Watching a new FZD video is like sitting down to watch a movie you know will be epic. Btw, environmental thumbnails is the exact topic I was looking for tutorials on a couple months back. Unfortunately, hard to believe considering how important this topic is, but there weren't many good tutorials on UA-cam. I think I had found one. So happy for this.... Wish I had it earlier. Thank you FZ!

Btw if anyone wants to know how to create a perfect grid quickly.... Make a black vertical bar and snap it to the left of the canvas. Duplicate it (ctrl/cmd + J) and snap that one to the right. Make 2 more duplicates (4 bars total). Select all 4 layers. Go to Layer > Distribute > Left Edges. This will distribute the bars evenly. You can then create 5 horizontal bars and use this tool to distribute them vertically.

If you want a great program to create grids and perspective lines that works hand in hand with photoshop you can download the program called "Carapace" for free from Epic Games. It only work with Windows so far it think. I highly recommend it.

I think making a series using viewer-created images where Feng shows us how to correct common mistakes we wouldn't know about would be cool... just a random thought, may help us to get past certain plateaus we are hitting in our progress

Thanks again for a superb episode, loved what you said about not getting depressed over failures etc, really helps ! Love how a professional with such a great talent can be so humble and willing to boost up others by teaching and being a guide. You were asking to post something in the comment section about future video ideas. My proposal would be to accept begginers work and paint over or talk about what can be changed, as a person doing this very casual I find myself stuck sometimes in a painting not knowing how to handle it further. Again, Feng. Thanks a lot and keep it up ! ;)

Hi Feng, I wish you and your team all the best in 2015. :) I enjoy watching your videos and I got a suggestion for the future. When you find the time, could you dedicate two full episodes to armor/costume design with the recurring topics being things like:
-Why some elements work & flow well together while others don't?
-How to balance your 'hi-frequency' VS 'low-frequency' detail ratio?
-How to focus spectator's attention to certain areas with details and flow?
-How to avoid over-designing a component of a suit and how to fix such 'overly designed' areas, once they start stealing the show?
The part 1 of such episode could focus on heavily stylized high-fantasy outfits like those used in Tera or Bless, while part 2 could deal with sci-fi suits like those known from Halo, Destiny or Firefall.
Or, if two episodes are too much, then how about making a single episode in which you would take any of your existing Gears, UT or Warframe armor designs and then turn them into a high-fantasy armor? Of course, all the time explaining why certain choices work well, while others won't make much sense and are potentially ruining the design. I am pretty sure people would love to see that.

I think one of the main reasons why I started loving environments so much, is because of you, Feng, and the Design Cinema series. I watched every video this summer, and every single one of them is like a treasure-box full of invaluable advice and tips to guide and keep you on the path you've set out on.
Thank you for making these videos, I seriously hope online tuition could be made available in the near future. Although, as you've said so many times, discipline is everything, and if you have that, it's up to you how fast and well you learn and put the knowledge you gain to practice.
As for the future content question, I love the "Let's draw" series, but having topics cycle every 5 or 10 episodes, I think that would cover a wider spectrum and be more open to various aspects that interest all of us, instead of only one of something. So far you've been covering so many different things, and I honestly love that. It all makes sense and there is some sort of progression from the very first to the very latest video you make. Looking forward to the new developments throughout 2015!
Happy New Year to you and your colleagues at FZD School! You all are fantastic and awesome, so keep rocking our design-socks!! :o)

This random thumbnailing can be done with watercolors too, if you want to try a different medium. I'm doing it right now, inspired by this video, and it's pretty fun. Watercolors are prone to happy accidents, which is great for idea searching like this. You can also take a crumpled tissue and dab it on the still wet colors for more randomness. Then when you have a happy color-texture-cloud on your paper, take ink or a pen or something and doodle your ideas over it!

  • @larto42
    @larto42 9 років тому

    Great as alawys :)
My idea for the new Design Cinema is covering more of a basics like lightening and perspective as well as something what isn't showed anywhere on yt i think: creating pictures with planing your camera and lights like you were on the actual film plan with a crew. Maybe even something about designing in 3d if more people will create content for DC.
I'm sure you'll find great ideas for this! Can't wait to see it :)

Very informational language and ideas, thumbnail sketches by Feng Zhu is very interesting. I try to paint chaotic landscapes but worry about color relationships. I forget to use the color picker and I'm unsure what to detail and what to leave unfinished. Working in Photoshop it's hard to suggest because when you zoom in, so daunting is the detail. But to watch thumbnails done from completely far away is like a great way to study. Why people thumbs down on something so informational I will never understand. Thanks for sharing FZD, Design Cinema is cool because it's rough. Artistic License and fundamentals is something that I personally have a problem with in digital painting. I tend to always want to make things connect perfectly without leaving anything to the imagination. WHy

I would strongly advise you (if you do try to make your videos more 'professional', not to get rid of the stuff that makes your presentaion human and direct. All the small asides, the comments about whats happening in the office, you dog barking, all the little things that make the video 'unprofessional' are all things that make it better.
By introducing the human element you become more than just a blank figre of technical authority, you are a person, you have a particular story and a particular life. This embeds the listener and watcher with what you say. People don't learn well from blank faceless systems, they learn from people. All the human interruptions mean that for each person watching the video on their own, it feels intimate, as if you were addressing them directly as a known and familiar human being.
People absorb information much better when it comes from someone familiar and human that they trust. The information literally almost goes down easier or enters the mind more smoothly. It helps people learn more and more easily. Whatever you do to make your stuff more professional please don't throw away the apparently cheap and simple but actually enormously affective qualities of directness and humanith that they already have.

Hey I'm an online student in the US and I would be very interested in learning from your school. Possibly to prototype it you could offer cheaper classes without credit. Then the responsibility wouldn't be so heavy on your school and name. offer the home work, and content that the students attending the school in person gets, and the critiques. Possibly live sessions over a streaming service to give a more in person experience. Or have students record their process and share it with the instructors. I'd be willing to do that. I believe in you guys, however possibly add a heavily trafficked class forum to chat about projects and socialize in? Just spit balling. But definitely I would sign up.

    This was a fantastic video!
I would really like your advice on something (sorry for the long post ahead): I used to draw a lot up to the end of high school, however once I went to university (Architecture) I started drawing less and less because I couldn’t balance it with all my course work (meaning that right now I haven’t drawn in a few years). I’ll be finished with the course in just one more semester, but what I really want after it is to have a career in Concept Art/Design. I only found out about this (and that it’s what I want to do) last year, which is why I haven’t started working on concept art sooner. But unfortunately, starting a specialized course now is too expensive for me, so I want to try to develop my skills on my own. Is it a viable option and do have any advice on how to approach this?

the other thing he is doing is applying a motion blur to the image, that takes out the details and leaves a generalized color palette of the forms. he probably has this set up as an action or something so he can do it quickly when he pulls in a new image. this is what separates the workflow from straight photobashing.

That feeling, when you get up in the morning, go grab a large mug of coffee, sit down at the computer and check your usual haunts, and see there's a new Design Cinema up :)
You may not show fundamentals in these, but you can't imagine the amount of inspiration and motivation, at least I get from these. I've looked up the stuff elsewhere, and practice on my own, and whenever things start to feel too hard, or like nothing is working, I watch a couple of these, and get my mojo back, and jump right back in to it. Hey Feng, for the next q&A plz answer this.
You said, till 2003 you just drew on paper, for your concept work, in you traditional videos, i've seen your gnomon dvds about traditional drawing (spaceship and environments) those are the kind of stuff you show the the art directors? You think today is important to have that skill represented in portfolios? Thanks

  • @PeterPeter-hi9sg
    @PeterPeter-hi9sg 9 років тому

about Design Cinema going "pro": its the "unpro" vibe that feels better to watch than a formal Gnomon tutorial, for example, that often feel very stiff to get through. The best part about DC is that it feels like someone is sitting next to you after hours and just giving you helpful tips and insight. If DC does go "pro", I hope it retains that feeling, and by going pro, hopefully they will be more frequently posted since more ppl will be working on 'em, thats meh 2 cents :D

Hello Sir, Big Thanks for EPISODE 75, 76 & 77 for thumbnails. Next Episode, Q&A please. My question is - as a total beginner to design process, after completing fundamentals and stuff, how should we choose the subject matter on the very start. Like in basics process, you go from drawing boxes in perspective, to complex vehicles and organic bodies. How to maintain same approach and not losing mind in thumbnail generation because of just being too ambitious, and simply losing patience, wasting time on noodling here and there etc. What is the most simplistic approach, TO DESIGN, even and IDIOT LIKE ME CAN UNDERSTAND( WASTED 2 DAYS on VEHICLE DESIGN, mindless noodling without references, testing my visual library which is STUDENT B type in your Visual Library Episode 52 - thought I am SUPERMAN of Concept art). I think episode 77 - fish fighters was a really helpful, but still I wish it could be boiled down to the base completely, like few more examples done, while you are feeding our GEEK minds with design knowledge. Thanks :)

Merry Christmas!! Didn't sleep! Trying to get ahead! Super inspired/look up to your work ethic, grind to awesomeness! Just so happened landscapes are what I needed motivation to keep tackling.
QUESTION! Any form of G.i. Bill ever be a possible option? Perhaps as a trade school? Nothing wrong with asking.

What are you doing working on Christmas eve?? :)
With the addition of pro video editors, does this mean that Design Cinema will no longer be free?
Many thanks for this Feng... an early Christmas present ;)
Good luck with the new premises and all the best for 2015!!

I am looking to get into digital painting, and I am currently choosing a graphics tablet. Any advice on what I should get? I have an absolute maximum of £100 to spend, however less if I can get away with it. In addition, do I need Photoshop or is GIMP (Or another free software if you know of one) good enough to get started? Note: I will still use the tablet for 3D sculptingeven if I find I can't paint, so I don't mind spending all of my savings!

Q&A. How much time do you allocate yourself per week/month to spend with family, friends, exercise, healthy eating/cooking, cinema etc basically everything which is not art related. Is it important for you to spend time out of the office? Too much of a good thing is bad!!!

Hi Feng! (And other knowledgeable artists!) Is there a shortcut for blurring the images like Feng? I don't see him going into the menus, so does he have it hotkeyed or something? If so how can I do that? Thanks for any help!

FZD would probably do good in physics and math...
math is an artform all the things he says in the video can span into other fields even science. The only thing is that unlike art, you need to translate it in to the universal language. You can't turn it in as is. This is what turns people off from math. read about srinivasa ramanujan. He would make claims about math but since he didnt speak the universal language he was brushed off.
just know this, at the higher level, math and physics is about imagination...explaiing how your imagination fits in the real world decides if people think you are crazy or nobel worthy...
Boltzmann commited suicide when nobody accepted his work , his thoughts... some years later they praised his works as essential...unfortunately he would never know... he focused too much on what people thought of his work at the time. He should have took the critisizm at the time and moved on.
by the way universal language is the equivalent to what he said about showing the art to designer to executive.

Loving these videos. Could you do a tutorial on shading sometime? Would be appreciated. Unless there's already stuff up about that, in that case thanks.

Thanks for the Christmas present! I started to find environment design much more interesting thanks for the design cinema. For future thumbnails you could maybe do one for land automobiles? As it's something I believe was little shown in the series until now.

The biggest thing that really blocks me from betting on this career is the oversaturated market. I know that there's no space for me. I have other things that I love as much as drawing and painting, so I know that I never could focus single-mindedly on it :/ And it irks me to no end.
At least I can enjoy the nice ideas from these videos as I flail around with my pencils and brushes at home. xD
