    It is amazing to see that Ford actually took the time to put the GPS active charger utility in the car. The fact that is updates itself and guides you around problem charging stations instead of sending you there is actually priceless. Because your time is priceless. Well done, Ford. I hope for Ford brings out a small entry level four-seater EV with a decent range. But all things considered, this is a damn impressive first start for Ford.

    Dealer tech here: in Oct 2021 the CEO said that they were delaying the rollout of the OTA update for Blue Cruise for early adopters to Quarter 1 of 2022 so that they could work on simplifying the OTA process. On Jan 27 they sent out a notice to dealers saying the OTA update would start rolling out and there are two options for download. One is OTA, where the updates will occur in the background while the customer is driving, BUT some updates will require the vehicle to be shut off to download. It might take several WEEKS once OTA updates start before Blue Cruise is fully functional. The other option is complementary software download at the dealership, which is estimated to take between 2 to 8 HOURS with a dealer computer. Obviously this is a huge update. Either way, once Blue Cruise is activated and functioning, early adopters are getting 1 year of complementary Blue Cruise service.
    Here's the thing, the 2021 F150 is also part of the Blue Cruise program. All 2021 Raptors were built with the Blue Cruise hardware as part of the Raptor trim level. On Jan 27 they also announced that late in software development, they found that the off road suspension and capability of the Raptor didn't work with Blue Cruise to their standard. For unsold vehicles they're sending a updated window sticker that reflects a $750 reduction in price. For sold vehicles they're going to reach out to customers and give them a $750 refund. All other early adopter F150s aren't affected, so if the truck has the hardware, the OTA update will be sent out to the truck. The awkward part is the Raptors will still have the hardware (like the IR camera that watches your eyes) which will sit unused and Blue Cruise just won't be activated.
    Not sure if the OTA delay for early adopters was really because they were simplifying the OTA update process or tinkering with the Raptor and trying to make it work before deciding it wasn't going to happen, or both. I'm guessing both.

      "Raptor didn't work with Blue Cruise to their standard" sounds like lawyer speak for "there is a safety issue". Maybe it comes down to the Raptor's setup needing custom tuning and they don't want to maintain a separate branch for that vehicle. Could even be they found the hardware isn't configured properly for it.

    Long hoods provide more crush area to absorb energy in a front end collision. I prefer a long hood with frunk vs. a short hood.

    • @Sylvan_dB
      @Sylvan_dB 2 роки тому +2

      While true, it probably makes little difference. most of the frontal crush area is relatively small sections of the frame rails. In a traditional front engine vehicle most of that length is to provide enough distance to prevent the engine from going thru the dash (and folding it under the vehicle if possible). Without that large, solid chunk of metal up front the crush area increases dramatically even tho the distance seems much smaller.

    I endorse the tire swap 100%. My F350 has a recommended tire pressure of 75 PSI front, 80 PSI rear, which is simply too high for daily use. Even while towing 5 tons of trailer and tractor it's like driving on beach balls. I don't understand where Ford came up with those numbers, because 60 PSI is my preference and I have never had uneven wear or issues with heat build up or sidewall flex/roll.

    Ford has 100% let the early buyers down. Those that waited even 6 months to buy have more features, better features, and more frequent updates. Early buyers have been punished for being eager. Especially so for the ones that have the “can’t receive updates” problem. Ford knows what hardware needs replaced to fix the problem, and has for months. They refuse to fix the hardware and have Instead made those buyers wait for another attempt at a software update. It’s a real shame. It’s a great car, looks good, and drives well. Fords engineers can’t seem to deliver on the software/firmware side.

    • @Sylvan_dB
      @Sylvan_dB 2 роки тому +1

      I would bet that the engineers are simply not allowed to deliver. Ford is not prioritizing correctly in order to do software OTA updates. Management there is likely stuck in their traditional ways of "we already have their money, it is more important to work on new cars" and do not understand how the world has changed. Or perhaps the official Ford messaging is simply not true.

I had to get back to Model 3 RWD and, while I don't have as much space, it'll do. As for the "frunk" I generally use that to get my hot smelly takeout from restaurants. I never noticed that when I had the old ICE car, the "new car" smell is quickly getting away within a few weeks, and the cabin starts filling up with burned oil particulates, especially in winter, when the windows must stay closed. We are getting used to it and our noses ignore it, but the lungs will feel that for sure, and the brain too (for the missing oxygen in the air).

Attaching the Mustang name to it just tells me Ford did not have confidence in their electric vehicle technology so they attached the Mustang name to try and salvage it. When they said we were getting an electric Mustang, people thought we getting a 2 door sports car that would go up against the Tesla Model S. It being a crossover was a large disappointment and largely written off as such. It was only that highly modified Mach E that some builder created that generated the first positive news for it, but that one shared very little with the production Mach E. And only the GT that brought in the performance people were expecting.

      @@bl8danjil They’re selling all they can produce and are actually selling more of them than the “real” Mustang. I’m not a fan of them putting the Mustang name on it. But it’s selling. This vehicle is more likely to share an audience with the Model Y. That’s who everyone is comparing it to. As for performance, Fords regular Mustang GT is the one they look to for performance as well. So it was always expected that the Mach E GT would be the performance model. It’s Ford’s first serious effort at an EV. So I believe things will only improve from here.

Or if they only sold black cars, they could say black cars are selling out. There is just nothing to compare it to in their lineup, which is funny because the Escape and Bronco Sport ride on the same platform.
      I know who they were trying to compete with. It was obvious it was the model Y. That was not my point. They could have slapped the Escape name or Bronco Sport name on it and they would have sold just as many. @@bl8danjil If I’m not mistaken , there is an EV Mustang in the works. By the way, it’s NOT in ANY way related to the Escape/Bronco sport. 1. It’s primarily rear wheel drive with all wheel drive optional. The Escape is fwd, The Bronco Sport is all wheel drive but front wheel biased. 2. The Mach e front suspension is virtually the same as the Regular Mustang. I looked underneath. Its basically an extended Mustang chassis wise modified for an electric motor between the wheels. Much like a stretch limo. I didn’t realize it until I went the the Mustang Training class and the instructor showed us a few things. Again, totally different from the Escape/Bronco. As for the ridicule, part of the reason for the name sharing was indeed to create the “buzz” . People started talking that normally wouldn’t. Free publicity. Then people drove it and found even the base version was faster than most versions of the current Mustang. Yes, it’s a crossover. No, it’s not marketed at the same demographic as the regular Mustang. Ford has one thing in mind: sell it. A couple version would NOT have sold as many because people simply don’t buy that many coupes. Coupes are a niche market. So they wanted to make it closer to mainstream If the only complaint against this vehicle is the wrong name, that’s no big deal. Most simply call it the Mach E anyway. . In a few years it’ll probably be officially named the Mach e. And a real Coupe will likely be called the Mustang. That’s just my prediction.
      Again, the Escape Bronco sport have NOTHING in common with the Mach e platform. Whoever said that gave you some misinformation. The Bronco sport, escape and MAVERICK share the same platform.

    I completely disagree with the charging port being in the front being convenient. I think it is a huge pain in the ass for the charging port in the front because not everyone's garage extends into the home and it makes it weird when I have to unload stuff from my trunk. That means in my case I would have to unload the groceries first and then have to start the car and reverse and back into my garage in order to charge my car for the night. I would much rather have cables that extend to the back of the car so that when I park in my garage, I can just charge and not have to worry about the front. I would much rather have the charging port on the rear side to avoid this issue and I am sure most people would much rather prefer that method.

    Nice review.
    We received our 2023 Model Y LR in March and we love the driving experience and the regenerative breaking But here a few things we have experienced:
    - No sun screen on the roof. We live in Texas and all the other cars we have owned have one and its a must have for our hot summers
    - No instrument screen in front of the driver. I don't care for "you will get use to it", if you have to shift your head and eyes off the road it's not a good thing. Tesla puts them on the Model S and X. Its just a cost cutting measure.
    - Its nice that when you turn on your blinker an image pops up on the screen for the right or left side of the car. Only problem is, who looks right to make a left turn? They should also have a blind spot light on the exterior mirror like all other cars.
    - Since we ordered the white seats they also gave us the white door and dash trim. We get a lot of glare from it, I rather have the wood. And tan seats for that matter.
    - No Apple Car play, I knew it when we order it, but we use different apps on our iPhone's, pads, TVs and stereo equipment. So streaming it from our phone is a poor substitution. As an example is when I are streaming something from my iPhone and the Nav system announces turning directions, it does not pause the streaming media just speaks over it. Because you are streaming, you have to use your phone to make changes. Not even Tesla can match the resources of Apple or Google to update the software or the number of applications. Leave the infotainment to Apple and Google.
    - The phone as a key doesn't work ten or fifteen percent of the time. I ordered a key fob to see if it can work better.
    - On a recent 250 mile trip using the adaptive cruse control (Autopilot) I had the phantom breaking five or six times. I tried it with and without lane keeping. Real pain.
    I agree with the comment, just give me a door handle. All these gimmicks for door handle add cost and do give you any improved function.
    The next few years are really going to be interesting. New battery chemistry, shorter recharge times, and more competition to drive down prices and improve the creature comfort of the cars.

      The refresh 3 and y is going to be even more annoying since somehow they decide a screen on the back is more important than one in front on the dash and they are removing the stalks too.
      Still a great and efficient drivetrain with better tech integration but you do give up a lot of traditional creature comfort for those

    Great rundown of your experiences without the cultish devotion that would either have you tend to glorify the Mach-E or denigrate it in service to brand loyalty for another EV maker! I've been following reviews of the Mach-E since test driving a Premium 4EX last summer, and yours have been consistently the most informative.
    This video makes me feel better about not succumbing to the high degree of interest that I had after my test drive and watching countless videos on this and other EVs. I'm old enough to be patient, and my gut was telling me that it's a bad idea to buy the first generation of any new model (or significant overhaul of an existing model). That seems to have been very wise in retrospect because of the growing pains that early buyers are facing and how many changes have already come to the later models. In time, I'm sure the software updates will be normalized, but we live in a society where software is updated regularly and it's made us an impatient lot.
    I don't recall having an issue with the tires on my test drive, but with so much new and just a few hours of seat time, there's only so much to notice. I didn't take it canyon-carving or for an autocross event, so I didn't stress the grip of the tires like others have. While I didn't find the ride at all harsh, I have to admit to really wanting the Magneride suspension just for that extra level of adjustability in the suspension. I don't need all the other things that come with the GT Performance Edition, so the tremendous bump in price cannot be justified.
    In my mind, this vehicle is a great family version of a Mustang. The "not a Mustang" crowd needs to remember that not all Mustangs have been GTs and Shelby models. Not everyone wants that, and not everyone needs that for a vehicle they want to use every day. Perhaps the criticisms of those that want everything, want it cheap, and want it now will persuade Ford to keep paying attention and improve their operations. Tesla didn't come out of the gates with vehicles at the level of quality and performance that they exhibit today, so patience is key. It will be interesting to watch how Ford supports the vehicles that have already been sold, and how it handles the improvements that they should make to future models. It will also be interesting to see if/how the 300-pound gorilla reacts over time!

You can charge this vehicle to 90%-100% every time and not have to worry about depleting your battery's lifespan. Almost every other EV manufacturer suggests only charging to 100% if doing something like a road trip, and otherwise just charge to 80% for normal use and nightly charging

    In an EV with high nickel based chemistries you are not supposed to routinely charge above 80% and must leave at least 10% charge to ensure that the pack last longer. That’s 30% gone. So available range is not really 264 miles. It is 264 x 70% = 185 miles or 295 kilometres. Secondly this much range may not suitable for people living in the North with extreme cold temperatures. A battery pack can loose up to 40% of its range if parked in the open. If you add both of these two conditions together IMHO an EV is not yet ready for colder climates.

    • @dmandman9
      @dmandman9 2 роки тому

      That’s built into the software. When the cars shows 0%, there’s actually 10% battery left. Likewise, when the car shows 100%, there’s still about 10% capacity left. So the range is accurate. It will not ALLOW you to empty or overcharge the battery.

With many OEMs making a big deal of OTA updates in the marketing of their EVs, most if not all (except Tesla) still seem to far short with software updates that still require dealer visits or releasing very few or no updates at all.

      Most people who are not in the software business have no idea how complicated software is. It takes an army of software engineers to maintain and write new code everyday. Ford? No way, unless they move their headquarters to Silicon Valley and hire an army of software engineers there. Until then, forget about anything decent from Ford, or almost any other legacy automakers.

    the Michelin pss or p4s is a superior tire in every way, if you upgrade on your next one I highly recommend giving those a shot.

    Having been a ford person most of my car owning life the Mach-e was very tempting we bought last summer, but went more tried and true with a Y. Happy with the car, the tech is wonderful. The ride is too rough. Winter range...SUCKS. I often see 1% drop per mile of driving...in 15F type weather. So that's what, 60 miles if you keep it between 20% and 80%...not sure if this is the same for all EVs, and ours lives outside for now. Flip side is not spending $200/month on gas (aka fuel), so that's good.
    There are not chargers where you need chargers...that affects all EVs and should get better with time. An interstate trip is no worry, but take a day trip into the country/rural areas and even smaller towns and you find range anxiety is real.

      Pre-warm your vehicle if it’s on a charger before you leave, that will keep you from leaving with a cold battery and give significantly improved range.

      @@nicholasthon973 that's what I do. In 15f I get about 1 mile for every 1%

      @@chrisperry3525 the initial drop is usually quite high in cold weather as the car heats its battery and cabin (even if you preheat for 30 minutes) if you drive for an hour consumption will dropp and you will be able to get more than 60 miles out of 60%. Also on longer trips you should not be afraid to hit 10% before charging unless the weather is really bad. I have 7 years and 200 000miles behind me in a Model S in Norther Norway with winter temperatures down to -35C/-31F and have driven way longer than 60 miles even in my old P85+

    Alex - great job - BUT - one huge question: You mentioned that your range is approximately 265 miles. However - in this video, the center screen showed you were getting 2.7 mi/kwh. If that's so - your range would be approximately 240 miles.
    So - can you please explain?
    Thanks - and keep up the great work!

      Range is dependant on a wide variety of things, the trip computer shown was after mountain climbing so the consumption rate was higher.

      Alex…I appreciate your reply, but the video shows that you’ve traveled over 9,000 miles (trip B), with 2.7 mi/kWh. Right?

    Is there a safety factor to having the longer front end? Longer crumple zone seems like it would be better, but perhaps not.

    you were using the rear door wrong, you don't have to grab the door, you grab by the release button to open, there is a rubber grip inside that you use, after a year I am surprised you didn't realize that unfortunately
