In this video, I go over an 18 wheeler DOT Inspection which includes the semi air brake system inspection, semi truck exhaust leaks, and steering mechanism. If you have a CDL driving license or taking a CDL driving test, knowing about a DOT inspection can put you at an advantage.
The video covers the inspection procedures for checking the brake system, service brakes, parking brake system, brake drums or rotors, brake hose, brake tubing, low-pressure warning device, tractor protection valve, air compressor, electric brakes, hydraulic brakes, and if applicable the vacuum systems. Other items to check are coupling devices such as fifth wheels, pintle hooks, drawbar, and safety devices.
Semi exhaust leaks are considered a violation and should be corrected. Any exhaust system determined to be leaking at a point forward of or directly below the driver/sleeper compartment. Exhaust systems must be free from any parts of the motor vehicle shall be so located as would be likely to result in burning, charring, or any combustible part of the motor vehicle.
Semi fuel system inspection, visible leaks, fuel tank filler cap missing, fuel tank securely attached. Lighting devices, all lighting devices, and reflectors required. Safe loading, parts of vehicle, or condition of loading such that the spare tire or any part of the load or dunnage can fall onto the roadway. Protection against shifting cargo.
Steering Mechanism- steering wheel freer play, steering column, front axle beam, and all steering components other than steering column. Steering gearbox, pitman arm. power steering, ball and socket joints, tie rods and drag links, nuts, steering system. Suspension- Any U-bolts, spring hangers, or other axle position parts cracked, broken, loose, or missing resulting in shifting of an axle from its normal position, spring assembly, Torque, radius, or tracking components.
Frame inspection includes frame members, tire and wheel clearance, adjustable axle assemblies (sliding Subframes) Tires- tires on any steering axle of a power unit. All other tires. Wheels and rims- lock or side ring, wheels and rims, fasteners, welds. Windshield glazing, requirements, and exceptions as stated pertaining to any crack, discoloration, or vision reducing matter.
Windshield wipers- Any power unit that has an inoperative wiper, or missing or damaged parts that render it ineffective.

Thank You for the info, as a Woman Driver its Important I learn as much about the truck as I can to be the best Driver I can be.
A true professional never stops learning.
And he's cute too😁
Female diesel mechanic here, knowing the functions of the truck and having that vital information makes it so much easier to gain experience. Keep up the good work 🖤
7 hi 0:00
I'm currently working as a tractor/trailer apprentice mechanic and learning from outside sources and a mechanic at work. Including you. Thank you good sir. Hopefully I can get out of where I'm at and in the future go work for an honest company. I care about the drivers and others safety. Seems like people where I'm working at lack knowledge and management doesn't want to get parts sometimes.
Same bro, except the place I work at is extremely knowledgeable and the guys I work with don’t miss shit. We have the same problem with parts tho 😂

Glad you liked it. Be sure to subscribe
Doing my CDL training in MTL and you just describe our daily inspection :)
Looking forward rolling in the US !
Normal or routine check up, it's o.k.
But in sale or purchase one has to elaborate the 1. Tyres life
2. Fuel pump life, nozzle spray pattern, fuel consumption
3. Battery life
4. Electric cables tear wear
5. Frame structure, welding
6. Brakes life
7. Lights working
8. Etc
Wow this guy is fantastic! I hope he is a trainer or teacher somewhere too.
Thank you for watching.
Thank you! you're using the simplest language and talk on and about a complex system.
That's a know-so !!
Super helpful for even someone whose going to get a truck off the LOT
Glad to hear it!
Trying to buy a used truck, I appreciate your info, so I can look for all these faults before I purchase.
Glad we can help. 🧐🔧

@TATEXPRESSINC, once I get back stateside in a few months, I will be working with my BIL doing mobile service and repair. Im trying to learn as much as possible since I'm new to this world. Love the vids.
Adam, nice video. When I am doing a PM or a DOT inspection, on the 5th wheel bolts and on the bolts for the leaf spring hanger I use a small ball peen hammer and rap on each bolt will let you know if you have any loose or broken bolts . Just something I do.
Larry, thank you for your input and thank you for watching.
Have been driving 2 months. Thank you for the video.
Great video I wish my company used inspection software like that picture would save so much headache
You and me both!
Make sure any mechanic that does any work on your units is in fact registered...as a federal licenced mechanic.....make sure they sign And print off legible their name day date time and location...and while your at it...make sure they id themselves to be sure they are in fact per say.. mechanic...John.....not bob...you are the captain ..it's your ship....you are the one who is acceptable and responsabile
Thank you for watching and sharing. Be sure to hit the sub button
Awesom. Thank you very much for making these videos
Thank you for the support
This guy is way above average mechanic.
Great video.
The company I work for started doing them at 6 months on trucks and 3 months on trailers and we’ve noticed we are catching a lot more issues before they’re issued that way.
Thank you for sharing your information.
❤ß
Abs failure is indicated when a yellow external light goes on at the rear of the trl...clearly visible to dot personnel.
Great video. This will definitely help me with making sure drivers are compliant at my job. DOT was my only weakness but your video will help change that.
Glad it helped

I appreciate the support
Excellent content. I just started at a trucking company. This is very helpful. Thank you!
Glad to help. Be sure to subscribe to our channel. Thank you for watching.
I thought federal was different from state I've had to work on an army base and the federal dots take way less time then regular dots
That is correct. A federal dot takes less time than a roadside inspection.
Thank you I’m trying to get approved to move up a level at my job as a tech! Hopefully I’ll do good
good job sir
Thank you for watching, be sure to subscribe to our channel.

Happy to help!
@@TATEXPRESSINC got my master and L2 now, thanks again!
Nice work!
Perfectly made video. Thank you!!!
Yo you have great content, & this video was extremely informative. Can you talk abt different additives for these trucks like lucas fuel treatment, oil stabilizer, diesel booster, anti-gel ..etc.
& how often they should be used during different times...thank you !!
Skimp, thank you for watching. That would be a good video to do.
the best thnak you
I’ve only been a diesel mech for 2 years and I did a lot of dot inspections. I like your videos, very informative. I’m a notary now but maybe I’d like to have my own inspection business before I get too old.
You should have it set up as a side hustle consultant to drivers
Excellent video, they also check the fifth wheel bushings here
Doug, great point. Thank you for the input. 💪🏼🔧👊🏼
Great video Adam! I had a good experience at your shop when I came. Very good service, keep it up.👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
Thank you Oladotun for the comment. 🔧💪🏼👊🏼
At work needing a better training and, bam! Best video, good looks bro
Grate job i learn a lot from your videos. Thank You so much for sharing your knowledge !!!
Your Adu has problem, some time you're too far off from microphone ..
Also you need to show and explain more abou small parts and details.
Overall you're great.
Well done my trucker brother...if the air pressure does not hold 100 psi during the night it indicates a leak somewhere...have the shop trace it down...could be the compressor or regulator but as in this video it was a leaking air hose going to the driver steer axle wheel
Good info, keep it coming!👍
airbags. what about airbags?
Airbags will fail if there is an audible air leak.
Muy buenos videos y siempre se aprende algo de cada uno de ellos. Gracias
Good morning my love to the time the time
U need to show us how to do the inspection wall talking about it
I failed inspection 2 s : one for no paper log back up ..and no phone holder. That is so ridiculous 🙄 😒. Also yoy forgot 2 mention 3 emerg triangles and back up fuses.. in rest ,mechanicly inspection one of the best.
Great job man learning alot 👏
Great advice brotha!
Thank you... Excellent presentation.
No mention of lights or reflectors. I also use a hammer to check tightness of u bolts
Thank you for sharing.
Love your videos. Wanted to know, are you able or is there a way to convert a trucks brakes from drum to discs?! Have a 2012 Volvo 780 and was trying to find a kit or a way to go from drum to disc...if that’s even possible. Haven’t found anything on it so far. Thanks.
Many times the end of brake lines seize and does not spin freely making it difficult for a tech to tighten line and they leave kinked. It is better to replace hose if it can’t be tightened with locking piers holding the stationary part of the hose end while turning with a wrench. You can also remove hose put it in a vise carefully and use impact to spin hose end to break up rust till it spins freely . Then reinstall
Thank you very useful video!!
Glad to help
Good work!!
Thank you for watching, be sure to subscribe to our channel.
There is an air valve located by the fifth wheel that frequently goes bad and needs to be replaced.
I'm guessing the hose or regulator feeding too high of a pressure? Did the problem go away?
What is your rule of thumb for wheel seals? The DOT sheet basically just says to replace it if the brakes are greased
Oil soaked brakes need to be replaced. 🔧💪🏼👊🏼
Thanks for your video bro
Awesome information. Very useful.
Also u need like 3 thread on the lug nuts they can't be flush
Thank you for watching and sharing.
Just thought of a great opportunity for someone that knows how to perform a . DOT inspection. Truck stops asked if they would like for you to check out their truck
Thank you for sharing. Be sure to subscribe to our channel.
What all is the class A CDL driver expected to know about the engine and its parts if you have a DOT inspection? I want to tractor trailer School 36 years ago.
During a DOT inspection, a Class A CDL driver is expected to have a basic understanding of the engine and its parts to ensure the safety and roadworthiness of their commercial vehicle.
great video, thanks!
Thanks for watching
Thank you ! very important information
No Idea you guys where right in my backyard
Good informational video. Thanks alot.
Check lug nut tightness with a torque wrench.
Since thus us the semi inspection, when will you show us the full inspection?
Thank you for watching. This was the full FMCSA inspection for a tractor semi-truck.
Too bad motorhomes are not DOT inspected, half would be grounded ... great video
Good vid. Thanks for posting.
Appreciate you bruh

Great video!
I have question on the annual inspection for vechile type are semi considered truck or tractor? I'm a little confused about that
Thank you for watching. On an inspection, the semi is considered the tractor.
Good video 😎 bro
Very good i love it
Thanks
I'm stuck on his advice to do this type of inspection once a week. Ummm!! Aren't we required to do this daily? You have to score a pretrip on your logs daily, might as well do the inspection.😵💫
True but that wasnt a pre-trip inspection.
@@damonejohnson7776. The only real differences between the two are a plaque on the wall, a sticker, a certificate and the tools used by the inspectors. One is done daily the other is done yearly. They are in essence, the same thing. Most drivers just check the fluids, blow kisses at the tires, wink at the lights, and call it a pretrip inspection.

TRABAJANDO,!!👍
What do you mean rust bleeding? I’m guessing it’s where a nut is backing off, but what exactly are you looking for?
Raw iron when exposed to the elements will rust. Due to vibration and weather this rust will "bleed" from these exposed surfaces. So bleeding is an indication of a crack broken sheered part of the truck. Because of the weight and vibrations of these vehicles these weaknesses can be fatal if not found before failure.
4/32 on the front tires!
Correct! The legal minimum tread depth for front steer tires on a semi-truck in the United States is 4/32 of an inch
thank you for explaining brother
if my tires are worn out unevenly but they still legal at lowest point is that violation?
Hey do they check for dents, holes, or general damages to the box of box trucks? Or even trailers?
Structural damage will not pass inspection.
20:32 where not going to address the huge gauge in the tire? Showing real world examples of a failure is key. When I inspect I’m looking to fail. Not trying to pass you. But good video and helpful to a lot of people including me
Thank you for watching and sharing.
Wow very good video big boss
Question. If a truck in front of me had rocks flipping up and cracked my windshield is that okay or against dot compliance thanks
DOT would check for proper mudflaps and securing of load, including tarping.
good video👍
I appreciate it! 🔧💪🏼👊🏼
Good video body from Los Angeles California did you inspect tires
Tires were inspected. 🔧💪🏼👊🏼
Do you guys offer training course or hands on dot inspections for apprentices?
Thank you for watching.
Once you complete the inspection do you have to submit a copy to dot that it passed?
No, you must keep a copy and send a copy to your carrier's safety department.
Any chance I could get a copy of that template for my shop!?
3/32 is illegal to run in the front. Has to be 4/32+
I was thinking the same thing
Here in Texas it is also 4/32. Im learning as well.
@@damonejohnson7776 jpv//
It is 1/8

Can you help me in getting information on how to obtain my DOT inspector certificate?
It's always a good idea to check with your local Department of Transportation (DOT) or relevant regulatory agency for the most accurate and up-to-date information.
Hey man, first of all thank you for the video!!! But, where can I find a spare tire rack like that one? I can seem to find it anywhere online. TIA
We call that a pre-trip
About to buy a truck frightliner 2013 d13 with egr delete do you recommend it to buy it will pass dot inspection?
Tread front tire is 4/32 at least according to dot manual
Correct, the legal minimum tread depth for front steer tires on a semi-truck in the United States is 4/32 of an inch.
Any suggestions on why my yoke seal keeps leaking and I have replaced it three times at the shop
Gracias habla espanol desde Honduras.
