Rudy’s real story is inspirational. The movie was terrific. Same writers did Hoosiers - another great sports movie and the latter had only one actual accuracy - the final winning shot.
As has been said a million times, it's not a documentary. No "Hollywood" film is, whether it's about war, some other historical event, or about sports. The question that needs to be asked is whether or not emotional "truth" is conveyed that can inform and inspire people. The fact that there are "composite" characters, timelines and details changed are irrelevant. Rudy got himself on that field against all odds. That is a story worth telling.
@@BlakeN-o6l First of all, I seriously doubt that there are "thousands" of walk-ons that have better stories. And even if there were, it's irrelevant. The "securities fraud" charge is also a red herring, has nothing at all to do with the film. OK, you want to make it about "character", right? Yes, he made a mistake, but he was not convicted and did not go to prison. Getting back to the other "better walk-on" stories, apparently none of these "thousands" of walk-ons had the gumption or discipline to pitch their story to get it made into a film, did they? Finally, your diminishment of his getting on the field because it was "senior day" is also a bit of half-assed sophistry. He got on the field because he was on the sidelines as a Notre Dame player. Rudy isn't a saint, and probably isn't a "great" man in the traditional sense. But he was determined to achieve his "moment", and he did it. And the film was inspiring and is beloved by millions. Where's your movie, champ?
The 8% of falsehood makes a difference pertaining to the true story but it is needed for the "movie magic" to work for the larger audience to be inspired!
Just so you know, Knute Rockne didn't win 5 national championships in his career according to NCAA records. *He had 5 undefeated seasons at Notre Dame,* but was only awarded 4 national championships in his career. Like with other future powerhouses who will one day grow to rule the sport (Michigan, Alabama, and Nebraska, just to name a few), Notre Dame was still only just beginning to bloom in the early part of the 20th century, Notre Dame's first undefeated seasons largely went unrecognized by the rest of college football. Sportswriters were still suffering from Ivy League snobbery when it came to college football, refusing to validate any programs who had the sheer audacity to serve as the symbolic pride of Irish Catholics, Midwestern farmers, and of course those damned, traitorous Southerners who were previously Confederates trying to split the nation apart
Interesting, now that I know what I know. This is very interesting. I went to my first game in 1992, they were handing out flyers that said they would be filming for a movie called Rudy. We were all thinking… Who is Rudy? Did not pay any attention to it or think about it. Now we know. I have been fortunate enough to meet the real Rudy a couple times. Once on the field during the Bush push game, or immediately after I should say. And another time when he was walking around campus and I hung around with him for about a half hour. It was funny to walk up on a tailgate and no one would know who he was. Then when they found out it was hilarious. Enjoyed the video very much, thank you.
I remember a TV halftime feature on Rudy Ruettiger during the 1975 season; I believe it was on a Notre Dame syndication network's game broadcast. It was not dramatic, just straight up. They played up his small size and longtime desire to play for the Irish. So that memory tends to debunk the idea that he was unheard of, or just an obscure walk-on practice player. Still, the movie pumped massive drama into a pretty matter-of-fact situation. Two fallacies in the movie: He did not make a solo tackle; he was in on the tackle. But broadcaster Don Criqui didn't mention his name on the play. Also, the character Fortune (Charles Dutton) was an example of the troubling "Magical Minority" trope that movie industry at that time indulged in as its latest example of unconscious racism. A black person appears repeatedly as an inspirational, almost imaginary sprite-like figure, to charismatically help the white person overcome their obstacles, but has no developed life of their own.
Still all embellishments aside...a great story of the human spirit over coming the negativities and adversities in growing into ones destiny...a great inspiration to many... including Kobe
i never did believe that the players all put their jerseys on dan devines desk because as he said if that happened they never would've seen them again and i believe that devine was a no nonesense coach.
I didn't think every thing about it was factual. "Based on a true story" is enough for me. I enjoyed it, and the ending gets to me every time I watch it. Using a little cinematic license is not "lying". But the thing that kind of bothered me was the time period portrayed looked nothing like 1975. I was an undergrad that year, not at ND, but another big Midwest school. Us guys all wore our hair long. Bell-bottoms were prevalent. The movie looked more like 1965. Look at a photo of the ND team in '75. They look nothing like the team in the movie. Only ROTC guys then wore their hair like Sean in the movie. That lack of attention to detail disappointed me but didn't kill the enjoyment of watching it.
@@michaelquentin3782 Karen? Doesn't that mean unhinged behavior? I said I really enjoyed the movie. I'm just one of those that notices incongruent things. I loved "Major League" (from Cleveland) but noticed that Charlie Sheen, a relief pitcher, never pitched out of the stretch.
Wow Rudy is done!! I grew up like soooo many believing that this stuff was real......if I had the vhs video I would throw it away!!! Soooo disappointed...but I'm very happy the truth was brought out...no chan't!! I cried during that scene..Rudy sucks
@@thesportsvault-espnenemy1217 That's fine, make that vid. I mean, one has to figure there are "artistic liberties" taken with "based on a true story" films. I remember Joe Montana debunking the things depicted in RUDY, and he was doing so almost gleefully. I love Joe, but I was like, "Really, Joe?,,,You HAD TO do that?"
Ya know, not fer nothin, but as a used car salesman from Chicago(and avid sports fan) what it really boils down to is whether you think an embellishment is truth or not. If you think it is like I do, then yeah the movie is 92% accurate, if you don’t then the only thing that’s accurate is a few of the names… 🥹

Harris drank Jobu's rum, that why he was seen as the villain in Rudy.

Thank you for your insight!
The comment about Fortune is one of the more astute about the movie. “Legend of Bagger Vance” does the same thing.

So the film itself has no reason to exist. Got it.
