  • Ghost in the shell scene where Saito acts as a mercenary and supposedly shoots Matoko's special forces United Nation's team due to the fact they are carrying a nuke, although it's very sketchy and possible just a story due to the fact it was said to throw people off in a poker game.
    Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. 2nd GIG, Episode 14
    The song at the beginning is From the Roof Top, starting at about 2:00, and then Flying Low, with Torukia playing during the Scene with the major and Saito's stand-off (there are several songs called Torukia by the same cast, and this one is a Chorus vocal).

    the key to fighting a sniper is removing an article of clothing, one at a time.
    begin with your helmet, work your way to the harnesses, then eventually your shirt. that way all those clothes don't impede your movement. that's what I learned from this video

      @colelawton4901 9 років тому +10

      John Smith Yeah but the purpose for you being on the battlefield isn't survival, it's commander's intent. Mission completion requires both tactical knowledge and creative intuition. Minimalizing casualties to meet go/no go requisites for actions on the objective doesn't always mean the cautious answer.... it means weighing your risks and rewards to come to the most logical answer. Does that make sense?
      Caution doesn't win battles, and neither do survival instincts. In fact, the purpose of military training is to create muscle memory that counteracts the fight/flight survival instinct in humans. That way troops on deck will respond immediately with violence of action and conduct battle drills instead of freak out and go fetal.
      In other words what i'm trying to say is I don't like the phrase lol caution sometimes gets people killed because they are too timid to make risky decisions.

    • @everybodydothatdinosaur519
      @everybodydothatdinosaur519  9 років тому +27

      Cole Lawton Well, caution is not the same as fear. When the opportunity presents itself, you need to attack. It's about taking calculated risks and acting when you absolutely have to.
      But, in theory, caution isn't about not acting, it's about knowing when you act. Proceed with caution isn't necessarily the same not proceed at all, but proceed with tact. You can be cautious without necessarily being slow.
      However, I do see your point. xP

Nowadays, sniper rifles and their ammunition can easily go through a helmet like that, and most bullet resistant vests (calling them bulletproof is really a bad term, that would mean the bullet will always be stopped by the vest, most vests are only resistant, though they still do provided adequate protection) but again, it all comes down to the weapon, ammunition, and protective gear.

If you know you have to move out of cover to rescue one of your guys or something valuable like say, a nuclear bomb, you provide concealment when you don't have cover. You also don't stand there all day taking 5 minutes to carry someone, knowing full-well you're standing wide out in the open to be shot.

      John Smith For a bit, but you have to take into consideration the sniper. Maybe he can see through it with the rifle, or he could be a cyborg himself or maybe he's just that good. Even if it worked in allowing them to move that's a lot of ground to cover there and back, their window is small. Them being fast 'cause they're cyborgs doesn't mean they're safe from having their head taken off by a sniper they don't even have the location of. Fast enough to get there carry someone back? Even with their speed and strength that's too uncertain. Information is key; along with strategy and caution. All of that is too much of a gamble, they don't have a good play and that wouldn't be it.
      And again this is all assuming they even have smoke grenades (I haven't seen the episode in a while so I don't remember if they do or not). And if they did, yes not using them here is wise. Use something like that when it can give you a tactical advantage. Just saying.

    • @everybodydothatdinosaur519
      @everybodydothatdinosaur519  10 років тому

      jrupert1 Well, they used smoke grenades from their grenade launchers to cover their position later in the operation, and special forces and regular infantry use them to conceal their positions all the time.
      If it worked well enough, he wouldn't be able to see the target, and he's likely using a scope, considering that none of his shots were perfectly accurate. In any case, it would at least give them more time to try to grab the wounded individual, since they're going to move in to try to grab him anyways.
      The distance seemed pretty short, since it didn't really take moving much, just the medic was rather slow.
      But of course, a team of multiple countries in a single special forces team carrying a nuke on foot when it could have been in a mechanized unit (of which the reason for the nuke was never really explained in the first place) is a little unorthodox in the first place.

    • @XenogearSolid
      @XenogearSolid 10 років тому +6

      John Smith Yes, that's what I was wondering about. It doesn't change that this would be a tactically illadvised moment to waste them. Them attempting was brash and stupid. The wounded were in the open, yes not far from some of the soldiers but he is from the cyborgs.
      And in an age of cyberbrains trusting concealment to smoke at this unideal position would be foolish. We have technology now that makes smoke not all that effective. While some of the soldiers are acting foolish, that doesn't mean Motoko would risk her team or herself to achieve something so little with so much risk.
      Yes, he's using a scope but like I said the scope could have tech rendering smoke less effective. Like the fact that he can see and shoot from multiple angles. And nothing would be stopping him from shooting into the smoke. Smoke screens are good for distraction (which wouldn't work on Saito) and moving in close quarters. My point is, yes there is a chance they could do this and it'll all work out but on the battlefield you don't risk this.
      And his accuracy is perfect I don't get what would make you think his shots were inaccurate. He did what he wanted to do. You think he missed kill shots on accident? It's to use them for bait. Notice how he waited for them to enter an area in the open? This scene is a tribute recreation of the sniper scene in Full Metal Jacket.

      This similarity to this scene to Jackson's last stand in Saving Private Ryan is uncanny. Saito is left handed, with a rifle designed for a right handed person (you can tell by how he has to reach over the stock to chamber another round.) Jackson is also left handed, and reloads in the same manner. Both a church and a clocktower are in this scene, same as during the last firefight in Saving Private Ryan.

    Another thing that was always weird to me, at the end was, he supposedly guessed incorrectly that she wouldn't have mid range targeting software. So, okay, wut?
    Why wouldn't she already have mid range targeting software? Why would she be downloading it from a satellite? Is this something soldiers usually do, not keep the targeting software on them? Because as a combat soldier, you would presume this targeting software would be among the first things you downloaded, even if you had to keep it on external memory drives. Apparently, it's common enough to not download it to make him think that she'd download it in the middle of combat.
    And she shot the bullet out of the air? With that kind of accuracy, why not just shoot him a dozen times earlier when he exposed himself? Why not used infrared to spot his location, why didn't he switch to a semi auto weapon, at least a pistol so he'd have more than one shot? Instead he used a slow moving weapon just ot allow her to do that. Most snipers will use at least one back up weapon, so, why would she expect him not to? None of it really made any sense.
    I'm supposed ot believe that it's usual enough to be predictable that people don't just have targeting software on them all the time, and that she could bluff that she didn't? Wut? There's a thousand different things you could have user there. It was a cool episode, but the more I go and look back at it, the stupider it seems to get.

      Trung Le You can carry two guns, in fact carrying a backup gun is rather common, especially among Snipers. My point was that, he could have had even a pistol as a back-up weapon, instead of relying on the sniper rifle. It's like, 2.5 pounds or less.
      My second point was in a later scene, which was she took out the satellite communication jammer that Saito had, she shot it, to try and make a bluff that, she was downloading aiming technology. She ended up shooting a bullet out of the air, which, seems a bit ridiculous.

    So, here's what I think. He made the ending up, and a few other parts since it followed a movie (to deliberately throw off the other person), but the rest of it is true.
    Since Saito is a sniper, he thinks like the enemy, and thus imagines the story as himself in the sniper's shoes. That's also why he's so good at poker, since he can think like his enemy and knows what they are doing and how to prepare for it; a person wouldn't suddenly gain that ability after one fight with Motoko.
    And how did he know the conversations the people on the ground, for instance?
    But it's all speculation.

    • @stevenkimdmd
      @stevenkimdmd 7 років тому

      Saito joined Motoko's team. So he could have learned of the conversation after the fact.
      "Following the movie" was admitted by Saito not because that's true but because he felt it was meaningless to argue against it.
      Most movies are made "based on an actual event" anyways. I felt Saito's admission meant nothing.
      I believe all of Saito's narration really happened in the past.
      And yes, one can acquire a skill after a single fight. Especially in the future.
      You have to remember this is a distant future and almost everyone has electronic brain.
      Turning off facial expression and creating a poker face is as easy as flipping a switch if they chose to do so.

It was mentioned in a UA-cam-show, I think DigiBro's overview of the franchise. It was so expensive they didn't have money to continue it beyond the 2nd season (Second Gig). But yesterday the director said on Twitter they may have some cool news relating to it, after a fan asked about the 3rd season. As much as I love this scene, the more and more I go back and watch it, the crazier it seems to me. I'm supposed to believe that, the Japanese government not only let a traitor, mass murderer, serial killer for hire, mercenary, who killed multiple special forces individuals and countless others, who tried to steal a nuclear weapon, you know WMD's, mass murder, terrorism, not only live, not only go free, but be put into a police unit, and not just any police unit, a special forces police unit with secret clearances, specifically designed to save hostages and have self autonomy and such?
    I like to believe this isn't true, particularly because I liked Saito and the others characters, but now of course he's a mercenary in the new retcon of Ghost in the shell Arise, so, that's been changed around quite a bit apparently. And that the Japanese government would allow a POW who kill all these people to go on to become a member of the capturing force's personal squad... it's just, it seems quite a bit far fetched. It's something I don't like to believe; I don't like to believe Motoko would forgive this person, let alone make them part of their squad on rescue missions, or that people would be okay with this guy walking around in public with a gun ever again. In other iterations he still comes to the aid of his fellow police buddies, and seems to genuinely care about them and civilians, even though he's also shown to be a mercenary who kills his own countrymen and military personnel for money, so it kind of makes no sense. In just a few short years he goes from being a pyscho killer to suddenly caring about people and having a higher purpose? I might have believed pazu was a criminal informant who worked in the Yakuza or something, but this is just nearly unbelievable, or just over the top. This episode always seems to leave a stain on an otherwise amazing series.
    What would be cool is if, see, he sees things from the enemy's perspective, so well, that he practically becomes the enemy, he sympathizes with the enemy, he understands their motivations. So, when he tells the story, he tells it from the point of view of the enemy sniper, because from Saito's point of view, that is how he sees the battle, to a point where Saito himself doesn't even imagine himself existing on the battlefield. I mean, he knows all the conversations on the ground, exactly what's going on right, almost like he is there, and it seems rather strange they wouldn't have a counter-sniper or marksmen in their squad, being a special forces unit, as well. Perhaps the "first order" thing was him being told by Motoko to kill the enemy sniper, even though he sort of didn't want to. He had simply followed Motoko up to that point because he agreed with her, not because she told him to, but he might have done it this time simply because she said so.
    As well, why carry the nuke on foot; why not carry it in a mecha tank, which is just as agile and were shown earlier in the war scenes, so they apparently exist already, as do cyborgs. You could drive it in and park it in a building, and it would be nigh impossible to take out, where as a suitcase would not only be harder to carry, as it would be better in a backpack, but easier to take away and steal, as well as spot in the open. Why carry in a nuke on the ground at all? Especially with space based kinetic weaponry and the like, and the micro machines mitigating much of the effect. And why were the special forces so dumb in this scene, I mean making mistakes, okay, they need to show why the major is so boss, but they made rookie mistakes even regular infantry wouldn't. None of it really makes sense, but it makes for a cool action shot. Ignoring all the obvious stereotypes, of course.
    I like to think the background to ghost in the shell is more or less pointless and unnecessary, as after I went back and looked through a lot of it I realized it was either a jumbled mess, made no sense, or simply was nonexistent; sometimes it even changed, multiple times in the same episode. Especially cross seasons. But it's an awesome episode, both for the action scenes, the character interactions, the style, and many more reasons, but the background itself seems rather horrible. I've come to realize that the background to the show is more or less irrelevant, but still, kind of weird.
    So basically, my version is better; nope, too late, already done it, it's canon now. Can't take it back.

      The whole episode is on youtube. He gets pissed at how the war is being handled, and signs up for a mercenary unit. In the U.S, the Army Special Forces train indigenous troops in combat, some of which have fought against us in the past. They trained the mujahedeen, back in the 80s, to fight against Russia in Afghanistan, and the CIA provided crates of Stinger missiles to knock down the Russian's Hind helicopters that were tearing the Afghans apart. Now, lots of those U.S funded AK47s and RPGs are being used against our ground troops.
      As to his being on a secret military unit, Section 9 has a long history of acting outside of the government and military in this series, so it's not too far of a stretch that Aramaki would hire a sniper with a questionable background, just to get a world class shooter on their team.
      Lastly, Paz was in the Yakuza, so the unit has a history of hiring members with a questionable past, in order to get the skills necessary to do their job.

    • @everybodydothatdinosaur519
      @everybodydothatdinosaur519  9 років тому +1

      TRoss240 Actually, the mujhadeen did not receive any training from the U.S., and there was very little mixing between them and the taliban, particularly considering that they fought each other, and sadly Massoud, the leader of the organization, was assassinated by the Taliban 2 days before 9/11, or 9/9. They received money funneled through the president of Pakistan, who also unfortunately died under mysterious circumstances and a power restructuring began, leading to new leaders which created the Taliban. These two groups fought against each other extensively, differing in many ideological views. The U.S. also does not produce Ak-47's.
      Pazu could be an informant, and is shown in some iterations to be an under cover cop, so the exact details behind him are never explained. The difference between pazu and Saito, is that while Pazu, an organized crime member, might have been born into the Yakuza and forced into it against his will, since it's very family oriented, and might not have killed anyone or committed any major crimes, could be seen as a good guy in unfortunate circumstances who primarily provides information about organized crime (an important task of a special police force), but who appeared to be able to handle himself, and later was given some missions in field activity.
      Saito, on the over hand, is a mass murderer, serial killer for hire who tried to steal a nuke. Pretty much unforgivable, and the guy would show close to no loyalty so, he would be an incredible liability to have, particularly in an anti-corruption organization.

      Vesphuong Yeah it does kinda. Usually I'm upset about when x thing sorta copies y thing but for some reason not so much here. Probably because it feels a lot of heart went into this scene vs a lazy copy. Like when the sniper was using a different gun to confuse him. And it is oddly realistic for a cartoon like the sniper wasn't just picking them off like instantly even if his crosshairs are on half of the exposed body like at 4:41.

      +Vesphuong it's a tactic to pin people and make them risk their lives to save an incapacitated soldier.

    One of my favourite episodes.
    I see people point out errors, but i was totally into it when i saw it and i still think it works great.
    The way both sides predicted each other and used tactics that weren't blatantly explained to the viewer really help to convince me that these are intelligent characters that know their stuff.
    I'm sick of "intelligent" characters written by stupid people that just know everything, happen to notice every relevant detail and basically don't seem intelligent by themselves, but rather as if they read the skript.
    Scenes like this make me feel like the characters actually had to solve the situation by themselves instead of being chosen by the author as the one that happens to solve the conflict like in a cheesy detective story with a single right solution that is written in the skript.

      Hellbound Angel Bringing up something that happened over 70yrs ago is irrelevant given the treaty of cooperation and security between two nations. If japan is attacked by a foreign threat the U.S. will give military assistance in combating the threat to Japan. Since Japan's military purpose isn't for an outward military campaign. So if I depended on a nation for many things one of the biggest being " heavy military backing" yea I'd call them my best friend. Especially that friend being a nation as powerful as the United States.

      +justin fleming fair point but some people even today still make it a controversial matter that while the US had every right to do it the p pole even some Americans believe that nuking an entire city vaporizing 100s upon 1000s of innocent civilians was too excessive.
