Gettysburg - Day 1: Heth vs. Buford, 6:00am thru 10:00am
(Blooper note at bottom) This video is the first in a SERIES of highly detailed animations of ALL troop and artillery movements and engagements, covering the entire Gettysburg battlefield on Day 1. This installment covers 6:00 thru 10:00 am - the time during which Buford’s cavalry defended against the arrival and deployment of Heth’s infantry. It sets the stage for the second installment will show and discuss the mid-morning major fighting in McPherson Woods and at the RR cuts, between 10:00 am and Noon. We are changing our “regular” presentation format in this series, using numerous present-day photographs to better define the “flat” satellite images shown in our main APP animations. For folks who have never been to the Battlefield, we hope this will add to the discovery experience. Please leave us feedback as to whether you think the present-day photos “add to” or “clutter up” the flow of the main battle animation. (Blooper note: We mistakenly referenced the 42MS as being the 42NC at the 13:07 mark. Our apologies to MS.)

The Charge of the 1st Minnesota at Gettysburg
Good stuff. I have never tired of studying the First Day.
Devon = DEVIN!
The use of satellite and on-the-ground photos is phenomenal. I've read a great deal about the battle in general and the first day in particular, (including the Pfanz book) and this video a terrific supplement to these sources.
wasn't it the 42nd Mississippi going down the railroad cut with Davis's brigade, not the 42nd North Carolina?
You are absolutely correct! We made an error referring to the 42MS as being the 42NC. Thank you for pointing out this narration mistake. We have made a notation of this "blooper" in the video description.
Absolutely superb !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Very good work easy to understand
My 2nd great grandfather, Milton S Lawhead, fought with the 149th PA Bucktails at the McPerson Barn on day 1
Best series on Gettysburg.
This content is Brilliant. I've gotten the app on my phone and used it for hours following the Green Mountain Boys. I cant wait to purchase a Computer to fully utilize the App. I will also be purchasing the full battle after getting a Computer!
Absolutely fantastic! Great channel.
My Christmas gift came a few days late (but then again so did Jesus' gifts from the magi)! Thank you for your work! Even after days onsite in the last year (new resident to Dillsburg), spending dozens of hours exploring, I still get turned around trying to figure out the history of the battle. Your work helps a TON, esp for that first day which (sadly) goes relatively unsung. I'm finding the movement the days leading up to the battle to be incredibly interesting, enabling me to play "What if" and "Why didn't they" games in my mind. Again, thanks, hopefully I meet you in person someday soon.
I can’t wait for the second video and I can’t wait because in the area where Archers men were there was a quarry and there’s a possibility that two of my 3rd great grand uncles Daniel F Pittenturf and George E Kitzmiller quarried in this quarry.
Had 'em a boxing match there, did they? Just joshing, had to read it twice. Learnt right quick where you text was going! So those kinsman of your were quarrymen, just think Iffen they were about a hundred years into the future. They could have been in Liverpool, G.B. a playing in that band called The Beatles.😊 I know, a smart-aleck in every bunch.
@ no not exactly they worked in a stone quarry and someone who works in a quarry is called a quarryman and they weren’t from G.B they were citizens of the USA whose family’s came from Germany and England but mostly Germany aka deutschland.
Thank you for this most accurate and detailed depiction of Day 1 I have ever seen. Sadly most documentaries leave out Cutler’s brigade as if they never existed, and instead skip to the Iron Brigade as if they were first on the field. How refreshing!
Salient: phonetic is 'Sai-lee-yent'.
I have enjoyed this APP. I wish I had more time to enjoy it. Highly recommended
And I bet Omar never heard of the 1st Minnesota. Brave men
A+ , Thank you Excellent animation and explanations... Have you done this for 2nd Manassa ? I would love to see all of John Pope's brilliance in this kinda detail :)
Excellent animation 👌 Thank you
This app is such a TREASURE to have! I first contacted TVM Enterprises earlier this year to inquire about using the app for a series of virtual tours of the Gettysburg Battlefield that I was planning on putting together over the Summer. Tom was such a pleasure to work with in helping me acquire a license for use on the app, and I am forever grateful for his assistance and for having this app in my personal arsenal of resources to use for continued Civil War study. I absolutely recommend that you go support this work; Thanks again!
I have this app and it really is all that and more. Hoping for more videos with the American Battlefield Trust…
Brilliant!!!
My gr8 gr8 william joyce sewell 5th NJ was wounded 2 x in Gettysburg. Moh was awarded to him for chancellorsville . He passed in 1901 and was interned in camden NJ.
the union brigade commanders all had excellent situational awareness here
except of course Sweitzer lol
Your side by side animation is perfect. We need more of these!!!!!
I think it is a great addition. The ABT videos are great, but it is nice to have some orientation from the map and see where all the troops are moving towards. Also, the map animation is wonderful and the mix of on the field geography enhances the product.
Shyanne Springs
Thank you for these videos. Makes it pretty obvious the Confederates never stood a chance attacking at Gettysburg. Ground was just too strong with too many artillery platforms. I didn't know Semmes' brigade was mauled by enfilading artillery like that. Longstreet should have been relieved of command after this. It was a complete debacle on the corps commander level.
This is awesome! Great idea.
Are there more vignettes that delve into Wright's dramatic penetration (off screen to the south) after the 30 minute time stamp? I've seen the solid video regarding the 1st Minnesota, but having a discussion about the 19th Maine will address the last few implications raised by the bravery of the 19th Maine! - - Five Notable Notes - - o Wright's units are lined up opposite The Angle in the Federal Line; this is only about 500 feet away from where Picket's Charge lands on Day 3 (with much worse results). o In a world of perfect knowledge, I too would have stopped at the same place that Posey's units stopped. North of The Angle, Meade's fishhook begins its curve, making reserve units much more numerous and available to reinforce any attacks north of The Angle. An "en echelon" is rarely intended to run the entire length of the defender's line. o Accordingly, we might examine this question: If (a more obedient) Mahone had marched forward along with Posey's last units, would he have noticed the Union's massive 1,800' gap south of The Angle, defended by just 2 disconnected Federal Units (1st Minnesota & 19th Maine)? o If Mahone's units had kept pace with Wright and Posey, would there have been a reasonable expectation for Mahone exploit this temporary gap by shifting behind, and then to the right of, Posey's line of march. Supporting Wright's advance by being immediately available to Wright's rear - - providing a rotation of rested units and refreshed ammunition - - may have been just enough for Wright and Mahone to have punched a hole in the Federal line just south of The Angle. o While Posey's units would technically be exposed on their left, by Posey "refusing" his left wing, Wright and Mahone might have had enough time to change the course of Gettysburg history on Day 2!
More vignettes are coming, we promise. Wright's brigade advance on Day 2 to "beyond Day 3's High Water Mark" will be one of them.
Amazing to see it with the narration. What a service you have done to all!!
The addition of the animated maps was a great idea.
Thought it looked great and gives way more context than just someone pointing in a direction. I know doing it “Live” isn’t easy but to add the overhead afterwards would help a great deal in understanding what was truly going on.
Loved it!!!!!
"Yes, the addition of the maps is excellent!" Agree 100%
Just came back from Gettysburg, what a difference it made having reviewed the maps and printing out some. I had a MUCH better understanding of the movements and positions of Unit. SO well worth the cost. Great job.
Pulls it all together it’s great stuff
Graphics greatly enhanced the presentation!
Definitely a useful addition to help picture what is happening. I saw this incident in a whole new way. Thanks 🙏🏿
This is an outstanding enhanced presentation. Hope this approach is included within the mix. Could improve prior videos, too.
The addition is awesome. Love the map app, and adding to the ABT videos is genius. Please do more
Great video, loved the animation!!
Great idea!
Great addition
Yes, the addition of the maps is excellent!
It certainly enhances the experience.
This is great. Animated map + a good narrative of the events is the best way to go.
Yes! I’ve been waiting for this.
Love the addition. All of the tours having this feature to contextualize the discussion would be fabulous.
What an ultimate partnership!
This is freaking amazing!
Thanks for the compliment - we'll be sure to pass it on to Garry.
@@gettysburg-fullyanimated Tom, I think a partnership between you and the American Battlefield Trust would be instrumental in the education of the general public on a lot of this stuff. It's one thing to hear it, but to be able to visualize it at the same time hammers the concept and points made by the guides.
