  • Beginning at about 4:30, over a period of about 2 hours, Confederate soldiers from two divisions of Longstreet’s Crop and Union troops from the 3rd, 5th and 2nd Corps had fiercely fought for control of the Wheatfield. Hood’s and McLaw’s rebel brigades succeeded in pushing out two of Sickles and one of Barnes’ Union brigades, only to be themselves subsequently chased out of the Wheatfield by Caldwell’s Division of the 2nd Corp. Control of the now trampled field of grain had already changed hands twice, and the fighting was far from over. This installment of the Wheatfield fighting begins where Part II left off. Caldwell has retaken the field, but is about to be surprised from the west by yet another Confederate brigade, led by Gen. Wofford. His fresh units undertake an aggressive assault reinvigorating the energies of the earlier victorious rebel brigades pushed out by Caldwell, and now the tables are about to turn yet again….

    Despite opinions to the contrary General Sickles forward deployment of the Third Corps was not a disaster as portrayed by some authors and scholars. Two of the three divisions of Longstreet's Corps had been all but exhausted by battle and the union line on Cemetery Ridge was untouched. All union forces were securely in place on the field. Had Longstreet been able to strike directly at the Cemetery Ridge line at 4:30 pm the results could easily have been much different. In all probability union forces would have to counterattack confederate forces lodged on Cemetery Ridge. Great presentation!

    I learned recently that my great great grandfather fought in the 59th Georgia in the Wheatfield. He and his older brother (in the 5th Texas over by Devil's Den I believe) both were paroled at Appomattox. That they both survived the four years they were in the war is astounding.

    I have wondered had the right of III Corps not went out so far to the Peach Orchard and Emmitsburg Rd and had a slightly shorter, but still more forward line and V Corps deployed on Cemetery Ridge and Little Round Top when Longstreets attack first started how vastly different would the 2nd Day's event have changed. outside of some ineptitude from Barnes division commanders the Wheatfield portion of the battle went pretty well up until Wofford moved in. Had VI Corp been able to come in slightly further south say from Round Top, they could have crushed Hood's division and possibly rolled up Longstreet's entire line. A little more time and some better coordination and you are looking at a 2nd Manassas style of rout only on the Confederate side. amazing battle, so much to learn and every little thing adds to all the others

    Just watched all three parts - amazing work of scholarship and depiction! Best presentation of the Wheatfield Nightmare I have seen anywhere!
    This should be anyone’s first choice in studying this battle-within-the-battle-of-Gettysburg!
    I do recommend also the wonderful presentations by GNMP’s Rangers, who go out and walk the actual ground on which this unbelievable mutual mauling occurred, but watch those as a supplement - these animations and commentary are the way to Understand the Wheatfield! Full Marks ❤️!

    I enjoy very much your work of putting this together!. I WATCH it with much pride when I see my Daddy's side of my Gr-Gr- Grandpa 7th New Jersey Vol. Also on my Mothers side my other Gr-Gr-Grandpa fought with the 2nd Virginia Appomattox Raiders Calvary against Gen. Custer just east of the town!. But Thanks so much for educating and keeping the battlefields story alive!. It was one of my reasons for eventually coming to Gettysburg to visit and take a picture at the 7th New Jersey Monument and also the plaque of the Appomattox Raiders Calvary of Gen Fitz Hugh Lee.

    Thank you for these videos. Makes it pretty obvious the Confederates never stood a chance attacking at Gettysburg. Ground was just too strong with too many artillery platforms. I didn't know Semmes' brigade was mauled by enfilading artillery like that. Longstreet should have been relieved of command after this. It was a complete debacle on the corps commander level.

    My GG Grandpa was in the 50th Georgia, I got to visit Gettysburg
    In July 2001, 138 years later, couldn't get to visit the Rose farm, was in my Father in laws motor home. General Seemes was mortality wounded by artillery, my GG Grandpa was driving the wagon for Longstreets Headquarters in January and February
    1863 then he was in a hospital at Petersburg Virginia in June 1-8 1863 as a paroled prisoner, That's as close as I can get in his records to Gettysburg. He could have been captured at Chancellorsville anyway couldn't believe they had record's still
    From that time. But still not much, never knew he was in the civil war till I started researching. His future brother in law was only 16
    and was wounded at Gettysburg in the 50th Ga.

    What time of day was the 7th SC forced off the stony hill? I see they remained in the rear by the Rose house for the duration. Were they that badly mauled? My GG Grandfather was in the 7th.

      Tim - When you watch this video, or any others in our series, there is a clock that is displays in the top center of the screen. Everytime we click the "Animate" button the units begin to move and the clock ticks away. Keep in mind the times displayed are approximate. If you replay the video, you will notice that at about 6:10pm, Kelly's brigade is heavily engaged with Kershaw's right wing, and the 7SC is beginning to fall back. By the time they withdrew from Stoney Hill, gathering and reorganizing at the Rose Farm, their fighting at GB was pretty much over. They began with 409 men and sustained 113 reported casualties (28%). Log into our website: GettysburgAnimated.com and request log in credentials for the APP - with it you can move anywhere on the battlefield, at anytime, and thus follow the 7SC everywhere. If you don’t mind me asking but can you do the fighting on little round top but to be specific the fighting that took place on the right of the union line on little round top and I am asking because on the right of the union line at little round top were the brave men of the 140th New York infantry regiment of weeds brigade under the command of colonel Patrick Henry O’Rourke but also on the right of the line a gathering of union officers was held and among the officers was captain Augustus p Martin the commander of the artillery in the 5th corps but there was also general Sykes, Brigadier General Weed and 1st Lieutenant Charles Edward Hazlett and while the officers were gathering general weed was mortally wounded by a confederate sharpshooters or snipers in devils den and weed asked for hazlett to come to his aid but then Hazlett was shot in the head while kneeling down to hear weed and Hazlett, Weed and O’Rorke would be buried on the property of my 4th great grandparents Jacob weikert and Hazlett and O’Rorke would be buried in the vegetable garden while weed would die in the basement of my ancestors house and he died in the basement because the rest of the house was occupied by Union soldiers and my ancestors farm was the 5th corps field hospital and I know that it was because located within the museum in the visitors center is a kitchen table and the table was my ancestors kitchen table however it was put in a museum because stained on the table is the blood of the union and confederate soldiers who were amputated on the table.

      Thank you for your coment. Yes, we will be producing a video (probably two or three parts) on the occupation and fighting for Little Round Top, July 2nd. We'll be sure to include your historical points in the video. They are good ones.
      Also, take note here, all of our videos are "extracted" from a massive animation of the ENTIRE Battlefield and Battle. You can use the animation to explore for yourself what took place the afternoon of July 2 on LRT. Log in to GettysburgAnimated.com and request login credentials to use the APP.

      @gettysburg-fullyanimated  11 місяців тому

      Thanks for your comment/question. Burbank's brigade was the Second Brigade in Ayres' Division of Sykes' 5th Corp. Day's brigade was the First Brigade in that same division. Look in the index of any book featuring a detailed narrative of the Wheatfield fighting and you'll find them referenced. For example, in Harry Pfanz's book "Gettysburg - Day Two" read all about them beginning on page 296. You can also see the detailed movements of how they got to the eastern edge of the Wheatfield by logging into the APP that is available on the website: GettysburgAnimated.com.

    Why did Tilton withdraw?

    • @gettysburg-fullyanimated
      @gettysburg-fullyanimated  Рік тому

      Good question. Per the historical narrative of author Harry Pfanz (as well as most other historical writings) faced with pressure from Kershaw to his front, Tilton alledgedy executed Barnes' precautionary order, to withdraw back thru the woods toward the WF road, earlier than desired - without putting up too much of a fight against Kershaw. You can hear this narrative and see the tropp movment at about the 18:43 mark of the video.

    • @gettysburg-fullyanimated
      @gettysburg-fullyanimated  Рік тому

      Thank you for your comment. You're noting the problem we face when attempting to both illustrate and syultaneously narrate the actions of numerous regiments and/or brigades in conflict with each other; specifically we can only "talk" about one thing at a time. As such it becomes necessary to show the same overall movements while the narration changes focus to a second, third, even fourth adjacent battle vingette. Yep - we end up, as you pointed out, "repeating the same movements with different narration." :-) In future projects, we'll make every effort to keep such visual repetition to a minimum
