you are absolutely right, the spiral guides is much for applicable to only Vertical Jigging with overhead reels. Specially for Heavy vertical jigging set-ups.

What guide size would you use for saltwater rod? For what normally would take a 20,16,12,10,8 runners. Reduce down quickly?

Is there a certain direction one should turn the guides in relation to the reel handle?

For me...I use left handed reels and will orient the guides to the right...so when the rod is sitting on the deck...the reel handle and guides are all up. As for fishing and casting...basically No it doesnt matter.

Does it matter which way you start the spiral? I just bought a casting "kokanee" rod and the 1st guide is offset to the right when you look down the rod from the butt end. 7'6" 1 piece. 1st 3 guides are offset to the right incrementally and then the last 4 are aligned on the bottom.

Missed the part were you explain why the first guide that is the wrong way isn't the wrong way around :). I don't think it makes a massive difference on a rod that is not used for casting, but I see it more and more on rods that are made for casting, even on carp rods which causes lot's of problems like wrap ups and rods breaking and I just can't think of the benefit of placing rod guides the wrong way around.

It allow for the easiest lay of line back onto the reel. By putting the guide slightly opposite of you roll it allows for the line to be laid straight back onto the center of the reel rather than being partial to laying on the side the roll moves. Not necessary but definitely a nice tip
