illuminae files trilogy by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff is fantastic!

As a long time fan let me put you on... you said ACOTAR has no spice but that's just the first book. It really eases you in the deeper you get into the series the more fantasy and more spice. But it definitely has made up words but Sarah puts a vocab list! PLEASE read and review it, it would mean a lot to me and i think you would love it!
