Chantilly, what a fight, one of the few known battles to be waged during a thunderstorm. That sure made things interesting for those who were there. If you like more content like this, make sure you subscribe to catch future uploads!
The loss of this battlefield due to urban development is what caused the sudden urgency in battlefield preservation! Thank you for your painstaking research and bringing this battle to life!
I can take you on a tour of places which were worked over for growth. I grew up in Mechanicsville. I need people to see what was there before the development. Developers dont see history only future
Most Civil War histories I have read gloss over this battle except to mention Phil Kearney's death. Glad to know the details of this battle. Sometimes the smaller battles have greater consequences then one would think. So I really appreciate your attention detail!
i can’t wait for the maryland campaign, south mountain battle map is gonna be amazing. there’s not much info on it but it’s a very important in civil war history.
I completely agree with you on that and don’t forget about the loss of Lee’s special orders which reveals to McClellan the positions of the entire confederate army and leads up to the battle of south mountain.
Two of my direct ancestors fought in Kearny's Red Patch division in the sister regiments 63rd and 105th Pennsylvania. Kearny has always been an interesting character to me since Elementary school. Keep it up!
You said it because I also can’t wait for the Maryland campaign and seeing the siege of harpers ferry, the battles of south mountain, Antietam and shepherdstown.
I stumbled upon the Ox Hill battlefield park one day while shopping. Small but lovely park. The county has a good amount of signage explaining the locations and actions that took place in Chantilly.
Fantastic! One request, in future videos could you show numbers of troops engaged with the casualty count? Love your attention to detail at the regimental level!
3:13 "Upon learning the disposition of Pope's troops on the morning of the 31st, General Lee deems it too risky to attack on such unfavorable terms. Instead, he opts to move his army between Centreville and Washington, a move which will force Pope to abandon his advantageous position." Another lesson that probably should have been applied before ordering Pickett's attack at Gettysburg, by maneuvering between Meade and Washington if possible.
These videos are so good, I consider it a duty to like and comment to get the algorithm working in your favor. Excellent work, and thank you for putting in the effort. It shows.
That was a great battle have to give it to the Confederates and Federals, both fought hard, well, and with courage. P.S. Stevens and Kearny were awesome leading their men forward.
I commented this on The Surety posted, but I grew up in Kearny New Jersey. He lived there and the town was named after him. He was a great General and could have possibly replaced McClellan. Who knows what would have happened if he was promoted
Phillip Kearny was one or the most courageous General in the AotP. Not only on the Battlefield but also by his character. After the Victory of Malvern Hill he protested against the further order from McClellan to retreat to the coast as treason and cowardice in which he had a fairly good point. It is therefore very unlikely that he would be promoted to Corps.Command as long as McClellan would have been in charge..His Death marks his virtues as a Commander like his vices because leading a single reginent in person on horseback into a charge was a risky endeavour
So was 66 or 29 the roads that were being moved down? Any local Virginians know? I’m gonna assume 29 cause that’s the road that goes right past bull run battlefield and then all the way to Fairfax.
Just wondering, would you be able to add a distance aid on your zoom? It would be nice to understand the scale of what is going on. I've n idea how to do that, and if it is too time-consuming, I won't complain if it's not done.
i portray the Scottish Highlanders, Chantilly and General Stevens hold a special yet sad place in our hearts. up until 2 years ago the organization i do reenactments with had the LA Special Battalion, otherwise known as the LA Tigers in it as well. yea....we had a love hate relationship.
Only watched a few episodes but am just stunned at how poorly the US officers communicate, how badly they coordinate, and how little they know of their surroundings. I’ve seen the maps for this battle, and they are pretty good.
the big mistake Pope committed was attacking in the first place when he couldve stayed back, wait for reinforcements, and greatly outnumber the confederates.
Are you going to continue on through Antietam, or are you going to catch up with things out west that have been happening at this point? A Union force was all but destroyed at Richmond KY the same day as Second Bull Run, and Lexington is now being occupied. Or will you continue on with the east and catch up with the west later?
Question, now that this channel will be working on the Maryland Campaign, will you guys be trying to work with the people at War of Rights and do a crossover event with the new campaign into Maryland? Cause I could see that happening and I think it would be pretty cool.
This whole thing seems pretty ill-conceived. I get that the retreat had to be covered, but if so why not create a defensive line somewhere advantageous and make them come after you (if they are going to). Like if Jackson had actually been attacking this would have gone even worse.
Why would i join as i grew up, til the age of 7 seven pines, then til i enlisted in the marines lived in cold harbor. Why would i pay as i see the battles in person, in my mind. I know u dont believe in ghosts but i do as ive seen them in cold harbor

Wow! Was it the battle of Corinth Ms that an earthquake occurred just before? Confederate troops took it as a bad omen
It's a crime that the Chantilly battlefield is almost gone.
Most Civil War histories I have read gloss over this battle except to mention Phil Kearney's death. Glad to know the details of this battle. Sometimes the smaller battles have greater consequences then one would think. So I really appreciate your attention detail!
Army of the Potomac would have been a different beast had General Stevens and Kearney survived
@@MikeD56034 That is one of things I enjoy about history, the little what ifs that can change everything.

As a Marylander, I’m curious to hearing their story. Feels great that my state is finally more relevant then Star Spang banner
You're a criminally under watched channel! The best quality battle coverage of any you tube channel. Keep it up man.
Wow, thanks archangel!
"Kearny watch out, oh no he has airpods in he can't hear us! Kearny watch out!"
hes probably listening to union dixie lol
Two of my direct ancestors fought in Kearny's Red Patch division in the sister regiments 63rd and 105th Pennsylvania. Kearny has always been an interesting character to me since Elementary school. Keep it up!
In addition to Kearny I would say about 200-300 additional men there that deserved a lot better than to die in the mud.
Yeah that quote kinda ticked me off lol
Well, this brings the Second Manassas campaign to a close. Can't wait for the Maryland campaign next. Kearny was a noble man.
You said it because I also can’t wait for the Maryland campaign and seeing the siege of harpers ferry, the battles of south mountain, Antietam and shepherdstown.
yep its gaming time

As a native northern Virginian I love learning more about its history
Keep it up!
thanks Zach!
Thank you for supporting VTH.
What's VTH?
Vlogging through history, a history reaction channel that has reacted to a few of ours.
Nice to have you back on the battlefield, very good lecture as always.
Thanks!

Man the American civil war has so many smallers battles and big ones too boot that aren't generally mentioned. Gettysburg's started out as a skirmish.
yep lol
As a person from Jersey Kearny will always be near & dear.
kearny my beloved

5:18 he can‘t fool me: that is obviously Peter Dinklage.
we all came to that conclusion. lol
Yo get tf up, new Warhawk just dropped

thanks Nick!
Warhawk does the best battle videos!
Enjoyed your video on this battle. Thank you so much for sharing ❤️💯
Glad you enjoyed
love your vids you truly tell the everday stragies everything been sub from the beginning
thanks Jeff!
With this battle… the Northern Virginia Campaign ends… now the Maryland Campaign can begin.
here it comes! here it comes!
Amazing video, sad about the urban growth on the chantilly battlefield
totally, the battlefield today honestly sucks
Same thing with the Wilderness and even parts of Manassas
Well done as usual, I really enjoy your work.
Thank you very much!
Ah, just in time for some frontier chicanery afterwards.
perhaps

When this is done well the heart pounds.
glad to hear!

yessir
Advancing your troops into a funnel ... good plan.

lol
Hard to imagine fighting hand to hand in a thunderstorm in the forest at night. Don’t think I could ever sleep again if I made it
lol
Another piecemeal effort by the Union. No wonder they failed so often. Attacking with smaller forces against superior defensive firing lines.
Stevens gave me some strong Tyrion Lannister vibes lol.
Also, Kearny comes off pretty foolish here.
Only watched a few episodes but am just stunned at how poorly the US officers communicate, how badly they coordinate, and how little they know of their surroundings. I’ve seen the maps for this battle, and they are pretty good.
congrats on getting a sponsor
Thanks Micahistory!
General Ingalls Stevens...its.......its Peter Dinklage! Wait wut?
Unfortunately there is just a small park representing the battlefield. All the rest is homes and shopping malls
I will admit looking at the animated map the Second Battle of Bull Run makes little sense tactical to figure out exactly the mistake was.
the big mistake Pope committed was attacking in the first place when he couldve stayed back, wait for reinforcements, and greatly outnumber the confederates.
Wow can’t wait for the antietam campaign
Oh shit here we go again.
aw shit

We will go back to the Western and Trans Mississippi Theaters after Antietam. We make our videos in blocks and try to keep the campaigns together.
End of the line for Union General Phil Kearny!!
I think the biggest mistake of this battle was dividing Steven's brigade against a Confederate division.
My Hometown is named after Isaac Stevens!!!
thats cool!
Too bad the battlefield has been overdeveloped. We need to start a movement to restore Chantilly!
that will be hard to do
super
GENERAL KEARNY!!!!! NO!!!!!!!!!!
oo whatca say

Usually when you are attacked, you will halt any movements to receive the attack.
I live in Chantilly and have walked this battlefield, it was a nasty pointless little battle.
Yeah we went there last year, it was cool to see but extremely underwhelming
@@WarhawkYT there is so much urban sprawl in the DMV that's encroaching on the battlefield. I walked it and saw everything inside an hour
Hi
Hi
Hi
Imagine losing both senior officers on a battlefield in a few hours lol, Yankee L
Yankee W those officers both sucked
